Fanfic fanart fanfic fanart!! When I read the "hostage" line, it invoked such a clear image in my head of Siffrin tensed up like a startled prey animal that it got added to my list of things to maybe draw immediately.

Dooon't think about the words 'left' and 'right' in that quote too hard. I know how to read I prommy. :) (I did Not process those words and lost the coin flip in the composition phase...)

Time taken on this was [head in hands] 48 hours and 37 minutes.... That bloated number has two culprits:

1) I got a new tablet! My old one was 10 years old. Its plastic was melting and the electronics had ghosts in 'em, so it needed the sweet release of retirement. However, I had just gotten to the line art phase when the switch happened. Clumsily getting used to the new one during the most precise phase of the process did devastating things to my perfectionism.

2) I made a GRAVE mistake with how I chose to color this. I wanted to keep the grayscale layers for accuracy instead of just slapping a B&W filter over the colored version, so all the colors come from gradient maps, color balance layers, overlay layers, and raster layers clipped to other layers. Listen. I'm used to working with lots of layers. I like keeping things separate so I can edit them more easily. But this is the worst layer system I have ever created. Going from color to B&W requires toggling exactly 20 layers & folders on or off. There are 87 visible layers total. This file lags when you edit it. I've never wanted CSP v1.13 to have layer comps more in my life.

Not helping matters was Isabeau. I said he was the easiest to draw in my last post, but he took that as a challenge, apparently. It's a simple fist-on-hip pose, why was that so hard!?! His face gave me grief too.

Odile's lil' wave got added at the end of the line art phase. I've never added to a sketch that late in the game before, but I felt bad about how little screen area she got, haha. Girl, I tried, but this composition was not kind to you.

Giving Isa, Odile, and Siffrin skin colors felt cursed. Well... "color" is maybe a stretch for Sif. The pallor from being affection-jumpscared isn't helping. In the dev's nose reveal post, they said that Siffrin isn't white but is white-passing, so BOOM albinism headcanon. Like c'mon, they wear a big hat and have most of their skin covered because the sun is a deadly laser when you have little to no melanin and idk if sunblock exists in-universe. Heck, maybe most Islanders have it, their whole religion is about the night sky so maybe they're nocturnal. This makes perfect sense. :)

Ok friends, at long last I'm finally--finally--getting this post together. Apologies in advance for this one being a bit of a ramble, this poor doll has a lot of backstory, and I'm going to try to keep this as brief as possible but you know how it is when ADHD brain tries to relay a linear narrative XD And when you add brain fog to that...it's a bit of a mess. Anyway. I'm trying. Feel free to skip the text and just look at my crochet pix ;p

(Overly detailed explanation of why I made things plus lots of photos)

So. Over the past several weeks I've done a LOT of work to get my girl Iona (Pullip Nomado) back to a semblance of her former glory. Io is pretty well established as my favorite doll. She was my very first Pullip--I've had her over twenty years now--and for a long time she was basically my mascot in the doll community. People used to send me gifts specifically for her (including but not limited to the necklace she's wearing and the hair currently on her head). But the years have not been especially kind to either of us, and when I brought her out of storage it was clear she's beginning to feel her age. I was dismayed to find her suffering from an advanced case of the neck melt that plagues type 2 Pullips, which required a good bit of repair and modification to ensure she got to keep her original body (for a minute there it looked like she might have to become a Rainbow High hybrid).

Once I managed to salvage that situation, I decided Io was long overdue for a full refresh to return her to a semblance of her former glory. I gave her a brand new scalp plate with her signature hair twists still intact (thanks to a generous friend who sent me extras several years ago); replaced the hooks on her earings with new wires that put less stress on her piercings; dug her original boots out of storage; and most importantly (THE ACTUAL POINT OF THIS POST) I set to work crocheting several new pieces for her wardrobe! So far this includes a maxi skirt, hair scarf, and shawl. These are all garments I wear in my day-to-day life, so if you notice them recurring in my handmade doll clothing, that's why ;p As I get older I find myself more inclined to dress my dolls in pieces more in line with my own personal aesthetic, rather than aspirational styles that I admire, but would never wear.

I am so happy with how these have turned out, the skirt especially. I made it using KnitPicks Curio #10 crochet thread in Comfrey, a shade which beautifully compliments several of the blouses I've collected for Io over the years. The shawl was made with Lion Brand BonBons yarn, and the hair scarf is Lizbeth #10 crochet cotton from Handy Hands (I don't remember which colorway at the moment).

The patterns for the skirt and shawl were adapted from ones for full size garments I've made for myself in the past; I can talk more about the specifics of that and what modifications I made in another post if anyone is interested. The hair scarf is just a granny stitch triangle with a very lazy border and some ties added.

(**Sigh** pining for the days when Mattel still had quality standards...)

And at long last we've reached the end! Apologies again for the length of this one, if you can believe it I *did* edit out a significant amount, but it still ended up novella-length XD I hope you enjoy Io's new looks, as I've had a great deal of fun working on these pieces, and plan to continue making more for her and other dolls in the near future. I also have several Rainbow High dolls with complete or near-complete crochet outfits I want to share, so be on the lookout for that post sometime soon as well.

CisLunar Dev Blog #2: BonBon

I had an official title for these updates, and as usual I plumb forgot LOL (Edit 4/9/2024: I added the correct title now lol)

Either way I wanted to post more on here (which will in turn make me work more so there is more to post).

