Former AEW Star Jake Hager Accuses Tony Khan Of Being 'Communist'

Presidential elections are usually a stressful time for all involved, regardless of what side one falls on, and the 2024 Presidential Election appears to have been no different. That's especially the case for former WWE, Bellator, and AEW star Jake Hager, a Donald Trump supporter who spent Tuesday evening hurling accusations against his former boss, AEW owner Tony Khan, a Kamala Harris supporter.

At first, Hager was seen tweeting derogatory remarks towards women and abortion rights. That changed at around 11 p.m. when a fan responded to a Hager tweet by tagging Khan and Bryan Danielson to "check your dumbass drunk boy," falsely believing Hager was still employed by AEW. It was then Hager shot back.

Hager didn't stop there, however. Ten minutes after this exchange, Hager fired off another tweet.

All of Hager's tweets from the evening have since been deleted. Khan appears to have not responded to Hager's statements, with his most recent tweet promoting AEW's upcoming "Dynamite" episode from Manchester, New Hampshire. Following Hager's tirade, independent promotion Blitzkrieg Pro! removed Hager from their upcoming show on December 14, citing his behavior on social media.

Hager then became the subject of ridicule from everyone after he called his former boss, the billionaire Tony Khan, a communist and birthed a lot of memes.

While not a "Day 1" member of the AEW roster, Hager debuted in the promotion not long after, appearing at the first-ever episode of "Dynamite" to align with Chris Jericho, Santana, Ortiz, and Sammy Guevara, forming the Inner Circle stable. Hager would largely remain by Jericho's side throughout his AEW tenure, including becoming a member of the Jericho Appreciation Society, before abandoning Jericho in mid-2023. His contract with AEW expired in May 2024.

Blitzkrieg & Super Dragon vs. American Wild Child & Dragon Yakuza, WCW Thunder (dark match), July 16, 1998

In this year's Wrestling Observer Newsletter Hall of Fame ballot, the Young Bucks, Kevin Owens nee Steen, and Sami Zayn fka El Generico are up for induction. My focus as an independent wrestling fan in the 2000s was on Ring of Honor, Chikara Pro, and occasionally on Jersey All Pro Wrestling, IWA-MS, and Combat Zone Wrestling. Nonetheless, Pro Wrestling Guerrilla was an impossible to ignore presence partly because it was where the Bucks, Steen, and Generico were plying their craft while they tried to break out to other territories. Even when the Bucks and Steen made their way to Dragon Gate and Generico to DDT, PWG was still their American home base.

Thus, any examination of their careers would involve an examination of their matches in Pro Wrestling Guerrilla. And some of the light emanating from the Bucks, Steen, and Generico would touch on the six founders of PWG: Disco Machine, Excalibur, Scott Lost, Joey Ryan, Top Gun Talwar, and Super Dragon.

So, it makes sense (at least by the somewhat tortured logic laid out above) to revisit Super Dragon's fifth earliest match on Cagematch and his only match for a nationally televised company (even if the match itself was a dark match). It's also famously the match that earned Super Dragon's tag team partner, Blitzkrieg, a contract with World Championship Wrestling in 1998. It's a basic five minute match where the eighteen years old Super Dragon and Blitzkrieg hit impressive stereo dives on American Wild Child and Dragon Yakuza, leading to Super Dragon showing off his offense on then frequent opponent American Wild Child, transitioning to American Wild Child and Dragon Yakuza working Super Dragon over to build to the hot tag to Blitzkrieg, who then bounces around the ring and off of Dragon Yakuza with a fun monkey flip and off of both opponents with dropkicks. Super Dragon hits an impressive moonsault off of the top turnbuckle to Dragon Yakuza on the floor that got the crowd to its feet. Blitzkrieg hits an impressive pair of dives on American Wild Child to win the match, but he's not the focus for me here.

To me, Super Dragon is the bulkier power wrestler who had dangerous-looking weapons in his arsenal, like the Barry White Driver and the curb stomp, not a wiry high flyer. So, this was an impressive show of what young Super Dragon could do. And it also begs the question of what professional wrestling in the United States would look like if WCW had signed Super Dragon along with Blitzkrieg in 1998. Would Super Dragon have been benched, or would he have flamed out like Blitzkrieg? Without bouncing around West Coast indies for years, would Super Dragon have met the other PWG founders and been motivated to create the company so he would have a place to pursue his dreams? Would the Bucks, Steen, and Generico have found a foothold in the United States without PWG? Steen and Generico were working in CZW during its peak, and they could probably have still landed in ROH without PWG. Would wrestling in NWA, HRW, and AWS been enough to give the Bucks exposure to get noticed by Dragon Gate?

