Pinned post! (ok to reblog)
I talk about Mastodon every so often, so I tend to want a quick "and here's how to join" guide I can link to. Here it is! (updated Sep 2024)
First: the fandom side of Mastodon is great. There aren't a lot of us, but it's cozy and well-moderated. We have nice conversations and fun events. I'm currently running a daily mini prompt game, we've had ship bingo games go around, I want to get back to running character tournaments, and danmei read- and watch-alongs pop up every so often (there's a TGCF readalong ongoing). It's a bit like a cross between Tumblr and a Discord server.
Also: YOU CAN POST PORN. Full-on cocks in holes and everything! Or you can easily avoid it, because marking it as NSFW is required, and the filtering options are excellent.
Anyway. How to join:
The server I recommend is blorbo.social. It's an 18+ multifandom server, and it allows personal posts as well. The mods are fandom people who care about fandom creators (attributing works, preventing harassment, etc.) There is a 3,000 character limit per post (about 750 words, a bit longer than this post).
If that sounds good, here is a walk-through to minimize confusion. Of course, please do what you want, but I find that a lot of people want to be told what to do here!
Don't look at the app store yet.
Sign up on the website (blorbo.social/auth/sign_up) in your browser. No need to write an essay, just mention fandom
Wait for your approval email
NOW check the app store. If/when you want an app, search for "Ice Cubes" (on iOS) or "Moshidon" (on Android) (not "Mastodon")
When the app asks, your "server" or "instance" is "blorbo.social"
(You can also just use the website - I'm adding app instructions because everyone seems to want them!)
Add something to your profile to show that you're a real person, just like on Tumblr: you can add a profile picture and bio, and you can make your first post! You can introduce yourself and list tags for your favorite fandoms (it can be as simple as "hiiiii I like #TGCF!"). Pinning that post is also good.
Follow a bunch of people and hashtags, since there's no algorithm. You can search for "xieliansbignaturals", if you'd like to follow me!
From there, you'll figure it out! I'm very happy to answer questions, but I don't want to load this post with so much information that it's overwhelming.
I hope you'll consider joining us!

I wonder what it takes for you guys to finally make the move to mastodon/fediverse tho. JP/KR/CN artists migrating to misskey? (my JP mutuals still be sticking to twatter tho despite everything lol, meanwhile RL acquaintances are on misskey AND mstdn/jp already... it's why I ditch my kinda normie mstdn/jp account I dun wanna be found out lol + it was really slow yesterday)
I wanna stop treating my tumblr like twatter

Pertinent community guidelines for artists on BlueSky, especially in regards to adult art AKA PORNography.
from the community guidelines:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
no "content portraying minors in a sexually explicit context", so if you're Steven King don't write the kids from IT having an orgy in the sewers while pennywise dances
no "depictions of excessive violence, gore, torture, dismemberment, or non-consensual sexual activity". Using specifically the word "depictions" makes me think that they're intentionally covering cartoon art as well as real violence. But of course there's still a vibrant guro tag:
https://bsky.app/search?q=guro
there's stuff in the noncon tag
https://bsky.app/search?q=noncon
And I'm sure there's people posting horrific gruesome special effects makeup from horror movies in other tags.
Just because there's people posting in the tag doesn't mean it's allowed. And any faceless platform can pull the rug from you, or change the rules without warning, or, or

So I'll happily stay on my current fediverse server and feel safe posting horrible gruesome centipedes in vaginas â˜ș The finances seem stable, the moderators feel good (haven't seen any racists or nazis), and I can just link my art to anyone who wants to see it on other platforms. The rules are clear enough to distinguish works of art and writing from actual real videos and photos of death and torture and abuse.
But the wonderful thing about "federation" is that we can talk to each other no matter what site we are on :D Who knows if the bridge between fedi and bluesky will keep working with me if the content rules are different though :P
SO! If you are already on the fediverse (which includes Mastodon, misskey, ruffy, and other softwares), you can follow me on blorbo.social and we can talk to each other normally without any complex tech gimmicks. You can also dm/message/email me for an invite to blorbo.social. Or just sign up yourself!
If you're on BlueSky, you can follow me on the mirror of my Fediverse account :D (you can also create your own fedi->bsky mirror)
The mirror will post the same things I post that are public, which includes my art and other's posts that I share. If you follow the bridge account (which creates your own mirror), then you can reply to my posts on Bsky, and I can reply to you from my Mastodon account, and we can hold hands and sing.
It's kinda complex and full of tech jargon, so if you don't want to do all that, it's fine. It's an option if you have 5 minutes to spend. And my art will always be available to see on various sites including my own that do not require log-in to view.
Thanks for reading. This post was copy/pasted from my fedi account (woohoo 5000 word limit), then edited with more information lol.

