March 2023 "That Girl" Challenge
Helloooo :)
This is the 31-Day Challenge that I've created for us to do together this month. It's just something simple and fun. Enjoy! - BlissfullyEcho
——————————————-
DAY 1: Deep clean your living space (bedroom, apartment, house, condo, camper, etc)
DAY 2: Deep clean your car (if you don't have a car, deep clean something else that you haven't done but should do: junk drawer, dresser, yoga mat, makeup brushes, etc)
DAY 3: Try a new (healthy!) recipe-- this could even be a healthy dessert or beverage
DAY 4: Try a guided meditation on YouTube for 10 minutes after waking up and before checking social media
DAY 5: Spend an extra 15 minutes working on something for school, work, hobbies, or your own personal development
DAY 6: Unfollow, delete, and block social media accounts and phone contacts that are just not part of your life anymore (or those who you plan on not having as a part of your life anymore)
DAY 7: Delete social media pictures that don't fit in with the best version of you. This could be the overedited photos, the thirst trap you put on there because that one person made you upset, etc.
DAY 8: Try a new workout that you haven't done. Pilates, ballet, barre, tennis, CrossFit, kickboxing, F45, cycling, running, swimming, etc.
DAY 9: Pamper your pet. Brush, clean, trim their nails, give them treats, etc. Go above and beyond for them today. (If you don't have animals, pamper yourself today!)
DAY 10: Enjoy the sunshine. Go outside (wear your sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat) for 15-20 minutes and enjoy your own company and nature.
DAY 11: No phone 30 minutes before bed. Set your bedtime tonight, and set an alarm 30 minutes prior to that. Once your alarm goes off, put your phone on DND and read a book before bed. Read until you are tired enough to turn off your lights and sleep.
DAY 12: Watch a documentary about something and learn! Maybe it's something you've never had an interest in. Just please make it positive! No heartbreaking or tragic documentaries. Let's not invite that into our "That Girl" challenge.
DAY 13: Buy a self-care item. This could be a yoga mat, face mask, cleansing oil, the Bible, perfume, etc. It can be as expensive or inexpensive as you'd like.
DAY 14: Go out on a date with yourself. Take yourself out to do something you've never done/been to before.
DAY 15: Aim to drink at least 60oz. of pure water today.
DAY 16: Spend 30 minutes learning a language you've always wanted to learn (and if you love it, practice for 10 minutes a day afterward)
DAY 17: Turn your notifications off.
DAY 18: No social media today.
DAY 19: Do something creative today. Buy a canvas, paint, and a brush, and follow a Bob Ross tutorial; maybe buy a jewelry-making kit. Take today and be creative for at least 30 minutes.
DAY 20: 10,000 steps OR walk for an hour
DAY 21: Go through your finances and see where you can budget. Take this time to audit your subscriptions and see if you would like to cancel any recurring subscriptions to save you extra money each month.
DAY 22: Avoid eating animal products today. Just focus on whole grains, fruit, veggies, nuts, seeds, water, and vitamins.
DAY 23: Schedule any doctor appointments you might have. If you don't have to, then take today to create a to-do list for the next 3 days.
DAY 24: Spend some time deleting pictures and making storage space in your phone. Any way you can-- it doesn't have to be from deleting your photos.
DAY 25: Listen to a new podcast or TedTalk.
DAY 26: Check your credit report/score and see if there's anything you need to do/complete.
DAY 27: Clear your email inbox and unsubscribe from the companies you don't shop from anymore.
DAY 28: Touch up on your resume.
DAY 29: Sort through your closet and throw away, donate, and sell your clothes and shoes that you don't wear (and that you know you'll never wear again)
DAY 30: Sort through your bathroom drawers and cabinets and organize them.
DAY 31: Create a vision board for April.

