The colonization of the life world means that life activities formerly subject to traditional norms, spontaneous action, or collective decision become commodified or are brought under the control of state institutions, and thus become normalized, universalized, and standardized. Persons within welfare corporate society often do not challenge these forms of domination and depoliticization, partly because they seem to be the price of the material comfort the majority of people have. Those without material comfort are even less likely to challenge the authority of institutions that define their behavior and needs, because they are more dependent on them than others. Two other phenomena legitimate the structure of welfare corporate society and make it difficult to challenge its forms of domination: the ideology of expertism, and the hope of social and career mobility

This handsome young fellow is Frank Jr., a feral cat who’s moved into my garden/garage a few months ago, and has been gradually domesticating himself and it is FASCINATING to experience firsthand.
This little dude is so friendly and clever, he has struck up a friendship with my darling son (feline), Digby, through the window, and by observing Digby with me, deduced that I’m not a threat. Thus he now seems to consider himself my cat.
I would bring him inside if I could, but my elderly cat, Peggy (13) would kill him, then me. He’s made it clear he’d love to be an inside cat, but at present the best I can do is provide him with unlimited food and water, several cat beds/insulated pet houses in my garage, toys, and lots of social time together.
I’ve found a way to help cover the cost of getting him checked out by a vet, to get him vaccinated, chipped, and neutered. So now we’re working on building trust so I can get him into a cat-carrier, and have him quarantined in my bathroom for a bit.
Anyway, I’m writing this while freezing my ass off in my garage, because he wanted some company while he napped.

Oh you mean Hamas is executing and/or shooting anyone who breaks into their storehouses of supplies made up of the aid that has been sent into Gaza and was supposed to be distributed to the civilians there?
You mean Hamas has been hoarding all the aid that they were supposed to distribute to the civilians they oversee as the government?
You mean Hamas aren't actually the resistance fighters whose goal is helping Palestinians like their supporters say they are and are, in fact, harming the very people they're supposedly "liberating"? You mean Hamas literally has confirmed these very acts in their Telegram channel? That's wild who could have foreseen any of this.... Oh right, those of us who have been saying from the very beginning that Hamas was not your freedom fighter blorbo. They're an Islamist terrorist organization whose methods of "liberation" involve harming, killing, threatening, and/or crippling their own people repeatedly.
But ya'll have literally been following straight up antisemitic Islamist accounts on here (especially the notorious Jewfaking one) and across social media that have been slowly feeding you antisemitic rhetoric so that now any time something like this happens you either dismiss it as "Jewish Zionist propaganda" or justify it in some way.
Hamas is even admitting to doing this in their telegram channel and yet you won't hear anything from the pro Hamas propaganda accounts on this site.
Ask yourself "why?"
Why would these accounts that purportedly care about Palestinians not report about the hoarding of aid supplies, the harm done by Hamas against them, and the executions? Unless the entire thing was to push a specific agenda and foment a hatred in you, the reader, that ends up turning into antisemitic rage and results in a seething hatred.

I have this growing theory about how Deltarune is playing with metatext as a concept and the idea of having friends that "aren't real" "in another world" and how it ties into how many people engage with fiction emotionally and I think about how oddly fond sounding of us Gaster sounds in that halfway point dialog...
What if, just how we're attached to the Fun gang and the worlds of Deltarune, Gaster is fond of us? Like.... what if The Player is his favorite blorbo to watch?
I mean think about it. He first distributed this game as a "survey program" that countless people are interacting with, so he has countless options and timelines and alternate paths to watch and rewatch.... Just like how I watch streamers and let's players play the same game over and over.
Diagetically? Deltarune is a program. A program only has certain routes and certain outcomes that can happen. It's a static thing that WE are interacting with. The players are the variables in this experiment, not the survey program.
And, Gaster talks is so proudly about "his" Deltarune there. So, if you lean into the theory that the player is the angel? The figure IN the Deltarune?
What if WE are "his Deltarune"? What if when he said that, he was referring to us with an affectionate nickname?
What if Gaster is forming that level of parasocial fictional affection that we have for our favorite characters, but for the player?
What if we're his favorite character?

