Dark Grey Matter: Neurodivergence and the Goth Experience

Alternative subcultures have existed for nearly as long as human society. Modern examples include the flappers of the 1920s, the beatniks of the 1950s, and the hippies of the 1960s. These alternative subcultures have been defined by music, literature, fashion, and film. For those outside of these subcultures, it may be unclear what would make one wish to exist in a group that is not part of the norm. While there are many factors for each individual, it is clear that neurodivergence plays at least part of a role for many people. For the case study, I will be using the goth scene, being a member myself and because it is both newer and longer lasting than some of the others, being what to subcultures as water is to liquids, if you may. There have already been analyses of specific post-punk musicians and their neurodivergent diagnoses - Gary Numan and David Byrne being autistic, Danny Elfman with his ADHD/OCD combo, and Blixa Bargeld being synesthesic, not to mention speculation about countless others. This is not one of those. The musicians are important, but this is more about the members of the subculture as a whole, whether they produce music or not. This is also not to say that every goth or person in any given alternative subculture is neurodivergent or that every neurodivergent person is involved in an alternative subculture, just an observation on the overlap between the two. 
To start us off, let us focus on what is typically seen as central to the goth subculture: the music. There are currently a myriad of subgenres of goth music: darkwave, deathrock, gothic rock, and ethereal wave, among others. It is sometimes difficult to define goth music as a whole, especially with bands that bleed into non-goth specific post-punk genres, such as shoegaze or industrial and with different terminology being more popular in different regions and eras. A rough definition for all of these subgenres would be a variety of alternative rock music with origins in punk (though some have influence that includes glam rock, synthpop, and even Caribbean-British dub reggae) that typically values minor chords, a heavy bassline that dictates the melody, slower rhythms, mezzo vocals, and artful, often dark lyrics. Why would this genre appeal to neurodivergent people specifically? The initial appeal is the sound. A common comorbidity with autism, ADHD, and other variations of neurodivergence is Auditory Processing Disorder or other differences in sound processing. Those thusly impacted may respond to verbal cues more slowly, be irritated by certain sounds more easily than others, and mishear words more frequently. There are numerous hypotheses to address differences in musical taste and likely multiple contributing factors and differences in audio processing may be one of those factors. While not every instance of APD is exactly the same, it is easy to see how a music genre that focuses on deeper pitches, more pronounced vocal styles, and slower rhythms would aurally appeal to individuals who experience auditory processing differences. 
Aside from the way that the music sounds, there is also great appeal in the lyrical content. Certainly, goth bands touch on a variety of topics, from the historical monologues on the World Wars by Joy Division and the Pagan rites of Inkubus Sukkubus to the scathing diatribes of 1980s conservative politics by Sisters of Mercy and the sexual escapades explored by London After Midnight, just to name a few. Across the diverse set of subjects that these bands cover, there is a consistent return to one recurring theme: being an outsider observing an imperfect world. The experience of feeling like an outsider is certainly one that many neurodivergent individuals can relate to. Many neurodivergent individuals are made to feel like outsiders from a young age, often bullied by their peers for their communication styles and told by family members to behave differently, traits they have difficulty controlling. With differences in communication and internalizing the world, it is difficult to make sense of supposed social rules and forge connections. When one has similar requirements to exist happily as others but difficulty obtaining them due to reasons outside of one’s control, it is easy to recognize the world as a flawed place full of inequality and rewards for shallow traits. There is hope for those whose auditory processing differences do not manifest in alternative music, at least not exclusively. Fortunately for youth of today who still feel like outsiders, be it due to neurodivergence or anything else, but still have more mainstream aural preferences, modern pop artists are less afraid of embracing oddity and touching on feelings of isolation. Some may even serve as bridges for those with a taste for multiple genres as some pop artists have expressed an appreciation for goth artists. One now-former member of One Direction previously cited Joy Division’s Unknown Pleasures as a primary music inspiration, Dua Lipa did a photoshoot that made an homage to Siouxsie Sioux, and Billie Eilish has been seen performing in an Alien Sex Fiend shirt.