opinions on the new poogle day additions, oil paint and mythical?
Tumblr media
Oil Paint: I'm a little mixed on this one. As a whole, I really like it; details like the sketchy stripes and how the main mountain forms the standard underbelly area shows nice attention to detail, and the pink and soft slate blue color palette is very pretty and is well-balanced visually.
Tumblr media
My only hesitation with it is that it doesn't really feel like it fits the oil paint color. Oil paint pets are usually very impressionistic in nature, with focus on dramatic, bold brush strokes and abstract visuals (a few are also based on famous artworks, like The Scream and Starry Night, though it's worth noting not all of those artworks are actually oil paintings). The Poogle, which seems to have been based on a user request for a winter landscape with "happy trees" (read: Bob Ross-esq), is very pretty, but it doesn't quite fit the normal color standards. I'm not quite sure what else you'd do with it though, unless you did body paint or an outfit or something. Speaking of which...
Tumblr media
Mythical Outfit: Yeah sorry, not a big fan of this one. Admittedly I'm very rarely a fan of the full-body-outfits-that-are-really-just-colours thing to begin with, but this one's just... confusing? Like, there doesn't seem to be any sort of concept behind it outside of maybe being a kitsune, which doesn't influence anything but the tails (especially weird because Poogles aren't even remotely foxes). There's also a bunch of gemstones embodied into the fur... because.
I also don't think this reads enough like a Poogle (as it's too furry and also has a nose), and I'm not personally a big fan of the ultra-detailed fur and pillow shading. Neopets does have a bit of of an art style (black lineart with thick/thin contrast, one- or two-layer cell shading, simple detailing), so whenever they create a design this busy it feels a bit off-brand to me.
It's of course not all bad; I do like the cute little :3 expression and the fancy pink-and-teal eyes a lot, and the color palette is very nice! But the execution doesn't do it for me personally.

Is it possible to paint like Bob Ross using acrylics and synthetic brushes? I know his technique is designed for oils and natural bristles, but can a similar effect be achieved with cheaper materials? Does wet-on-wet still work with acrylic paint? Can you still blend colors on the canvas? I want to get into painting, but oils are prohibitively expensive at this time (even the lower quality beginner paints are like $7 per small tube, $15 per big). Maybe for Christmas I'll splurge, but right now I want to know if the cheap stuff is worth my time. You can do fantastic stuff with acrylics, I know that, but I am specifically trying to learn to paint like Bob Ross, so if they won't work for that purpose I can't get them. How fast do acrylics dry?

On Temporizing!
Tumblr media
So hype to see this fic finish! Was just reminded that I still had this in the drafts
(this is from Story Loop 232)
Thought the style difference would be fun - followed a Bob Ross tutorial (specifically: "Winter Night" - Season 3 Episode 4) for the main part of the window and played with the colors until I could more or less get the spooky shadow man. Used the fluffy watercolor brush and the blurring brush on ibisPaintX to mimic the oil paint style, and my normal Dip Pen (Hard) for the shadow eyes and everything else.
Sorry for rambling - here is the usual fic passage ref, pre-digital sketch, the layers for the Bob Ross portion, and fic (go read it)

You only miss me at 3a.m. when your loneliness crawls the walls of that apartment we used to call Home.
You only miss me when the other side of the bed isn't occupied by another placebo to get you by for the night.
You only miss me when an Isbell song comes on and you can't help but get dizzy remembering all the times I spun you around the kitchen like you were floating on air.
You only miss me when you're down on your luck and there's noone there to make me a common enemy.
You only miss me when you walk by the closet where you shoved all my paintings when I left. because spite wouldn't let you return them to me, yet you couldn't bear to look at them anymore..
You only miss me when you go to pick up those paint brushes that used to be mine. When you think of gesso, Bob Ross, or liquid white. Or Alabama 3 times. Salt & the Sea , The Lumineers, my fingers on the piano keys. Asking you to get me, when I felt insecure. And I know you couldn't have cleaned up all the paint that was on the floor.
You've deconstructed all we've built until you've rid yourself of the memories. But the things you seem to throw away are what meant the most to me. Pardon me for being rude or if this was unexpected. But I was always told since I was young much is given to those whom much is tested.
And ive felt forgotten, lost, and invisible before but I've never felt this small. sitting here by my lonesome, wondering if you even miss me at all..