Some writing inspo for the Emmrich fans this morning, may I present: my late Uncle Frank.
Frank put the gentle in gentleman and to this day, I've never met anyone so consistently well groomed, well kept, and genuinely pleasant to be around. He:
Showered and shaved every day. This took a good 20-30 minutes and we had to either let him get ready first or make him go last, or the rest of us would never get a decent shot at all having time in the bathroom.
Wore the same aftershave consistently, Brut, which is described as citrus top notes with hints of spicy woods.
Once dyed his hair when I was around 5 years old to cover the greys (he had brown hair as a younger man) and I disliked it so much he never did it again. He had gorgeously natural grey hair for the rest of his life - again always well kept and trimmed.
Used to co-ordinate his boxers and socks. My Aunty Mo, bless her, only realised this after 40+ years of marriage, and the story came up at his funeral.
Had a perpetual supply of clean pressed handkerchiefs, which were distributed to guests at his funeral.
Did all the ironing throughout his marriage.
Had specific clothes he wore for specific activities. He would not wear his day clothes to do the gardening, or play with me, etc.
Bought my Aunty Mo the same Yardley's English Lavender bathing products every year for Christmas.
Could never be trusted to share an ice cream or a can of soda.
Read the newspaper every day, and would always walk to the shop to buy it.
Anyway. Maybe this helps with writing everyone's favourite Thedas silver fox and/your blorbos ❤️

introducing: bring your fandom to work week!
Tumblr media
• take that blorbo (DC, Marvel, or both!)
• put him in a (workplace) situation — AU? undercover mission? up to you!
• give us a look into the nitty-gritty everyday reality of that workplace, and feel free to show off your expertise/teach readers a thing or two
• post to the collection between February 17th and 21st
some examples of the genre are under the cut!
Like A Good Neighbor by @kindaquirky - in which Tim Drake works in insurance. love the peek into what actual Gotham insurance policies might take into account.
Possible Cardiac Arrest by @kangofu-cb - Nurse!Clint and Firefighter!Bucky. you can absolutely tell this was written by someone who knows what they’re talking about.
Feed The Birds by Moxibustion - vigilante food trucks. never thought I’d be so interested in food distribution systems or the red tape involved in social programs.
On My Mind by @claraxbarton - a (very sexy) glimpse into the glamorous world of college faculty.
Ain’t No Compass, Ain’t No Map by @ebjameston - aka Gotham CPS, featuring one of the best OCs around.
it’s a golden thing he’s got by @scootcommander - sheep herder Bucky Barnes in a cozy, well-developed AU.
The One Where Clint Goes To Preschool by @noxnthea and @there-must-be-a-lock - preschool written by teachers, complete with direct-from-real-life kid quotes.

Coming in hot this week with a new show plus an ongoing favorite. We also have Takara no Vidro and Ayaka is in Love with Hiroko! next week--we are back in the jql flood (yay!). Look forward to those and pray for international distribution so we can all watch TNV soon.
I Hear the Sunspot
Tumblr media
I am so hype for this show. Twelve whole episodes to tell this story properly! The film version, Silhouette of Your Voice, is very cute but suffers from its short runtime. This one seems like it will be a more faithful adaptation of the full manga and I am thrilled. We started strong this week with the introductions of our main characters, Kohei and Taichi. I really love the way they are calibrated in this version, and Taichi is an instant blorbo. I also liked the choice to open with a look at Kohei's despair in the future before going back to the start, as it grounds everything nicely in the stakes for him. The show is also already doing a great job of unpacking Kohei's perspective on his hearing loss and the way others treat him as a result.
@nicks-den is also planning to fan sub this one, so look out for those updates. I recommend watching on Gaga when it comes out to give it the views and then revisiting with the better subs later in the week.
Bonus: Ossan no pantsu ga nandatte ii janai ka
Tumblr media
Episodes 7 and 8 have been made available on @isaksbestpillow's blog, and this show continues to be glorious. Highlights from these episodes include the return of Hasegawa (with newly glowing skin) and Kakeru continuing to make friends and settle on a career path in makeup, Mika learning to let her family appreciate her, Makoto's confusion about whether Kakeru likes boys or girls, Kakeru's frustration that he's trying to figure that out at all, Daichi's anxiety that he is making Madoka's life more difficult, Madoka's fear of losing him due to his inability to come out, Makoto's continued efforts to confront his senior and change his workplace for the better, and a lot of hard won bonding and connection at the festival. Phew, this drama packs in so much in every installment and it all feels so natural.
My favorite thread in these episodes was the parallel they drew between Makoto and Kakeru and their struggles with communicating effectively. Kakeru's impatience and dismissiveness toward his parents' attempts to connect with him at the start of the story are akin to Makoto’s own former impatience and dismissiveness about anything he didn’t understand, and it was such a huge moment of growth for Kakeru to recognize that. Part of growing up is developing empathy for your parents and recognizing your own similarities to them, and I love that he is starting to open up and give Makoto grace as he earns his trust back. I also loved the conversation between Makoto and Madoka and the way they helped each other understand their respective situations better. This show keeps surprising me with how attentive it is to all of these relationships and connections.
Passing to @bengiyo for a manga update.

