From Cherry Blossoms to Giant Robots: How Anime and Japanese Culture Captivate the World
Imagine a world where cherry blossoms float through the air, where samurai honor codes meet futuristic technology, and where everyone, from a teenager in New York to a retiree in Paris, can find joy in animated tales of adventure, romance, and heroism. Welcome to the realm of anime and Japanese culture, a vibrant, dynamic force that has crossed borders and generations, leaving an indelible mark on global society.
The importance and growth of anime.
Anime, Japan's unique style of animation, isn't just cartoons it's a cultural phenomenon. From classics like "Astro Boy" and "Dragon Ball" to modern hits like "Attack on Titan" and "My Hero Academia," anime has a diverse range of genres that appeal to all ages. What makes anime so special? It's the blend of intricate storytelling, complex characters, and stunning visuals. These aren't just shows; they're experiences that pull you into their world.
Anime is a gateway to Japanese culture. Through anime, viewers learn about traditional customs, festivals, and even cuisine. Think of "Spirited Away," where the protagonist, Chihiro, navigates a magical bathhouse filled with spirits a nod to Japan's rich folklore and Shinto beliefs. Or "Your Name," which beautifully portrays the rural-urban divide and the traditional practice of "musubi" (tying threads as a symbol of connection).
Global influence by connecting generations
Anime's influence stretches far beyond entertainment. It's a style, a vibe, a community. Fashion brands like Uniqlo and Gucci have launched anime-themed collections, while sports stars like Naomi Osaka openly express their love for anime characters. Moreover, the principles and aesthetics of anime have seeped into global pop culture, inspiring everything from Hollywood films to video games.
One of the most magical aspects of anime is its ability to bridge generational gaps. Parents and children can bond over shared favorites like "Pokémon" or "Studio Ghibli" films. For the older generation, anime offers a nostalgic trip back to their childhood while providing fresh stories that resonate with today's themes and issues.
Anime has created a global community of fans who gather at conventions, participate in cosplay, and engage in online discussions. Events like Anime Expo in Los Angeles or Comiket in Tokyo draw fans from all over the world, celebrating their love for this unique art form.
Fun Fact: The Origins of Cosplay
Did you know that cosplay (dressing up as characters from anime, manga, and video games) originated in Japan? The term "cosplay" comes from "costume play," and it has become a worldwide phenomenon. From local conventions to international events, cosplay is a testament to the creativity and dedication of anime fans.
Anime and Japanese culture are more than just entertainment they are a window into a different way of life, filled with beauty, tradition, and endless creativity. They remind us that, no matter where we are in the world, we can find common ground in the stories we love and the values they teach us. So, whether you're a seasoned otaku or a curious newcomer, dive into the world of anime. You might just find a new favorite story or even a new perspective on life.
Ready to start your anime journey? Check out classics like "Naruto" or "Sailor Moon," or dive into newer hits like "Demon Slayer" or "Jujutsu Kaisen." And if you're already a fan, share your favorite anime moments with someone new you never know whose life you might brighten with a little bit of anime magic.
Happy watching, and may your adventures be as epic as your favorite anime!

John Wick 4: 'But why though?'
John Wick isn't 'back'. He never left. He merely bided his time till the world needed him, needed the Baba Yaga to remind the world about the necessity of doing things with Style.
The importance of Style in John Wick 4 is inversely proportional to John's regard for the generally accepted rules of a firefight. The word Style was the running theme of John Wick 4, and the film's director managed to find a dozen ways to manifest Style on the big screen and crammed them all into a 2-hour-plus action movie.
Truth be told, he shouldn't have. Truth be told? He shouldn't have.
John Wick 4 starts with John making his move against the High Table after the events of Parabellum. John's strategy in this case is to make as big a mess as he can with his first move, then pop the heads of whoever comes to clean up the mess like a macabre game of Whack-a-mole.