If anyone in the world understood what was going through Chris' soul? It's Beth. Despite all the things he would tell her otherwise, Beth doesn't find herself particularly photogenic nor is she comfortable in her own body when it comes to others. Still, she thinks Chris is beautiful and he'd be viewed through the twin lenses of her affection and talent. The painting would be personal. "Of course I'm sure. Nevah would ask oddahwise." She's quick to reassure him. First she sets down her palette, her tubes of oil, her palette knife, her brushes. If anyone were to take a close look, they'd realise she arrays things the way she would arrange surgical tools. A habit long ingrained into her, one almost mathematically precise. "Besides, it's been years since ya sat proper an' dere's somet'ing charming 'bout oils on canvas. If ya don' believe me, aks Bob Ross." She waggles her eyebrows above that soft little grin of hers. They have a long history of diffusing awkward feelings with gentle humour. "But like where ya head is at. I jus' picked up a new sketch pad and colour pencils, an' pastels." One frail hand lands on his forearm and Beth takes a moment to look up into that deep smokey topaz gaze of his. "You know, yeah, dat you nevah hafta be shy wi' me. I'd nevah do any kine t' make ya unhappy or t' feel wrong." Though Beth might not have the same kind of magick that her brother had once, it seems she knew Chris enough to know exactly what memory he'd slipped into and is replying to that old conversation, that old insecurity in the moment. It's uncanny how often that happens between them. She bats her lashes and her expression turns playful once again when she joins him in the now. "Mmm. A drink an' mebbe you pick da mood music? An' I dunno. You look pretty handsome an' is a nice afternoon."

I'm currently learning more techniques from Bob Ross by following his videos in Procreate with the oil paint brush without pausing. It's a fun challenge. I would highly recommend it. You don't have to copy his paintings and you can take your time if you want but there is a lot to learn.

YOO BOB ROSSING IT UP
I went to a bday party and we did oil painting!!!
Everyone was just drawing what they wanted, since they actually had oil paints, I decided to followed a bob ross vid with the volume low and talked with my friends!
The canvas wasn’t primed and only water was provided (so the brushes were fucked by the end cause according to bob ross video that autoplayed when I got home, you need paint thinner)
ANYWAY BEHOLD!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Blurred my signature and replaced with online signature)
For my first oil painting and Bob Ross vid in a casual environment/not the best circumstances, I think it’s pretty decent first try!
Also here is the aftermath!
I got SO MESSY(Don’t worry I was okay with sacrificing my Schitts Creek shirt)

how do you practice backgrounds? well, you go on youtube for bob ross and ready your csp-given oil brush, and then three minutes in, you have a happy accident where you realize that the entire painting needs to be done on a single layer in order for colors to blend, and that’s why it looks like... goddamn limbo on the horizon (especially with the right picture)

