After talking to @eddis-not-eeddis about Korean music, I thought I'd put together a list of Korean music that carried me through the last years of high school/first year uni :)

I listened to mostly kpop (and some r&b/indie/rap/alternative/pop rock) near the end of high school, but it became too tiring to listen to, and I became more interested in other genres of Korean music. I've linked a few of my favourite albums below, but most of those artistts have grown in name and (relative) fame since I began listening to them. Here are a a few more recommendations (some of which are smaller/lesser known artists, some of which have big presences in the industry):

Acoustic indie: OKDAL, Han All, Kim Na Young, Standing Egg, Lucid Fall, Sugarbowl, J Rabbit, Urban Zakapa

R&B: Zion.T, Zico, HYUKOH, Heize, GSoul, Ra.D, Crush, DEAN

Ballads: Ji Jin Seok, Park Hyo-shin, Jeong Sewoon, Kim Jin-ah, ONEW, Jung Seung Hwan, Paul Kim

Bands: Martin Smith, LUCY (they have a VIOLINIST !!!), The Rose

Indiepop/pop artists who branched out to different genres: Minseo, Chen, AILEE, BOL4, Sandeul, ONEW, Jonghyun, Monogram, Roy Kim, Lee Hi

Sam Kim's Sun and Moon was THE album of the year in grade 12. Every single track on this album is memorable. Sam Kim (from Seattle!) is signed under Antenna Music, whose other artists are worth checking out, too, if you're interested in unconventional, unique indie music (Antenna's whole brand is letting the artists explore their own tastes and interests; it's a whole agency of singer-songwriters). Sam Kim himself is an excellent guitarist, and likes to dabble every once in a while in other genres (r&b, ballads, pop) and has performed singles for k-drama soundtracks in the past. First song rec: It's You for a relaxed indiepop sound, NO SENSE from his album I AM SAM for a demonstration of his guitar picking style.

Lee Jin-ah is also at Antenna Music. When she arrived on the music scene with her voice and her piano, even big names like JYP (which is one of the "Big Three" pop music companies) were scrambling to offer her a contract. Her jazz piano background brings something very distinctive to the Korean music industry; she combines that with r&b and bubblegum pop influences, which is a really interesting contrast with her light, airy, fairy-like voice :) First song rec: RANDOM (a good intro to her eclectic style), Let's Go Camping (a slower acoustic/piano track that displays her whimsical sound in a softer way).

Eddy Kim's acoustic stuff is pretty good easy listening. I listened to his music constantly in high school. He's less experimental in his music style than Sam Kim, for example, but when he sticks to his brand (guy with guitar and a regular percussive beat) he comes up with some really good music. First song rec: 2 years apart or The Manual

AKMU (Akdong Musician) is probably the only big name company musician I still follow/listen to. They signed with JYP when they were in their mid-teens -- JYP is the only one among the Big Three companies that branches out from mainstream pop the most. AKMU is a brother-sister duo that creates quirky, whimsical indie-pop music with a very distinctive sound (they often sing together; the sister is an incredible vocalist and the brother is the one who composes and produces). More recent music has either gone electro-pop or acoustic based indie. I've added two albums here (one from their teenage years, one more recent) as a nice comparison. You can hear how their style has changed over the years! First song rec: How People Move (a funky, energetic title track), Time and Fallen Leaves (ballad), Last Goodbye (they incorporated a familiar classical music song into this in a very creative way)

Last of all, someone who technically is part of the pop scene in Korea, but whose sound is more memorable to me. IU's charm is the versatility in her voice; she's experimented with many genres in her extensive career (she was a child star). Musical theatre, jazz, singsong rap, ballads, bubblegum pop, electropop, indiepop, acoustic indie, alternative....... she's literally done it all (well. Aside from rock, metal, and traditional folk music). LILAC is one of her more recent albums (for a more acoustic indie sound, I'd recommend Palette). First song rec: LILAC (this is a pretty good example of the unique things she brings to the kpop scene: a theatrical, refreshing sound), My sea (a kdrama OST-style ballad that demonstrates her vocal ability and range), Through the Night from her Palette album (soft relaxing acoustic song)

Sykee's Thoughts - To My Youth by BOL4

An activity I enjoy as a form of emotional catharsis is listening to a single song over and over, writing down its lyrics and then reinterpreting it into an experience. This is the first one I'm posting on here. It's by a K-Pop group called BOL4 and it's called "To My Youth."

Youth - the spring of one's life. It's a phrase the elders throw around so casually when they have forgotten about all the struggles of being young. But I have never related more to the phrase "at a distance, spring is green" than anything else. So here's one to my youth which was never green.

