Ask A Genius 1241: I have no idea, also aging
Scott Douglas Jacobsen: Here’s a topic. If you’re on Facebook and you like those zit-popping clips from Instagram or wherever, try searching for farrier or blacksmith recovery videos. They take out nails and rocks embedded in horse hooves. Sometimes, the hoof grows around the rock; they dig it out, and there’s pus and blood. Rick Rosner: As much as I like popping my zits, I’ve never watched a…

Ninjago Team Medic Headcanons
Wu gave them all basic first aid training, and later taught them some more advanced techniques, but I think everyone has their own specialties.
Kai - Kai treats the serious injuries. He’s the only one who can cauterize wounds, if needed. But other times, he can splint broken or sprained limbs with ease. Kai is the closest thing the ninja have to an official medic. His protectiveness led to many sleepless nights watching videos ranging from treating muscle soreness, to burns, to CPR, to live surgeries.
Jay - Good at treating injuries during missions, but is prone to… unorthodox methods. If you need something dealt with fast, he is the guy. Accidents in the junkyard and his time on the Misfortune’s Keep taught him how to quickly patch up anything out of almost any material. His methods of sloppy stitches, makeshift bandaging, or increasingly strange ways to prevent infections are temporary solutions, but they’ll keep you alive long enough to get real help. He’s always got fun bandaids stashed somewhere. But in terms of moral support, he’s your guy. Jay is a master of distraction, keeping the others either chuckling or groaning with his jokes while he or someone else works. When he gets very stressed, however, he’ll be dead silent as he treats the wound, looking on with a clenched jaw.
Nya - Nya is the best of everyone at traditional first aid. Before she was a ninja, she did a lot of the patching up after missions, so she’s got lots of experience. Nya is also so good at treating burns that it’s like her second elemental power; back in the day, her inexperienced brother had many blacksmithing accidents in the forge. It’s been established that she can’t access water inside of people’s bodies (cough, water in Jay’s lungs, cough), but if the blood is outside of you… It’s not quite bloodbending, but she can keep her team from bleeding out. She is also helpful during times of rest and recovery, keeping everyone drinking plenty of fluids and threatening them to take it easy. She’s an expert in heatstroke and dehydration because her stupid ninja forget to drink water on a daily basis.
Cole - Cole’s big hands and strength make it difficult for him to treat delicate injuries like stitching someone up, but if you need a joint popped back into place or a broken bone set, he is absolutely your guy. Most of what Cole provides to his team’s wellbeing is emotional. He gives the best hugs. Kai and Jay utilize his calming presence when dealing with more… tricky wounds. Also: as mud is nature’s sunblock, he’s always happy to provide some to prevent his team from getting burned when they inevitably forget sunblock.
Lloyd - Lloyd still believes in the magic power of bandages. For himself, and for others. Over the years he’s gotten better at recognizing when to use them and when more serious medical attention is required, but he’d still prefer not to have to deal with his injured team. In a situation where someone gets badly injured, usually Lloyd has many different problems to deal with and the other ninja are happy to take things off his plate instead of making him deal with a downed teammate. When it is up to him, he’s no medical expert by any means, but he’ll try his best. Occasionally, he’ll have to use his powers to combat some sort of magical ailment.
Zane - Do NOT try and get Zane’s help with an injury. You think his ability to access any and all medical knowledge would be useful? WRONG. The guy sees one of his friends injured and practically shuts down. Dislocated joints? Broken bones? Heck no, he needs to leave the room. Catches a glimpse of blood? He is gone. Poor guy once almost started crying when Lloyd got a bloody nose. The whole situation is a mix of him hating to see his loved ones injured, and also being queasy over blood because he doesn’t have any. All those body parts that he doesn’t have are GROSS. The only thing he’s able to help with is diagnosing illnesses and occasionally pointing out concussions. Even then, it gets out of hand (“You have a mild cough? MY SOURCES SAY YOU HAVE FIVE DAYS TO LIVE.”) After treatment, however, he’s always ready to provide an instant ice pack and physical therapy.