So I had some unexplained eye pain on Monday and am on eye drops, but because I also had to work I have not been resting my eyes enough. This definitely means I have not been writing, watching my shows, or playing Atelier (and I was finally getting somewhere in Lulua again ;_; )
Instead, I watched a bunch of Youtube channels. And by ‘watch’ I mean ‘mostly listen to or watched with my good eye while I tried to keep from blinking my medication out of my bad eye’. But some of them are really interesting so here’s a list for any gentle readers who need some things to watch:
Baumgartner Restoration: Talks a lot about the materials, his experience, and processes of fine art conservation. Super soothing voice, lots of background noises like scraping and brushing, I don’t know or care what ASMR is but apparently this is similar. A godsend for when I wasn’t feeling good this week.
Steve Shives: I mostly watch his Star Trek stuff so far, because there’s soooo much to get through. Has both thoughts on the shows and response videos. A bit acerbic and definitely opinionated but he’s right about so much of it.
Guga Foods: Cooking and grilling, and preparation experiments. A lot of meat. Sooooo much meat. I have never heard the word “Wagyu” used so many times in my life. Fascinating though. Also has the channel Sous Vide Everything which has more variety of items and cuts, but sous vide looks so disgusting, it may turn your stomach even if you are okay with the weird meats. Keep an eye out for Leo and enjoy him; he does the best descriptions of the food they’re tasting, hands down.
Bob Ross: That’s right, entire seasons of The Joy of Painting! Watch from season one to learn the techniques and discover how freeing this method of oil painting is- and how dark some of his scenarios explaining the buildings in the pictures are.
Anti-Chef: More cooking and kitchen experiments. Has a “Jamie and Julia” feature where he does recipes from Julia Childs’ cookbooks. Does not hesitate from showing his failures which is nice, but his chaotic kitchen going sometimes makes me anxious and I want to get in there with a dish cloth. I guess French cookery is not conducive to clean-as-you-go?
Tasting History with Max Miller: Recipes and history in the same video! He’s not a pro chef or a pro historian, but he’s a great presenter and learning all the time. Keep an eye out for the Pokemon in the background of each video; they always match the theme somehow.
Chef James Makinson: Has both his own cooking videos and reaction videos to other chefs. One of the now-many chefs doing Uncle Roger reactions, but I like Makinson a lot because he’s very gentle in tone and in his responses, and includes great tips for doing things cost-effectively and with home tools.
Made With Lau: A Chinese restaurant chef sharing his recipes, and his son preserving them for the future, with sit-down dinner Q&As. I want to make my own spring rolls so bad now, and with their tips, I could probably do it.
Yes, I watched a lot of cooking lately. And I need to rest my eye soon, so also check out these channels, among others: TwoSetViolin, Bernadette Banner, Morgan Donner, Abby Cox, Artifexian, LangTime Studio, Biblaridion, How to Cook That (Ann Reardon), Dianxi Xiaoge, Chef Wang Gang, Fujian Grandma (the last three are Chinese-language, so turn on the subs. Dianxi Xiaoge has another channel for her dogs so keep an eye peeled, no reference intended, for Apenjie with Dawang).

Tried that round brush technique like Bob Ross uses and it sorta worked for me but I need to practice it more. Idk if it translates to gouache (he works oil) or if I missed some steps, mediocre first results but I also haven't painted in literally a year.
Anyways overall it's satisfying since I think I can make it work better if I fiddle with it. Might need a different brush than the one I got today though, didn't find any that seemed quite like the one he uses at the craft store. Ended up with a 1/2" mop but it doesn't feel like it's gonna do The Thing well.