Of tertiary importance to the scene compared to music but more obvious to those not involved in the scene is fashion and makeup. The way that neurodivergent people often do not internalize social norms, current trends are often similarly not internalized, so dressing according to any sort of trend is not even considered. That being said, clothes are not necessarily chosen at random either. Something of utmost importance to many neurodivergent individuals when choosing clothes, as with many of their neurotypical counterparts, is comfort. This sometimes manifests in more obvious physical ways, such as removing tags or avoiding certain fabrics. It is easy to see how a scene that values DIY aesthetics would appeal to those with sensory differences; no one can fault one for cutting off a tag when the entire outfit is cut up and put back together with safety pins. However, there are also ways to achieve psychological comfort. Case in point, Blixa Bargeld, founding member of German industrial band Einstürzende Neubauten and arguably founder of the industrial music genre as well as former guitarist of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, has attributed his preference for wearing all black to to his synesthesia and finding other colors to be too overwhelming. Many black-wearers have made similar statements, with or without a diagnosis of synesthesia or something similar. Neurodivergent people also often find comfort in wearing clothing related to one’s special interest, so band shirts are a common staple, along with outfits that homage musicians, movie characters, or others they admire. There is also the issue of expression. Neurotypical people often have difficulty reading the emotions of their neurodivergent peers due to differences in emotional expression. Clothing and makeup, in addition to highlighting one’s general interests, can also help in making emotional expression more obvious to others. Of later importance, many neurodivergent individuals find that dressing in a way that labels them as a person with certain interests, this can help them attract others of similar interests. Given that many neurodivergent people have difficulty making friends and initiating social interactions, having an easy way to call to others that they are like them is socially beneficial. 
In conclusion, it is clear why there is a connection between these two. Alternative subcultures are a welcoming environment for many who feel like outsiders are neurodivergent individuals are often made into outsiders by default. In addition, the sounds and sights of goth specifically appeal to many of those with specific sensory differences. With such a long, rich history that continues to this day, this subculture is fit to be quite a rewarding special interest.

the real reason he can walk away and fight people with broken bones and while bleeding out is because he has an undiagnosed pain disorder. Like the one where you can’t feel pain at all. And has never realized it ever, and the batfam are completely oblivious too. Thomas Wayne (his dad) had it and never noticed either.
he sings songs to his kids, but really really bad covers. On purpose. He also has a secret YouTube music channel called “bats in the belfry” where he uploads his good guitar/vocal covers. He accidentally goes viral, and juggles a triple life as a semi-famous songwriter and singer. No one knows it’s him though, not even the league.
Thomas gave bruce all his old medical texts, and used to teach him first aid when he was little. little bruce loved it so much.
bruce actually has his doctorate in chemistry, engineering, medicine, biology, botany, and he took some random courses about the bats of Gotham and then studied veterinary medicine.
he proudly displays his many doctorates he earned in the same 3 years, in the library where no one see them.
his best friend forever is Harvey dent, even though Harvey and Harv are twoface. he does not care and randomly rocks up to his house with some good brandy, and invites them to his house always and forever.
bruce is actually a good dad, he's just also oblivious and accidentally hurts his kids feelings.
he actually hates being called bruce, and considers it his deadname. he actually one time when he was poisoned got out the name change forms filled them out with the name Bat Bruce Wayne and got his name changed and then he started feeling better after being poisoned he realised that he changed his legal name to Bat Wayne and he could not change it back. he tries to lie about it but he still has to sign forms with his legal name, no one has figured it out yet. everyone just assumes Bat Wayne is like his 9th kid or something.
