Still Tumbling!
Hey everyone!
It's been a hot minute since I've been active on Tumblr, but I'm back and ready to explore and post again! To kick things off, I wanted to share some music that I've been collaborating on and teeing up to scare you all with this Halloween!
First up, we have the debut self-titled "Brendananis Monster EP". This EP harks back to the early days of his music productions in the eerily 2000's and has a variety of vibes and beats inspired by turn-of-the-century forays into rave and electronica, spiced with screaming acid expeditions. The EP is scarily satisfying and leaves us wanting and knowing that there must be more terrifyingly good tunes to come from Brendananis Monster.
Next, we have "29 (Remix)" by Richard Remedios. This song is an absolute bop, and I challenge you to listen to it without dancing along. It's the perfect pick-me-up for any day, even the 'day of the dead'. Electing to indulge in electronic melodies that are matched with entrancing singing. Don't miss out on upcoming works by this artist hailing from Sydney, who possesses an unparalleled knack for creating an ambiance of unparalleled coolness. --->

Finally, we have "Monotonous Continuation" by AnXieT. I get to play bass in this awesome band of bros, and like all these tunes in this post, I get the privilege to record, mix and/or master the "lil monsters!" This thrash/black metal song has a sharp edge to it, raw, bloody heart sleeves emotion and a live recording feel to the production. The engine room is thumping, and relentless, it'll leave your ears bloody, and Tricky's cutting vocals and blackened lyrics leave you shattered, ending with screams of eternal torment & bliss of baring witness to our damnation & liberation all at once, only to be finalized with a crushing 'monotonous continuation'.!!
This song has been included with another horrible AnXieT song, and among other black metal style bands and artists on one of the most depressingly dark black metal compilation releases from Perth this year called "Demonic Intervention". The compilation album is also out this Halloween on the emerging Western Australian record label, Cold Tomb Records. This is one for the doomed metalheads and any music lover who appreciates a bit of metal at Halloween! \m/

A POST_PUNK EXPRESS… // “ALLEN IVERSON” is the lead track from @theendstx brand new EP titled ‘Forfeiture’ & it finds the DFW-based trio of Santiago Lara (guitar/vox), Carlos Echeverria (drums) & Jackson Douglas (bass/vox) bringing their dissonant brand of gazey post_hardcoring Emo. “DUST” is the lead single from @grdns_east forthcoming EP titled ‘Portal’ (1/13) & it finds the ever-prolific Vermont-based artist Tom Weir (@old_moon__) tapping into “a sound that is as equally suited to the dancefloor as to quiet reflection” over a house-tinged slice of soothing Electronica. @krueltyjphc are here w/ “BURN THE SYSTEM,” the lead single from their forthcoming LP titled ‘Untopia’ (3/17 @profoundlorerecords) & it finds the Tokyo-based quintet of Tatami (vox), Zuma (guitar) Ken (guitar), Seina (bass) & Mani (drums) bringing their all_out_assault across a 4:49 clip of blackened DoomMetal. “REPULSION” is a choice cut from NAG’s latest LP titled ‘Human Coward Coyote’ (@convulserecords) & it finds the ATL-based quartet of Brannon Greene (guitar/vox), Micky Gordon (bass), Rob Sarabia (guitar) & Ryan Fetter (drums) dropping a spastic mash of gothy no_waving meets SST post_punking. “LIKE A DOG” is the second single from @semantix.exe forthcoming EP titled ‘Violent Protocol’ (1/13 @dka_records) & it finds Keaton Khonsari’s Dallas-based project dropping a hard-hitting Industrialized banger that revels in its sinister EBM dark_waving.

