Katherine would be lying if she said it all started very innocently. 

It didn’t start innocently at all. It started with David Jacobs washing dishes and her husband ogling him from the dinner table of the cramped Jacobs family apartment, biting his lip like a teenage schoolboy looking at a pretty flash of skirt.

Three things happened in quick succession within her mind. First came absolutely affronted shock and rage. There was no way Jack Kelly, her husband of seven months, was openly admiring someone else like that. Then came a moment of sudden realization that practically slapped her upside the face– Jack’s particularly strong soft spot for David began to make sense. Of course. He was attracted to the other man, and probably had been for the entirety of their friendship, which explained the constant touching and staring. Third and finally came a moment that sounded something like this within the busy recesses of her mind:

Oh. 

And then: Jack might be onto something.

Because David was an awfully pretty man. Katherine would be telling another lie if she said she hadn’t thought such a thing before. But she assumed most people just acknowledged that as a universal truth– David Jacobs was pretty. He was the classic ideal of pretty, the type of man Renaissance artists would’ve painstakingly committed to memory with paint and clay. He had an alluring bone structure and beautiful curly hair, dark as chocolate, with freckles scattered over just about every inch of pale skin. He had rosy lips and he blushed easily, and he was slim and tall with a nice build and excellent posture to match. The most breathtaking feature, in her humble opinion, was his eyes. Round and wide and green, ever-so expressive and framed with thick, dark lashes. He had gorgeous eyes. And, in Jack’s defense, with the sleeves of David's shirt shucked up around his elbows and his elegant hands scrubbing at the dishes, fingers clenched around the porcelain and sponge, glimmering water drawing out his protruding veins, he was certainly a vision.

And then, after all three realizations had passed, Katherine Kelly-Plumber decided that she found both of these men attractive. Husband and husband’s best friend. There was no reason she shouldn’t do something about that, right?

(Save for every societal custom she’d been taught since birth, of course, but Katherine had a habit of defying those frivolous rules, anyways.)

Always a woman of her word, moments later, she found herself perching her chin on Jack’s broad shoulder and looping her arms around his waist. Eyes trained on David, who was blissfully and obliviously washing dishes just a yard away, accompanied by the soundtrack of his family bustling about around them, she pressed her lips to her husband’s ear and spoke softly.

“David’s handsome, isn’t he?”

Jack tensed beneath her fingers, and she pressed her nose and lips against the fabric of his well-worn shirt just to hide her own smile at the way his breath hitched. “Wh- who, Dave? I– I don’t–”

“I think so, too.” Her voice, tight with excitement and carefully quiet amidst the hustle and neverending movement of the apartment, just barely brushed against the shell of his ear. “You’re attracted to him, Jack. Don’t deny it.”

Jack’s hands, calloused and tan, carefully closed around her wrists. His voice became a soft growl and she watched as his pupils seemed to blossom within those honey-brown eyes, until nothing but a rim of brown, dark as coffee, remained. “He ain’t hard to look at, Kath.”

“No, he certainly isn’t.” 

Then, David turned to them and smiled that anxious little smile of his– the one that crinkled the corners of his impossibly green eyes– and Katherine wondered how she hadn’t openly ruminated upon his beauty before. Both she and Jack returned the smile nearly immediately, though Kath could’ve laughed as she wondered what David would do if he found out what they were really whispering about. Him and his soap-covered hands, sweat beading on his forehead, collar just barely unbuttoned...

Not hard to look at at all. Jack was right. 

So no, it didn’t start innocently. It started with dishes and a crowded apartment, and a brief conversation whispered beneath the noise of it all. At that moment, Katherine Kelly-Pulitzer turned into a woman with a plan.

just have this idea swimming around my head of these three in canon era and the trials and tribulations they'd have to go through as a throuple. they all have so many insecurities and roadblocks and they all have two hands! so why not be together? part of me wants to make this a full time story committment bc trust me there is a LOT more of this sitting in my drafts... lmk if you'd be interested :D

transmasc davey who gets to explore himself in college, who starts T freshman year and gets involved with activist groups on campus, who shares an apartment with jack starting sophomore year, who is a cat dad to an awful little kitten, who gets top surgery after saving for years and years as a college graduation gift to himself, who wears a suit to his wedding and helps organize pride events every summer and works with queer youth and marginalized communities and spends his life using his voice to advocate and build community and stick up for the little guys.