Captain Kiss of the 343rd
Blorbo of my own creation. Whom i love and adore. Who didn’t survive the war to let her assigned gender get in the way
Text under cut 💜
AKA, Kisses (Duo), Capin' (The twins), Smooch (DT). The name Kiss comes from the kiss curls that frame her face. She styles these baby hairs, and paints curls on her bucket to match, along with teeth on her armour to resemble her beloved pet and service Massiff, Mooch. Captain of the 343 company on Naboo in the Lake Country.  Not to be confused with the sprawling fields and grand estates. This troop guard an outpost a few clicks from Auroa, a ranching village, as a look out for oncoming ground/swamp infiltration attempts. If the senators living it up in the Lake Country or the capital of Theed are under any threat, they'll know about it first, so its mostly surveillance and scouting work.
Kiss was originally designed to be a CC unit, but as a cadet crying too much saw her reconditioned and transplanted into a CT batch that had just lost a cadet in training. Crying is still difficult if not impossible for Kiss, who comes off as tough and aloof but feels things deeply. Kiss was deployed as heavy infantry to Geonosis in the first clone trooper assault, and took over as Captain of the company she was in when their Captain died. The role would remain hers for a time until she was struck down by a mortar shell that almost took her jaw. The wound would be cosmetic but the implant to replace the structure of her cheek and the horror of being unable to breathe or speak for so long would have lasting effects. But she's a good soldier, and despite the few and far between episodes, she is exemplary, but the danger of her doing so during battle is too much of an unknown that she is inevitably shipped to Naboo to aid the Naboo Royal Guard in protecting the mid-rim edge planet. A somewhat menial task for a would be perfect soldier. But it wouldn't be all bad. Mooch would be assigned to her as a pup.
Mooch was too docile to be an attack massiff but showed talent in being a service dog. When they met, the pup was able to detect an oncoming attack in Kiss and pawed at her until she complied with her demands.
Kiss would join two other clones in being the first clones to request transition. And seeing as her involvement in the war was considered to have little impact, two years in, she was approved. With her identity known to higher ranking clones. She would aid in the transfer and protection of other "Obsolete" or "faulty" clones. Some would stay with her and name themselves the 343 company in her honour.
Bonus: Nabooen locals worship a goddess called Hemeela. A goddess of bounty and beauty, known to take many forms but to be a brave fighter and mother.
Upon discovering this deity, Kiss made her identity known to her vode and now lives as a woman adopting markings that match scars Hemeela received in her battle against the all-consuming Jutorus.
She is in a constant debate with Duo about the nature of her weight. Hormones are new to her and have changed the distribution of fat much to her delight but to Duo's despair as they state "A fat ass isn't regulation." Much to Kiss’s despair.

tuesday again 1/21/2025
hey it's fucking snowing here in houston texas! what the fuck!
listening: toes by the glass animals
reading: the steerswoman series by rosemary kirstein, and the gay and lesbian erotica book of the week, candidate by tracey richardson
watching: various david attenborough documentaries
playing: brief genshin impact report
making: banana bread
listening
glass animals' toes: my best friend's husband and i were chatting about music my best friend introduced us to, and my god there's been so much! i remember back in 2018 i did not expect to like them bc we had wildly diverging indie rock tastes at the time, but they really do scratch something in my brain. very good writing music, bc each album has such a tightly curated vibe and the words are recognizable english but so poetic as to be mostly nonsense. this song is loosely about The Island of Dr Moreau. my best friend has described this song as "like listening to crayons melt"
I'm a man, I'm a twisted fool My hands are twisted too Five fingers, two black hooves I'm a man, don't spin me a lie Got toes, and I can smile I'm crooked but upright
youtube
a song for very few blorbos but when it hits for a blorbo it Hits yanno