It was a period of gloom, darkness and loneliness. A time I wished I would just not be alive; I wished I could disappear so that I did not have to live through all that pain. As I silently cried myself to sleep every night, I drifted more and more away from those around me - their eyes frightened me, made me think I would accidently crack and my facade would give way to the broken pieces.

So, during those "beautiful" days, I was in pain, in misery, in despair - just calling out to someone, anyone to pull me out. But I would not crack; I would not show because I was afraid of receiving love. It was something I hadn't possessed yet so what if I experienced it only to lose it? Life was a paradox. I despised myself for not being able to be loved yet I cried my heart out for love. My parents would never see me; they only ever looked at me and slowly, I was drifiting away, unknown to the common man's eyes.

Well, it seemed that time was medicine. Slowly, I started getting better and I started feeling more on the positive side of the spectrum - less tears, more smiles. Nevertheless, melancholy is a monster that buries its fangs deep within you. The fear that it would creep back into me, made me turn my back to goodness - it pulled me back into the darkness within which I continued to struggle.

All of those "beautiful" memories are filled with nothing but morose and pain. I hurt as much as my heart could hurt and yet, it seemed to never be enough. The monster kept crawling deeper into me until it found my weakest point. It battered away at my most denfenseless spot to its heart's content. Never caring for the way its motions afflicted the carrier, the monster would eat out of me all day, everyday, until only a mushy glob of what I was, was all that was left. Still, all my friends, the people around me would only look at me - no one ever saw me and I kept drifting even farther away - the tether getting disconnected.

BUT, I see a possibility - a latern in the dark. Maybe, just maybe, I go through all this pain and suffering and one day, some day, to any one person out there, I might just become a small light. Maybe, in proportion to all this pain, i might become a bright star. Maybe in proportion to all this pain, I become a black hole. But what if? What if I become the tiny spark in someone's darkened tunnel? WHAT IF I become the slayer of the monsters? I catch hold of the tether and desperately try to pull myself back. I have discovered chance; I have discovered hope.

To my self that never went to sleep with a dry pillow: Maybe, if I hold on tight to this lifeline, I might finally reach safety. Maybe, at the end of the line, I might even find myself - smiling, proud of me for not giving up.

To teen me, to my youth: Oh, how painful it must have been. Oh, how much you wished and desired. Oh, how lonely you were.

From older me, from my 20s: You made it out. You have tamed the monster - depression has freed you from its claws. Now, you are a monster slayer - you provide a listening ear for those at their darkest - the youth.

This is 식혜(Sikhye)!!

Sikhye is a traditional beverage made of rice. It's made by pouring malt & water on (cooked) white rice! You pour just enough that you can see the rice grains above the water. Then you leave it so the carbs can turn into maltose. When the rice grains start to float up, pour it into a pot and boil. Add some honey/sugar/ginger/etc. according to preference, then you leave it to cool!

Sikhye helps with digestion, and contains fibers, antioxidants, etc. It also helps with hangovers, according to research. Which is nice I think.

Sikhye is apparently pretty easy to find, places that sell Korean food(like H-Mart) should almost certainly have some.

IZ*ONE - Violeta

IZ*ONE seems to have this ability to produce the most elegant songs in Kpop. Violeta has a similar formula to their debut track La Vie En Rose, but features a much heavier beat drop, and a softer rap verse. Danceable and charming. 5/5

BOL4 - BOM and Stars Over Me

Jiyoung has a particular voice that is unrefined while still conveying a particular feeling. Bom is a light and airy Spring song, reminding me of K.will's Love Blossom from 2013. Stars Over Me is surprisingly western influenced, with similarities to Taylor Swift or Shawn Mendes. Both evoke similar feelings of Springtime and contentedness. 5/5 and 5/5

Blackpink - Kill This Love

Kill This Love is similar in formula to Ddu-du Ddu-du, with a simpler beat drop, more English, and less melding in the bridge. Might be a good track for new listeners, but older fans may find it boring when compared to the rest of their discography. 5/5

RYUJIN’S DREAM DATE

currently listening to: stars over me by bol4

ryujin had been going on and on about how excited she was for this date all week. you had gotten a text from her on monday evening telling you that she had had the best idea and that you had to cancel any plans you might have for saturday. 

fortunately your day was already free, but that hadn’t stopped ryujin from reminding you to not let anything potentially spoil the day. she was looking over your shoulder whenever she spotted you working on something, asking how long it would take to reassure herself you most definitely would not allow it to creep over into your weekend.

you also made regular attempts to get more details out of her, but she completely froze up the second you started asking questions, giving away nothing more than the time of the train you were getting and the platform you had to meet her on. and that it was gonna be the best date of your life of course.

she hadn’t been able to come see you on friday evening like she usually would, presumably because she had had to shift around all the work she had, but her constant stream of texts reminding you when and where to meet her almost made you forget that she wasn’t in the room with you.