Coalfalls - Pieces (4000 Records) Australian post-rock ala 65daysofstatic.
Cult of Luna - The Raging River (Red Creek) Another solid Cult of Luna release but I can’t help thinking that the days of churning out post-metal masterpieces like Eternal Kingdom are behind them.
Emily - Imbolc (self-released) Rutabega’s sometime-vocalist Emily recorded this collection of ambient dream-pop songs using Garageband on her Macbook’s built-in mic. The results sound like Bjork in the depths of a Barbiturate binge.
Fall of Efrafa - Owslafa (self-released) FoE is one of my favorite bands ever. Here is a demo recording of the first album, Owsla as well the final live performance in London. Probably for fans only, but that’s me!
Fluisteraars - Gegrepen Door de Geest der Zielsontluiking (Eisenwald) Weirdo dutch black metal.
Flust - Dance Le Metro (self-released) Auteur Michael Groome presents the second installment of his meticulously crafted synth pop. The ghost of Depeche Mode hangs heavy over this but rarely descends into that group’s penchant for navel-gazing self pity.
FoxMoulder - Discography (Zegema Beach/No Funeral) As implied by the title, this is previously-released material collected for easy reference. I’ve always had a soft spot for this sort of impassioned chaotic emo/hardcore and this hits that spot quite nicely.
G36 Vs JK Flesh - Disintegration Dubs (Pressure) Kevin Martin (The Bug, Techno Animal) and Justin Broadrick (Godflesh, Techno Animal) mashup and remix each other’s tracks and the result is some deeply disturbing dark, electronic dub.
Gift of Blindness - The Lake (Blindsight) This UK outfit plays industrial doom highly reminiscent of both Godflesh and Jesu. In fact, this could be a release from either of those bands. I dig it but the hero worship gets to be a bit much.
Godflesh - New Flesh in Dub Vol. 1 (Avalanche) A compilation of all the dubs/versions/remixes of the Godflesh reformation releases so far. Nasty, grimy, and fucked beyond belief.
The Great Went - Giardiniera (self-released) Minneapolis instrumental math rock reminiscent of Maserati.
Guerrilla Ghost - The Trumaine EP (Triple Eye) Milwaukee industrial rap group musing on Wesely Snipes movie roles.
Harakiri For The Sky - Maere (AOP) Yet more Austrian blackish metal. In this case, anthemic blackened post-hardcore.
Living Under Drones - Knot On Knot (self-released) Experimental instrumental noiserock made by a bunch of greek weirdos.
Light Bearer - Last Recordings (self-released) Light Bearer were/are one of my all-time favorite bands. While these tracks are demos/outtakes, they still show the band in all its epic post-metal glory.
Lovely Socialite - Quarantine Loops, Vol. 2 & 3 (self-released) Lovely Socialites recorded original loop material and used that the source material for electronic compositions by the members of the band and friends. Trippy, jazzy, contemplative.
Lower Automation - s/t (Zegema Beach) Spastic Chicago math-noise with a singer who sounds a lot like Cedric of At The Drive In.
Luggage - Happiness (Husky Pants) Grinding and minimal Chicago noiserock filtered through some sort of gauzy post-punk filter.
Numberwitch - Numberwitch (self-released) Super-brainy soundscapey electronic pop. Incredibly chill and incredibly brilliant.
Portrayal Of Guilt - We Are Always Alone (Closed Casket Activities) Absolutely insane hybridization of hardcore, black metal, grind, and doom from Austin Texas. Not for the faint of heart
Simple Syrup - Make Me Float (Business Casual) Gorgeous electronica in the vein of Bowery Electric or Cocteau Twins – but I guess the kids are calling vaporwave these days?
Slant - 1* (Iron Lungs) Frenetic and snotty, this Korean punk band absolutely shreds on these 10 songs. Definitely a throwback stylistically, but it’s done so well and with such much obvious joy, I can’t NOT love. (Note: one of the tightest hardcore bands I’ve ever heard!)
Snaum - Selfmadeself (self-released) Weirdo experimental industrial blacken doom. Super weird. And from Poland!
Tech Level 2 - Depths (Avalanche)| Justin Broadrick’s early 2000s industrial breakcore project finally given release.
To Forget - Echoes Take Their Place (Zegema Beach) Epic screamy hardcore with just enough polish to make it really get under your skin. When they start mixing in their post-metal influenced take on it, they do. Well, mine anyways.
Tron Jovi - Bass + Frequency Studies In Dub, Chapter One (Triple Eye) Sparse and spacey industrial dub from the producer in Guerrilla Ghost. Blaze it!
Trvss - New Distances (Cruel Natures) Classic 90s noiserock played with grit, resolve and spite. Touch’n’Go/AmRep personified. Glorious.

