first and foremost, since i've been getting a lot of sdv tiktoks, i have to say that i will never ever in a hundred thousand years understand the elliott hate!!!! like cmon guys this dude dedicated his BOOK TO YOU!!! is that not peak romance?? i think i would literally faint idk like. i saw a tiktok where someone said he would cheat on the farmer and i just. from a writer's standpoint that is just not accurate!!! this man is a simp for the farmer through and through.

i personally think elliott's one of the most mature bachelors, like him and harvey in my head are the most emotionally mature. i think i brought this up in a previous ask but elliott just gives vibes of "i moved here to start over and escape the messy shit that happened in my past." you're telling me he only moved to the valley for writing inspo?? ain't no way, this guy went through some shit romantically and now he can't stand being in the city for long periods of time bc it reminds him of them.

and his marriage dialogue?? he's a WRITER, everyone, he's romantic asf!!! literally rants about your beauty. cmon. he's the blueprint. elliott saw the standards and decided to exceed them.

“Once the tomato base has reduced,” your voice explained as the pot of rich red sauce simmered on the screen, “you’ll add the parboiled rice and mix it thoroughly so it soaks up all that flavor—”

I couldn't put on a finger on why the whole tiktok migration to xhs left a sour taste in me until I got annoyed at recent subtle sinophobic comments towards Love and Deepspace left in the tags. (It's a Chinese game that has a global/English server)

Which had me thinking and seeking out if other people felt the same way. The Americans found a new platform, the Chinese on the platform are welcoming and attempts to speak to the Americans in English. Cool, what is left? The third group of people out here that aren't Americans or Chinese in China, it's us Chinese diaspora that live outside of China (in particular the west). We learnt English, forced to erase everything Chinese about ourselves to fit in here fit in there but never fully get accepted into any community. Online spaces are no better, we get all sorts of hate even though we are all communicating in English. One comment that I read on tumblr here a while back that really struck me was op posted something regrading Chinese culture and some white person dismissed op for having a Chinese url so they must not speak English to speak on a Chinese topic.

Americans barging themselves into other people's spaces seemingly with no effort is the most white privilege behaviour ever. Some of them don't bother learning the language, the culture, or social etiquettes. To call it 'refugees' in this current climate is lowkey insensitive even as a joke. Some are just outright racist saying they are there to colonise the app. The offhanded uninformed political jokes are also on thin ice. If this was reversed and a massive group of Chinese people suddenly joins instagram/twitter/tumblr, starts posting in Chinese, the comment sections will not be as 'haha funny' and 'wholesome' as the ones on xhs.

White people posting selfies on the app is harvesting thousands of likes and compliments is the prime example of white privilege, they don't have to work hard to get far, boosting their egos further more. How am I supposed to feel even when I share something on here of my culture either get no recognition or sinophobic comments?

There's a sense of helplessness when I see my people pandering to the white, similar to when Chinese diaspora/Chinese in China on the discussion of cultural appropriation. The experiences the two groups have are vastly different. I don't blame them for this. China, for the most part, is still a very closed society, a handful of them probably never left the country, interacted with a white person or had any prejudice against them for being Chinese. To them, it's just an amusing conversation or two without much thought. At the end of the day when the Americans leave the app, it'll be another fever dream. But for us, we still have to go to work with these privileged white people, come home from work to what I thought was a Chinese safe space to find that insufferable co-worker is on xhs going 'hello China [google translate some nonsense]'.

That said, I suppose for me who is able to post this on tumblr is a somewhat privilege move. For the people in China, it is an avenue to interact with Americans on a large scale without having to use a vpn. The welcoming atmosphere gives me peace knowing that to be respectful is still in our core. For the Americans, whether they are on the app out of spite without thinking of the consequences or to learn about China with an open mind, only time will tell if they will remain on xhs after the fad dies out.

i don't want to take up too much space or add negativity here by talking about it, but i do want to touch upon it.

this fandom is difficult. it's difficult in a way it never should have been, and it is nearly impossible to engage with it interactively in a way that doesn't cause you any harm.

