its not like i could call it the "donnie is the only one with college opportunities because mikey is barely skirting by with Cs, leo had to drop out because unmedicated adhd, and raph skipped most opportunities for higher education especially with sports to focus on providing for the family, so donnie's doing running start while also working a job because his father's dercums progressed to a point where he cant even really go outside without being in immense pain because they dont have enough money or insurance to afford any real care (and no extended family to fall back on because splinter was cut off from them, other than a cousin across the country) and rely on april to drive them around, and then the landlord unexpectedly raises rent in an attempt to get them out and donnie because he's taken on the job of managing their finances decides to hide this from them and start working a SECOND job under the table that includes the fucking graveyard shift with a boss that barely pays him enough under the table and its partially because he's blasian AND trans, and this is also while he's going to running start college, while having a job to go to right after running start college, and also he has to worry about tutoring mikey and helping leo get a GED and groceries and like everything because he doesn't want to put more undue stress on raph who is the only line of support he would normally have here" au. although maybe it would be funny if i did?

i got carried away when making the joke. there's the premise i guess. i'll probably just write one big oneshot but because all of them have Prablems maybe i'll expand a little, right now im keeping the scope small so dont expect anything for a while since i have so much to do atm, i'll talk about if people want to hear more though! .... i did not expect to get as invested as i did. Whether he's albino or not, he's going to be chronically light skinned regardless.

I like the albinism headcanon because it makes him stand out even more (we love a boy who loves to be the center of attention)

Also plays into the fact that he is intuitive, and therefore wouldn't need great vision to perform exceptionally in battle

Also explains why he likes sunglasses, he's got sensitive eyes

Speaking of eyes, they're blueish if he's albino. Otherwise they're dark brown.

I don't have a concrete reason for this, other than the fact that I headcanon Mikey with severe hair damage which results in him losing his curls in the bad future. (I took that little swoop in his hair and RAN WITH IT.) Because of this, i also headcanon him with loose curls to make this make more sense lmao

His baby curls wouldn't do too well in most protective styles so he just doesn't wear them.

Tmnt 2012 hc:

I think that if the turtles were humanized they would all be black and/or blasian since they’re siblings and would have to have the same genetic tree (in 2012 I’m pretty sure they’re biologically related). However I love idea that they have slight differences between them since they hang out in different areas in nyc (a diverse city with a bunch of different cultures that I think would really interest them).

So anyways I hc that Splinter brought them all up to be bilingual, however Raph and Donnie aren’t as good at Japanese anymore since I think they aren’t as good with languages and they would consume a lot of English content growing up + Leo probably started translating Splinter for them and they kinda stopped needing to use it, so it faded a bit. I think Raph stopped speaking Japanese but can still understand it and could speak it (with some grammar and pronunciation errors) in a pinch. Donnie rarely speaks Japanese but he speaks it from time to time with Splinter, Leo, or Mikey. Leo is probably fluent in Japanese and English and I think her (Leo is transfem in my books) and Mikey can read Japanese while Raph and Donnie can’t. However, I think that Leo code switches and sometimes makes tiny grammar/pronunciation errors, with Mikey being the best at Japanese of all their (Mikey is aroace gender-fluid) siblings.

I don’t think Raph is a big language buff (unlabeled he/him non binary Raph supremacy), so he probably just knows English and Japanese. Meanwhile, I think Donnie knows code languages and probably taught themself (They/them for Donnie, source: me) obscure/dead/constructed languages like Esperanto or Latin. Leo probably can understand/read Spanish to some extent, though she’s barely conversational speaking it. She might also know certain phrases in a bunch of different languages since I hc that she wants to travel. Mikey, in my opinion, will be the best at picking up languages, probably fluent in Latin American Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, and Cantonese, conversational in Italian and Korean, and has begun to pick up some Haitian Creole (though her pronunciation isn’t good because she probably sounds either very American or has WAY to heavy of an accent). They also codeswitch and mesh together languages pretty often, so his siblings have begun to pick up a bit of their languages, especially Leo (how she learned Latin American Spanish)