In response to this, the High Table empowers the Marquis De Grammont with carte blanche access to the Table's resources and unleashes their new hunting dog against the infamous Baba Yaga. The High Table's new Hound wastes no time in drawing blood wherever it can by destroying the continental hotels, starting with New York, and the deaths that result becomes one death too many in John Wick's already full ledger of souls he has dealt the Ruska Roma haircut.
John, therefore, decides to cut off the head of the snake and goes to challenge the Marquis to single combat. According to the old laws of the High Table which governs the relationships between the members who sit at the table.
Along the way, John meets up with old friends at the Continental Hotel in Osaka, duels a blind man brilliantly played by Donnie Yen, and deals with a Man-Hunter who is saving John for when John's bounty gathers the requisite number of digits and zeroes to make him worth the killing.
John also beats up Scott Adkins wearing a fat suit.
Why though?
That question, that 'why though?' That was what struck me halfway through John Wick 4. The Osaka Continental was a gorgeously designed, Japanese-Themed Hotel for Assassins. Seeing Donnie Yen fight like a blind man was a creative exercise in character design, and Scott Adkins turning a single hand of cards into a work of art was a testament to the amount of work he had put in to prepare for his rather short, but impactful role.
However, none of these new characters and locations were really interesting.
Every new character and location had a point in John Wick 2 and John Wick 3; Parabellum. The D'Antonio siblings in John Wick 2 gave us an insight into the High Table and the conflicts among the table's members.
Cassian and Ares served by introducing the concept of Bodyguards as a counterpart and a countermeasure against Assassins.
In Parabellum, the Adjudicator and the Ninjas introduce the methods the High Table relies on to enforce their rules and rule over their subjects 'Under the Table'.
Even the Ruska Roma were poignantly important as the organization gave the audience insight into John Wick's childhood as a Belarusian orphan raised to serve the High Table.
Every character and location in John Wick 2 and 3 had a purpose as they answered questions about the John Wick universe and deepened the immersion of the audience into the story of John Wick's journey through the world under the High Table.
John Wick 2 and 3 interested me. John Wick 4, however, was a mind-numbing ride through willy wonka's chocolate factory with rivers of blood instead of chocolate, and trees that bore as its fruits lead and death. It's really cool, but why? What is the point of it all?
In John Wick 4, John goes to Osaka to meet an old friend, who is also the concierge of the Osaka Continental. A fusion of neon lights and Japanese tradition that is heavily inspired by the Yakuza motif. Japan's efficient modernity, clean steel edges lit up with gaudy neon, a monolithic testament to the present day beneath which lay the rigid adherence to the traditions that underscored the 'extreme way' of the Yakuza of old.
But why did John Wick need to go to Japan? As exquisitely thought out as the Osaka Continental was, what purpose did John Wick's detour to Japan serve?
That is the issue that underlies John Wick 4, what is the purpose of the Osaka Continental? What is the purpose of the Marquis, or Caine, or the Harbinger? All of their roles in the narrative could be replaced by characters already introduced in previous movies. The Harbinger could be the Adjudicator from Parabellum, Caine could be played by Cassian from JW2, and having John resolve his differences with these characters from the previous movies may have given John Wick 4 greater impact. According to the theme that the movie had about the end of John Wick.
Ultimately, John Wick 4 was a stylish movie that introduced new, cool things that pushed the story of John Wick to a new level.
But why though? When the story of John Wick was supposed to end?

Renowned as the fashion capitals of the world, these cities continue to dominate fashion news with their innovative trends, iconic events, and influential designers. Let’s explore what’s trending in these style powerhouses right now.
Milan: A Celebration of Craftsmanship and Elegance
Milan, the heart of Italian fashion, is synonymous with luxury and timeless elegance. This season, Milanese designers are drawing inspiration from their rich heritage while pushing boundaries with contemporary twists.
Minimalism Meets Maximalism Milan is witnessing a fascinating juxtaposition between minimalistic silhouettes and maximalist embellishments. Designers like Prada and Valentino have embraced clean lines, but they’re elevating them with bold accessories, intricate embroidery, and vibrant colors.