and i think the thing i've been coming to terms with recently, is that i can't engage with it how i have been without causing harm in a general sense - especially over on tiktok.

there's a kind of complacency at the moment. complacency in fandom etiquette yes, but the main thing is JKR, and the complacency people have fallen into when it comes to her. when it comes to the tours, the merch, the REBOOT. there's a complacency.

and it's reached a point where,,, there isn't much to do about it.

because my account there has always been talkative - i started talking over there purely to talk about my thoughts and share my interests, and it gradually became more educational. which was fine when it started, but it's not anymore. it's not when it's no longer fun for me, and when it's turned from talking about fandom to defending my place in it. to educating people on why my life matters more than official HP content.

and most discourse? i'll talk about purely because i find it interesting, and then i'll move along. but i can't move along from the reboot and general jkr stuff because i'm trans outside of fandom as well as in it.

i can talk about how it feels to be trans in this fandom right now, and then i turn my phone off, and there's bills to pay. there's increasingly high hrt prices, there's routine blood tests that the nhs won't do for my heart condition, there's a road in my town i can't walk through because someone pulled a knife on me, there's law after law after law being debated, funded, and approved, there's opportunities i've been denied and necessities i've been denied because of my identity.

and i can't turn that off.

and it gets harder to separate the two. it gets harder to separate fandom and real life when i'm coming to a place that should be a form of escapism and hearing people talk about supporting JKR, so i counteract that and explain why we shouldn't, and then i'm directly impacted once the app is closed. i can't turn that off, and i can't feel right engaging in it.

and i think that's the sad thing. i know @sophsicle did a post on this recently, but once fandom and real life start mixing, it's so much harder to engage here because we are responsible. and i can't ethically (or healthily for myself) post about this fandom on tiktok when it's to blame for the complacency we're seeing. and it is to blame. it's the comments on fancasts videos, it's the promoting of jkr's universe in random comment sections just because people "look like" the marauders, it's the reposting of the reboot or official hp pages when they talk about marauders and it's so much more and it's just,,,, impossible.

and i sound like a broken record because for MONTHS i have been talking about this. for months i have been talking about the harm this will cause and a couple of months ago i said that if things don't start changing, you're going to see creators taking steps back.

I was watching SoC content on tiktok (as one does) and I came across a video and in the comment section of that video somebody said that El Tango De Roxanne is Kanej coded (like Kaz's pov of Inej's time in the Menagerie) and I was intrigued so I went and listened to it and oh my god.

If you want you can go ahead and listen to the song on Spotify so you can draw your own conclusion, but this is my conclusion ( I have basically postponed this post cuz I was shocked at how well this song fits with Kanej)

In this post I wanna focus on two lines from the whole song:

"You're free to leave

Just don't deceive me"

because they are the most Kanej thing I have ever heard

Basically, if we are looking at this song as Kaz's thoughts/pov of Inej's time in the Menagerie (wich it totally is) we are hearing Kaz's thoughts on Inej's time as a slave and basically showing that Kaz is aware how bad that year was for Inej and how bad Inej wants her freedom.

The "You're free to leave me" part shows that Kaz is willing to keep true to his words: "I'm not going to be another person who will mark her (Inej)" (I don't actually know if this is the quote, cuz I couldn't find it). This part is just Kaz saying that he is going to give her the independence she deserves and the means to reach that idependence telling her that she is free from Ketterdam's shady businesses. Free from him. He's trying to tell her that he won't blame her of she chooses to never come back

The next line "Just don't deceive me", is a cousin of sorts to the saying that keeps getting thrown around in the books and that (in my opinion) is very important in Kaz's and Inej's relationship: "Better harsh truths than kind lies". This line kinda reads to me as Kaz begging Inej to just tell him the truth. If she really is going to come back in Ketterdam and that she isn't just saying that and then she never does actually go back. Kaz doesn't want to keep waiting for her, hopefull that she will come back to him and then she never sets foot on Ketterdam's docks again. After all, hope is dangerous. He doesn't want to get his hopes up, he'd rather be told straight up that she hates him and hates that city rather then being told whatever kind lies Inej may come up with. Kaz loves Inej, that's a no brainer, but he will let her go if she says that she doesn't want anything to do with him.

