Not several random ass people starting to come at me on the hellsite of Twitter because I want Palestine to be free, and because I support "blackwashing" lmao
Blackwashing isn't even a real thing first of all.. That word was most likely created by racist white supremacists. Like it's ok to blackwash is it not? You're bringing more diversity to certain characters.. Whitewashing however is a huge problem 😭
...Like wtf do you mean whitewashing and blackwashing are the same thing no tf they ain't...

I'm not explaining why re-imagining characters as POC is not the same as white-washing, here of all places should fucking understand.
#personal#delete later#no patrick. “black washing” is not as harmful as white washing.#come on guys get it together#seeing people in my reblogs talk about “reverse racism” and double standards is genuinely hypocrisy#say it with me: white washing is intrinsically tied to a historical and systematic erasure of poc figures literature and history.#it is an inherently destructive act that deplatforms underrepresented faces and voices#in favor of a light-skinned aesthetic hegemony#redesigning characters as poc is an act of dismantling symbols of whiteness in fiction in favor of diversification and reclamation#(note that i am talking about individual acts by individual artists as was the topic of this discourse. not on an industry-scale)#redesigning characters as poc is not tied to hundreds of years of systemic racism and abuse and power dynamics. that is a fact.#you are not replacing an underrepresented person with an oft-represented person. it is the opposite#if you feel threatened or upset or uncomfortable about this then sorry but you are not aware of how much more worse it is for poc#if representation is unequal then these acts cannot be equivalent. you can't point to an imbalanced scale and say they weigh the same#if you recognize that bipoc people are minorities then you should recognize that these two things are not the same#while i agree that “black washing” can lead to color-blind casting and writing the behavior here is on an individual level#a black artist drawing their favorite anime character as black because they feel a shared solidarity is not a threat to you#i mean. most anime characters are east asian and i as an east asian person certainly don't feel threatened or erased. neither should you.#there's much to be said about the politics of blackwashing (i don't even know if that's the right word for it)#but point standing. whitewashing is an inherently more destructive act. both through its history of maintaining power dynamics#and the simple fact that it's taking away from groups of people who have less to begin with#if you feel upset or uncomfortable about a fictional white character being redesigned as poc by an artist on twitter#i sincerely hope you're able to explore these feelings and find avenues to empathizing with poc who have had their figures#(both real and fictional) erased; buried; and replaced by white figures for hundreds of years#i sincerely hope you can understand the difference in motivations and connotations behind whitewashing and blackwashing#classic bixels “i'm not talking about this chat. i'm not” (puts my media studies major to use in the tags and talks the fuck outta it)

Not to continue whining but I already know that people are gonna complain more about the POC edits that will come out (fucking ""blackwashing"") then the blatant racism in the game and then pretend that they're still allies.
"well it's wrong to change any character's skin tone—" maybe focus on the multibillion corporation pandering to racists instead of singular artists making edits of fictional characters.

Hey, can someone please explain the Netflix Cleopatra drama?
I understand the reasons that Egypt is suing Netflix over this, but outside of Egypt, the reaction to this is just really confusing me????
As a white (non-Muslim) person, I’m having a really hard time wrapping my head around the idea of “blackwashing”. I live in the US so I’m assuming that has something to do with my perception of the issue?
Here are my questions:
Skin color isn’t exclusive to country??? There were obviously brown Greek people even in ancient Greek, even if it wasn’t a large portion of the population????
Do we concretely know what Cleopatra looked like? I know that there’s art of Cleopatra, but I also know that a lot of that was/is viewed from a white, and male perspective so is this a “the victors write history” situation?
Is the backlash over the casting (and I know it’s not just from Egypt, this is coming from many people and many places) really about skin color or is it about something else? If so, what else?
Like I legit want to know and understand as this situation is so confusing to me? Like, if everything else is accurate, then let the show be????
If anyone is able to give some insight or point to (non-biased) resources I can peruse I’d be extremely grateful! ^^

Just found some wild race wars in YouTube comments about how anime characters being drawn in African american styles is racist and blackwashing.
I dont know what to say or how i feel about it. Is it really wrong to draw a light skinned character black? For instance, black deku?
Is that bad? (Yes or no)

why can't u just creature ur own black characters instead of race bending them. isn't it like if u made black characters white/Asian
because... becau- BECAUSE BECAUSEEEE
Tumblr media
LOLLLL nah but in all seriousness, i drew this last october to participate in the blacktober prompt. i know sae isn't black of course-- most of the characters from blue lock are asian or european, which is cool !!! but..
if artists can draw shidou with the lightest skin EVER knowing damn well he's tanned and has undoubtedly brown skin, i can reimagine a few blue lock characters as black for an event that is meant to uplift black creators and celebrate blackness in a medium (art, manga, comics, whatever) where we lack proper representation
sae is a character i love soooo much so i drew the art of him as a request on twitter for blacktober. even if he wasnt requested, i still wouldn't have drawn any of the canon black characters like dada silva or agi because i'm just not interested in the black characters kaneshiro writes (aside from loki). all the black characters in blue lock are only there briefly so when there isn't any good, prominent representation of black characters, i'll just draw the ones i like as black.
if you want a more in-depth response on where i stand on the "why is drawing black people as white not ok but drawing white/asian people as black is ok" aka the "blackwashing" debate, read this article. but also if u dont like my black blue lock character art idk sorry (not really) but i'm pretty sure the block button isn't that hard to find so