Sustainable Luxe Sustainability remains a central theme in Milan’s fashion circles. Luxury brands such as Gucci and Versace are incorporating eco-friendly materials into their collections, proving that high-end fashion can be both opulent and environmentally responsible.
Milan Fashion Week Highlights Recent headlines from Milan Fashion Week celebrated a revival of 90s fashion with oversized suits, slip dresses, and platform heels stealing the show. The return to retro aesthetics, combined with modern tailoring, reflects Milan’s unique ability to merge nostalgia with innovation.
New York: Street Style Meets High Fashion
New York City, the epicenter of urban cool, continues to set trends that resonate globally. Known for its diverse and democratic approach to fashion, NYC blends high fashion with streetwear like no other city.
Inclusive Fashion Takes Center Stage Inclusivity is dominating fashion news in New York. Designers are creating collections that celebrate diversity in body types, skin tones, and gender expressions. Brands like Chromat and Christian Siriano are leading the charge with bold, unapologetic designs.
Athleisure Evolution The athleisure trend, which began in New York, has evolved into sophisticated everyday wear. This season, expect to see elevated sportswear featuring premium fabrics, tailored fits, and versatile pieces that transition seamlessly from the gym to a night out.
NYFW’s Focus on Technology New York Fashion Week embraced technology this year, incorporating augmented reality and virtual runways to make fashion shows more accessible. The digital-first approach is setting a precedent for how the industry might operate in a tech-driven world.
Tokyo: Where Tradition Meets Futurism
Tokyo’s fashion scene is a melting pot of avant-garde creativity, traditional influences, and futuristic designs. The city’s fearless approach to style makes it a constant fixture in global fashion news.
Harajuku Revival The iconic Harajuku style is making a strong comeback, but with a modern twist. Layered, colorful outfits with bold prints and exaggerated accessories are blending seamlessly with minimalist, monochromatic ensembles—a perfect representation of Tokyo’s duality.
Techwear Dominance As a global tech hub, Tokyo’s influence on techwear is unmatched. Brands like ACRONYM and ASICS are leading the charge with innovative fabrics, weather-resistant materials, and functional designs that appeal to both fashion enthusiasts and tech-savvy consumers.
Cultural Aesthetics Designers in Tokyo are infusing traditional Japanese elements into contemporary collections. From kimono-inspired cuts to fabric-dyeing techniques like shibori, the fusion of heritage and modernity is captivating audiences worldwide.
Why These Capitals Dominate Fashion News
What sets Milan, New York, and Tokyo apart is their ability to continually innovate while staying true to their unique identities. Milan celebrates heritage and luxury, New York champions inclusivity and practicality, and Tokyo thrives on fearless experimentation. Together, these cities shape global trends and influence fashion enthusiasts everywhere.
As we look to the future, it’s clear that these fashion capitals will continue to dominate fashion news, not just through their runway shows but also by leading the charge in sustainability, technology, and cultural innovation. Whether you’re a minimalist seeking Milanese elegance, a trendsetter inspired by New York’s street style, or an avant-garde enthusiast drawn to Tokyo’s experimental designs, there’s something for everyone in these style capitals.

Why Tokyo is the Perfect New Year’s Destination
Tokyo’s New Year’s celebrations, known as Shogatsu, stand out because of their rich cultural significance and variety of activities. Unlike many cities that focus on parties and fireworks, Tokyo combines age-old customs with modern festivities, giving visitors a deeper and more meaningful connection to the holiday.

One of Tokyo’s most cherished New Year’s customs is Hatsumode, the first shrine or temple visit of the year. This tradition allows people to reflect, pray for good fortune, and start the year with a peaceful mind.
Here are some of the most popular places to participate in Hatsumode:

Senso-ji Temple: Tokyo’s oldest temple, located in the bustling district of Asakusa, offers a mix of culture and history.