If you ever heard the saying "If you love someone, let them go" then these lines are basically the same thing. Kaz lets Inej go, get her freedom back, not really expecting to ever see her again because he loves her. Yes, his feelings are hurt as hell (even tho he will never admit it), but Inej is happy and when you love someone you put their happiness in front of your own. Letting them go when you know they need to be let go, hopping and praying that they love you enough to come back.

While Kaz might say he's a demon, and while that's true in some cases, as we've seen in the books, his humanity isn't completely extinguished. Especially when it comes to Inej.

I think that the mauraders Fandom is annoying as hell sometimes. They act like the have a superiority over other hp fans cause they proudly state they throw cannon in the garbage. They flood every comment section that's not about them so they can talk about Mauraders which is weird considering that they have so much content they don't need more.

With remus it's crazy cause they treat fanon like its cannon and will talk about how he smokes cigarettes and wears doc martens as if he robbed sirius closet. They also refuse to admit remus does any wrong and treat it like a cardinal sin if you mention one of his cannon flaws.

we are annoying 😭 sometimes i get really bad secondhand embarrassment looking at comment sections of like a tiktok about fandom the marauders stans fill the damn thing up to the brim. the comments under a post being like, slightly critical of a characterisation are sometimes okay (provided it reaches the right audience) but if remus/sirius gets disliked? or james/regulus? the homophobia accusations are EVERYWHERE. then the tumblr complaints about “we don’t talk enough about this ship” or “we don’t talk enough about that character”, like they’ve never had the experience of enjoying a rarepair. i don’t frequent marauders twitter (if it all), but i know through the grapevine that it’s one of the worst.

the remus re-characterisation is so intriguing. a specific, really impressive fic that i have not read is partially “to blame” for this, though the author acknowledged that remus’ background was not canon compliant and the changes affected his character, but now it’s treated as canon and he’s snowballed into this cool, suave, snarky and disinterested ‘bad boy’-type who’s so tall he has to bend to fit through doorways and has lots of muscle under his temu t-shirt. i tend to make remus a smoker (mainly because smoking was common for many people in the 70s, 80s and 90s) but by god, that man is NOT cool.

he has many flaws in this characterisation (because he’s, simply put, a humongous and vile asshole to literally everybody, specifically his supposed soulmate sirius) but they’re not treated as flaws—just parts of his cool personality. they make him poc, partially for rep, but then they make him aggressive and harsh. i don’t see why he can’t be poc as well as a shy, fearful, tea-drinking and sweater-wearing dork whose flaws are mainly running away from “problems” and making up issues in his head that he’s terrified of coming true.

bringing up canon in anyway gets rebutted with a “we don’t care about canon because it’s sucks”. which is fine, really, but why are you in the fandom then? these characters (at least by name, and their parents, and their family background and their role in society and maybe their hogwarts house, house house, future deaths, which side of the war they were on, hints of their personality) were canonical. like, i can’t stress this enough—they’re part of canon. at least mentioned in them, sometimes only by last name but sometimes also by their entire name. hogwarts, the magic spells, diagon alley and knockturn alley and gringotts, the invisibility cloak, the families… voldemort and his death eaters, dumbledore and his order, the aurors, that’s ALL the potterverse. they think canon sucks but they still use it. please just… go to a different fandom, maybe? another one with a magic school and society?

You're all doing so SO GREAT. i'm already proud of you'll. This is a bad situation and going through it, we all do; but that means that we're gonna get out on the other side.

And don't ever punish or blame yourself. This isn't resting on your shoulder and it's not gonna change if something happens to you, the world just gonna be a much worse place without you in it.

So please do try to take care of youself. It Matters. And if you don't think that it would matter to anyone; IT WOULD.

It would matter to me, at the very least. And the world is full with kind and caring and compassionate people, please try talk to them. It doesn't matter where or what it's not worse because that someone is on the internet.