Had WCW thrown one more contract out at a time when their roster was an overinflated balloon, this dark match, shorter than five minutes, could have had reverberations that impact professional wrestling in the United States for decades to come.

Bigger points: German "Strategy"

Germany escalated from diplomatic crisis to war with Poland/UK/France, and to war with the Soviet Union, and then America, out of a series of perceived closing windows of opportunity. First one was seeing UK/French production overtaking them in rates and catching up on stocks. In 1940 the US fully commits to aiding Britain, creating sense of "the bombers are coming eventually" and need to gain immediate advantage by conquering the Soviet Union.

Bizarrely, German production was focused on the Luftwaffe in preparation for fighting US/UK air war as Germany was getting ready for Barbarossa!

Declaration of war on US pitched as confirming alliance with Japan, but still feels stupid. Germany could just stay quiet and force US to either engineer entry to European conflict another way or stay out. Still seems less stupid, considering this is at a time when Barbarossa is coming apart.

But overall, a sound if massively risky plan assuming you accept the insane basic assumptions. Hitler's strategic vision often gets assumed to be terrible out of disgust for the consequences of his actions and their failure.

I really do wonder what the vibe was among German economic elite from 1942 onwards, it's obvious the war is not winnable, that you're very fucked, and that everyone is coming to kill you.

Anyways, good book and worth reading/listening to. Tooze could've slimmed down on the pre-war stuff. I find him vaguely irritating with how he brings up irrelevant things just to show how smart he is but that's probably just envy.

Ultimately, as historians and other experts on fascism and authoritarianism have pointed out, a coup where the participants are not severely punished is just practice for the next attempt. Donald Trump’s second attempt to become “president” has proven their warning correct. The planning, recruitment, and organizing to achieve a blitzkrieg on American democracy from within is taking place right now. With the appointment of JD Vance as his vice-presidential nominee, Trump has cemented his connection to the most extreme antidemocratic elements in the neofascist movement.

So what is the likelihood that Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans and their forces will succeed in their attempts to end American democracy if he and they take power in 2025?

The War in Gaza: Terrorism or Resistance?

Few would disagree that there are No Winners in the newly erupted 'War' between Israel & Hamas. Mainstream Media has already begun to make excuses for the expected carnage that Benjamin Netanyahu will rain on Gaza. The Israeli Prime Minister singles out Hamas for destruction, but is pretty general about his Military Targets; situated among an urban population of over 2 Million Palestinians. What's scary, is how easily News Correspondents & Political Contributors downplay Israeli 'revenge' as Collateral Damage.

58% of Palestinians support Hamas, but Mainstream Media collectively behaves like the Citizens of Gaza are ALL connected to Hamas. The same way that All Black Males are gang affiliated... I guess that's their punishment for voting Hamas into Political Power. The irony lies in the fact that Israel brought Hamas into existence, as a counter balance to Yasser Arafat & The PLO. The Media is already calling Hamas' Attack 'Israel's 9/11'- I find that classification curious. That 2001 Event looks more & more like a smokescreen for a larger Agenda. Despite the thousands of Americans killed, the Legacy of 9/11 are: The Iraqi War & The Patriot Act. There are correlations to point out between the 2 Events.

Benjamin Netanyahu's current political position resembles Rudy Giuliani's position, pre- 9/11. Rudy faced Police Brutality & Corruption in his Administration, while Bibi faces Fraud, Breach of Trust, & accepting Bribes on @ least 3 different occasions. The Media Narrative has been Israeli Centered. Big Bad Hamas caught Israel off guard, & wreaked as much havoc as they could. Israel is known for their Security & Intelligence, so it's more than curious how Hamas could execute such a large scale Operation. Over 1,000 Hamas Soldiers stormed breached sections of Israel's Security Fence, along w/ other Soldiers attacking by Air & by Sea. Over 2,200 Military Grade Rockets were launched w/i the City of Tel Aviv. Nothing like this has ever happened in Israel's History. The Police & Military were both caught unaware... How?