Tokyo Disneyland and DisneySea: Ring in the New Year with a magical experience at one of the world’s most beloved theme parks.
No matter your style of celebration, Tokyo offers a wide range of options to suit every traveler.
3. Incredible Food to Begin the Year Right
Food plays a central role in Tokyo’s New Year traditions. During this time, you’ll find many seasonal dishes that symbolize luck, prosperity, and health.
Osechi Ryori: A beautifully arranged meal served in lacquered boxes, featuring symbolic foods such as black beans (good health) and herring roe (fertility).
Toshikoshi Soba: Long buckwheat noodles eaten on New Year’s Eve, representing a long and prosperous life.
Mochi (Rice Cakes): A sweet and chewy treat that’s a staple of Japanese celebrations.

Fandom and Americanization of everything
This is going to be a broken rant featuring 3, probably, fandoms and exploring how everything gets made distinctly American by fandoms. Starting with:
Harry Potter, his dad's friends, and minor mess ups
I do not think anyone is claiming that the Potters, and associates, aren't British. We all know they are. Harry grew up in Surrey, Hogwarts is in Scotland, and Godric's Hollow is in Cornwall (?). This is readily available information. However, people find a way to make these characters more comfortable to an American audience. Of course, there's the Philosopher's stone —> Sorcerer's stone thing, but there's more to it. It's writing them eating peeps or candycorn, things that do not really exist in Britain. It's very subtle details, but they remind you that the creator is American, not British, and isn't trying.
I understand the urge to write what you know. And every writer will put pieces of themselves into every story they write. However, this information is a Google search away. When it comes to things like food, you can go drastically wrong very quickly, and googling it is easy.
This Americanization also shows with how they talk about things, at times. "Built like a football player" doesn't make sense in English English. So they wouldn't say it. In fact, a lot of them wouldn't reference muggle sport at all.
However, there's worse.
L, Near, Mello, and google being free
Whammy's being in Winchester is something you can find with a Google search. North England.
Now, this being ignored is partially the Anime's fault, as the English dub gives all of them American accents. However, it doesn't mean the fandom's nonsense makes any sense. "Near would celebrate thanksgiving by—" he wouldn't celebrate. He may live in New York now, but he's English. I've always viewed him as being from the South East, but this isn't canon. "L hated Fourth of July as child because–" he was in North England, his beef was with Bonfire Night. And that's fair enough. L hating fireworks is a reasonable headcanon.
Once again, it is a case of British characters getting painted as American because people see something that looks like them, and so assume it is them.
However...
Demon Slayer. Seriously.
I have got nothing against silly skits of how these characters would behave in silly scenarios, like modern thanksgiving. But, genuinely, they're Japanese, and the story is set in the mid-1910s. So, you know. They aren't experiencing the beginnings of the Roaring Twenties. That was in America. They hardly know what planes are. Tanjiro didn't see a train until the Mugen train.
Maybe Muzan's outfits confused you, but they are all firmly Japanese. There ain't a single foreigner in the show, to my knowledge. And, therefore, there are considerable cultural differences that the Fandom either removes entirely, or fails to understand.
I don't like Uzui, precisely for the things I'm about to mention, but people fail to understand his more controversial actions. Him spanking Aoi? Definitely in the wrong, yes, but it was a common punishment at the time for a disrespectful child. Him saying his female coworkers have childbearing hips? Strange, sure, but it was a common compliment at the time. The only thing he does that was definitely frowned upon was marrying an eleven year old at fifteen. That wasn't illegal, but would have been strange (however, marrying his cousin was fine).
I feel like Uzui was the greatest example, but I can continue. Rengoku's "Umai!" habit is not a weird character quirk. Well, it is, but it's also a samurai tradition to savour every bite of food because it may well be their last. Which is what we see him do.
Also, Senjuro wears white for mourning when we meet him, but Shinjuro is wearing dark blue. He is not in a mourning period for his eldest son. That needs to be talked about more.
Anyway, nap time now.
