So I’ve been trying to figure out how Murph’s brand of shithead guy feels different than those that I’ve seen from other of the Dimension 20 Intrepid Heroes/Brennan, and I think it’s the matter of consequences.

Because rather than being intercepted on their arc towards their worst nature and guided through friendship toward a better choice, Kugrash and Gerard were already AT their worst nature, and they ended up eating shit because of it.

They were shitheads, and they suffered the consequences of being shitheads, and THEN they chose to be better. Their redemption arc didn’t help them escape consequence. Nor did consequences make them double down on being awful. It was a critical part of their journey to be better.

Even in Cody’s character growth, where he is intercepted before he becomes the worst version of himself, it’s still just one long humiliation conga. Consequence after consequence after consequence. And he learns from it.

And I think there’s something… important in that. Because yes, community will always make a better choice easier, but Murph’s characters constantly facing brutal consequences highlight the fact that it still has to be THEIR choice, THEIR responsibility to be better.