Benjamin Netanyahu rose to power on the promise that he could protect Israel better than anyone that preceded him. The fact that Mossad, Shin Bet, & Unit 8200 all failed to anticipate such an attack is mindboggling. When we consider the fact that Netanyahu did not anticipate an attack on, or around the 50th Anniversary of the Yom Kippur War (back in 1973), it's not hard to consider conspiracy theories. Some call it silly to think that Bibi Netanyahu would allow Hamas to breach Israeli territory & kill hundreds, but the alternative is to think that 3 Intelligence Agencies failed to gather Intel on a coordinated attack that took up to 2 Years to plan.

Benjamin Netanyahu's Legacy as Israeli Leader, is a continuous oppression of the Palestinian population. Under his leadership, Israel openly practices a System of Apartheid. Many refer to Gaza as an 'Open Air Prison', while Others call it a 'Concentration Camp'. Despite The 1993 Oslo Accords that laid out the foundation for a 2 State solution, Netanyahu still allows the development of Illegal Settlements in Gaza. It has become so rampant, that Pro- Israel Supporters are calling for the compete removal of All Palestinians from the Gaza Strip. Israel's Minister of Defense, Yoav Gallant referred to Hamas as 'Human Animals' that will be dealt w/ in a similar manner... Where is the compromise?

It's crazy to say, but Israel is planning a full blitzkrieg on The Gaza Strip. 300,000 Israeli Soldiers have been called to the Gaza Border, following days of incessant bombing on an urban population of over 2 million people. Over 300,000 people have already been displaced. Netanyahu says he issued warnings for Gaza Residents to leave, but where are they going? Access to Israel & Egypt has been completely cut off. Israeli Officials brag how Food, Water, Fuel, & Electricity supplies to Gaza have been shut off. Some News Correspondents mention Israel's clear violation of Human Rights & The Geneva Convention, but most News Reports focus on the Israeli perspective.

Volodomyr Zelenskyy is blaming Vladimir Putin for the War in Gaza; America's focus on Israel means less focus on Ukraine. The Pentagon has a limited surplus of weapons & ammunition. Zelenskyy understands Ukraine's place in the pecking order, so he's probably uneasy. The Geopolitics behind this Event are interesting. GOP Presidential Hopefuls, Sen. Lindsey Graham & Former Ambassador/ Governor Nikki Haley have blamed Iran for financing Hamas (through Hezbollah), & both called for an American attack on Iran. History shows that Israel supported Iran 40Yrs ago. They supplied the Ayatollah Khomeini w/ weapons in his War w/ Iraq. When Iran financed Hezbollah in 1983, leading to attacks on Israeli Occupations & U.S. Marines barracks (in Lebanon), Israel continued to supply Iran.

The U.S. has a Memorandum Of Understanding w/ Israel that promises $3.8B in Annual Military Aid. On top of this, Joe Biden has pledged full support to Israel, & has dispatched the Aircraft Carrier U.S.S. Gerald Ford w/ a Battleship compliment. Nearly 60Yrs ago, Yasser Arafat formed The Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) to fight for the Palestinian Right of Expression on their Own land.

30Yrs ago, Yasser Arafat & Yitzhak Rabin agreed on a 2 State solution, but Israeli Leaders following Rabin have failed to go any further w/ the Oslo Accords. The political rise of Hamas, & their refusal to recognize The State of Israel has been blamed for the breakdown of negotiations. Meanwhile, Palestinians, Black Jews, Hebrew Israelites, & Muslims have all experienced an increase in Ethnic Bias/ Discrimination. Anyone that insinuates Ethnic Bias or Racism in Israel is either treated like a leper, or silenced; but Palestinians have been dealing w/ this Ethnic Bias for nearly 130Yrs.

Israel's problem w/ Gaza, is numbers. While the Israeli population is moderately young, the Palestinian population of Gaza has a Median Age of 19Yrs; half the population is under 18Yrs. This may explain Israel's aggressive stance towards Palestinians. Israel's 'gestapo tactics' run the risk of radicalizing a new generation of Palestinians. Not the best move to make, if Hamas is getting more sophisticated w/ their planning & methods of attack. Whenever Israel goes on the offensive, I always have to look @ their move in respect to 'Greater Israel'. This is Israel's vision for expansion. The Maps that I saw show Israel expanding into Lebanon, Jordan, Syria, & Iraq... I can't help thinking about The Book of Revelations & that 'Battle on the Hill of Megiddo'.

