Did you can please tell me weirdest adaptations of primates and other weird abilities of primates?

Personally I think the fact that multiple different primate species have blue skin is one of the strangest things.

It's fascinating because actual blue pigmentation is very very rare in the animal kingdom, so having blue coloration is typically a result of light scattering, in this case through flesh. Which means they are not "blue" but actually just evolved to have weirdly structured skin that makes them look blue from light scattering. Multiple times! At least three species that I was easily able to get images for! Isn't that just strange and fascinating?

As for more general primates adaptations though, primates have some of the most flexible wrists of the animal kingdom, which makes them very adept at climbing and probably also contributes to their ability to grab and manipulate objects so efficiently, leading to the creation and use of tools which we can see a lot of primates doing, and which of course our own ancestors passed along to us.

guy whos thinking way to hard about monkey ball voice: okay I have another another post of what kind of primates I think some characters are even though it isn’t specified anyway in canon

Jet bares a striking resemblance to a golden snubbed nose monkey to me ( notiably blue face, golden/yellow fur, the way his nose is pronounced) also another character who has a very visible tail ☝🏽

I THINK JAM IS A BABOON ☝🏽 a yellow baboon specifically ( I like the idea of there’s just many different kinds of primate species that ppl are just apart of in the monkey ball world. as well as many other types of animals taking into account fes, val, and tee…..) but idk he has a strong brow and nose compared to the other monkeys. he also has a longer face you know and his hair tuffs resemble the ears …

I think dr badboon is another specific species of baboon particularly the hamadryas baboon just from the fanning fur shape on the head…..that was an instant giveaway. they already established what type of primate he is is but I think it’s fun to think about what species he is specifically yknow ….

I mainly think this bc of ear shape but yoko’s appearence in banana blitz is so scarce I’m scraping for anything 😭 she in herself is not rlly grounded in realism bc she’s physic but she’s already stated to be a marmoset so I think she would be a gold and white marmoset…… she’s more silvery/purple but I think I can make that idea work. putting a pin in that tho we’ll go back to that ….

    Took me long enough but heres the sequel to the september cutting room floor. Ending this series for good. Staring in order by their number Starting with the entries made for 2022

    1. A mammaloid alien native to a dangerously cold planet iconic for it’s red and blue plantlife. They are skittish herbivores. Grazing along its planet’s “grass” by grabbing handfuls of plants with its oral tentacles and brought it to a mouth located in a hollow space in between its oral tentacles and head. And would sport vibrant patterns to blend in with it’s equally colorful forests

    2. Originally a suggestion by my friend Lemuel. They were a descendent of pill bugs/roly polies that evolved powered flight. They soared through forest understories with three sets of flattened legs and held onto branches with their hind pairs of limbs. In spite of the radical change to their movement, they would still act and eat like any other Armadillidiid Isopod. Only now they could get to their food much faster

Now onto the entries made for 2023.

    3. An alien predator that has all of our senses, but none of the familiar organs. They see the world with an organic sonar dish so powerful it could see colors as good as any eye. They smell and feel heat through heat pits on the sides of their body. They hear sound through sensitive whiskers on the feet of their hydraulic legs. And they eat and taste with a liquivorous proboscis.     And on top of their unique sensory organs and a testament to their overwhelming success, they are also freakishly intelligent. Not fully sophont, but still able to run circles around earth’s smartest life aside from humans.

    4. An orbital view of a carbon planet. A hypothetical world where it and the rest of it’s star system formed with much more carbon in its composition than standard oxygen. In place of water would be oceans and clouds of hydrocarbons. And nestled right in between the crust and mantle would be a hundred-kilometer-thick layer of pure diamond.     Sadly how life would evolve and take advantage of such a world was never conceptualized before spectember ended. Maybe someday this idea can be covered again and be brought to justice.