Pixal - Pixal is eager to help. Do not let her help. Her solution to almost everything-- whether it be a skinned knee or fractured wrist-- is amputation. She has spent years building so many backup prosthetics and just wants to be useful (“please let me implement my prosthetics, Kai, please! Lloyd would look so good with a robot arm!’). She knows hundreds of different options but she feels more comfortable working on machines, so what’s her solution? Cut it off, install a machine. That she can work with. Luckily, the ninja deal with both of the nindroids by having Zane keep her away, successfully distracting both of them from bloody situations.

Enrollment drops worry public schools as pandemic persists (AP) Rather than wait to see how her children’s Florida public school would teach students this fall, Erica Chao enrolled her two daughters in a private school that seemed better positioned to provide instruction online during the uncertainty of the coronavirus pandemic. The virtual lessons that Emily, 8, and Annabelle, 6, received in the spring while enrolled at a Miami-Dade County elementary school became a “free for all,” Chao said. The private school classes, by contrast, hold the girls’ attention, and their mother no longer worries they will fall behind if she doesn’t attend school with them at home. “For the first time since March, I was able to walk away,” Chao said. Parents across the country have faced similar choices about whether to keep their children in public schools as the pandemic extends into a new academic year. Some opted for private or charter schools. Others are dedicating themselves to homeschooling, hiring tutors to oversee multi-family “learning pods” or struggling to balance their children’s educations with work when school times and technology keep changing. Such personal decisions could exacerbate the financial problems of public school systems that receive a set amount of state funding for every student they enroll, which are the vast majority. With preliminary figures showing unexpected enrollment declines in many places, school officials used letters, phone calls and volunteers going door-to-door to persuade parents to register their youngsters before this month’s fall student census.
With Americans anxious to go out, walking tours pick up pace (AP) With an eerily quiet and empty stadium plaza behind him, the tour guide tried to help people picture what they would have seen there more than 160 years earlier. His audience of eight, all on foot, peered over masks at maps as he described hundreds of groceries, saloons, blacksmiths and 100,000 people living across two square miles—one of the pre-Civil War United States’ most congested areas. For so many Americans, this is a time of being cooped up, of being unable to interact with fellow humans and, in many cases, with the landscape itself. COVID-19 and its impact have kept many away from air travel, cruise ships and crowded beaches. Enter a decidedly unplugged alternative, a very concrete antidote to a suddenly more virtual life: the walking tour. Maybe not the most exciting outlet, but far better than being surrounded by the same four walls. “Our mental health matters also, and it’s very important for us ... when we’re really feeling extremely alienated from each other and feeling trapped in our homes, to walk our streets, in the safest way possible,” said Rebecca Manski of Social Justice Tours in New York City. Such tours have picked up in popularity for people seeking outdoor social activity while maintaining health safety precautions and staying in small groups.
With whipping winds, Delta drenches Louisiana, Mississippi (AP) Ripping tarps from already damaged roofs and scattering debris piled by roadsides, Delta inflicted a new round of destruction on Louisiana as it struck communities still reeling after Hurricane Laura took a similar path just six weeks earlier. Delta hit as a Category 2 hurricane, with top winds of 100 mph (155 kph) but rapidly grew weaker. By Saturday morning, it dwindled to a tropical storm with 45 mph (75 kph) winds. Still, forecasters warned of danger from storm surge and flash floods across much of southwestern Louisiana and parts of neighboring Texas. Mississippi also got its fair share of rain overnight.