Punching in with the anticipated new episode of his singular jaunts into electronic music’s wild blue yonder is Beatservice habitué Ulf Moen Denneche, alias Boblebad. Following up to his previous release — the fun and bouncy Vill Falafel— the Norwegian producer dishes out the Kalde Vibber EP. Its four cuts continue in the same vein of Boblebad’s playful disco: cosmopolitan, unruly, and definitely nutty by nature. With other releases for Paper, Eskimo, and Full Papp, as well as a full album due early next year, Boblebad’s on the quick rise.
True to Boblebad's ever intricate engineering of floor-ready dynamics and off-piste bizarro, "Hundeliv" breaks the EP in to the sound of barking dogs, middle-Eastern strings and aloof-yet-fevered drumwork, slowly hatching into a full-fledged off-kilter club tune as bars go by. More of an Italo-infused oddity, "Mørketid" evokes damper, more nocturnal ambiences with its fluttering mix of cheap Casio synths and early ‘Prince of Persia’ harmonics either out an Ali Baba-themed Vegas casino or some dusty Commodore floppy disk. As usual with Boblebad, the U-turns are pretty radical, and though it draws elements from a similar palette, track three "Paraplydrink" veers off onto more ambient-friendly territories of pre-trance electronica a la KLF, complete with the odd steel pan sequence to have the listener drifting far and wide into a Caribbean Eden of sorts. "Kalde Vibber" rounds it off on a further anthemic note with an irresistibly infectious mix of squelchy bass, deep synth vibrations, and intuitive organicity, sure to have the dancers zoning out in a flash. Jockeys take note, this one's got "perfect closing track / after-wrapper" written all over it.

I can imagine throwing this one down as the sunlight creeps in through the cracks in the blackened windows of whatever club I'm playing at. Paraplydrink though, is a thing of beauty.” Sandro Bianchi (Ibiza Sonica) – “Amazing release, love it!” Hober Mallow (Mighty Reel, Sydney) – “Have been playing Hundeliv and Paraplydrink regularly, love this sound. The other two are new to me but welcome additions, standout is Kalde Vibber.”

Most animated bands tend to be some form of electronica, pop, somewhere therein, because the cutesy and fake aesthetics fit well. Attempting an animated black metal band is.

...well at least it’s not totally without precedent.
Still, it’s a hard feat, and how do you pull it off anyways? Belzebubs started as a silly comic, how do you go from purely visual silly comics to a serious audio medium? Goddamn if they didn’t find a way with a simple three-step process.
1. Rope in the lead singer of an already acclaimed metal band 2. Get a surprisingly tightly stitched group of grand, powerful, and oftentimes poetic songs 3. Play the music totally straight, and leave all the silliness for the lovingly animated videos

As a sucker for 2d animation this hits ALL the right notes, no pun intended. Effort and quality ooze from every part of the tracks, the videos, I’m kind of stunned here. With the mini foursome of the Moon Queen tracks too, it’s clear no corners were cut. This is an act of bloody, brooding, blackened love 🖤