    5. A descendant of azhdarchid pterosaurs from the same world (or at least set of timelines) as the aforementioned Dinosauroids. They live in hierarchical herds where the strongest males have ownership over the herd’s female members.     They are also extremely violent, capable of killing their own predators if a hunt goes slightly wrong, And changes in power often escalate into bloody fights that could end in death. Some members are even willing to kill their herd mates' children if it means they get a chance to continue their bloodline.

6. A descendant of the golden snub-nosed monkey that has evolved to mimic the violet deathhead from my last official september post. Their fur is a speckled brown to blend in with the trees it lives on. The structure mimicking the deathhead sail is derived from nasal flaps once used to attract mates. The primate’s blue skin paired with clusters of veins within the nasal flaps create the iconic purple hue.     High concentrations of melanin along the tip of the nasal flaps mimic the black stripes. And even the orange spots are recreated by rows of unusually thin skin refract sunlight the same way the webbing between our fingers turns orange as a close light source passes through it

    7. A dinosauroid microbiologist who lived in a time when their people colonized the solar system. A Chia’J-di ecologist who lived in a time when their species’ industrial revolution provoked an equally powerful environmentalist counterculture, the globe they are holding is earth 500 million years in the future and long after pangea ultima split, the version of earth their species hails from. And a masculine female human sophontologist who lived in the aztec empire during it’s height. All pose for a picture.     Despite their different walks of life and origins of separate timelines. They are all heads of research within the earth division of the Inter-Timeline Evolutionist Union, better known as the ITEU

The ITEU is a non-profit, nongovernmental secret organization spanning the entire multiverse. With the goal of documenting and archiving the evolution of every species and civilization that has ever lived and will ever live across every possible timeline.     Their employee count ranges in the quantifiable infinity, and the division of a single planet is still big enough to utterly dwarf the largest and most technologically advanced civilizations ever documented. And their membership program accepts anyone from individual sophonts like you and I, galaxy spanning gestalt super-intelligence, to even celestial deities that create their own worlds and galaxies and seed them with life.  

    The symbol above the heads of the earth division is the logo of the ITEU as a whole. Surprisingly very little is known about the meaning behind it. Theories range anywhere from it representing the multiverse as a stream of timelines. The evolutionary tree of life, the infinite fractal-like scale of life and the multiverse. To possibly even the form of the ITEU’s founding species.     There’s a very good reason why the logo is a mystery to all. The ITEU has some pretty big flaws in spite of their noble goal. The organization is very secretive, even to it’s own members. Nobody outside the ITEU knows it even exists. The organization’s founders and early history remain a complete mystery. And despite its multiversal span being common knowledge. no one truly knows the full scale of this organization or the multiverse. 

    They are also very non-interventionist, and will stop at nothing to not leave a mark on the natural world and make any irreversible changes to the course of time. Even if it means never sharing their knowledge with the multiverse’s most advanced civilizations. Allowing interdimensional atrocities to keep going despite having the power to stop it. Or even keeping their own members from ever returning home.     This whole entry was meant to be a bigger grand finale to 2023’s spectember instead of the Batesian mimicry ring or the neurodivergent posthumans. And was meant to be a meta look at 2023’s entries and the genre of speculative evolution as a whole before spiraling out into its own thing entirely.

/'Twinkle, twinkle, little star, How I wonder what you are. Up above the world so high, Like a diamond in the sky.'/

Cold wind cuts through the trees. Branches swaying as they creak and groan. Chirping birds sing their music to one another to fill the air. Rays of sunshine cut through clouds to add some warmth to the cold land. Crunching snow is heard as a lone golden snub-nosed monkey travels.

Nova walks through the snow with purpose. Strapped to her back is her mighty bow. Carved by her own hands from a dawn redwood. A small hunting knife in it's sheathe on her right leg. In her hand is a worn axe, though sharpened to still be sharp as the day it was made. She is carrying a basket of chopped wood.

She has gone out into the forest to collect some firewood for one of the newly couples in her village.