Fishy idea (Foreign Policy) As the United Kingdom tries to beat a path out of the European Union, demanding a significant increase in fishing rights as it leaves the bloc’s common fisheries policy, Belgium’s Ambassador to the European Union Willem van de Voorde made an unlikely invocation on Wednesday: a charter signed in 1666 by King Charles II granting 50 fishermen from Bruges “eternal rights” to fish in England’s waters. It’s not unprecedented for centuries-old documents to play a role in British diplomacy today; the Anglo-Portuguese alliance of 1373 still stands and was invoked during the Falklands War. Although unlikely to sway the negotiations, the ambassador’s intervention underscores how fraught discussions over fishing rights have become.
Europe’s Economic Recovery Is a Summer Memory (NYT) What faint hopes remained that Europe was recovering from the economic catastrophe delivered by the pandemic have disappeared as the lethal virus has resumed spreading rapidly across much of the continent. After sharply expanding in the early part of the summer, Britain’s economy grew far less than anticipated in August—just 2.1 percent compared with July, the government reported on Friday, adding to worries that further weakness lies ahead. Earlier in the week, France, Europe’s second-largest economy, downgraded its forecast for the pace of expansion for the last three months of the year from an already minimal 1 percent to zero. Over all, the national statistics agency predicted the economy would contract by 9 percent this year. The diminished expectations are a direct outgrowth of alarm over the revival of the virus. France reported nearly 19,000 new cases on Wednesday—a one-day record, and almost double the number the day before. The surge prompted President Emmanuel Macron to announce new restrictions, including a two-month shutdown of cafes and bars in Paris and surrounding areas. In Spain, the central bank governor warned this week that the accelerating spread of the virus could force the government to impose restrictions that would produce an economic contraction of as much as 12.6 percent this year. The European Central Bank’s chief economist cautioned on Tuesday that the 19 countries that share the euro currency might not recover from the disaster until 2022. Summer increasingly feels like a long time ago.
North Korea parades huge, new ICBM, but Kim Jong Un stresses deterrent nature (Washington Post) North Korea showed off what appeared to be a huge, new inter-continental ballistic missile at a military parade Saturday, although leader Kim Jong Un stressed the deterrent nature of the weaponry on display—and even held out an olive branch to neighbor South Korea. The military parade, marking the 75th anniversary of the ruling Workers’ Party, featured a vast array of modernized military systems, from small arms through antitank and air- defense systems. The most closely watched, however, was what looked to be four huge, new liquid-fueled ICBMs, rolling through the main square in Pyongyang on 11-axle vehicles. Military experts—monitoring the parade through North Korean state television—said the new missile would be one of the largest road-mobile ICBMs in the world if it becomes operational, and could represent the threatened new “strategic weapon” Kim had talked of at the start of this year. For the international community, Kim’s message was: North Korea was a military force to be reckoned with, but not a threat.
Azerbaijan and Armenia Agree to Cease-Fire in Nagorno-Karabakh (NYT) Azerbaijan and Armenia negotiated a limited cease-fire early Saturday after almost two weeks of fierce fighting over a disputed province, with the goal of pausing combat long enough to collect bodies from the battlefield and to exchange prisoners. The Russian-brokered agreement, which takes effect at noon on Saturday, was short on specifics. The issue of the how the cease-fire would play out on the front lines was left to the sides to agree to in “additional” talks. People fleeing the fighting on Friday described the violence as more intense than what took place during the yearslong war between Armenia and Azerbaijan in the early 1990s that killed some 20,000 people and displaced about a million, mostly Azerbaijanis.
Clashes erupt between ultra-Orthodox and police, youth set fire to city (Jerusalem Post) Clashes broke out between police and dozens of ultra-Orthodox people late Thursday night in Modi’in Illit as a gathering was held in a synagogue in violation of coronavirus and lockdown regulations, Walla reported. Several ultra-Orthodox were arrested, and youth set aflame trees and vegetation throughout the city in outcry. A video of the scene shows dozens of ultra-Orthodox people in clashes with the police as violence erupts among the crowd, and the congregants yell “shame on you,” at the police.