you arrived at the station almost half an hour early, not wanting there to be even the slightest chance that you would miss the train. it was maybe a little earlier than you had been going for, but you knew it wouldn’t be wasted when you saw ryujin, already there, checking her phone for the tickets she had sent you the confirmation for a week earlier.

she was so engrossed in the screen that you managed to walk up behind her without her realising at all. the second she saw you, though, her excited energy bubbled over, the fact that you had made the extra effort to get there on time not going unnoticed. she wrapped her arms around your neck and squealed into your shoulder, swaying your bodies side to side. 

you passed the time in a coffee shop, choosing the one nearest your gate so that you could be sure you weren’t going to miss the train. you were slightly surprised to see her so nervous, but you knew it was just because of how perfect she knew the day could be, and the guilt she’d feel if she felt like the one who caused it to go awry. 

you reached for her hand as you walked alongside the train, looking for your carriage, squeezing it as her gaze flicked frantically between the train and her phone. she smiled back at you, brow unfurrowing for a second before she went back to consulting the tickets. 

she seemed to loosen up the second you reached your seats, shepherding you down the carriage and insisting you took the window seat. you hadn’t realised the journey would be so long, and became increasingly intrigued as you checked the list of stations the train would be stopping at, trying to figure out which you might be getting off at and why. 

you spent the train journey chatting, resting your head on her shoulder as she excitedly gesticulated, more animated than you had ever seen her. you kept trying to get her to slip up and tell you where it was you were going, but she was absolutely set on keeping it a surprise until the very last second.

the mystery venue was apparently only a few minutes walk from the station, so you allowed her to guide you through the unfamiliar streets, almost tripping as she pulled you along behind her. 

you hadn’t thought it would be possible for her to get more excited, but you felt like you could feel the joy radiating off her more and more with every block. when you eventually reached the final corner she stopped, looking at you with a child’s delight in her eyes and kissing you on the cheek before telling you how excited she was to be here. 

you turned the corner, and were somewhat underwhelmed to see a large, grey, warehouse-like building standing alone in a car park. this was clearly what ryujin had been expecting though, as she released your hand and began sprinting to the front door, calling you after her. 

it was only once you were in the door and the retro music started filtering through from the main hall that you realised what you were doing, and you had to cover your mouth to prevent stunned laughter from tumbling out, wondering how long it had taken her to find a roller disco in seoul (or rather, about an hour outside of seoul).

she showed her booking to the woman behind the counter, who seemed wholly endeared by ryujin’s enthusiasm, much as you were as you slung your arm around her shoulder and wandered over to find some skates. 

she grinned at your gleefully, teasing about how you had been so desperate to know where you were going, and trying to get you to praise her for keeping it a surprise so well.

you weren’t that surprised though. there was something so her about the whole idea. the dancing stupidly to songs that were released years before you were born, colourful lights flashing above your head as you desperately tried to stay on your feet. it was perfect for her.

you wondered whether this was something ryujin might have been practising, though whether she had or not her dance skill would surely mean she’d be pretty good at this right?

or possibly not right. 

she had only taken about three steps, not yet on the actual dance floor, when she tumbled for the first time. she blushed as you reached one hand down to help her, while your other was grasping the railing as tightly as you could muster. 

you hauled her off the floor, suggesting she might also hold the railing, just to start with. she sheepishly reached out in front of you, teetering slightly as she edged her way towards the rink itself. 

she pushed away from the side one she was on the floor though, flailing her arms to keep her on her feet as she once again found herself totally without balance. the bizarre squat she had assumed to steady herself made you laugh out loud, and you pulled out your phone to take a photo of her, making sure you got her sour expression in the low light. 

her brazen attitude stuck though, and after almost following for the entire length of the first song, she suddenly seemed to tap into some innate roller skating ability, gliding along as you still toddled along the side.

her newfound expertise led her to try and coax you off the railing, holding both hands out in front of you so you still had something to hold on to. you stood facing each other for a moment, before ryujin realised she had no clue how to navigate backwards and let go of your right hand, turning round to guide you from your side. 

your cautious attitude left you much less bruised than you imagined ryujin would be, but you also warmed up to the movements pretty quickly, spending the majority of your time slot carelessly waltzing around the floor. 

‘not bad huh?’ she asked once you left, walking slowly towards the station as you scanned the shop fronts for somewhere you could eat. 

‘definitely not bad, some might even say good in fact.’

‘only good?’

‘perfect,’ you acknowledged, kissing her nose as she held one of the restaurant’s doors open, ‘maybe even the best ever.’

‘the best so far,’ she corrected, ‘there’s a lot more where that came from.’
