Queer Identity and Autism in The Deep

The story behind River Solomon's The Deep is just as cool as the novella they wrote. Daveed Diggs, who lent his voice to the audiobook as narrator, described it as a game of telephone. This story has been told in several forms by several people, each retelling a little different. He described this as a feature of the game and not a failing. As cool as the backstory is, there is nothing to it that I can add. Because of that, this post is mostly an editorial, small part review. I'll be focusing on queer and autistic representation in the book. To fill the gap, I strongly encourage you all to listen to the audiobook to get the full experience (especially the afterward), to listen to clipping.'s song "The Deep", and to seek outside information on the story.

The Deep tells the tale of underwater creatures similar to merfolk, primarily Yetu, their historian. These creatures, the "wajinru", are the descendants of pregnant slaves that were thrown overboard. Over time they have decided that their history is too treacherous to dwell on. Once a year they share the memories of their past before passing them back to the historian. This is called "The Remembrance". It is the historian's job or burden to remember the rest of the time and to collect as many memories as they can. It is immediately evident to me, an autistic person, that Yetu is autistic as well. She easily gets lost in the memories she carries and she does not handle sensory experiences well. As deep-sea dwellers, the wajinru communicate through sonar and touch. The Remembrance is particularly intense as the memories are incredibly immersive.

Solomon, one of my favorites, is an autistic author. Although Yetu is never explicitly labeled as autistic in the novella, she absolutely is. It is not something the characters have a word for, but even before taking on the role of historian, she was different from her community. While she was picked as the successor due to her heightened ability to receive sensory input, her ability to handle it was not considered. Ultimately, The Deep is a story about a community learning not only how to face their past, but to accommodate an autistic member of their community who learns how to set boundaries. I will not spoil how, but I promise the book ends in a healthy way.

I appreciate the way Solomon approaches autism for their characters. Both Yetu and the main character of An Unkindness of Ghosts are never specifically labeled as autistic, but very clearly are. Allister people and Neurotypical folks tend to misunderstand what autism is, drawing from stereotypes portrayed in films like Forrest Gump and perpetuated by Autism Speaks. This is a narrow and negative view that doesn't focus much on autistic adults or at all on autistic people that were socialized as women. Solomon doesn't shy away from proper representation. Each autistic person has their own mix of traits and experiences with those traits. Solomon especially focuses on heightened senses, hyperfixation, being nonverbal, and thinking in ways that are different from others. One thing that these characters are not is unintelligent, as that is not what autism is. I hope to see more accurate representation of autism in literature and elsewhere! I desire for more characters like me.

The queer content does not surface until very far into the book. At one point in the story, Yetu ends up meeting some two-legged land folks. One is Oori, someone who Yetu believes is autistic. Because of their similarities, Yetu and Oori start to bond and gain feelings for each other. Oori has lost her home and her family. Because of this, she does not easily bond with others. She does kind things for the people she knows, but not with the desire to be close to them. Yetu is different, worth getting to know. The two discuss their experiences as wajinru and human. One such topic is genitalia. The wajinru are very open to differences in gender and attraction. They all have both forms of genitalia, but some identity as women, men, both, neither, and in between. Polyamory is also quite common for them. Fantasy stories should not be afraid to ditch queer-phobia. If you can create any world you want, why would you want to keep that?

If you enjoy mermaids, Afrofuturism, positive autistic representation, or Solomon's storytelling, you should absolutely read The Deep. The experience of reading this novella is enhanced by consuming it in audiobook format, so please consider choosing that over print. As it is a novella, it won't take much of your time, but every line is worth it! Thank you Solomon for another wonderful story.

Gotta make a post about my best DunMeshi neurospicy boi

Lotta content out there about Laios' autistic traits but where o where is the Senshi rep?

Senshi's dedication to Dungeon trophic systems makes Laios' special interest look like a well-thumbed pamphlet. (Granted Senshi has had significantly longer to cook; Laios is a baby).

Senshi's limited emoting is baked-in to his character model- that thousand yard stare, most of his face occluded by his habitual helmet (masked, even...... How many folks pine for covid masks obviating the need to manage their faces constantly?)

He overheard someone mention his special interest and Walked Right Up to a Group of Strangers to brazenly asplain them a thing. Marcille makes a bridge-mending bid regarding the mosses in the scorpion hotpot (after her previous truculent outbursts) and he totally deadpans her, because he didn't even notice.

He is VERY COMMITED to his ethical position on dungeon ecology. More than once he's disrupted Marcille Right at the point of release of a spell, after she's been chanting for like a paragraph, because she's going to contravene some principle of his.

Also

Speaking of Marcille, he demonstrates some pretty rigid, black-and-white thinking around magic, that doesn't seem internally consistent. He's repeatedly reanimating magical constructs (golems), an explicitly controlled magical act, but is Very Very reluctant to submit to being charmed with WaterWalk; his spoken reasoning about this just doesn't hold water.