reading
im having a brain time that is favorable to reading many books in one week. we're going to start with some i loved and then go to the gay and lesbian erotica, which i did not love and did not finish.
Tumblr media
talking about which post led me to this series would give you an enormous spoiler for the book. we're going to yoink the Setting from wikipedia:
A Steerswoman is a traveling scholar, required to answer any question asked of them, as long as the asker answers truthfully in return. Anyone refusing to answer a Steerswoman's question is placed under a ban, and no Steerswoman will answer their questions in future. Only wizards do not respect the Steerswomen, maintaining intense secrecy around their magic. Kirstein's work is often characterized as science fantasy. Jo Walton describes the Steerswoman series as "not only science fiction, but more science fictional than anything else."[1] Cory Doctorow says of The Steerswoman, "even the book's genre is a riddle that you'll have enormous great fun solving."[2] The Steerswoman series addresses themes of technological development, inter-species interaction, and distribution of knowledge.[4]
i ADORED these. i did basically nothing for two days except apply to jobs and read these books. these are physics brain books. these are Science Fiction with the capitals on books. the first chapter has someone derive a bit of orbital mechanics from first principles by making logical inferences from a chart she drew in the dirt about distribution of certain jewels. despite that, it's never boring! sometimes the steerswoman Rowan will puzzle over something for several chapters before something finally clicks for both you and her. the books are one big nested riddle, and you have all the pieces from the beginning! it just looks so strange from Rowan's eyes that you don't figure it out until she does! and even when you figure out one bit you just have more questions!!! and despite knowing a huge spoiler going in, part of it really blindsided me! it was a very clever bit of writing! good job rosemary!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and now for the gay and lesbian erotica book, which again has a 3.8 on goodreads and again i have no idea why. published in 2008 by Bella Press in a very indifferent perfect-bound ~250p softcover with the most creasable cover imaginable, our author Tracey Richardson is a Canadian writing about an American presidential candidate. from what i read, the political speeches were the best part of the book. this was genuinely groundbreaking and revolutionary in 2008 for a Democratic presidential candidate to openly support the LGBTQ+ community! i think Tracey put a more progressive veneer on some of JFK's speeches but that's okay they still hit! that man did have some talented staff members and a great stage presence!
i tortured my best friend by reading snippets of this aloud and removing her toddler daughter from various mischief as she cooked, and we got really stuck on the presidential candidate Jane's age. she is forty three. she is a medical doctor. she lost her husband ten years ago when she had her own private medical practice at THIRTY THREE. she left for a year to do Doctors Without Borders, started a nonprofit in America about healthcare access, and is now a second term senator. this had my bestie and i doing back of the envelope math and we can only conclude she never slept or went on vacation.
i have many beefs with this book, both petty and with regards to construction. my best friend got extremely peeved at the description of someone's accent as "a well heeled eastern seaboard accent". WHAT the fuck does that mean. WHERE on the eastern seaboard??? the standard American Newscaster Accent is faintly midwestern. did they have a sort of bland tidewater politician faint drawl? who knows! this canadian author cannot tell us :(
Tracey is a big fan of dropping details very late. eg we only find out on page 8 after a lot of dialogue that love interest/Secret Service agent Alex has a southern accent. Five pages into a party scene we find out she’s wearing a hawaiian shirt. i had to go back and reread the entire party scene with that in mind. on page 42 we find out Alex is an Olympic gold medal hockey player in the first year women were allowed to play Olympic hockey. earlier in the book we see her playing hockey for funsies with her rec league and we also go over her dossier in detail with Jane. either place would have been a great place to bring this up!!!
this book is also very reverent of the office of usa politicians in a way i find strange for a canadian. and for alex, a somewhat jaded civil servant. alex!!! she’s just a rich nepo baby and has good stage presence!!!! stop falling for it!!!
Tumblr media
as a bisexual, novels about straight widows turning lesbian really bother me sometimes. this was one of the ones that really bothered me. it's kind of insane how little bisexual fiction there is compared to the strongly represented pan and poly communities. this was 2008 though so pansexuality wasn't really as mainstream, i don't remember hearing much about it until i went to college in western massachusetts in 2013.
i had to stop reading this book bc it hit me with the following:
Tumblr media
these are both cis women. does she have an infection??????? is she okay???? the book is not going to get better from here. books rarely start out bad and then improve. i have only a limited amount of time here on god's green earth and i want to read the thirteenth volume of witch hat atelier instead. gentle reader, i hope you understand.
-
watching
again if i could log individual children's tv show episodes i would be winning letterboxd. i half-watched a lot of david attenborough docs in the background and fell asleep on a couch to his soothing voice. there are some fucked up little guys on this planet.
youtube
-
playing
good fucking riddance, even though this is basically a slap on the wrist. the multiple-step in-game currency exchanges in order to get the main in-game currency for pulling for characters is one of the more underhanded gacha systems. gambling is an ancient human activity, it is not instantly harmful or instantly addictive, and there will never be a good way to legislate it out of existence, but i do think some more predatory practices (like this one!) should be legislated.
nothing to report about actually playing genshin this week. a big yearly event approacheth, however. excited to bring you news of the new four-star character, a basket weaver
Tumblr media
-
making
banana bread embarrassment. i hate my kitchen so fucking much. my fridge and oven both need to be replaced but will my landlord do that???? no. this oven is from 2007 and does not hold a consistent temp, which is fine if im roasting chicken thighs and it randomly spikes the temp and doesn't heat in one quadrant, but it makes it Very Difficult to bake. i think this was a combo of an inconsistent inner temp and forming a slightly burnt crust that did not want to pull out of the perhaps undergreased pans. fuck an aldi nonstick spray i guess. i SLATHERED that thing and it still had to be persuaded out of the pan.
i consistently forget that martha stewart consistently produces baked goods that are just a touch oilier than i like. you could lose a good two tablespoons of butter in this and not notice it much, i think. a very wet recipe. added in one orange's worth of zest bc i like it.