Loud bird calls startle her, fur puffing out as she jumps. She clutches onto her axe, prepared to strike. Nova looks up towards the noise, glaring in annoyance at the three crows sitting low in a tree. She watches them chirp and caw at each other, having their own little conversation. A shiver runs down her spine as they peer down at her every few moments. Nova huffs, turning around to head further into the woods.

Time passes as the sun slowly dips further down in the sky. Strikes of the axe splitting wood filling the air as the sun lowered. Nova sighs quietly, content with all the wood she collected.

As a reward, she decides to grab herself a quick snack. She searches for a dead tree, as they are good hosts for lichens. Soon finding one, she pulls her knife out to cut off some lichen. She chews on her little snack. Cutting off a little more to store into a small pouch.

On her way back to the village, something odd catches her sight. Sticking out from foliage was a monkey leg. Covered in brown fur. Her eyes soften at the sight.

It wasn't uncommon to see a body out in the forest. In here, it was easy to get lost if you are not from the area. Many end up freezing to death. One should never enter these woods without a proper guide, or their existence shall be swallowed by the trees. Never to be seen again.

She walks over to where the body was. She blinks at the sight of the monkey. It was a mandrill, not a species that's seen in this area. Nova lifts her head and looks around. Unsure on how long this mandrill has been out here. Looking at how pale her face is and the glazed eyes, she's probably been out here for awhile. Nova bows her head, offering a silent prayer before walking away.

A small wheeze makes her stop in her steps.

She slowly turns her body to look at the corpse. Did she mishear? As the corpse stays still, as it was a frozen-- stiff and dead. Perhaps it was just the wind.

Before she could move away, another breathy wheeze could be heard. Nova scrunches her face, walking back over to the corpse with slow, careful steps. She crouches by the corpse. Reaching out to grasp at the stiff body, shifting her onto back. Nova stares down at the mandrill's face with a tense look. She lowers her head by the mandrill's mouth to see if she could hear any breathing.

None.

Nova lifts her head, pursing her lips. It's been a long night with her sick son, so she must've just been hearing stuff in her worry of his condition.

She examines the mandrill's body more closely. Brown fur with warm undertones of yellow and orange. The once bright red and blue markings are now dull from death. Her arms and legs are well defined, so she was a strong one. Chunky earrings in her ears. Many beaded bracelets on her wrists. A tattered shawl that may provide shade from the sun, but doesn't provide warmth from the cold.

Another small wheeze.

The shawl shifts on the corpse. Not from it suddenly breathing. Nor from the wind. Her eyes widen slightly as she hastily pulls the shawl apart. A gasp gets stuck in her throat as her throat closes up.

It's a mandrill infant. Tiny puffs of vapor leave her blue lips from the cold. Her fur is brown with golden facial markings on her snout and under her eyes. A short tail lays limp as the poor thing was curled up. The monkey infant shivers, curling up further into her mother's chest. Seeking warmth from the frozen corpse.

"Oh. Come here, little one. Come here," Nova coos gently at the infant.

Gently grabbing the infant's body to scoop her up. The infant scrunches her face in distress, clinging tightly to her mother's fur. Nova's brow furrows in worry.

"Hey, it's okay, little one. I promise," she shushes the infant in hopes she'll let go of her dead mother.

She is soon able to scoop up the infant. She was so cold. The infant squirms, clinging to Nova as she digs her tiny fingers into her fur. Nova's eyes soften at the gesture, holding her close with an arm before getting up, hurrying back home.

A fate worse than death had awaited this poor mandrill infant. Nova hopes the little one will survive the night, not knowing how long she’s been out in the freezing cold. She walks with purpose back to her village, her family.

The little one’s fate has been decided by Nova. She will take in this little one and raise her as her own. Aster deserves to have a little sibling. Almost like she sensed Nova’s resolve, the infant rubs her face against Nova’s chest. A huff of air leaving her weak lungs.

A soft but worn voice finishes their song. Their voice being carried by the winds. The monkey infant’s ears twitch at the voice in the winds that Nova cannot hear.