bruce despite being rich as balls actually hates being rich with a passion, and literally throws his money at anything he can. when he was younger he tried desperately to get rid of all his money via charities, investing in local Gotham shops and chains, and literally paying for any health or medical care thing he could. sadly that only made the entire city of Gotham love him, and sadly he just got 30x the money he put in. and he still doesn't know how. it basically turned into a one upping where bruce tried everything he could to get rid of his money but all that happened was people started to love and adore Wayne tech and Wayne industries, and bruce Wayne's constant stream of donations to literally every single charity he could shove money in their hands. it backfired horribly and now he has a LEGION of international Bruce Wayne fans who literally give him money. he hates every single moment.
he has a weird thing going on with joker, they made out a couple times and they both refuse to ever bring it up. (bruce would have killed him if he didn't kinda have the hots for him and thought he couldn't be redeemed.)
he singlehandedly is keeping all of Gothams diverse bat species alive and well, he also has like 1,000s of pet bats in the batcave.
his favourite colour is actually yellow, but he just likes that black is stealthy.
he actually has tons and tons of scars, and no one really knows because bruce always wears fingerless gloves and long sleeves. they just think it's a fashion statement, bruce just likes covering up his scars.
he started a conspiracy that batman was actually not real and just a cryptid, he leans even more into it as Bruce Wayne.
he picks up all his kids and spins them around at random, because he loves keeping them on their feet.
he's low-key on and off dating both Catwoman and Harvey, while having work husband Clark Kent be his teammate.
the media completely forgets bruce literally has multiple doctorates some times. and when he publishes any work he does everyone is like "oh look it's Bruce Wayne, not THE Bruce Wayne of Wayne tech. science Bruce Wayne of the same name. because the playboy billionaire doesn't publish in scientific journals" and then one time he was invited to give a lecture on poison ivy's plants and the critically endangered Gotham wild rose of which there is only one left and of which he is currently keeping safe in his plant house. anyway everyone was fucking shocked and bruce put on his serious scholarly tone and started talking. while in a yellow Gotham U jumper with coffee stains on it while looking like he was in a car crashes aftermath only moments earlier. (he just forgot to set his bones again.)
bruce has autism and OCD. his special interest is gray ghost, and he fucking hates bright lights. (sun glasses indoors kinda guy)
bruce keeps like 50 photos of his kids in his wallet, 1: because it's funny 2: because he does not bring a phone with him anywhere.
and lastly, when he was doing his tour around the world to learn all types of fighting and escapism. he also learned he was horrible at cooking, just downright destructive.

Where are the open windows in hospitals?
Hospitals are exactly like corporate cubicle farms, where you see the windows in your office, but theyre never open.
So, no fresh air ever gets in.
Stuffy, recirculated air with zero outside fresh air + constant either central indoor heating or air conditioning + a bunch of sick ass people stuffed into one building isnt exactly a recipe for holistic health.
Nor is it meant to be.
Its actually a veritable hotbed for communicable diseases, viruses, infections, germs and bacteria to develop, spread and grow.
Idgaf about how "well the hospital is ventilated" -- you need fresh air, jackass!
Good luck ever getting it at a hospital.
They'll just parade you around bare ass in a drab ass drag ass light blue gown that doesnt even close all the way in the back yet have the nerve to talk about how "functional" it is.
They'll parade your literal bare ass through the hospital hallways so you can "walk around" -- but nevah outside.

There are windows, why cant I open them?
Because you cant.
The air inside a hospital is endlessly recirculated, stuffy as hell and filled to the brim with germs, bacteria, viruses and pathogens given that a hospital is, y'know, a building full of sick ass people.
Who in the hell thinks this is a good idea?
Exactly noone as hospitals are designed to mentally break you, dehumanize you and give you a different illness then the one you checked in with or make whatever your current issue is worse.
Being in a building with no outside fresh air and no open windows full of sick, dying, dead, incapacitated, vomiting, diarrhea, coughing, sneezing, wheezing, bleeding people isnt supposed to make anyone else sicker?
Yeah okay.
You need fresh air even in the best of circumstances forget about when youre sick.
You need to be in nature as it literally heals us, even their studies confirm that.
You need fresh, unrecirculated air from outside.
You need the sky, the sun, the grass and the trees.