Nigerian protesters demand end of an anti-robbery police unit that robs people (Washington Post) The police officers accused him of speeding, but Dare Olaitan felt that wasn’t true. The 29-year-old filmmaker in Nigeria’s biggest city, Lagos, recalls requesting proof. “Then they slapped me, yanked away my phone and keys and said, ‘We are going to an ATM,” Olaitan said. The men, who’d pulled him over in an unmarked van, identified themselves as part of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad, or SARS, a Nigerian police unit that has been tasked over the last three decades with fighting violent crime, including banditry and kidnapping. Similar tales blazed across social media in recent days as thousands of protesters filled the streets in several Nigerian cities, urging the leaders of Africa’s most populous nation to disband the squad, which they say routinely commits the kind of crimes it is supposed to thwart. Human rights activists have campaigned against SARS for years, but violent videos that surfaced online this week shoved a fresh spotlight on what demonstrators condemned as police brutality. A number of Nigerian celebrities took up the cause, helping #EndSARS go massively viral. As pressure mounted, Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari vowed Friday to investigate the squad.

Day 93 of COVID-19 shelter-in-place
Medical procedure, friend visit, and comfort-watching!
I was extremely anxious about today’s medical procedure. I had trouble sleeping last night, even though I went to bed earlier than usual; I got up at 5am. We left by 6:25ish, and encountered unexpected traffic getting onto the bridge. My appointment was at a different medical center run by the same university, and we hadn’t been there before, but we found it okay and only a couple minutes late.
I was taken into the pre-op room and given a lavender paper gown that turned out to be inflatable with warm air (!) and a pair of yellow nonslip socks. Both gown and socks were one-size-fits-all, so absurdly large on me.
The first nurse took my vital signs and then tried to put the IV in my forearm, but this was excruciatingly painful and ultimately unsuccessful, so he just put it in the vein that’s easy to access on the inside of my elbow. That was only slightly painful. But there’s a large, swollen, black-and-blue bruise where he originally tried, and even the successful one ended up looking a bit irritated.
Then I basically had to sit there and wait for about an hour or so feeling hungry, thirsty, and anxious. Wife and I exchanged a few texts during that time and I tried to stay calm. She had brought her portable video game console to keep her occupied while I was having my procedure done, and apparently the staff initially seemed unconvinced that she was the responsible adult who would be driving me home! I think maybe it’s harder to gauge someone’s age with a mask on, and she has a slightly androgynous look which, combined with the video games, made them assume that she was a teenage boy?!
Finally the doctor came in, with a resident and soon joined by a medical student and then the anaesthesiologist (all women), plus another male nurse. We discussed the plan and they agreed to try twilight sedation and only escalate to general anaesthesia if necessary (spoiler: it was not necessary). Then they started wheeling me into the operating room. I remember that when they got me there (having already started the sedative drip) and were trying to get me positioned correctly, there were at least 6 people in there getting things ready and bustling around me, and two large disks of lights.
The next thing I remember, mercifully, is waking up in a private (ish) recovery room, more relaxed than I’d been all week. There weren’t any incisions involved in this procedure and I was hardly in any pain; they gave me a warm compress while I waited to be discharged, and brought me water. It might have been a third male nurse? Unless it was the second one again. The doctors had gone out and spoken to Wife to let her know that the procedure had gone smoothly. At some point they decided I could go (I don’t really remember how long that took; maybe they just needed to take my vital signs again and detach my IV?). They filled my water bottle for me and gave me a couple of juice boxes to take with me when I left to drink in the car. I was taken to the car in a wheelchair around 11am.
I expect to get results in about 3 weeks, but as far as I’m concerned, this was a success. My goal was to get through this morning and not remember the procedure. I have basically felt fine all afternoon--not even woozy or tired.
We came home and I ate breakfast (I had snacked in the car) while Wife ate lunch. A high school friend who is in town from Los Angeles for her son to go to a blacksmithing and archery day camp (!?) came to visit for a couple hours of sitting in the garden and chatting. I was so incredibly happy to see her, though also very sad not to be able to hug her. She also brought me a cloth mask with kitties on it, as well as a bouquet of some fun, thistle-y looking flowers!