Vinyl Corner : Om 'Advaitic Songs'
Vinyl Corner is a feature where we take a look at vinyl pressings of various albums and weigh them up to see just how good they sound, how well they're pressed and what sort of packaging to expect - as well as giving a brief overview of the music itself. For today's instalment, we're looking back at one of the most significant experimental rock albums of the previous decade - Om's 'Advaitic Songs'. The Music: Precious few artists who emerged from the sonic fury of the early '90s sludge metal scene have managed to survive the subsequent decades intact. Some fell by the wayside early on, swallowed by the blackened haze of drink and drugs; others lasted longer, only to eventually outstay their welcome and fade into irrelevancy. The fact that neither of these things happened to Om's Al Cisneros is impressive in itself - but it's his maturation and evolution as an artist that sets him apart as one his generation's most pivotal creative minds. Though criminally underrated for far too long, the 2010s saw his status rise significantly, both in Om and also his most famous group - the stoner metal legends Sleep. Considering the latter's triumphant 2018 return with 'The Sciences' (which we reviewed back upon its original release here) and their continued success in the live field, now seems to be as good a time as any to look back at 2012's Triumphant 'Advaitic Songs'. Om were born from the ashes of a disbanded Sleep; originally comprised of Cisneros - bassist, vocalist and de facto leader - and stick-wielder Chris Hakius. Their early records were at once both immediately crushing in their heaviness yet significantly more meditative than anything Sleep had crafted. That sense of sanguine equilibrium was further explored on 2009's 'God Is Good' - released by an expanded three-piece configuration of the group - but it wasn't until 2012's exceptional 'Advaitic Songs' that Cisneros' vision of spirituality meshed with deep, pensive stoner rock was finally perfected. Those familiar with Cisneros' previous - and primarily metal - excursions could be forgiven for receiving the stunning album opener 'Addis' with some surprise. It's a devotional piece - or at least it has the feel of one - replete with gorgeous female vocals and subtle, lilting percussion. It isn't until 'State Of Non-Return' kicks in that the group deliver a taste of their signature heaviness - but, even then, it's toned down and accented with flourishes of strings which speak of an artistic vision unable to be kept with the confines of any one style. 'Advaitic Songs' confounded expectations in 2012 and it continues to amaze the best of a decade later. Although Om's earlier work may continue to offer much of worth, it's still this fantastic album that remains their definitive release. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kKqoNrZ00Bg The Pressing: Evidently realising they had something special on their hands, the ever-excellent Drag City released 'Advaitic Songs' as a double LP cut at 45 rpm for superior sound quality. This was certainly a wise decision as this remains one of the richest, most sonically impressive titles in the label's considerable catalogue. At only 43 minutes in length, this could have been cut at 33 rpm on a single LP but much of the dubby, ground shaking weight of the bass would have been lost had they taken that course. As it is, the vinyl version of 'Advaitic Songs' is a treat; Cisneros' mellifluent, lyrical bass work throbs and hums beneath the rich arrangements. The drums, meanwhile, chime and snap with all the precision and realism you'd expect and the strings positively pop from the mix. This was a well-recorded album to begin with, but the vinyl mastering - handled by industry stalwart John Golden - more than does justice to this intricately crafted album. The choice to spread the album across two LPs no doubt helps in this regard; although mostly commonly found amongst electronica releases where heavy, pounding bass is an essential, it's a well known tenet amongst collectors that shorter sides equate to fuller bass. Not only that, but we've often found that the mid-range frequencies of well mastered double LPs are fuller and more impressive than those found on otherwise similar 33 rpm cuts. This certainly seems to ring true in case of 'Advaitic Songs'; people often speak of vinyl as sounding "warm" and while that's a vague description at best, the sound on this release is nothing if not warm. The pressing, too, is highly impressive. Pressed at America's excellent Record Technology Incorporated - arguably the US' best pressing plant - these discs boast clean playback throughout, benefitting from low noise floors and tidy surfaces bearing only a few very minor imperfections here and there. Precious few pressings sounds this good; a combination of a quality pressing and excellent mastering lead to the vinyl version of 'Advaitic Songs' impressing on multiple levels. The Packaging: The quality of the audio certainly sets a high bar for the packaging and presentation to reach, but it's one that is mostly met. The striking, beautiful artwork is presented in excellent quality - good enough to frame, for those so inclined. The image quality is sharp throughout and the layout is both classy and distinctive. The only concession towards budget here is the sleeve itself, which is a wide-spine single pocket, non-gatefold design. We've never been a big fan of this kind of sleeve for double LPs and it's true that the card stock used here is a tad on the light side - but that doesn't matter too much, as the presentation is excellent in all other regards. A lyric insert is included - which is a welcome bonus in itself but becomes all the more impressive when considering the beautiful spot-glossed artwork found on the flip-side of the sheet. Viewed in sunlight, it's quite something to behold. The inner sleeves are generic but highly impressive; they're made from high quality black polylined paper that will ensure the records remain in superb condition for their whole lives - so long as they're handled with due care by the owner, of course. Far too few modern releases are presented in such high quality inner sleeves, so that is more than enough to placate any concerns over the non-gatefold jacket. The cover is also free of a barcode, which is another sign of the unusual care put into this release, and it is instead found as a sticker attached to the shrinkwrap. Final Thoughts: This is an exceptional release of an exceptional album. Still readily available the best part of a decade on from its original release, the vinyl version of 'Advaitic Songs' comes enthusiastically recommended for all - whether you're a long-term fan rediscovering the album after a time away or one yet to envelop yourself in the its richness and warmth.