From an Indigenous Black American perspective, Gaza is Must See TV! Israeli UN Ambassador, Gilad Erdan made a comment a few years ago, that Black American Men were the greatest threat to Israel(???) American Police Departments, large & small are invited to visit Israel (All expenses paid), to learn the tactics they use on Palestinians. The Israelis learned from American Police tactics on Black Americans, so it appears that they are sharing Tools of Oppression. By the same token, as Malcolm X vocally supported the Palestinian Right Of Expression; Palestinians return the gesture, by teaching Black American Protestors how to handle tear gas & other 'Urban' Police tactics.

The United States & Israel are tethered to each other. European Jews use Hollywood to present specific images & narratives globally. Among the images are: 'America', The Great Society & 'Israel', The Holy Land. Both nations are White Supremacist Republics, so the goals are: Marginalization of the Indigenous People & Appropriation of the natural resources. Israel is practicing the American Model of 'Jim Crow' Anti- Black Racism, much like the Nazis & South Afrikan Boers practiced. America appears to be copying Israel's Urban Assault Tactics. I wouldn't be surprised if the Cop City Development outside of Atlanta, Ga. is the result of those Police junkets to Israel.

The Civil Rights & Black Power Movements inspired Black & Brown People globally. Our current fight against Police Violence & for (lineage based) Reparations is already having a similar effect. That being said, Palestinians live in an environment that can change forever- in a heartbeat. I don't think that they need to draw inspiration from Us, but it's clear that We are in solidarity w/ each other. Mainstream Media is mourning the dead babies in Southern Israel & uttering curses @ Hamas, but they have been silent for years about the dead babies in Gaza. The dank, claustrophobic basement of a derelict building in east London was the setting for an unusual exhibition last week. Organized by the 7/10 Human Chain Project, a grassroots group formed in the wake of Hamas’s October 7 blitzkrieg on Israel, the installation, titled “Voice from the Tunnels,” sought to bring to life the experience of Israeli hostages held underground in Gaza for more than 100 days.

The exhibition was open for five days to members of Parliament, celebrities, leaders of faiths and communities, senior CEOs of large corporations, journalists, social media influencers, and anyone else with a platform to highlight the plight of the remaining captives. The disturbing displays recreate the settings of the Hamas tunnels under Gaza, estimated to be at least 350 miles long — far exceeding the length of the London Underground railway system at 250 miles.

“It’s based on IDF evidence, it’s based on footage that was found, it’s based on interviewing the Hostages and Missing Families Forum,” says exhibit co-creator Orit Eyal-Fibeesh. “It’s really an attempt to portray, as accurately as we possibly can, some of those stories.”

The 7/10 Human Chain Project came from a nucleus of people who began putting up posters of hostages to publicize the October 7 kidnappings. The small group watched pro-Hamas activists tear down their posters and became more determined.

The group began holding demonstrations outside Parliament Square, Downing Street, and the London offices of the Red Cross and United Nations Women. It took the name 7/10 Human Chain Project after gathering enough people to form a human chain at one protest.

The group would remind passersby that hostage Emily Hand had turned nine years old in Hamas captivity. Little Emily has since been released, but her father, Thomas, has said in interviews that his daughter still cries uncontrollably, does not wish to be comforted by anyone, and only speaks in a low whisper. Emily, like the other children and women already released, left the tunnels traumatized, hungry, and alone.

Utter Overwhelm

On January 14, marking the hostages’ 100 days in captivity, the 7/10 Human Chain Project organized a rally in support of Israel that drew more than 25,000 people to London’s Trafalgar Square. The next day, the group opened the “Voice from the Tunnels” exhibition, an effort for which planning had been underway for many weeks.

The project came about after one of the organizers, who identifies himself only as David, decided to create a display of Hamas atrocities. David has a business that supplies mannequins to stores and theatres, and saw an opportunity to put his trade to use to help the hostages.

The display he developed, using mannequins that are human-like but essentially faceless, created a haunting impression that David wanted to capture. By that time, some of the hostages had been released, and horrific stories began to emerge.

The organizers spoke to doctors who had treated released hostages, as well as their family members, and also made use of video footage discovered in the tunnels that was released by the IDF. Everything in the group’s reconstruction of the Gaza tunnels was then verified and cross-checked with the Hostages and Missing Families Forum.