Oh and he's totally neglected his personal hygiene for basically ever. He's averse to cleaning up for the sake of being bespelled, but other than magic, seems fine with getting the salon treatment. This isn't a Toph Beifong 'protective layer of earth', he's just forgotten to care about not being covered with monster gore.

PDA? The fellow has one (1) social skill, namely, he exercises any discretion on opening his mouth to argue. But that holds him back exactly NONE when he decides he's done listening. The first time we see this is gathering Mandrakes, when he doesn't SAY he's done with Marcille's opinions, but he Does just go ahead and exercise his damn autonomy. a MUCH stronger example is when Chilchuck is guiding them through the trap rooms. Senshi gets roundly (and rightly!) chewed out by Chilchuck, and his response isn't the sensible 'sorry Chilchuck, maybe I could walk more directly behind you so I can more closely match your steps', but to BRAZENLY DANCE ALL OVER THE TRAP FLOOR! the only reason that doesn't kill the whole party is The Plot. It's not even that he doesn't appreciate Chilchuck's skill- he just don't like getting chastised! Same with Anne the Kelpie! Senshi's gonna do what Senshi's gonna do! He WILL not be rushed, he WILL not be chastised, he WILL not be directed! How do we think he came to be living in a dungeon all by himself in the first place!!

AND THE BREAD!

Look there's more. After Chilchuck's impassioned and heartfelt plea, Senshi suggests they should return to the surface because they're 'low on seasoning'.

He's a dwarf who turned his adamantium shield into a cookpot.

He can meticulously maintain his mithril cooking knife but not his axe.

He responds well to other characters meeting him halfway but initiates few (no?) such bids himself. There's rarely any guile in Senshi, and when he is being shifty, he's Bad At It- and again, usually its in service of demand avoidance, like when he capitalises on Marcille's toilet break to reanimate his golems.

Senshi is the monomaniac that society has spent Decades trying to iron out of my wrinkly brain.

I hope to see him also find a place in the neurosparkly constellations.

People can scream about the mean Buddies being bullies all they want, but it's not going to change the fact that Buddie fans never convinced anyone that a plot device and glorified extra was 911's new star just because he was a white man. Fans did that themselves.

For some reason, the way Tommy fans are now trying to sideline Athena in her own plot when Angela Bassett is an Emmy and Oscar winning actress with a career spanning decades and LFJ just has a famous dad is so galling to me. The reason I watch 911 is because the kinds of characters who only get to stand on the sidelines in other action shows get to be big damn heroes on this one. "Autism saves the day" is so on-brand for this show and that's why I love it. This isn't Supernatural. White male characters don't become the default heroes and leaders in every situation just because they show up and are conventionally attractive. An older black woman and a black autistic 8-year-old are going to land that plane and it's going to be just as "realistic" as whatever 30-year-old Whiteman McSixpack has done in any other action movie or show ever made.

It's fair to say that Buddie fans also expect to see Buck and Eddie too often, but at least Buck and Eddie are show leads with 6 years of history behind them. At least Buck and Eddie getting together would actually be unique queer rep that is worth getting excited over (and that we honestly may never have a shot at again). At least Buck and Eddie getting together doesn't sideline characters who have been part of the show for over half a decade.

I get that Buck coming out was exciting, but Buck coming out is about Buck, not Tommy or Buck/ Tommy. Tommy should have always been treated like Taylor or Natalia. It should never have been assumed that just because he was a man (and white) he would naturally be privileged over not just other love interests but over Eddie (and, now, Athena). Getting mad because Buddie shippers put Buck's coming out into the context of story that's been building for six years only to turn around and obsess over a storyline with barely any screentime is...a bold choice.

Sometimes i think about the books I wanna/am writing, and worry im not putting enough diversity in them. This is in multiple forms; race, body type, disabilities, etc, etc. Then I remember that I have a lot of them down, but don't think about it often. I feel like he met you at a coffee shop, maybe even a library? Nothing insane or too crazy though.

He would definitely be a regular at a small coffee shop that you go to quite often, so running into eachother every once in a while there would be a given.

Now, I know I said coffee shop but he definitely isn't a caffeine person and doesn't like the taste of coffee. He probably gets jasmine tea or something of the sort and like a scone maybe.

He eventually goes up to you and makes some small talk after a while of shared glances and such.

I just feel like the first times recognising eachother would be catching glances at eachother and sending small waves or little smiles. (Seems cute I dunno).

When he first talks to you, he starts off really strong in terms of confidence, then proceeds to get more shy and awkward as the conversation goes on.

"Hey, I see you around here a lot. Would you mind if I sat with you?" A male voice says from beside you.

You look up to see the man with black framed glasses you see often right behind you.

"Oh, hello! Yeah you can go right on ahead," You say, motioning for him to take the seat right across you, putting your book down.

The man sits across from you and places his drink onto the table.

"What are you reading?"

"Oh, well.. Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen," You look down to your book, slightly embarrassed.

"Good book," He replies.

You awkwardly hum in acknowledgement, drumming your fingers on the table to the rhythm of a song stuck in your head.

"Frankie Valli?" The man says.

You look up and stop drumming your fingers, looking at him in confusion.

