Film & TV I Think About A Lot » Crooklyn (1994) dir. Spike Lee
At least my hair isn't standing on my head sticking straight out looking all like Topsy. I don't know who Topsy is, but it looks stupid, and I can't stand it. I can't stand you either. Why don't you sit down with your ol' Black self? I'm Black and I'm proud. She got good hair. She got "Peter" Rican hair.
#its bout to be the 30 yr anniversary of this film wow#my favorite spike lee movie one of my favorite movies period my inspiration for writing#its like 90% vibes i reference so many scenes from it all the time#if this movie were a candle it would smell like nostalgia#love a girlhood movie I love Troy bby girl#also#black#ru paul#so#cftv#mygifs#movie gifs#gifsets#film#filmgifs#cinematv#hd gifs#crooklyn#spike lee#delroy lindo#zelda harris#Ruth E. Apparently, BM are complaining about the new color purple movie “depicting BM in a negative light,” and are mad about Celie and Shug kissing (they did more than that in the novel and they also kissed in the original film, are these people stupid) and I-
#convulsing at the mouth#BM are such weak links Istg bro#lil boosie and all of these other nig nogs aren’t seeing heaven#rambling#I didn’t even know that the film was out already….#and to water down the stories intentions as something that hurts black men is shameful when the story had always#very obviously been about black patriarchy and the trauma that black girls and women have to go through while suffering under it#black women finding power within themselves is too much for BM to handle though they hate it I guess lol#they sympathize with men like mister while shaming and hurting BM for continuing to fight

just watched high school musical. sharpay and ryan are the only good characters. also they're so narcissa and kingsley to me.
#why are all the mean girls in early 2000s teen movies so lesbian coded??#like sharpay. regina. can't remember the mean girl in bring it on but I'm pretty sure most of the girls in that are sapphic coded.#the mean girl in confessions of a tennage drama queen is literally played by megan fox so of course she's sapphic coded#like even wild child. harriet is totally growing up to be a future lesbian. probably turns into olivia in you me and him ngl#btw i'm not like a teen film superfan or anything!! I just love films and watch stuff from all genres!!#marauders era#narcissa black#kingsley mcintosh

[Image description: A digital drawing based on the film Girl Shy. It depicts Harold Lloyd's character Harold Meadows sat at his typewriter, paused in thought as his fingers hover above it. His eyes are looking up and his mouth is slightly open, like he's dreaming awake. A thought bubble floats around him like smoke, with the faces of two women in the middle of it. The two have annotations next to them that denote the twenties era stereotypes that they are styled as. The one noted as "the flapper" is smiling and has curly, slightly unkempt hair, with a headband around it. She has lighter makeup than the woman next to her, who has dark lips and eyeshadow and is labelled "the vamp". She has large circular statement earrings and an ornate headpiece atop her smooth updo. Her eyes are downturned, and her expression less approachable. Harold is coloured in greyscale, and so are the ladies, although they have a warmer brown tone, as does the smoke. There's a pinker line of light surrounding them and the writing. The background is a dark brown.]

#mojo jojo#sedusa#him#THE SQUAD™️#this is such cute fanart lol i imagine them having movie nights and eventually fighting over what to watch#mojo wants some pretentious artsy black and white flick from the Criterion Collection (he loves to feel superior to sedusa and him)#sedusa picks a cheesy Hallmark movie (she loves to make Mojo and Him suffer through them... also she secretly loves them lol)#him picks like crazy dadaist films or unbearable b-movies (like he forces mojo and sedusa to watch something like manos or birdemic)#...or traumatizing movies... snuff films... footage of famous disasters... who knows with Him he's a wild card#they have fun :)#powerpuff girls#the powerpuff girls#ppg#fanart#Instagram