The exhibit, made accessible last week to members of the media, took the form of a tour that begins in a makeshift hospital environment. Beds are lined up in a large ward at ground-floor level, and at first glance resemble the setting in any other hospital. But as the tour makes clear, many of Hamas’s tunnels have been discovered underneath hospitals, schools, kindergartens, mosques, and even United Nations buildings. It is a reminder of the security cam footage discovered by the IDF that showed Hamas terrorists bringing hostages to a Gaza hospital on October 7.

As the tour heads below ground, project co-creator Orit Eyal-Fibeesh, serving in the role of tour guide (she is also a former IDF officer), informs guests that the actual Gaza tunnels are some 50 to 60 meters (170 to 200 feet) underground, running to five or six levels. The complex could only have been constructed with a mind-boggling quantity of concrete — not to mention engineering expertise.

The gut-wrenching part of the tour starts in earnest when it reaches a display of prone mannequins covered in a bloody white sheet, meant to recreate what the IDF discovered upon entering one of the tunnels in their quest for hostages. Apart from one female soldier, the rest of the hostages discovered on that day had been murdered.

The tour moves on to an introductory room, where TV screens display various media loops covering the unfolding events of October 7, followed by news coverage in subsequent days and weeks.

Little Kfir Bibas, kidnapped when he was just under nine months old (his birthday was on January 18), is mentioned in the coverage, along with his four-year-old brother Ariel. The oldest person still in captivity is 85.

At this point, two women appear next to Orit. They seem to have joined the tour, but Orit explains that they have just watched a 43-minute compilation of footage from Hamas body cameras retrieved by the IDF, along with video from kibbutz and police security cameras and that taken by soldiers.

The two women are both in total shock, so overwhelmed that they cannot speak, and they begin to cry. Orit starts sobbing herself, as she is familiar with the film. The two women cannot continue and need to leave.

Careful Preparations

Throughout the tour in the cold, damp, filthy tunnels, screams of “Allahu Akbar” repeat on a recorded loop taken from October 7. There are also recordings of the sound of bombing in the distance, believed to be from IDF bombs and shells.

Freed Israeli hostages have told doctors and family members that the shouts of “Allahu Akbar,” which echoed in the tunnels when terrorists came in pumped up with adrenalin, will not leave their heads. Hostages being held underground did not know if it was night or day. Their captors constantly told them, “No one is looking for you and no one knows you are here.”

On the tour, the screams of “Allahu Akbar” and the booms of nearby IDF bombing only last about 45 minutes — leaving it to tour participants to imagine what it would be like to be trapped there for more than 115 days with little or no food, no medication, no room to move, no showers, limited access to toilets, and terrorists brandishing automatic weapons.

Orit leads the tour into another tunnel, the floors of which are strewn with children’s pajamas, shoes, and clothes, baby bottles, diapers, and pacifiers. The IDF discovered such tunnels, proving that Hamas was preparing for this “operation” for a long time.

The IDF also determined that Hamas assembled detailed records of who was living in each house, their ages, nationalities, and more. The next room recreates a scene in which Hamas commanders, with their detailed paperwork, are giving instructions to the terrorists already in the kibbutzim as to who lives where.

The next room recreates Hamas’s crude operating theatre, where the hostages Maya and her brother Itai are highlighted. Maya was shot in the foot while she was taken hostage and has described how she was forced to walk on the wound more than two miles in the tunnels. Her brother Itai was also shot.

None of the Arab doctors wanted to operate on Jews, so a veterinarian was brought in to perform the complicated operation on Maya. In what has been well documented, Maya’s foot was sown up the wrong way, while Itai was operated on without any anesthetic.

Next is the Hamas command center, where operatives prepare to fire more rockets into Israel. There is a Koran and a prayer mat. In another room, a young boy is depicted sitting on the ground in front of a TV screen. This is Eitan Yahalomi, aged 12, who was kidnapped with his mother and sister on two separate motorbikes.

The mother and sister managed to escape when one of the bikes hit a tank. Eitan was on his own, and once he was in Gaza, he was made to watch some of the footage of Hamas’s barbaric atrocities. If Eitan started to cry, they threatened him with pain and death. He spoke fluent Arabic when he was released from Gaza after 50 days.

