Danielle Antelope is a member of the Blackfeet Nation and Eastern Shoshone Nation. Born and raised in Browning, MT, she graduated from MSU with a bachelor’s degree in Sustainable Food & Bioenergy Systems, and at only 26 years old, is now the Executive Director of FAST Blackfeet. As a nonprofit organization, @fastblackfeet provides access to healthy and culturally relevant foods, nutrition education, and gardening/wild harvesting opportunities within the Blackfeet Nation. In this conversation, we dive into Native American history through the lens of the different generations of her family, beginning with her great grandmother, who was the last generation to be born in tipis, live off the land and eat a traditional diet. Her grandmother was the generation of strict reservation boundaries, when ceremonies and gardens were made illegal, and the government introduced commodity rations after killing off their main food source: the buffalo. Her mother’s generation is what she calls the “survival foods” era, when the diet shifts to dishes like fry bread and other recipes made from colonial ingredients like wheat, oil and sugar. “Pieces of Me” I’ve always appreciated the strength, beauty and resilience of Indigenous persons and was so proud and happy to learn from my Gramie while in Jr high, that we carry #Blackfeet blood within us. I longed to know more about my Indigenous ancestry. I longed to find my community and participate in the rituals, however most of us reside in Montana or Alberta—so I made up my mind to one day make a trip to both locations. Throughout the years when I would meet a fellow Indigenous sister or brother I’d be so happy 🥰, but I was afraid of rejection—that they’d not consider me their blood because my appearance didn’t necessarily present as Indigenous. But as I’ve grown older, I’ve realized the importance and beauty in claiming all the pieces of yourself and not caring about others’ opinions or reactions. Friends, I only know the above flows through my body through a DNA test, and while it’s a blessing, it’s not enough. I desperately long to know who my 4x great grandparents were, to know the stories of all whom have made me, to know the tribes in Africa my family hails from. One of the cruelest parts of colonization was the severing of self. The stealing of our language and history as well as our bodies. This is the case for both Indigenous and those of the African Diaspora, who were and still are forced to assimilate or die. I encourage you to reflect on that whenever you hear us described as “thugs” or once again falsely accused of being the reason we were murdered by cops. If you find it inconvenient when Indigenous peoples protest about the removal of their likeness and history from sports’ teams names or costumes, if you have a negative view of a Black person or feel the desire to buck against any terms that the Black community has created to empower and uplift one another, to fight for and build community, it’s crucial to pause and reflect. Terms like Queen, Sis, Black is Beautiful, Unapologetically Black, Black and Proud, this is how we heal and mend together the threads that were purposefully cut by Western European colonizers. These are our expressions, please don’t reduce them to pop culture slang for your enjoyment.
