one more veilguard post and then i have to do other things (including setting up my queue bc all my blogs are now mostly my own text posts i think lol)

i don't think it is at all a coincidence that the darkest and most emotionally complicated parts of the narrative in veilguard are in codex entries, banter dialogue, and parts of the game that are entirely just characters talking to each other. those things are all functionally separate from gameplay mechanics and the need to acknowledge branching paths. and i do think that if you're in the market for trying to guess what the few devs/writers you actually know the names of and care about might think of their own story, their perspectives are going to be stronger in those specific places. it's not perfect by any means, but there is more artistic flexibility in those text/dialogue-only sections of the game -- and those things tend to paint a darker and more complicated world than can feel present in the main storyline and stuff

solas gets a good turn in this game, development-wise, partly because... veilguard is about solas at its core, but he's also a character who is on his own track and who is only truly affected by you the player at the very very end when you have to make a major choice for him and everyone else around him. but otherwise, he's either just talking, or the subject of text-only codex entries, or you're seeing his regrets in static murals through his own recollection

and it frustrates me to no end to see this framed as creative cowardice, or like the ~devs don't understand their own story~, as if all of this Certifiably Good Shit happened by accident, and you, dear player, had to unearth it like some kind of archeological artifact that the dumb, mean, bigoted developers hid from you on purpose and didn't want you to find and empathize with, and not like... just... man, making big budget games with massive corporate oversight is often a process of giving the story lots of edges and kind of praying they aren't ALL sanded off by someone who doesn't understand or care about narratives beyond how much money they can make