The stories of the elderly hostages are just as horrific. Emma was released more than two months ago, but remains in the hospital. She was taking medication to manage a health problem before being taken hostage. Since being released, Emma’s organs have failed because of the conditions in which she was held.

Many of the tunnels did not have high ceilings and the elderly had to walk crouched over for miles in the damp, dark, and wet tunnels. The older people were forced to sleep on the floor. They had to wait 12 hours before using the toilet.

Forced into Hiding

Noam Sagi, a son of a 74-year-old hostage from Kibbutz Nir Oz who was released, visited the London tunnels last week and attested that it was an accurate depiction. His mother turned 75 in captivity. She was one of the lucky ones; she was sold by Hamas to Islamic Jihad and then taken above ground and held in a family home.

Ada, another hostage, was also sold to Islamic Jihad and held above ground. Before October 7, she lived on the border and spoke fluent Arabic, as she was an Arabic teacher, and she believed in peace with her neighbors. She refuses to speak to the media today, but a family member says she will eventually write about her captivity.

Orit Eyal-Fibeesh says many of the hostages suffered from chemical burns because they were not allowed to shower even once, the entire time. Doctors discovered they were drugged, probably with Ketamine, which is used to induce a state of sedation and immobility.

The exhibition is a collection of images that cannot be unseen. The fact that the event was essentially forced into hiding — open only to politicians and journalists at a secret location in London — testifies loud and clear about the violent anti-Semitism that has taken hold in the UK.

As Hamas’s supporters dominate the streets of central London in weekly marches, any reminder of Jewish humanitarian suffering in Hamas’s torture tunnels has essentially been driven underground.

AP Reports Syrian Rebels Have Entered Damascus- Assad has fled!

A few thoughts:

It is impossible to know what the long-term repercussions of this will be, yet, and whether what ultimately emerges on the other side will be better or worse than the Assad regime. Time will tell.

That said, in the short-term, this is a GIGANTIC kick in the rubles to Putin. He poured a great deal of effort into propping up his Syrian proxies, seemingly successfully intimidating Obama out of taking a stronger stance against Assad after the chemical weapons "red line" was crossed. Syria also is (was?) the home of Russia's only Mediterranean naval base IIRC. I would go so far as to guess that this may be the worst loss Putin has ever taken, outside of his failure to blitzkrieg Ukraine.

While not necessarily validating every action taken in that war, this outcome would seem to validate Israel's decision to strike Hezbollah. Hezbollah were major allies of Assad, and the damage they took from the IDF in recent months likely helped make the swift fall of the Assad regime possible. The rebels will not be friends of Israel either, but nonetheless, and whether it was anticipated or not, the IDF has arguably, indirectly, done what the entire world failed to for the better part of two decades: toppled a key Russian proxy state and rid the Middle East of Assad.

Watch how quickly the "pro-Palestine" Westerners' sympathies for Islamist rebels vanishes in this case, because, see above. They're Tankies, they get a lot of their narratives from Moscow, and their darling Hezbollah was close to Assad. If they aren't already painting the fall of the Butcher of Damascus as an evil US/Jewish "Zionist" conspiracy, they will.

"How did the Canadian government see the war after the first, German conquests in  Western Europe? On April 30, 1940, O.D. Skelton wrote a document called The Present Outlook. Skelton was [Prime Minister Mackenzie] King’s under-secretary of Foreign Affairs, thus King’s deputy  minister, his most trusted advisor, one of the leading public servants in Ottawa. Skelton’s document was remarkable for its lack of foresight. For example, it suggested that Japan represented no danger to the allies. It also linked as one force the two, bitter enemies, communism and fascism, as rival forms of totalitarianism, which now united. Skelton  described the horrifying possibility of a victory of the associated Germans, Italians, and  Soviets as if Canada were in an undeclared war with the Soviet Union, now allied with the Nazis. Writing about U.S. neutrality, Skelton wrote that, in the recent past, probable victory for England and France against Germany meant that the American people rightly saw no need to fight against totalitarianism. With the possibility of a victory of a German-Italian-Russian coalition, American public opinion would now change. All this nonsense from one of the most powerful men in Ottawa, a man who had the ear and respect of King about Canada’s war policy. In actual fact, Skelton probably believed the government’s own propaganda about the nature of the war as being a war upon totalitarianism and, therefore, an undeclared war against the U.S.S.R. The nature of anti-Soviet manipulations in Europe during the phoney war was clarified eventually when Swedish diplomatic archives revealed that a week before the German blitzkrieg was launched upon the French, the French government and military had been preparing to  send 50,000 troops to wage war against the U.S.S.R. in Finland, rather than preparing to  defend France against Germany.