I took a lovely weekend a couple months ago to finally begin redoing some of the designs for CisLunar. Including Cis and Lunar, there are 5 characters in all. As more parts of the story are released, there will be more characters added!

But let us focus on the boy of the hour shall we? Today we're going to meet Bonny "BonBon" Bond, Lunar's bestie and fellow radio host/informant/partner in (literal) crime.

Let's start off with his initial design!

I wanted BonBon to be different than Lunar in a lot of ways. First off he's a dog boy (he's got a little bunny in him too). I've always found Lunar looks very....awake, if that makes sense, so I wanted to give BonBon a very sleepy vibe. I wanted him to be a goth that wore mostly neutrals. And yes, he can do that cartoon dog thing when he's listening to something far away.

When I redesigned Lunar, I knew I would have to update BonBon in some fashion (not to toot my own horn, but he's a pretty solid design already). My first step was to doodle him as they were and see what I wanted to get fixed.

When I drew him at this point, I already made the decision to make his hair visibly more curly and changed the fringe. After this little doodle, I decided to make him full time wears all black goth. After getting some inspo from pinterest, I got what I think is a much better design! He still looks adorably sleepy.

In the new design I also decided to make his ears more visibly ear-like. The chain clock is now a nice little dog collar that goes nice with all of his piercings. LOL he also went from not showing a lot of skin to showing a lot more skin. I'm happy to go with the all black outfit as it counters nicely with how bright Lunar's outfit is. While I wanted to add more detail, I wanted to make it simple enough that I can draw more than once lol. Another thing I wanted to establish was the sense of style of the world through the characters' outfits. I wanted the fashion sense to always push the envelope and be more "otherworldly" but also trace back to vintage trends.

Lunar: You look great! BonBon: Thanks dude. Lunar: I can't believe you commit to a fishnet jumpsuit. BonBon: Girl, I also can't believe I commit to it.

Yay! One redesign down, two more to go! The next character is Lunar's mafia bf, Champagne Nebula. Below is the first try at the redesign. I'm planning on redoing it!

gonna try to summarize points but i missed the first part & definitely don't remember a lot oops

how do people feel about leap high? general consensus- it's a grower

yumeki was disliked but he now has a cult following who think he's camp

more korean influence this season- next round will be in korea & they were in korea lomger this time. s1 & s2 had the same Japanese pds but this szn has new korean pds

jp fanbase is pretty typical - girls around the ages of the contestants & slightly older men

lots of people want ayane in toxic because she sounds like rosé

seems like momona, miu, ran, rino, tsuzumi, etc will be voted into &me. expecting this to cause some storyline drama. stacked group curse?

differences in storyline building across cultures: a lot of repetitive storytelling this season with trainees crying because they feel they can't share their true feelings with their teams and ultimately saying nothing. this could help explain why japanese trainees tend to disappear when they compete in korean shows

more differences: less evil editing. rumors that editors cut conversations about the hate that nakamori mikoto is getting right now. also more drama from the mentors compared to the trainees

what concepts/sounds/songs do we want to see for the final group? depends on the members, but &me is the most population 3rd round preview. (someone said e-girls, big agree from me)

we all miss the mentor sugai hidenori from s1 & s2 lol

there are way more experienced trainees on s3 compared to s1 & s2. some people are happy about this because it means they can do more interesting & challenging performances. host brought up that this is probably because korean companies having japanese trainees was wayyy more rare in/before 2019 compared to now.

don't like how they did the rap songs this time, with already completed songs. in s1 they just gave them a beat and they got to do more performance creation (this season afaik they wrote lyrics but they had to git the rapping in bijin & shut down) (personally havent seem the ep yet so idk tho)

suggestions for future round 1 songs: chao chao by happiness, vocaloid songs, recent akb because they have more kpop style choreo, songs by superfly

thoughts on song selection? it's kinda smart because theyre appealing to distinct groups- younger kpop fans & older jpop fans. cool that all of the popular trainees ended up in jpop songs (seifuku no mannequin and body & soul)

same note: ppl tried to give spoilers for r2 but no one knew run run, since it's really new, in korean and english, & swf isnt very popular in japan. when ppl tried to spoil namie amuro's songs they got them mixed up with other singers (ie, no super old jpop fans in the audience). when speed was called like 3 thirty+ year old women looked excited and no one else knew it

trainees discussed: momona's hair, momoka's husky voice (sukai rise potential?), kokona (below)

kokona had a very hyewon character but in this ep people realized that she can actually sing (someone then compared her to minju). since she's already #6 based largely on visuals, we might see a rank rise for her

do we have too many vocalists in the top? with jo1 (s1) & bonbon girls (chuang 2020) this messes with their line distribution & ability to maximize their skills. host feels that bonbon only shone through ballads since they couldnt dance & had 4/7 main vocals (i half agree - they had 3 members who couldn't hold a note), i feel that jo1's members do great in subunits (especially sho, ren, sukai, & takumi, as evidenced by their performance on the first take). pretty solid comparison although lapone habdles jo1 better than tencent handled bonbon imo. cant fully compare because bonbon only had 2 years full of indiv activity & preplanned music while jo1 is permanent & has had the opportunity to grow

lots of fascinating hair changes for r3. lots of bad extensions

jp fans are very peaceful, but things get downright nasty during the finals. last time there were d34th threats

the final is dec 16, we're happy because this means they purposely avoided jo1's formation date & that'll reduce any fanclash (although jams are very peaceful)