abnormally large paintbrush aura Sometime before last Sunday (was October 1st), I began a project that involved making a series of twelve 8"x10" oil paintings by using a limited amount of tubes colours; three, to be exact, to make each painting. Not only that, but an added challenge was that at least four of these paintings had to be done exclusively by palette knife, of which I lack a variety of, but nonetheless, I prevailed. Some of them are still life paintings, and the rest are abstract and imaginative. All the paintings are ordered by creation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These two were made the same day when I initially started. It was a very Summer-themed beginning despite my intentions, more of a coincidence. The tree was the first one created, the first still life, the first done by palette knife -- lotta firsts, alright? It wasn't a bad start, but I definitely kicked it up a notch with the beach sunset beside it. I thoroughly enjoyed using the brush to create and blend the sky and the water. A few of the twelve, that one included, I feel I really tapped into my inner Bob Ross -- an alter ego named "Frob Boss", also coined that same day.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The next week, I made these three during the evening; that orange against a green backdrop and the geometric shapes one was an experimental use of masking tape, which I don't normally do, but that's the motif of this series: experimenting. One of my least favorites, unfortunately. Those two were done with the palette knife btw, and the umbrella was another still life (done by brush that time), I enjoyed doing it and worked late just trying to get some of the shading right.
Then came Sunday afternoon, where the next seven paintings come from. I was on a roll, lemme tell ya:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
That cup of Black Tea was sketched (the only one sketched also) either the day before that Sunday or...thinking on it now, it probably was before; I'm remembering the harsh kitchen light on the cup and...yeah, yeah, I was eating a Caesar Salad with chicken (my favorite), so it was probably the night before. YES IT WAS BECAUSE well you don't need any more details--it was sketched Saturday, then painted Sunday. These three paintings were done with the palette knife, and the third one is something to talk about: my uncle, one of the last times we spent time together, told us about an artist whose painting was hung in an exhibition. The painting in question, as described by my uncle, was just pure oil on canvas. This story made me question what people really consider art, but all I could think about was the process ("pro-says") of how that piece came to be: did the artist just splash Linseed Oil on the canvas and said "yes this is my vision"? Or maybe something that seems incredibly simple to do meant something far deeper from the artist/the context that makes the art? In the end, my uncle's story came back to me, so I gave the "Linseed Oil only" a try for myself. What I hope you can see is a simple landscape with a few mountains, and the sun in a sky of clouds. It's very hard to see straightforward, but at an angle, even on a screen, it's just barely visible. Finally, the upside-down forest in the middle is a favorite because it will always remind me of one my favorite Daria episodes, Art Burn, the one where Jane makes all these counterfeit/replica paintings of old and classical artists so she can make money to pay to repair her family's "Naming Gazebo" (later revealed to be all unimportant and not actually what is said on the tin), which results in a continuous creators' block, and negatively affects her ability to make her own unique artwork. One of the moments in the episode, pre-Jane-burnout, is at the art fair, where she had a Van Gogh she hung right-side-up, but painted upside-down, which few people commented on. That moment in the episode came to me while painting the centre tree after I messed up the upper branches.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After reaching my palette knife quota, I joyously switched back to brush for the final paintings. Let it be known: the only brush -- the one brush I used was a Simply Simmons size 12 something-type. The second of my four so-called "landscape paintings" is this dreamy landscape inspired by a memorable game, NiGHTS Into Dreams. The floor-ceiling nature of the level design always stuck out to me as really cool and has become something of a trope in my recent works. The "green-hills-and-tulips-against-the-sky" is just another example. Beside that, the sunset over and Autumn forest was an ambitious one. Another "Frob Boss" moment, but someone thought it was pepperoni sticks, and I'm not sure what those are, but they sound delicious. There's been another dreamscape painting I've wanted to make for a little over a year now. A story for another time...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Alright, the final two. Who dat on tha left? That's me: a self portrait (face reveal lolwut???) I decided to do after looking at my reflection in the night window. It lacks the eyebags I had at the time, but my facial hair is arguably the best part, but you wouldn't know that. Someone commented on how it looked sad. Little did they know, I was just tired. Last but not least, a simple apple. This, of all pieces, was NOT a still life, and I think that says something about me; my visual of apples is so strong likely because I eat them all the damn time, which also means I have to look at them too because I hold them, wash them, cut them, and again, eat them, so naturally, I would have a greater deal of knowledge of how to create an artistic rendering on an apple such as this. Somebody said the apple looked like it was rotting, which wasn't my intention, but I can see how. At the time of painting, I didn't think anything of it, but this apple is probably Honeycrisp, my favorite.
Tumblr media
HA-HAHA! HA-HAHA-HAHA! I LIED, THERE'S THIS ONE EXTRA PIECE I MADE! See, I did a miscount and made this thirteenth without paying attention to how many I did up to that point. I could've stopped at the apple if was more attentive before opening more canvas packages. I'll admit, this is the worst one in this series. I think it lacks creativity and heart. As tired as I was, I don't know how I pulled of the last seven. This hot air balloon over the wood(s)...I'm glad I ran out of ideas here, yet I'm also glad I made it so I have something to look back to, as I do with all things of my past; so that I have a story to tell.
Even though I rushed the final eight, I still had a nice time doing this project, and what helped me a ton were the canvases since so small compared to what I used to work with. It gave me some kind of clarity in experimentation. After the twelfth (I think), I came to realize "damn, I never thought about how ranged my painting style is". However, I believe this is only due to acting on impulse rather than a calculated, meticulous piece of artwork. Or maybe that's is what defines someone's art style: acting on impulse and creating something with such uniqueness, it could only be identified as YOU. Thanks for reading!