Tumblr media
hello! I saw your account is locked now on twitter (or xitter?) do you happen to be on bluesky now?
Hiya and uuuh....at the current moment I am not on bluesky and probably won't be on it for a while. From what I've seen from other peeps who made their accounts, nothing about it appeals to me and I'm kinda miffed I can't even lurk on it to get a feel for the culture/environment (can only go off from others opinions and opinions can be biased).
That and I'm on mastodon as my twitter replacement and it feels silly to go from a site that offers me a lot of privacy/filters/accessibility to a site that is lacking in the most basic functions atm.
But! If bluesky either opens their registrations or I get a code and it does bring more features I'll make an account and post it here.

hi, i saw your post about different socials/sites and i'm curious to ask what your experience on mastodon has been like? i've been interested in checking it out but it's hard to know what kind of "instance" i should join in that case, or generally what the culture/etiquette there is like!
OKAY. so! your experience on mastodon will be heavily influenced by the instance you join—it might be best to shop around for instances that fit your interests! for example, i use mastodon primarily to get tech news/web news that nobody else on the web seems to talk about, so i joined the tech.lgbt instance. as such, when i log on there, i definitely see shitposts and things from the younger members of the instance (early 20s) but even the shitposts tend to relate to tech things a lot of the time. it's pretty much a lot of tech talk. some instances let you view what other people on the instance are saying before you join—you'll see the the option for "live feeds" on the right side (if you're on a computer), for example! mastodon.social, the most generic and popular instance (249k active users as of right now), has this option. obviously, if you join a generic instance like this, you'll see a lot of EVERYTHING. an instance for fandom is blorbo.social, a popular one for anime/manga content is sakurajima.moe, which i've also linked the live feed to! you can find a metric fuckton of instances to search through here!
i've been part of three instances—mastodon.social (generic), mas.to (also generic) and tech.lgbt (topic-oriented). being part of the generic instances ultimately gives you the most general social media experience, and you'll probably find yourself ignoring your local server feed (the other people who are in the same instance) and curating your experience via people you follow the same way you would on here! being part of a nicher, topic-specific instance may provide you with more entertainment right off the bat based solely on the fact that you are already connected with people who are also interested in things you like.
(ultimately, it's just like picking an email provider—yahoo, gmail, aol, etc.—that allows you to communicate with people with both the same email provider or with different email providers! it's just that it also comes with a community page of people who use the same email provider as you, if that makes sense at all. just find one you like, read the rules, and you're good to go!)
using mastodon is a LOT like using twitter, if you're familiar with it—it has its own lingo, of course (toot instead of tweet, for example), but the layout of the site/app is pretty twitter clone-ish. the difference is that while twitter is, in recent times.........Conservative/Right-Leaning As Hell, mastodon is so liberal/left-leaning that i've seen people describe it as TOO liberal/left-leaning, lmao. if you join a niche instance and venture outside of it, prepare to see a lot of political posts. interaction between users is encouraged, though because it IS filled with a lot of techy people no matter what instance you join, prepare to see the occasional techbro every now and then. it's easy to avoid them, though.
a Very Big Thing about mastodon—the circles i'm in, at least—is that alt text on images is a MUST. if you've never done alt text on images before, be prepared to learn or whatever you post WILL be ignored to hell and back because some people will straight up refuse to interact if you post an image with no alt text. it's also important to note that some instances of mastodon have moderation problems, which you might find being discussed by users on there a lot.
ultimately, i'd say my experience on mastodon has been positive—i've followed some genuinely interesting people on there (a lot of university professors and people in the workforce—i've learned more about SpaceX satellite waste in the last few months because of an astronomy professor i followed than i ever would've had i not joined!). if you don't feel like eternally searching for an instance you like, there's nothing wrong with just joining a generic, "catch-all" instance and then just seeking out people to follow. just make sure to read and follow the rules of an instance (which usually amounts to "be friendly" "no hate speech" and whatnot—depends on the instance, but it's all the same) and you'll be fine no matter how you talk or interact. you might find some instances that prefer you to use tone tags and some whose userbase has never even heard of tone tags—there's a lot of different "holes in the ground", so to speak!
(i will say—despite me linking a couple of fandom instances above, there really isn't much of a fandom presence on mastodon as of right now. not that i've seen, at least. you'll find a lot more people talking about their real-world interests (tech, gardening, marine biology, knitting, whatever) than you will someone going nuts over a fictional character. so if you're super into fandom, or super into a NICHE fandom, you may find yourself a bit lonely over there if you don't have a group of friends to migrate with you. if you don't mind that, then it works out! )
i hope this helped a bit! ^.^
EDIT: FORGOT TO MENTION. CONTENT WARNINGS ARE A BIG THING OVER THERE. you can hide your post behind a sort of "spoiler" type warning (like discord basically) and a lot of instances require you to content warn for certain content (gore, food, etc.) it's a VERY big thing.