After France and the Low Countries fell to the Germans in the Spring of 1940, the character of the war changed for Canada. A general panic among the public ensued. Canada was now the most important ally of the British, isolated and beleaguered in Europe. Canadians rushed to volunteer for the military. The King government insisted upon the voluntary aspect of Canada’s contribution in military manpower. In October, 1939, Duplessis had sought re-election in Quebec by using the threat of conscription, against which Duplessis was to be the bulwark. Federal Liberals, led by Justice minister Ernest Lapointe, promised there would be no conscription, and pledged their seats in Quebec towards this commitment. Duplessis was defeated when Quebeckers voted for the provincial Liberals, led by Adélard Godbout.

What then was to be Canada’s contribution to the defence of Britain? King prepared Canada for a war of limited liability in terms of its contribution to the war effort. The priorities were to be economic aid, which would help Canadian capitalists make profits, re-launch the economy, and create jobs; national unity, especially the unity of King’s Liberal Party, powerful in Quebec; and defending Canada’s borders and infrastructure but even more importantly, Canada’s internal social order. In the immediate flush of pro-British enthusiasm after the start of proceedings, King had sent an army division of 20,000 troops to Britain. He soon regretted this decision when negotiations were held between Britain and Canada to train aviators in Canada as part of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. During the acrimonious negotiations with Britain, King fought and scrapped about the costs of the plan, $600 million per year, of which  Canada was to assume $350 million, in order to train 20,000 airmen per year for use by Britain, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. King insisted that Canada’s contribution to the plan would be its most effective contribution to the war effort. Emphasis on the plan also permitted King to envisage a reduced loss of military lives, which might also ease pressure for conscription.

Many English-Canadians felt that King’s proposed contribution to the war was too calculated, too timid. They wanted Canada to do more than help Britain financially, guard borders and infrastructure, and train aviators. They wanted Canadians to fight alongside Britain, this in spite of the Phoney War early in WWII that precluded immediate, actual combat. In Ontario, the provincial Liberal government of Mitchell Hepburn said so in a resolution, adopted on January 18, 1940, which criticized King’s lack of vigorous execution of the war. King used this occasion to call elections, which were coming due as King was now in the fifth year of government. King manoeuvred the leader of the Tories, Robert Manion, into approving the no-conscription pledge to Quebeckers. On March 26, King won an overwhelming majority, 181 seats out of 245 in the House of Commons. The Liberals were now free to conduct a war of limited liability according to their priorities. King’s priorities for this war of limited liability illuminate the real reason why Canada went to war. Writes Jack Granatstein: “Canada went to war in September, 1939 because Britain had gone to war, and for no other reason. It was not a war for Poland; it was not a war against anti-semitism; it was not even a war against Naziism,” even though the horrible atrocity of the Nazi genocides against Jews, Gypsies, Slavs, and  political opponents did provide post facto moral justification for World War II and  Canada’s participation therein."

This sadly is how wars goes.

No one who's doing the fighting is 100% good and righteous. The armed forces of my own country (Great Britain) were 100% right in fighting against Hitler. (And I thank them for doing so.)

But will I pretend that everything they did whilst fighting was pure and moral? Absolutely not. I know that's not true. That includes the innocent German and Austrian civilians who died during the allied bombing raids. Just as much to be mourned as all the British lives lost to Goering's Blitzkrieg'.

If heinous things like this have gone on, then most definitely it needs to be talked about. Just as it's right to make sure that people know how many Palestinian civilians have died. Even if they were not the IDF's intended targets, they died just the same.

But. It still doesn't mean that what happened on Oct 7th can be ignored. It still doesn't mean that we can pretend that vicious anti Jewish sentiments are not being heard from too many Pro Palestinian voices. (Up to and including calls for death to Jews, for crying out loud!)

I want the Palestinian People to be able to live safely and securely, in a place to call their own.

But I equally want Jews to have their one and only safe and secure Jewish land, somewhere accepted as The Land of Their People.
