I haven't felt very motivated to draw lately (what chronic fatigue does to a guy 😔) but I have cracked open my sketchbook a few times. Mostly to doodle TBC.

I see Blackstar a guy who was born to be a yes-man and forced to be a leader. He thought he would live and die as deputy to Brokenstar, and then to Tigerstar. He saw them as great and powerful leaders who he could serve with his strength his whole life and then retire to StarClan when he inevitably fell in battle gloriously fighting for ShadowClan. He didn't mind fighting and even killing at his leaders' orders: he did what he was told, and he did it well. His life would be simple and straightforward as his leader's most-trusted enforcer. And then, whoops, that all fell apart, now he has to lead.

Leading in the Old Forest is okay: he knows how things work there, same as they always had, for the most part. But then they have to move to somewhere different, and he really, actually has to start making decisions. Real decisions with immediate consequences and implications for how his clan might live for seasons upon seasons to come, even past his own lives. So of course it eventually becomes too much, and as he grows old and loses more of his lives, he has his Power of Three era breakdown. Sol finds him in this state and is able to give him exactly what he needs: a cat that speaks confidently and tells him what to do.

Near the end of his last life, he feels regret for, in his opinion, failing to provide ShadowClan with strong leadership. He talks little of his successes and much of his mistakes to Rowanclaw in his last moons (precipitating an unfortunately ill-fated overcorrection from Rowanstar). He doesn't think much about the things he did in service to Brokenstar and Tigerstar. He had never been meant to think about them, just to follow his leader's orders and do them. He dies firmly believing that he lived his life according to the Warrior Code. If amends are to be made with any cat he met in life, he will make them in StarClan.

Cole Blackstar is such a funny character to me. He gets introduced as this brooding dark warrior, he doesn't talk to anyone, he's just standing there in the corner while his dad is like, "yeah I brought my son to help you guys out." Note that he didn't bring him to train, but to help fill the hole when Victor leaves. So, "oh! This guy thinks he's fully got it, oh no." I was sure we were gonna have a jealous side plot or this guy was gonna have to learn to be nice.

Second scene with him (totally unafraid of Helmet btw) and he's jumping to save people. "Have we got a problem?" "Um, yes actually." Amazing, hilarious, I wasn't expecting it at all.

The more the story goes along the more you realize that Cole is this fully leveled sidekick support character. He's not even a brooding kind of guy, he's quite pleasant and cracks jokes even! I kinda lost it when he said, "Oof" once. That was his honest reaction to his friend telling him about his hardships.

Do you think when Victor went to Cloud Mountain for the meeting in the first book that he left Cole in charge of the citadel?

I think it's sad how little time Cole and Picket actually spend together. Have they hung out since the second book when they first met? Do they actually know each other? Are they just war buddies? Is Jo gonna casually say something about Picket and leave Cole like, "he what now?"

Anyway I think we should talk about Cole more. Underrated character.

If I could change one aspect of Blackfoot/Blackstar's character, it would be his appearance and original name. He's now a seal colorpoint and his birth name was Flurrykit. Flurry- for his white kitten coat and also a pointed jab at Blizzardwing for not claiming the litter as his own.

As Flurrypaw grows, his pelt goes from being snowy white to brown and black. He hates his name, feeling like he looks more like rotten snow in spring than a crisp winter cloud. To add salt to the wound, he also learns that Blizzardwing is his father and namesake. Angered, Flurrypaw goes to Raggedstar and explains his plight. Raggedstar sympathizes with him, revealing that he knows better than any cat how it feels to have a horrible father. Something must be done.

At his warrior ceremony, Raggedstar christens him as Blackfoot. A fine name for a fine young cat, and Brokenpaw's loyal friend.

seeing a Bear Gay BlackStar headcanon gets me excited until I remember that nearly everyone equates Bears to being muscular dudes with a bit of a gut or any stocky guy

I want to get this Hero Forge printed for my fellow players 😭the other OTP of the party: Paladin Phoebe Blackstar and Blood Hunter Sterling.

Phoebe became Argynvost’s champion so she has these cool little wings now. I wanted to show off Sterling’s lycanthropy by giving her fuzzy feet but my husband said it looks weird 😭🫡 I kinda wanna keep it tho LOL

When people say Onestar's arc was bad or made no sense I'm always like ??? Did you even read?! Half of his clan wanted to assassinate him, of course he would turn on Thunderclan. It was his perceived alliance and subservience to them that fueled the ire that almost killed him.

Though I will say, I barely consider Darktail his son. Like yeah in canon he is, but in my mind he was Blackstar's. I just feel it works better

I will say as someone who disliked the turn of events initially, I understand where it comes from. It's always really nice when cats don't start screaming at each other over piss lines and have friends, I really liked Onewhisker and Fireheart's friendship. It felt like a breath of relief compared to every other cat getting ready to beat the shit out of each other on sight. So from a perspective of disappointment, I get it. I have definitely come around to appreciating Onestar now!

Big agree! I disagree with notion it came out of nowhere or was bad writing, he's one of the few characters who has decent motivations for being so hostile to others. There's something really interesting about the same cats you once shared a den with, hunted with, and fought alongside now trying to stab you in the back. Also really interesting that he ultimately pardons the cats who took part in the coup. Something so...interesting, I love it.

Darktail as a Sol/Blackstar baby lol but that would've been cool! Legacy of the old leaders still impacting the Clans. Truthfully though, I don't think there's any Darktail lineage AU I've ever gotten super into unfortunately.

What is a rarepair you have that's really just a crackship or goofy ship for you, no stakes on canon or anything, merely vibes... and then what's a rarepair that you will die on the hill for, should be canon, so obvious everyone else is blind, type of ship.