The gardeners came and dug up my plants from the driveway side of the house and transplanted them into pots. I hope I can keep them alive for a month or so that way while work is being done on my foundation!
I had a late lunch and then settled down to watch the Shotgun Players’ recording of a performance of Arcadia from last year. You may recall that I loved that production so much, I went back to see it 9 times. It is my favorite play, and this was an excellent production of it. The recording isn’t perfect; some of the audio is a little quiet, and the camera is occasionally out of focus. But it doesn’t matter. At least for me, having seen it multiple times, this took me right back. Two-thirds of the proceeds from the sliding scale fee for watching it are being divided amongst the artists involved. It’s available for the next few days from the Shotgun Players’ website until 26 June 2020, under Watch Online -> Art in the Time of Coronavirus.
Wife picked up some enchiladas for me for dinner. Yay enchiladas!

Considerations for Starting an Environmental Stewardship Program for Your Firing Range
MT2.com | Firing Range Lead Reclamation & Environmental Remediation Services - #1 and Largest Nationwide Professional Environmental Soil Remediation & Firing Range Lead Reclamation Maintenance Contractor for both Indoor & Outdoor Firing Ranges
Hello! Outdoor firing range here. So, you want to protect me from the dangerous effects of lead contamination? Good move! Protecting me protects YOU! I don’t want to poison you, but leaving spent bullets behind can cause potentially toxic lead to leech into the ground or otherwise leave me. The lead may contaminate my soil and my water. This may impact my wildlife and humans too, or impact my neighbors. You can possibly get an acute (sudden) toxic dose of lead or suffer permanent health effects over time. The thing is, it doesn’t have to be this way because lead poisoning is preventable! To stay safe, you must clean me up and keep me clean. To do this, you need a responsible, ongoing management plan also known as an Environmental Stewardship Program (ESP). I’ve compiled some basic information to get your started!
Throughout the last 20 years, we have begun to see the effects of mass pollution all around us. Poisonous waterways, species extinction, and new forming health problems are arising from human caused pollution in the natural environment.
Environmental Stewardship Program (ESP) involves taking the necessary steps in removing and reducing waste, pollution, and any occupational health and safety hazard that may be present in order to protect everyone and the environment around us. One area of human activity that needs improving is the potential lead contamination at firing ranges. According to the National Shooting Sports Foundation, lead can be a harmful metal if inhaled or ingested. An interesting fact is that lead is found in ammunition, used in the primer. When a bullet is discharged from a gun, heat is created. This converts the lead from a solid to airborne particles that can be breathed in, entering the lungs to be absorbed into the bloodstream. After continuous exposure, lead poisoning is a risk. Another place lead accumulates in your firing range is at backstops. Everyone should consider proper monitoring and maintenance at both indoor and outdoor firing ranges, and don’t worry, learning how to set up easy protocols is very simple.
An ESP can give you the guidelines for protection you need to keep everyone safe and help the environment in return. The benefits to consider when deciding whether this pertains to you include the following.
What lead preventative measures can you establish to benefit your employees and customers? The National Shooting Sports Foundation lists several improvements OSHA recommends and requires for lead control in indoor shooting facilities. They include airborne lead monitoring, ventilation, bullet traps, non-lead ammunition, regular cleaning, training, proper protective clothing, and respirators.
Can you implement conservation efforts to help lead pollution at you firing range? Taking on the task of monitoring the soil in an outdoor shooting range can be a drastic conservation effort. The accumulation of lead can leach into the soil and eventually end up in a water source. The EPA limit of lead contamination in soil is 5 mg/L according to a Princeton publication. If the tested soil results higher than 5, treatment methods should be put into place.