If it's not getting tiresome would you mind reviewing the mynci? They've been my favorite since childhood

The Mynci is our only primate Neopet (not counting TNT staff, the freaks) and it's... alright. Honestly, I'm kind of amazed we only got a singular monkey Neopet for this category, considering how diverse primates are all-around—you have baboons, gorillas, monkeys, lemurs, etc. It's not a bad thing, but it's head-scratching compared to the number of dragons and birds we have.

As our only primate Neopet, the Mynci is about as literal as you could get with a monkey—long tail, big ears, snub nose (their most distinctive feature tbh) and what seems to be exposed flesh over their ears, face and stomach, down to even having a belly button. I feel like they're kind of like Lupes, being real animals, but they don't have as incredible as a selection of colours to support them like Lupes do.

I guess my main problem with them is that there's no fur indicated on their bodies, just two hairs on their heads, which always gave them this weird feeling of being bald. I feel like just a few small tufts of fur in the right spots would've helped avoid this. Their body shape is also pretty standard. Out of the designs that were voted on, I kind of gravitate towards Mynci #2 here, which both has more fur and a more interesting body shape, as well as a more obvious personality to it. (Though I will admit that #3 is the most Neopet-ish of them all.)

Mynci were basically left untouched by customization aside from gaining a fist, so that's a plus.

Favorite Colours:

Stealthy: Stealthy pets sometimes end up looking incredibly busy, with too many details and colors, but the stealthy Mynci gets it just right. I like the subtle dark green and gold palette used to accent the stealthy colour's natural navy and bright blue eyes, and little details like the stitch marks. I also love how the symbols on its headband and belt are clearly in the shape of a Mynci's nose. The only minor thing that bugs me is that those two hairs on top shouldn't be visible.

Royal: I have no idea why these are Shenkuu-based and I do not care (I guess it's because China has a fair amount of monkey species IRL?). Either way, these designs are super pretty, and work well eith the Mynci's design. Both the royalboy and royalgirl feel on par with each other, with both sporting long flowing robes (hanfu) and luck charms—the main difference being the color palettes and the royalboy having a beard and hat while the female has a headdress.

For the record, both versions are fine with the UCs obviously being better, though there are some weird things we lost in the conversion—like, what happened to the RB's beard and tail cuffs, and why did its eye color change? What happened to the RG's ring? Why did the grey in the RB's eyebrows get lighter? But regardless, these are still solid.

Toy: Come on, it's a symbol monkey! You can't not like it. The purple base is pleasant as well and goes well with the red and peach accents, and it looks nice and plastic-y. Bonus points for hiding the fist. (The eyes should've been purple or red though.)

Bonus: If you want something more ape-like and don't vibe with the Mynci's overall design, give the mutant version a spin. I really like the gorilla-like stance and anatomy, the more muted colors with bright red accents, and little details like the devil-shaped tail and extra fur. My only nitpick is that having both ears and horns feels weird—should be one or the other.

I’ve been thinking of the little sibling trio having forms of basically what they are/what their big siblings is associated with and I finally got some actual finalized designs for these forms

Bai He as a monkey was actually kinda difficult to do (mainly coloring wise), I wanted her to be a golden snub nosed monkey, and that’s why she’s got redish hair and her arms hands, legs and feet are thicker, cause those funky monkeys have thicker limbs from what I could tell, the reason why her fingers and toes are blue is cause she was basically a living popsicle while LBD possessed her, and the blue eyes/light hair strands are also a side effect of the possession

Xian’s dragon form has been something I’ve been wanting to draw more for a while, and I did have a design down down for it (two actually, the second was a redesign but still) but tbh it could’ve been better? Plus I just couldn’t draw dragons good so I used this as a chance to improve the design and figure out how to draw dragons and they’re actually really fun to draw hxggehdh

Qingling’s bull demon form design was already pretty clear in my head? I had a pretty solid idea of what she’d look like, but before I finished I actually ended up making her bangs?/fur cover her eyes to help distinguish her from dbk since they both have purple fur, and I ended up really liking having her fur bangs (???) cover her eyes, Red Son is a bit awkward when she’s in that form cause she looms over him, even though he’s her big brother-