#death note#harry potter#demon slayer#kny#rant post#demonslayer is the findl one because its the wildest#y'all thought they'd behave like modern americans????

Fan Chon Hoo in New York, #Day 4
Day 4. The day began with a volunteer event to beautify 132 St Block Association Park. I had a bit of trouble trying to locate the garden, and as I finally showed up at the garden, the person in charge/head volunteer—Aubrey—told me there was some miscommunication; the event was supposed to be tomorrow on a Saturday, not on a Friday. Aubrey decided that we’ll do some composting anyway. We received a pair of gloves and hedge shears for myself and another college student, Jori, and began trimming down some plants to prepare the garden for winter. Once we collected enough fresh green clipping for the composting, we moved on to raking the dried leaves (brown material). I also helped to sharpen some of the tools with sandpaper. Next, they assigned me the task of mulching the dried leaves. Finally, we gathered enough brown and green parts for composting. It was a good four-hour workout, and Aubrey was patient, and I could feel his passion for creating a nice garden for the community. The yellowing Japanese maple tree against the sun looked stunning, and I missed the smell of moist earth. I think it is nice to have a patch of green garden to labour over. If the garden is open for public use, I would love to visit it again before I leave.
The second activity was to attend the screening of the documentary "Jazz in China" by Dr. Eugene Marlow at the CUNY Graduate Center. From the program synopsis, “The documentary chronicles the 100-year story of how jazz—a democratic form of music through improvisation—exists and thrives in China—a country with a long tradition of adherence to central authority.” The hour-long documentary tries to timestamp jazz development through important historical happenings in China: political division in the 1930s, WWII, cultural revolution in the 1960s, the passing of Chairman Mao in 1976, and contemporary China today. I think it is a rather simplistic way of trying to drive home the point about jazz being a western cultural product that was embraced by some Chinese musicians, suppressed during the cultural revolution, and now being revived and celebrated by the growing middle population in China. According to my basic understanding of jazz as a music genre, it was once considered a transgressive and political medium, similar to how certain Indonesian dangdut music can be perceived as political. Despite jazz being a century-old music genre with numerous subgenres emerging over time, the director's intended focus on a specific type of jazz was not clearly defined. I wanted to learn how the Chinese have adopted jazz and how jazz has influenced modern musicians. Almost at the end of the program, I was happy to meet Favour Ritaro, a Nigerian curator who now resides in NYC, and her friend Buyana. It was a shame they couldn’t make it on time. We had a brief chat before we left the venue.
The last activity on my calendar was interesting. I was supposed to watch a YouTube clip called GUTFELD!, a conservative Fox News show hosted by Greg Gutfeld. The link didn’t work, but I managed to watch one of the latest episodes called “Well, this is downright shocking," an episode to basically commemorate the winning of Donald Trump as the newly elected President. The episode featured a plethora of irrational remarks about physical appearances, constant references to body parts and faeces, and occasional biblical allusions, primarily aimed at ridiculing politicians, celebrities, TV hosts, and other individuals who publicly support democratic artists. Although my knowledge of American politics is limited, and I lack the necessary context or references to fully comprehend the show's content, I find it shocking to learn about the comments made on news channels. The show's statements, such as "We decided as a country to move forward today; that means no more blaming the people today for the misdeeds of their ancestors" and "I get up the next day and I get dressed like I always do, by a team of Slovakian migrants," are truly mind-blowing. I don't think this can happen on Malaysian news channels. Prior to this, my YouTube algorithm had been recommending clips from shows such as Jimmy Kimmel, Jimmy Fallon, Stephen Colbert, and John Oliver, which primarily featured liberal content. These shows also poked fun at conservatives, albeit with a less personal or vulgar tone. To learn about political news through TV talk show hosts/personalities, conservative or otherwise, is new to me, as is the influence and power given to these individuals. It is refreshing to try to see it from the other side, and I guess my YouTube algorithm might start to feed me with more pro-conservative content.