Army of Darkness (1992)
"Are all men from the future loudmouthed braggarts?"
"Nope. Just me, baby. Just me."
#army of darkness#evil deadology#horror imagery#horror film#1992#american cinema#sam raimi#ivan raimi#bruce campbell#embeth davidtz#marcus gilbert#ian abercrombie#richard grove#timothy patrick quill#bridget fonda#patricia tallman#michael earl reid#ted raimi#bill moseley#joseph loduca#danny elfman#i get why this is as beloved as it is but regretfully i think it's my least favourite of the og trilogy; i still had a whale of a time but#where fhe first film was a stripped down pared back bone chiller of an exercise in pure horror and the second built on that to stir in some#deeply funny absurdist black comedy‚ this one kind of foregoes the horror all together to concentrate on being a zany comedy film about a#fish out of water. ok so it's still quite gloopy in places‚ but the sense of dread‚ the palpable horror is gone. Campbell is still superb#of course and Ash is still very baby girl. but he and Raimi are mostly going for straight laughs instead of uncomfortable giggles#the laughing scene in ED2 is the perfect Moment of these films: an absolute nailing of the blend of disturbing uncanny with absurd ott goof#i missed that blend a little. still a great time like i say and still a worthy third film in an unlikely triumph of an indie trilogy

I am a flowery hippie gal at heart with a love for color and more bold, vibrant makeup than I have the confidence to wear... but I took a break from work to play with some old eyeliner I found bc why not, I never actually wear it that often, it's doing no good sitting around...
And oh no.
I'm not sure I really pull off the goth look well, but I think with some practice, I could see myself really getting into the super bold/dark eyeliner + black/dark dark red lip combo. I'm just not sure how to make it work with my skintone. I'm v pale but I flush easily, so my face pinks and I don't think that looks great with the dark makeup.
But I fear this has awakened something in me ksglksgls
Related: Does anyone else have a hard time making black lipstick work? Maybe it's just bc mine is cheap, but it rubs off easily and doesn't look all that pigmented when I put it on. It's more tinted than covered.
#am i allowed to join fashion subcultures if i never stick to just one#can i be a classic/princess/country lolita girl but also goth but also punk but also look like i popped out of a 1940s-1960s film#and also sometimes cowgirl#i want to be everything#oooooooh wait. maybe i could go for a beatnik look when it's colder weather. break out the black turtleneck. that'd look nice i think.

I think you might find the mother-daughter sexual abuse angle in Black Swan of interest if you haven't already delved into that
yesss
I was really taken aback by their relationship when I first watched the film because the incestuous subtext was pretty blatant and I hadn't seen any discussion around it beforehand. The idea of the abusive mother is still pretty hard to register for certain people, so when you add sexual abuse into the mix, plus inflicted on another woman, it mostly disappears from analysis.
#asks#it made me absolutely crazy when I watched it at the time cause NO ONE was talking about it and I felt like I was just making connections#which weren't there#but so many things hint towards this interpretation and tbh it's not that surprising that it's an overlooked subject.#it's very often reduced as mommy issues as many relationships in other medias are without looking much further#(Sharp Objects for instance. like... how can you read the book and not see that. anyways)#Some of the interractions they have can be read this way (like the scene where Nina licks Erica's finger or 'are you ready for me?')#But the one where it truly clicked for me was when they showed Nina's room opened right after she wakes up from her night with 'Lily'#plus the 'Sweet Girl' during the sex scene#Tbh I can't really say if anything really happened between the two at this moment. but it's extremely telling to end the scene this way#The interpretation that Lily in this moment is a projection to think of somebody else while it's Erica who's truly there is plausible#However I don't know if Aronofsky thought of it that way. I think it was supposed to be read as an hallucination through and through and#given the incestuous undertones established earlier in the film it was more to be seen as a psychosexual/Freudian dynamic#But idk. Erica still violates Nina's boundaries repetively and says things concerning how attrative and sexually desirable she is#which are beyond the simple dominating role most people associate to her#SO YEAH ! I spent quite some time thinking about this relationship last year since I thought I was losing my mind at first#might have to rewatch Black Swan now...#black swan#my thoughts