Manus design! The Ralads are also a pretty big departure from the books visually. I know they're supposed to just be small blue humans, but I could not stop imagining Manus as a golden snub nosed monkey for some reason lol. They're just such a cool-looking animal that happens to match the Ralad description pretty well. I actually liked how his anime design had cool patterns on his shirt, so I decided to incorporate it in my design. Iirc the Ralads are supposed to have a lot of embroidery on their clothes. Otherwise there's not much to say about his design. He's just a little guy. Also, here's an alternate expression to show his his mouth works. He's got funny mannerisms lol.

i REFUUUUSE to accept the portrayals of mrs coulters dæmon. i know we're never explicitly told in the books what species of monkey he is but just know the show is wrong for making him a golden snub nose and the illustrations are wrong for making him a green monkey and golden lion tamarin respectively. that monkey is a gee's golden langur and i will PROOOOOOOVE it

the book description of him basically comes down to being a beautiful monkey with extremely fine, golden fur, black skin, and who is capable of being Extremely scary. already rules out the golden snub nose because it is, notably, Blue As Hell. golden lion tamarins also don't really have black skin. it's definitely darker in some individuals, but not black. green monkeys arent really... GOLD.... and they do Not have fur that is "finer than human hair". even the golden monkey isnt particularly Gold, and is mostly brown and black. YOU KNOW WHO DOES FIT ALL OF THESE DESCRIPTORS THOUGH??????

also the monkey on the version of the collectors i read looks most like a gee's golden langur

As time had passed, as his skills had grown up and now he was able to do absolute masterpiece with his two hands. Of course nobody in the restaurant heard his complaints, he was next to the stairs, in the dark, to hide himself. From What ? For What ? Well, some days ago the young Monkie kid had received an important mission from his two mentors. A mission, including spying a stranger.

Spying the new staff his father, the boss of Pigsy's noodles, had hired almost two weeks ago. Indeed, the new staff was an unknown Monkie demon with strange features. She didn't look like any Chinese Monkie demon that they knew. She seemed experimented, Gray fur spreading on her mane, so she might be old too. So far she had had a gentle attitude towards everybody in the restaurant and didn't act like a threat to the city. She came soon the morning, and quitted the restaurant when the day was over. Like a normal employee would do. The evening after their first meeting, MK had run like a tornado to Flower Fruit Mountain. Running to his mentor at the same time as he didn't watch where he was bursting.

Flashback -

"Ouch! MK watch out you almost broke me a rib." Let out Sun Wukong, his body on the ground, a paw posed on his chest and his eyes frown with the hit he just received. MK was on his four, panting hard because of the effort he just give. Sweat on his front.

"Why are you here so late? We don't have training today, or I should say tonight." He asks while getting up, puffing his cape and the feathers that laid on his mane.

"Monkie King !" "There's a new…. a new…" Said the boy loudly, unable to catch his breathe.

"A New what?" Wukong's enthusiasm wasn't the best because of some previous fight he had with a certain Shadow Monkie. He was supposed to see him tonight to talk about it, and MK was upsetting his plans.

" A New Monkey demon !!!" Scream MK.

The Great sage golden eyes open widely at those words. A New monkey demon? Those words hitted hardly in his head.

A New Monkie demon.

A Monkie Demon !

He repeat himself as an idea cross his mind. A monkey demon from his past?! From his troop? Maybe from his troop?! Maybe it was a monkey that had survived the heavenly war!!!! Blood in his veins shotted his whole body as surprise gave place to excitement.

"What do you mean a new monkey demon! How do they look like?! Are they from here?! What's their name ?!" Wukong couldn't help but jump fast on his student, holding MK's arms with his fingers, his tail still.

"Hu… Well" Caught off guard. MK didn't know how to respond. "Their… She… Hu…".