What are the economic benefits involved in a ESP? The economic benefit of reducing lead poisoning is your health. A study from the Blacksmith Institute showed that 2.8% of heath care costs in the United States is contributed to environmental exposure of pollutants, such as lead. For more information relating to general OSHA lead regulations, click here.
It is much simpler and less expensive to commit to environmental awareness and employ conservation measures before you are sanctioned.
Proactive conservation is easier and more economical than clean-up after contamination; known as remediation. It is much less complex and less expensive to achieve and maintain voluntary regulatory compliance before you are penalized and forced to comply. Did you know the EPA has a list of fugitives? I know, right? I didn’t either! It makes sense! There are laws to protect our environment. I guess we’d better get started! First,
Bone up! Begin your lead education with reliable resources, such as Centers for Disease Control (CDC) publications and tools, to deepen understanding about the potential dangers of lead; ways to reduce and monitor lead exposure; and lead remediation.
Everyone can be educated about lead. Many of these teaching tools I found are reproducible and free!
Work with the experts! The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has an easy-to-read manual entitled, “Best Management Practices for Lead Outdoor Shooting Ranges“. You can print it or order as many copies as you need for free! The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) offers a voluntary, on-site consultation program to help you understand site-specific compliance and avoid sanctions.
Also…be sure any contractors/engineers you employ have valid, appropriate certifications!
Get creative! Recycling or reusing spent lead may help the range from many of the more stringent solid waste restrictions of the EPA’s Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). Search for funding in creative ways. The EPA offers grants for lead cleanup that may help.
Keep track! Keep records of your progress; including the money you save by recycling or reusing lead. Awards and recognition do more than feel good; they are tangible evidence of effective management and send a clear message that you care about your employees, taxpayers, and the environment.
How to Properly Set Up an Environmental Stewardship Program (ESP) For Your Firing Range
The EPA defines environmental stewardship as “the responsibility for environmental quality shared by all those whose actions affect the environment”. Because the earth is a finite resource, and many of the things we do can contaminate it, protecting both the environment and our fellow humans who live here is an important task.
Why Is an ESP Important for A Firing Range?
Firing ranges are in a unique place to be environmental stewards, largely because of huge potential for lead pollution that go hand in hand with ranges. “An environmental stewardship program is a written plan or “roadmap” for planning, implementing and monitoring the progress of environmental improvements at shooting ranges,” according to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. This holds true for other states as well. This plan would include proper characterization of your site, as well as implementing various management techniques.
Site Characterization
To properly set up an ESP, several things must be taken into consideration. These include:
physical characteristics of the shooting range;
soil characteristics;
both yearly rainfall and the potential for erosion;
lay of the land, which impacts water run-off;
both ground and surface water;
surrounding vegetation;
potential risks to wildlife, their habitats, and feeding;
and proximity to neighbors.
Management Techniques
Properly managing a firing range can make environmental stewardship easy. The following management techniques should be employed for a successful ESP:
bullet containment;
BMPs to prevent lead migration;
lead removal;
lead recycling;
record keeping;
wildlife management;
human lead exposure standards;
and remediation efforts.

These include:
physical characteristics of the shooting range;
soil characteristics;
both yearly rainfall and the potential for erosion;
lay of the land, which impacts water run-off;
both ground and surface water;
surrounding vegetation;
potential risks to wildlife, their habitats, and feeding;
and proximity to neighbors.
Management Techniques
Properly managing a firing range can make environmental stewardship easy. The following management techniques should be employed for a successful ESP:
bullet containment;
BMPs to prevent lead migration;
lead removal;
lead recycling;
record keeping;
wildlife management;
human lead exposure standards;
and remediation efforts.

Salt Lake Rotary Cluster Meetings April 18, 2017
Pay a visit to one of our fellow Rotarians and learn about how they spend their time away from Rotary. It’s a great opportunity to see some of the businesses and organizations that support Rotary. YOU MUST RESERVE YOUR PLACE by emailing [email protected], by calling Brett at 801-994-9944 x158, or by speaking with him at a luncheon.  Hurry, spots can go quickly!  RSVP by April 12.