"Sorry, but it uh, it sounded like you were drumming the rhythm of Sherry by Frankie Valli,"

"Oh! Yes I was, sorry I was just confused, you like Frankie Valli?" You say, a little too excitedly.

"I do! My name's Ladybug by the way, its a bit weird I know but," The man introduces himself, trailing off slightly.

"I'm Y/n, its nice to officially meet you, Ladybug,"

Ladybug smiles.

After a couple of times seeing you there and interacting with you, he might ask you subtly of your single; of course checking for a wedding or engagement ring first.

He gives off awkwardly confident autistic vibes, I'm right and I know it.

"Hey, uh, I don't mean to sound weird or anything, but I was wondering if uh, maybe you we're single and if so would you be willing to, I dunno maybe have dinner with me sometime? And you totally don't have to if you don't want to if by chance you are single but uh, yeah.."

He's so cute.

He would take you to a nice little restaurant, and he waits for you at the door with a bouquet of flowers, (which we all know would be something like peonies,) he pushes your seat in for you, lets you order first and everything, he would be such a gentleman.

After the date before you get into your car and leave (Which he very nicely escorted you to,) he asks you very nicely if you would like to go on another with him sometime, to which you say yes to.

Say a couple dates later, you guys are now a thing.

When you go to his house he cooks for you.

This man would be such a good cook but it being Ladybug, he would definitely burn something on accident.

After a while of being together, he finally tells you about his job.

You love this man so much and he's so sweet that you find it impossible for him to be an assassin. But you try to be as accepting of it as you can be.

You're more worried than anything now, to be honest.

After the whole entire bullet train mission when he gets back with all these cuts and bruises, you patch him up and such, obviously upset he came back so hurt.

You were currently sitting on the couch of your apartment, reading a book.

You hadn't seen Ladybug in a while as he was on a mission in Japan. It was only supposed to be for a couple of days, but you were very worried being that it was so far away.

He would text you updates and such regularly, but for the past day you had gotten nothing from him which worried you even more.

Suddenly you hear a knock on your door. You get up from your spot and place your book on the coffee table, face down as to not loose your page.

You look through the peephole to see its a teenage boy in a Domino's uniform with a box of pizza.

You open the door, telling the boy to give you a second as you rush to the kitchen island and pull a 5 dollar bill out of your wallet, walking back and handing it to him, getting the box as well and closing the door.

You walk back to your spot, placing the box down and opening it, the savory smell filling the area.

You take a slice, and bring it to your face, taking a bite as the mix of the gooey cheese, tangy sauce, and crispy crust mix together perfectly on your taste buds.

Another knock on your door rudly interrupts your joy in eating, you walk back, not even bothering to check who it is.

You open the door to see a bruised and bloodied up Ladybug at your door sheepishly smiling, a tired look evident on his face.

"Oh my god, sweetheart are you okay? Come in here," You say, gently pushing Ladybug into your apartment, sitting him on the couch where you were.

"What happened? Are you okay?"

"I'm fine, don't worry. Just a few cuts and bruises is all," Ladybug replies, a soft smile on his face as to reassure you he really is alright.

"Let me clean you up, stay right here." You go to your restroom and look under the sink for your first aid kit, taking a bottle of rubbing alcohol as well.

You go back to the living room and begin to clean up the cuts on his face.

Ladybug was looking at you lovingly as you did so.

"I love you," Ladybug blurts out.

You stop what you were doing and look at him, your face growing warmer by the second.

That was the first time either of you had said "I love you," so you were processing it still.

"Sorry, it just kinda slipped ou-" Ladybug turns his face away, a slight blush spreading across his face.

"I love you, too." You say, finally replying and giving him a kiss on his cheek.

He loves you to pieces, so he would never yell at you during arguments of any sort, but with his anger issues that he's been trying oh so hard to get controlled, he slips up sometimes.

Hes profusely apologising, after he realises the mistake he made.

This poor guy is just kicking himself for it.

You assure him that its quite alright and that you understand.

He still gets you something nice as an apology. Such as flowers, maybe even sweets.

Such a sweetheart.

Who is he?

Gilear Faeth is Fig Faeth's adoptive dad and Sandra Lynn Faeth's ex-husband. He is a wood elf who's lost some hair since his divorce and now wears it in a comb-over, which is a unique look on an elf. He's got a little bit of a paunch. He is often described as being sad and pitiable. He wears a short-sleeved king button up shirt which is often stained, usually with yogurt, but one time it was beans.

Why is he the NPC of All Time?

"Do I even need to elaborate?? If there was ever an NPC to NPC it is hands down no contest, announce it now the winner is Gilear. That man spilt so much pudding on himself, he died more times than I can remember, he fumbled the bag on like 3 milfs. An icon. A legend. The chosen one."

Who is she?

Ayda Aguefort (pronounced EYE-da) is a half-phoenix divination wizard and a librarian in the Compass Points Library in Leviathan. She is the daughter of Arthur Aguefort and girlfriend of Fig Faeth.

Why is she the NPC of All Time?