Originally posted last weekend on my Blorbo.social after seeing the IQIYI ending extra for Mysterious lotus casebook
I know there seems to be something of a consensus that the open ending a sad one, that Li Xiangyi is gone.
Yet it doesn’t feel this way to me - it’s an open ending.
Lxy jumped into the boat on the river with nothing but what he was wearing. It’s what he’s still wearing when he writes the letter on the boat.
It is not what he is wearing standing on the beach. Clothes, cloak & hair pin are different. It inner layer is something other than white.
He wears a red inner layer as young pre-poisoning lxy, but as llh it’s always white.
Llh wears wooden hair pins - on the beach it’s ivory or bone. It’s the only time we see him wear this.
We see why fdb hurries there. A man at the roadside says he found the bag of sweets on a dead man on the beach.
It’s 3 months after lxy disappeared, when he had less than a month to live. A body that’s been floating in the sea/laying on a beach for 2+ months is not going to have sweets on it you are going to consider eating.
Dfs simultaneous arrival - what was his tip off to go racing there?
Fdb & dfs & fox spirit stop and look, but we never see what they see. They halt, it seems mostly in disbelief.
Fox spirit is happy - why would show him happy if he wasn’t getting to see llh again?
I can see how it can be interpreted as lxy having died on the beach, but it’s only one interpretation of the scene.
Alive and cured, or alive and somehow still poisoned, or dead. none is absolutely proven or disproven.
So I will chose the alive option.
——
Added here on Tumblr now I’ve seen the differently edited extra as it appeared when it was broadcast on CCTV.
Which although very similar to the iQIYI one is edited slightly differently so you get a sense that they are all on the beach together.
They’ve done something too with the lighting of the scene. It’s warmer. The last view of any of them before it the view pans out across the sea is lxy/llh with a small smile on his face.
I’ll take that as my happy/hopefully ending.

The news of Tumblr getting a massive staff cut inevitably make me expect the worse, so here's a reminder of where to find me:
MAPPAPAPA: my website. Shrines, store, comics, fics, event archives, any and all things that I feel like making or sharing end up here eventually.
Fediverse: on blorbo.social, my chattiest social media. Mostly talk about what I'm playing or watching at the moment, post art and occasionally WIPs.
Twitter: my activity has declined heavily with the news of data scraping for AI, so all art shared here is actually posted to Poipiku.
Other less active haunts are listed on the links page of my site.
This blog is currently my only active gallery for older and current art, so if (when) it goes down I'll be back to square one. I might start building galleries for my site in the near future if I get motivated enough. On the flip side, there's some of my R18 work there that you can't see anywhere else. Thanks for that, modern era corpo-bleached web!
I'll continue to share my art here whenever possible. This is a "just in case" post. Thanks for reading!