My grandmother taught me to paint. Oils, acrylic, you name it. Everyone in our family told me I had inherited her talent, when I spent long summer days sitting side by side, learning her techniques, watching the way she held a brush and mixed her paints.
I can’t bring myself to paint anything since losing her. I don’t paint like her, she had a delicate hand made for intricate realistic details, my strokes remain heavy, acrylics painting thick layers on canvas.
I’ve painted exactly twice since she passed, once within 3 days of her death, a single boat on a churning sea, with a sky so pink it’s almost sickening. Almost a full year later, my best friend sat me down to do a Bob Ross follow along, practically shoving paint into my hands to just create something. I cried the entire time.
I don’t know who I am without art, growing up I told everyone I was a painter, just like my grandmother. In the two years since she passed, I exclusively create with fiber arts and drawing on tablets, crocheting blankets and making comics for friends. I didn’t know grief would steal my steady hand from me, and make it so hard to try to paint a simple tree. I do not know how to find my way back to the artist who painted sunflowers for my mother, but I hope that she still lives on within me, even if the lines aren’t as steady and the layers take weeks to dry.

A few more Bob Ross paintings made in procreate with the default oil paint brush and a copy of it with an increased jitter value. I painted along without pausing as a challenge and I am enjoying the process and learning new techniques.

Tuesday 21st February 2023
warm up: these warm ups were 2 mins area and 2 mins background. I found the doing the rough shape of the area with a few brush strokes easier than trying to do it with the background. I tend to use short and sharp strokes instead to give the figure more movement, But I did try in the second image to use larger and fewer strokes to create the background.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Painting 1: I was really struggling with painting today and was getting frustrated with it, which I thought was evident in the background of this painting. I was also struggling to find the right composition on where to place certain colours. To me, my eye focused on the darker, warmer colours and black. It then gravitated to the tones of yellow and orange and then the green. Therefore with this painting I used more warm colours. I used that dark orange around the figure first so the eye traced over the outlines of the model. I wasn't happy with the process, and thought that it was missing harsher lines, so I outlined the body in black, which changed the initial focus to the centre of the body (for me).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Painting 2: This painting I tried to do a different approach with having a more blobby and thicker paint being used. Yet again I was getting frustrated with how it was turning out which I think is evident again. This time I did the area of the figure the dark orange so the initial focus is the figure, which to me didn't change when I added the black line. The swirling of brush strokes for the background made the focus travel around the body in a circle.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Painting 3: I used dark orange at the bottom left and upper right of the body to create a diagonal focus line. In either direction, the eyes are met with the figure as the focus line runs through it. In regards to the actual paint, I learnt recently (from Bob Ross) that thinner paint works well on thicker paint. I know he was using oil paints, so I wanted to test it out to see if it was applicable to acrylic - it did.

Notes from the lesson:
More things to deal with when painting rather than drawing
Colour
Composition
Form&pattern
Garter colour triangle - easier to remember
Human have 3 colour pigments, bird have 6- theft can see polarised light
Polarisation- light travels in waves- humans only see light bounced off
humans have pattern making minds
Big brains, tiny minds- small focus
Cave drawings + flickering light = first moving pictures
Need more ‘dreaming time’
Form with switch back and forwards
Each painting makes its own world
Brain make meaning-don’t need to worry about doing it at the time
Composition castle vs palace
Brain need constant change

WHY?!!? Oh, you evil curl of death! Go away!
I’m nice to my paint brushes, really I am. I buy cheap brushes though I cannot lie. Because they all do this. It is the first sign of impending death and destruction. The tiny curl at the end signifying your bristles are about to get really ugly. Within a few more uses you’re going to have stray hairs, you will trim those only to get more. The curl will get worse. The bristles will fray. It will become a dry brush.
This is why I sell miniatures. I’m hard on brushes. I don’t paint on a flat surface. I do use brush conditioner. “The Masters” Brush Cleaner and Preserver is my favorite and the only one I have used aside from the Bob Ross I use when I use oil paints, which should be past tense but there is always the chance I will get a bug up my butt and break them out again.
Buy my miniatures, please, just one or two... I need a new paint brush... like yesterday.