Fifi's Duck Cafe [Updates]
The Community comes together to do good!
Leftovers at the duck cafe are usually collected by Jing Yuan to distribute among veterans in his neighborhood who are struggling to reintegrate into society, and other unfortunate folks in dire situations and more dangerous areas! (Credits to Em for the veterans idea! And for helping me flesh out the whole community service idea with Wrio and co!)
Mydei has a massive eatery, he does the same with his leftovers. He'd come to return one of my ducks that had waddled off the premises and discovered Jing Yuan taking home the leftovers. Upon asking what I was doing, decided to do the same.
We have a new member of the community, he's rather intimidating looking, but I enjoy talking to him about tea...though he knows more about brewing it than I do! I know more about medicinal effects though! >:D
For anyone wondering, yes it is in fact Wriothesley! He runs the rest and recharge (rehabilitation) center closer to the forest. He has a lot of troubled youths/young adults/adults in need of help under his care, so he also gets leftovers from the cafe.
Most importantly: one of the ducks has decided he is its personal seat, another has opted to nip at his fingers. Another one likes to rest on his shoulder. It's cute.
Community days:
Mydei deliberately makes extra food so he can have "leftovers" so his eatery and my cafe are teaming up with Wriothesley's R&R center to make a bunch of meals and distribute them. All blorbos and moots are welcome (Jing Yuan , Champion Leon, and Hinata are also absolutely there - I feel like Blade also makes it out for this, would Dennis come by?)
Oh and thanks to Mydei, I have been introduced to Phainon. Given the museum Em works at is right next door, I ran to make a "delivery" of both herbal and verbal tea. (bless that tweet for the herbal or verbal thing)
As for the ducks and Phainon: one of them has decided to perch itself on his head, while he pats the other in his lap, and another one also nips at his fingers.
(My blorbos have started joining in)

The irony of making that post about stochastic terrorism and how the far Left and Right are both using it is that I had/have representatives of both political extremes coming at me in comments and my inbox. It's not exactly horseshoe theory because one was trying to get me to say that anyone who uses the phrase "eat the rich" is committing stochastic, which is not the case. It was very clear they were sealioning for an answer they wanted and when they didn't get it they did the usual thing and became accusatory and went on the offensive.
The others, because there have been multiple, are doing exactly what I've laid out previously that pro-Hamas antisemites do, which is defend support of terrorist groups as if it's a First Amendment right. Which is only a defense to a certain point. Once you fall under the material support section of the law (e.g. distributing materials produced and approved of by the terrorist organization, actively spreading their rhetoric in conjunction and coordination with them, and inciting and promoting violence according to said rhetoric) then your speech and actions are no longer protected.
So many people want to either believe that they know more about First Amendments rights than they actually do or purposefully misinterpret what stochastic terrorism means so they can label any and all criticism against their blorbo. In the former situation we have laws regarding hate speech and terrorism that address said actions and rhetoric (US 18, 2339A and 2339B for the latter). In the other situation it’s a classic defensive argument that rejects nuance for an absolutist view that rejects any self reflection.
I can work with the former as most people are actually ignorant as to what extent FA covers, but the latter is just arguing from a place of ignorance and digging your heels in like a stubborn child.