But what do you get?
A dark, drab, sterile, lonely room with a large ass loud ass TV in it, a phone, a bed that you will be stuck in for most of your stay, a bathroom and a window you cant open.
Sounds exactly like prison.
Being stationary -- unless you are a literal invalid or completely physically incapacitated -- is awful for you.
They know this.
They know that being stationary in bed can cause DVT (deep vein thrombosis), blood clots, embolisms, poor blood circulation and bloodflow, swelling, edemas, muscle atrophy, weight gain, bed sores.
Not to mention depression, lack of mental sharpness and acuity, lethargy, anxiety, fatigue, listlessness, hopelessness, dread...
Its almost like its by design, isnt it?
Hospitals should be near parks or be built inside of parks.
All patients that are literally physically capable of going outside for fresh air and natural sunlight should do so, or if possible, should be taken outside in wheelchairs.
Blinding white bright ass unnatural fluorescent lighting has repeatedly been proven to deplete our melatonin levels, disrupt our natural circadian rhythyms, disrupt our sleep, cause insomnia and other sleep disorders -- so why is the lighting in hospitals so fucking bright???
Why do you think?
They dont want you well.
If you happen to get better after being hospitalized, its an unintended side effect.
The goal is to find -- or make up -- other things that are wrong with you so they can feed you further into the many tentacled medical industrial complex.
More diagnoses, more pills, more injections, more shots, more IVs, more surgeries, more specialists, more tests, more false positive results.
Just the way they intend it.
If youve ever visited someone in the hospital or ever been hospitalized yourself, youve probably experienced a general feeling of feeling run down, fatigued, sore, tired, like you were coming down with a cold, feeling out of sorts and out of it if you were inside a hospital for a few hours or more (days, weeks or even months).
Thats by design.
Patients should be outside every day, breathing fresh air, getting natural sunlight, touching fresh grass, hugging and sitting by trees, looking up at the clear blue sky, soaking up the sun, picking flowers and soaking up natures natural healing properties.
Nope, you get to walk up and down a ridiculously overilluminated bright ass fluorescent hallway with drab muted colors surrounding you, machines beeping, nurses having bored conversations at lunch, doctors being self-important and your bare ass cheeks on full display in your gown that doesnt "quite fully close all the way in the back."
You should be letting butterflies land on your hand, picking sunflowers, laying against trees, walking barefoot in grass, staring up at the sun and soaking up the individual rays, taking deep breaths of the fresh air all around you, looking at the clear blue sky, observing some of the cloud formations, lying on your back on the grass and staring up at the big blue sky supervised by hospital staff for about an hour a day.
That should be happening every day in every hospital.
It could be done in shifts.
Even a small park or garden even on hospital grounds or property would suffice.
In your everyday life, dont you walk outside once a day?
Even just to check the mail? Run errands? Pick up groceries? Go to work? Get takeout? Go shopping? Go to work? Meet up with friends and family? Go out to eat? See a movie? Take a walk? Go jogging?
Why is this simple freedom denied to you in a hospital?
When you need nature the most, they wont even open a window for you.
Antiseptic sterility, vomiting bleeding dying patients, coughing sneezing wheezing patients, patients with viruses, bacterial infections, open wounds, bodily fluids and emissions, mucus, phlegm, stitches, sutures, transfusions, transplants.
How would you NOT need fresh air even after one day in a hospital?
Why is hospital food so comically bad?
Youre literally back to the slop you were being force fed in elementary school but as an adult.
Since youre sick, shouldnt there be an interest in providing you with nourishing, holistic, healthy, fresh organic foods that will help heal you and aid in your recovery?
If youve ever been hospitalized, it took you back to your school days with rubbery chicken, mystery lunch meat, dry bread, nothing is seasoned, everything is out of a box, warmed over and bland as hell.
Why?
It doesnt have to be expensive!