I think they speak primarily English among themselves and Japanese/English with Splinter, who is plays a little game with himself when he hears music to guess the language it’s in

MUTANT APOCALYPSE IS BAD AND I HATE IT IN THIS ESSAY I WILL-

in all seriousness tho, i try to be as... chill in here as i can (i say while knees deep in a hyperfixation-fueled writing of an angst ridden rottmnt au), but even the chillest of people has one (or a few) gripes with reality. one of mine is, when people antagonize other people over their preferred headcanons (i have a... post, ranting about similar stuff a bit, so as to not get into it here).

and my one of my biggest gripes with tmnt: the 2012 edition (besides the very obvious sexism, slightly less obvious racism and a milion of bad writing choices) is the space arc (not talking about it now, possibly not ever) and the MUTANT APOCALYPSE.

i. hate. the mutant apocalypse. it has ugly designs, the plot makes very little sense, everything looks like shit and worse, the leo thing is possibly the silliest thing i've seen in tmnt franchise since reading volume 4 of the mirage comics and just usghshsksndhdukdnd. bad. bad arc.

it oozes hypermasculinity in a way similar to the bayverse movies. it completely looses the martial arts aspect of the turtles and replaces it with generic gun stuff. not a fan.

THE HUMANS ARE DEAD.

AND EVEN WORSE, APRIL IS DEAD.

honestly, i call bullshit. april deserved to live. april deserved to be the final boss, she deserved to be the most powerful being in the universe and she deserved better, than what the writers gave her.

this isn't supposed to be an april rant.

overall, i think that mutant apocalypse is an idea. could it be good? considering, how the fandom clings to the apocalyptic storylines in 03 and rise, i would say, yes? obviously, it was done quite badly tho, like the creators wanted to make a macho man blockbuster movie about macho apocalypse and random guys saving one girl and finding the garden of eden or some other christian thing. but the blockbuster is dead, because they're making a ninja turtles cartoon and they already killed one rat like 5 times, no shock value is left in the show. so they took the characters, but them into some fucked up, unfitting molds, broke just about every rule of thw established universe and made an arc that makes me mad every time i remember it exist.

ps. WHY WASN'T MONA IN MUTANT APOCALYPSE???!! THAT WOULD BE THE PERFECT PLACE FOR HER!!! WHAT ABOUT ANY OTHER MUTANT EVER?!!!! ARE THE TURTLES THE ONLY PEOPLE LEFT FROM THE OLD WORLD, DID EVERYONE ELSE JUST RANDOMLY SPAWN INTO EXISTENCE THE MOMENT THE BOMB HIT?!!!! WTF!!!

ps.2. the only thing good that came out of mutant apocalypse was robot donnie (and maybe the blasian behavior mikey), and even still i can't look at him the same ever since i saw a post talking about how this isn't donnie, this is just a copy of his teen-aged brain in a robot body, and i have to agree, especially with how he doesn't act any different, like he's just stuck at that stage of his life forever because he's dead. anyway, still cute and has rabbit ear that now feature in every robot design i make.

They're all blasian (I hope I represent the features well) and have scars from being raised by Draxum. I'm probably going to change Mikey's hairstyle in future drawings and some of the clothing as well.

Also, Leo is being portrayed as AFAB here, but is still identifying as male.

(If Donnie had a battle shell in this AU, I definitly would have translated into a medical corsett (pretty sure that's not the correct term) for him.)

Im sorry its been something i’ve noticed a lot in human designs but why is Leo the only turtle who resembles Splinter even a little bit when they’re ALL his bio kids and would technically be half japanese? Its just weird because the most common theme for human turtles I’ve seen is “black kid black kid black kid lightskinned blasian kid who is also leader” and its starting to rub me wrong. You’re not the only person doing it, but you are the first person to show up on my dash when the question has been itching at me.