"She? That's a female one?" Sun Wukong's brain race as he thinks of every female Monkie demon he knew in past times. Soon, the faces of his past friends come to him and he couldn't help but feel himself smile widely. "How does she look like?"

The boy swallows his thoughts, he had race the whole path to prevent from any threat, he wasn't gonna loose it now. "She's smaller than you, but taller than Mei, her mane is yellow but not the same yellow everywhere. And she has black tips.

"Black tips ?"

"Yeah, she has a really long tail, not roundish like yours."

That portrayal soon caught Wukong's smile and his happy sight. That portrayal was unfamiliar to him. He thought of a sort of Macaque at first, but the long tail details did not correspond. She wasn't a Gibbon either, maybe a Snub-nosed monkey? He knew some of them in the past.

"Does she have a blue mask and black eyes?"

"Nope her mask is grey with blue eyes."

"Blue eyes ?" Sun Wukong wince to that detail, he didn't know any monkey with blue eyes, it was something unlikely. "You sure ?"

"One hundred percent !"

"That's strange."

The two, student and mentor, turn their head to the voice in the deep dark of the cave, some glowy golden eyes with a hint of purple came across the shadow as would do Panthera's one. Coming out, a black furred monkey appear, a long cape following his steps.

"Macaque!" Claim MK as he reaches his second mentor happily. It's been quite long since those two had seen each other.

"Hey Kiddo. How're you doing ?" He asks, a smile upon his face at the view of his favorite student. He might not say it enough, but he really liked that kid.

"Actually not so great. I've been replaced at Pigsy's noodles, Mei is always busy and everybody is supper occupied with themselves ! I kept having flies in my place and they have cancelled Monkie King police series on the TV ! Did I said that I've been replaced at Pigsy's noodles ?!".

Waving his arms in the air as a bird will do, MK was clearly overwhelmed by his environment and the changes in his life.

"Alright kid, calm down you're gonna faint yourself if you don't catch up." Advice Macaque, a little bit worried. His glaze met Wukong's one, and for some concise seconds a quiet brief was told between the two of them. A brief about apologies and regrets. It was stupid to be angry with the other. Hopefully there wasn't any rage in the warrior's pupils, just a calm and familiar expression that Wukong loved deeply.

The Great Sage smirk and reach them, his arms crossed and his stand cool.

Then the three speeches about that new demon and MK tell his mentors everything he knew about her, her name, attitude, personality etc…. They decide not to confront her right now, MK will spy her and make proper portrait-robot of her and try to reunite some information about her.

At some point, MK went back to his home, using Macaque's Portal, letting those two together. Wukong yawn loudly, it was late in the night and he had been up for a long time today.

"Tired ?"

"Hmm.A little…"

Awkward silence in the mountain, as they didn't know what to say. Plus the fact that they had another concern now with that Li Wei lady. Macaque looked at Wukond, he, in fact, looked tired, he might not have slept in the night because of their fight, thought the warrior. Which made him feel regrets. Their fight was stupid, around the same topics as always. They didn't know how to say to each other what they felt inside.

Communication weren't their highlight.

"I'm sorry… For yesterday." Say Wukong, his eyes on the ground.

Macaque's ears upped a little at those words, touched by the strength that he knows his king had to pull to declare those words. He was still pretty prideful after all these years.

"It's okay." He replies simply, out of words.

And then the uncomfortable silence came back. Swinging his arms, embarrassed, Sun-Wukong let out another yawn, even stronger than the last one, cursing himself at the same time for his manners.

"I'm gonna let you rest." Tell Macaque, walking to the exit of the cave, back to the shadow.

"Wait- I…" Start the orange Monkie before cutting himself. Loosing his tense stand with a sight. It wasn't worth it "Have a great night." He merely says with a weary smile.

"Good Night Wukong."

And as the Moon gets higher in the sky, as the shadow of the warrior grows far away from the mountain where the sun lived. Unaware that some long constellation could be seen in the sky too.

Everything was complicated…