America First Credit Union, Randi Jackson, host
The Innovation Center is an entirely new banking experience. Designed to be part branch, part learning workshop, and part tech playground, it's a unique space where America First members, along with the rest of the community, can get hands-on access to relevant, state-of-the-art technology and financial systems, learn about new tools and opportunities within the credit union and community, and give real-time feedback about what kind of experience they want to have with the credit union in the future.
The first thing that you'll probably notice is that the Innovation Center isn't like the other America First branches you're used to. It's been built not only to showcase cutting-edge hardware and tools, but to let you experiment with them. Of course, you can still make withdrawals and deposits, apply for loans and other services, meet with experts to discuss your financial plans and choices, and anything else you can do at a traditional branch. You'll just be doing all of that in a whole new way.
Ronald McDonald House Charities, Carrie Romano, host
Please join us for a cluster meeting hosted by Carrie Romano, CEO for Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Intermountain Area.  Rotarians will enjoy a delicious lunch from Canella’s and tour the beautiful and newly expanded Ronald McDonald House conveniently located at 935 E. Peak Alarm, Don Weakley, host
Jerry Howe, owner of Peak Alarm, has an on-site museum of alarm industry equipment that dates back to the late 1800s. It is probably in the top five collections in the US. We will give a tour of the museum and explain how the industry started before the phone companies and how the phone company piggybacked on the establish network of the Alarm Industry. Attendees will also take a tour of our Peak Audio Video and our UL Central Station which there are only three of in the state. We intend on having a Hawaiian Luau, with a roasted pig, teriyaki chicken and authentic Hawaiian dancers.
American Red Cross,  Heidi Ruster
Join us at the American Red Cross to get a quick overview of our core services of Disaster Preparedness, Response and Recovery; Service to the Armed Forces, Health and Safety, International Services, and Biomedical Services. We will focus our time on Biomedical/Blood services with the expertise of our Medical Director, Dr. Walter Kelley and a blood recipient/donor. We will have an opportunity for you to tour the facility and donate blood if you have time after the presentation. Thanks for joining us and we will have a wonderful Italian meal to top off the experience!
Tracy Aviary,  Tim Brown
This won't be another rubber chicken lunch! Join us at Tracy Aviary and learn about the $30,000,000 renovation efforts that have transformed this cultural asset into one of Salt Lake's finest gems. Regardless of whether the weather is foul, we'll see fowl up close and personal wandering through exhibits including the new indoor Treasures of the Rainforest and the Kennecott Wetlands. In addition to a no-bird lunch, you will learn how and why Tracy Aviary connects people to nature through innovative education programs and citizen science conservation projects. To top off the program, we'll offer some nose-to-beak experiences, so have your cameras ready.

Poised to elevate to an Honors College next year, this distinctive program is preparing students to solve problems, effectively work in diverse groups, and confidently lead our businesses, government agencies and community organizations. One day, you might hire one of these outstanding students. Or, you might find your business competing with theirs. Please come and meet these outstanding students and the Honors Program Director who is guiding them into our collective future.
Legacy Books and Riverton Legacy Home,  John Catron
Let John Catron host you at his historic home in southern Salt Lake Valley, just five minutes from I-15. In 2007 he and his wife, Barbara, began restoring Riverton's first church and schoolhouse, and then added onto it their beautiful southern-style estate home. Take a tour of the grounds and home to learn some of the efforts they put forth in preserving the heritage of the many people who can trace their ancestors through the schoolhouse which has been a church, a meeting place, a dance hall, a post office, a blacksmith shop, and a home over the last 137 years. John is dedicated to preserve the stories of our past, and you'll see how closely the effort to remember early Riverton ties in with his company, Legacy Books, and their desire to save family, community, and corporate legacies. We'd love to have you over.