Fresh spinach for salad is cheap, quinoa is cheap, tofu is inexpensive, steel cut oats are inexpensive, chickpeas are cheap, hummus is inexpensive, lentil beans are cheap, kale is inexpensive, kidney and black beans are cheap - these are all chock full of protein, cheap, healthy, good for you and can be prepared with fresh or cookied veggies, rice, noodles.
It doesnt have to be like this.
They want you sick and defeated.
Hospitals are literal hellholes.
Its not you.
Youre right to think they are creepy depressing prisons and incubators for all kinds of diseases and infections.
Because they are. By design.

Here are the general ones:
Ninety years before the start of Armored Core 6, childhood as a concept has been completely dismantled. Corporations have enough power to lobby the end of public education as a whole and all education is privatized. Children will work once able in the era of the Fifth Industrial Revolution. The M2M Era (Man-to-Machine).
Due to advancements in medical research and technology (for military purposes), every disability, disorder, and impairment is accommodated for the purpose of fulfilling the interests of the company. Depending on how valuable someone is, anyone can basically get any medical procedure they want. It's commonplace for employees of certain companies have some kind of medical procedure done. Employment ensures any and all healthcare. You have nothing if you not employee, there is no safety net or social program of any kind provided by what is essentially the government.
Preserving reproductive material is much more commonplace, it's actually expectation. Natural pregnancies are looked down upon since birth and recovery takes employees time away from work. Designer babies are common including eugenicist mindsets that follow. There's a weird initial treatment toward those who are naturally born leaving genetic risks to chance. Birth statuses are required on resumes.
AC cockpits have one-size-fits-all compatibitiy for all augments, manual controls, and any customization.
All augments are a variation of brain implants and synthetic hormones. Implants in the inner ear for balance, parietal lobe for sensation, and cerebellum for movement. Hormones to maintain wakefulness and awareness, regulate body functions. Hormones that relate to body regulation also modifies stem cell growth (this inadvertently affects aging as these hormones preserve the telomeres as cells divide.) are secreted into the brain, liver, and femur.
Older generations were extremely invasive because the implants required removing some brain tissue and there were complications such as bleeding, infection, or the breaking down of the actual implant injuring the brain. The implants were also susceptible to electric shock since they'd require a direct external connection. There was also no way to regulate their tempuratures.
Newer (10th) generation of augments are less invasive by no longer requiring to remove brain matter and directly stimulates the brain but can cause overstimulation and oversensitivity, making the user more prone to stress. External connections are magnetic. Hormone secretion implants include secreting coolant when the body exceeds a certain temperature or bpm reaches a certain rate, thresholds which can be fine tuned by the user. They are usually implanted in the heart and lungs.
Other augments include artificial muscles since some AC parts don't have avionic-like controls. Artifical muscles require company secret titanium alloy to replace some of the bones the they attach to.
Since the societal memory of "childhood" is nonexistent, the concept of family is too. Foremost, people are a company asset, desinger babies are conceived because of the influence of the company, they are born comfortably because of the accommodation of the company. People are born as employees indebted to the companies that brought them life.
Parents function much like backers or sponsors to pull their offspring out of general youth company training for more specialized education, for reasons such as to inherit their position. Every five years, starting from age 5 until age 20, children trainees are tested and the results will be evaluated by their parents that decide their worth to invest in them as an asset. When trainees are of age they are allowed to look up, through the company's in-house genetic database, who their parents are. If the names are not available, it means they were disowned. Trainees who never recieve an investment will become a grunt.
RLF culture is a long altered ghost of a corporate culture from a company that no longer exists. "Father" and "uncle" are intimate military titles that have lost their original meaning.
RFL care about children more thanks to the fact that the technology to incubate fetuses became derelict, natural birth has made a boom.
I don't have all of them yet but every named character in ACVI has a disability, disorder, and/or an impairment of some kind that's been accommodated for or inflicted on. No one is normal in this game. Not a single person.
Older generation augmented humans that manage to grow out hair consider it a personal victory, perserving a sliver of individuality.

