I really wanted to give blackout poetry a go (or should I say redout, as I only had a red pen), and really enjoyed it! I accidentally bought two copies of #memoirsofageisha (great book, who wouldn’t) and thought the second one would be great to give this form of poetry a try. Think of all the interesting words there would be! Partner-san and I then discussed this one that I did: Suppose you were to say the truth is a kind of perfume. He said, “But perfume can wear off over time.” But can’t the effects of truth, in a way? We all find ourselves missing or forgetting important truths in life. Then he said, “But not everyone likes all perfumes.” I looked at him and his face widened as if something had dawned upon him. I said, “But not all people can like or accept different truths, either.” So, mission accomplished. My first “redout” poem sparked conversation, and isn’t that what art and creativity is about? In the arranged life that

This life, in constant perfection,

Transformed

Armor-plated, stiff,

Too small, between