Every teenage girl has:
a) a society telling her constantly that the only thing she should be interested in is love and BOYSSSS!
b) a frustrated lust for violence
And the societal role of YA fantasy/sci-fi fiction is to act like it's just conforming to the former, while in reality appealing pretty transparently to the latter.
#ya lit#hot take#feminism#this isn't JUST about hunger games#or holly black's 'various girls with swords' series#or the new film where the female mc straight up eats people#like this is a *thing*#i mean everyone talks about twilight like it was just playing into the fantasy of having two hot guys fight over you#but even in twilight bella's MAIN GOAL throughout the series is actually to become an unkillable vampire with super strength#to the extent that edward even worries at one point that she might just be using him for his immortality#every popular ya fantasy/sci fi series has a core of deep violence#also warrior cats is the junior version of this phenomenon btw

truly exhausted of “”feminist”” films that don’t even really say anything revolutionary or even explore basic issues in depth and instead rely on 2013 tumblr esque dialogue to make a movie that feels hollow and removed from any subtlety or nuance because it’s too busy throwing basic statements at you like a hand grenade and almost play into these ideas of strawmen and make characters feel less like people and more like caricatures. but then because the film is so heavily based on this idea of being “”feminist”” any criticism is written off as just “hating women” because apparently film criticism dies whenever the movie is supposedly some feminist piece of art. a movie being by women and about women doesn’t inherently make it good and if all you’re doing is providing a more sanitised version of a movie that was made ten, twenty, fifty years ago then your stories are not only bland but also unoriginal.
#anyway i watched black christmas 2019 and. lmao.#also not for nothing but surely it undoes the entire point of your film#the point being Men Are Evil And Use Their Power And Privilege To Abuse Women#to then make the actions of the men in the movie the result of some fucking curse????#because a guy 200 years ago did pagan rituals????#disappointing because the idea of it sounds so good on paper. women murder evil rapist fratboys <3#but instead we got terminally online dialogue and some stupid supernatural plot and like. terrible filmmaking.#also they did themselves no favours by marketing it as a black christmas remake#like what did it have in common besides sorority girls being murdered and being set at christmas#also original black christmas was arguably more feminist despite being made by a man in the 1970s but whatever#at least cary elwes had fun

I'm very weary of narratives and dynamics that paint people of color as like bullies, or intolerant/bigoted, or anything of the sort against white characters cause it's not that we're infallible either within specific communities or as a collective but like...idk like I feel like we're usually in these roles more often than not (its ESP Black women and girls, and Dark skin women and girls even moreso) like, esp when shows tout themselves as progressive cause knowing how Fandoms roll esp in regards to bleeding into actors off screen I just know there are people like going the hell in, because even when they're not bad people at all or just like a fleshed out human beings let them do one thing wrong, or do something fans don't like, people never shut the fuck up about it (look at Meredith and Amelia from Grey's vs Maggie and Bailey, esp in like the second half of the Grey's run) meanwhile white characters can never do anything wrong ever even when they're very much in the wrong which hmmm does that not also sound like real life?
#tbh this is about a lot of shows but I keep seeing clips of that show heartbreak high#and it's this lesbian couple I think and one is white and autistic and the other one is Asian#and I always see clips of the asian girl being very like abelist and mean and people talking about her#which she seems to always be ragging on her gf one way or another which obviously no one should be doing that#but again there's always an implication that we as woc are always the aggressor or mean#and it's like why did you make that choice#of you've actually seen it tell me if I'm wrong#but it's like I kind of can't unsee this dynamic it happens a lot in television and film#it's like when people wanna do this Black people vs LGBT ppl very much ignoring all the people with both identities#but also acting as if Black people are just so intolerant that we don't know any better or could even be supportive if not a part of#these groups#I'm sure this applies to other groups too I'm just speaking on my own experiences at this second#idk if I'm making sense it's like 3 am#random