Snail is 90 years old kept young due to his augments. As you know, my dear friend, he has had one billion plastic surgeries. He's changed his gender 17 times. He has race swapped so much that the company told him to stop. He's had honkers, he's had cock, pussy, you name it and he's vain about it. I like to think this happened because his face was split in half during combat may years ago. He doesn't like Pater, he smells Pater's avarice from a mile away; recognition of self. He doesn't like anyone. Snail is a freak He's a sadomaso. He loves natural, unaugmented cock. Like everyone who's been a corporate slave who does actually all the work their whole life, he's fucked in the head. He likes to do fucked up things to those in re-education. Sorry, 621 and Walter. If he really doesn't like them for real he just takes the frontal lobe. Sorry, Swinburne. He hates old people, he hates mental illness, he hates animals.
Freud is in his 30s and he is actually naturally born. Someone like the top Vesper being naturally born can sway public opinion. He delegates authority to Snail for canon reasons but he does it to bully him for being so annoying and controlling. Like Snail, he also has authority to send people to re-education and also oversee it himself if he ever cared to. Freud is a man who gives no shits about anything that isn't about his AC and combat. He likes to look at stats and parts and planning budgets for them, and sorting them onto tierlists. He's also got a great cock. He has an assortment of children invested by the company (nicknamed as Freudlings) due to his impressive genetics. He doesn't really care about them other than their combat ability and only likes to spar or talk combat with them every once in a while. They admire him ferociously as the top Vesper and some want to surpass him.
Pater has spedrun life. He has the knack of figuring out the corporate game and exploits and appeals to climb the ladder. There was a certain psychological evaluation required for tenth generation augmentation, he passed with flying colors. He moseys up to anyone who may help him even if he has to subtely play the role of whatever appeals to them the most. His emotional state is determined by the amount of stress he endures from overstimulation. Pater is a twin! His twin was nonviable and is just kept in a tube somewhere in case he needs its cells or something.
O'Keeffe is initially deaf in one ear from a self inflicted wound. The tinnitus from his Second Generation augments were too much some times.
Rusty is far-sighted. He's 28 years old.
HONEST BRUTE! A headcanon of yours is a headcanon of mine. He's a coral head who's a pervert freak on every level and lives like shit. His clothes are stained, there's fruitflies swarming the trashcan near his bed, there are bedbugs in his dirty mattress on the floor next to his used needles and bent spoons. The euphoria of coral drugs for him is that it vibrates his augments in a way that stimulates pleasure center in the brain. His olfactory nerves were damaged from snorting the stuff so he's anosmic. And one of the only scents he can smell is ammonia. Do what you wish with that information. He does injections now. He gets bloody noses and has coral breath and is greasy. Despite this, he's extremely charming snd persuasive. He was Carla's kitten. He got close to Carla by lying to others effectively sabotaging them and taking their place, completely impulsively. Like, he stole the Overed Rail Canon literally just because. He's got insane good memory too, it really helps him sell the lie. He once got caught fucking Chatty by Carla. You know that guy who got caught fucking the washing machine? He's a very good lover. Are you really having a good time if you both aren't also high on coral? He smells so bad that it when it gets on you, other people would know you spent time with him. The smegma in his chastity cage-marked foreskin has crystalized. God i need to fuck this guy
Sulla hates Walter for making him eat the doodoo and will kill or fuck his dogs to spite him. And wants to be a dog owner himself but better and cuts someone else's french toast for them.
My 621 has leg nerve damage, muscle atrophy, selective mutism, and prone to hypothermia and is also so hot and sexy and fuckable, everybody wants it. 621's muscles are to weak to cut its own french toast so Walter cuts them for it and he does it so badly it's horrible! 621 sides with anyone that has its wheelchair. 621 didnt have time for for any physical recovery arriving on Rubicon so its AC is controlled mostly through extremly invasive augments in the brain and has been tuned to respond to fine finger movements. If anyone would care to help 621 through physical therapy and see its hair grow in patches it would be so sexy. So much tension.