Wow. It's actually remarkable that anyone is remotely miffed about this, but let's talk about it.

I am an East Asian artist from a multiethnic family. Some of my family members appear very Asian. Some appear very Middle Eastern. From personal experience, I can assert that all because somebody does not have the stereotypical features of one race does not make that ethnic identity any less valid. Donnie, Raph, and Mikey are also Japanese and Black. Calm down.

It is also a popular headcanon that human Leo looks more like his dad because it is stated multiple times in the show that he particularly resembles him (such as in the fish and ladders episode, or when they literally wear matching outfits in the Battle Nexus). Sometimes Blasian kids get an extra dose of the "Asian." It does not make them any less Black. It also does not make their other siblings any less Asian.

Additionally, TMNT is a franchise with heavy found family themes. Even if they're not genetically related, it should NOT "rub you wrong" to see siblings from different races, nor to see someone who is more Asian in appearance in a leadership role.

This is a largely safe fandom and it is valid to ask questions but we're talking about a sweet silly show about turtles. Let's keep this a microaggression-free space, shall we?

TEENAGE MUTANT SIBLINGS: THE BEGINNING

Mikey is the oldest at age 17, and is a Scorpion mud turtle.

Donnie is the second oldest at age 15, and is a Black softshell turtle.

Raph is the second youngest at 14 (and ten hours!!), and is a Black knobbed map turtle.

Leo is the youngest at 14, and is a Blanding's turtle.

They all have human designs because of cloaking magic, and Splinter is still a human named Hamato Hiroshi.

Mikey is a trans man (he/him, 6'1)

Donnie is agender (they/them, 5'7)

Raph is a trans girl (she/her, 5'1)

and Leo doesn't care about gender (any pronouns, 5'5)

Mikey is bi, Donnie is a lesbian, Raph is bi with a preference for women and Leo is aroace.

The main villian is not shredder, nor Karai.

It is a very powerful yōkai who found out that the american government experimented on a human and four baby turtles, before the lab "mysteriously" blew up and the results were deemed inconclusive.

Hamato Karai is Hiroshi's older sister, and is the person he called after being experimented on by the american government in an attempt to make indestructible supersoldiers. He moves back to Japan and lives close to her in Osaka. She is the cool aunt. It is her.

Hiroshi is a single dad raising four mutant teenagers, and teaches them ninjustu in case anything bad happens in the future. (Which. It will.)

Mikey uses nunchaku as well as a kusari-fundo, Donnie uses a metal bō staff outfitted with hidden blades that's painted to look uncannily like wood, Raph uses tonfa as well as sai, and Leo uses dual katanas with hidden tantō in his belt.

Mikey's fashion sense is very bright and flowy, taking inspiration from harajuku streetwear. He loves anything bright and comfortable, with as much freedom to move in as possible. His fashion icons are Myspace Scene Kings/Queens, A Certain Kpop Idol (Jung Hoseok.), and Lil Nas X.

Donnie's fashion sense is basically just goth, techwear, and cybergoth in various shades of purple, black, and maybe sometimes indigo. Their fashion icons are Ye Olde Myspace Cybergoths, Vkei idols, and young Donatella Versace.

Raph's fashion sense is deceptively cutesy. Anything pink, fluffy, comfy and lolita-inspired. She wears bike shorts under every outfit, and is adept at fighting in any kind of outfit, though she's always sad if one gets ruined. And then she beats up the person who ruined it. Her biggest style icons are Princess Peach, Strawberry Shortcake and Kyary Pamyu Pamyu.

Leo's fashion sense is very androgynous, with inspirations from mode fashion, academia and classic 2000's aesthetics. Their fashion icons are David Bowie, Yohji Yamamoto, and (according to Raph) "Every librarian ever."

All of them are blasian, and ended up moving to New York with their father and aunt when Mikey was 15. They currently live in Brooklyn.
