so we all know jack kelly’s main color is blue right? and i would said katherine is most definitely an orange character. DAVID SHOULD BE YELLOW.

it just fits so well with both of their colors and literally ties them together. it represents caution ?!?! who’s the most cautious person ever? david. intelligence ?!?! we already know the answer to that one

this is just a little piece of some seriously extensive writing I’ve done for these three— I think I’ve probably written like 10k words for them that I’ve yet to share!

they are sort of tipsy in this scene, but all of these characters are 21+ (actually close to their thirties), so the alcohol consumption is totally legal.

the characters aren’t totally wasted and the alcohol is barely mentioned in this little section, but I figured I’d leave a warning!

anyways please enjoy these few words! I don’t have anything new to post today so I figured I’d share some writing I enjoyed doing.

(for context, davey did not confess feelings for them. he just ranted about how he’s attempted dating and it just hasn’t worked for him. the end of that rant is where the scenelet starts.)

“It’s not that I don’t love people. I do. I know I do. Fuck, I’m almost positive that I’m bi. And I know I want— I want to be with people. I wanna date and all of that stuff, I really do. But I think something’s wrong with me. I’m too— I’m too weird, or something.”

By that point, Davey was gesticulating wildly as he spoke, face flushed and eyes bright with passion. He’d shifted positions in his chair and was leaning towards them, one leg tucked beneath himself and the other still tossed over the armrest. She’d seen him frustrated like this on multiple occasions, with tears shimmering in his expressive eyes and movements sharp and angry, but she’d never seen him vibrating with such a mix of shame and relief before. She wanted to hug him and hide him from the world forever. She wanted to tug her hands through his hair and call him hers and tell him he’d never have to worry about assholes who didn’t listen to him again. Because she’d listen. She knew she would.

Instead she settled with something simple: “Davey, that’s ridiculous. It’s absolutely not your fault. You just haven’t found the right person yet.”

“What if there isn’t a right person?” Then he frowned, and Kath felt her heart shatter in a million different ways.

“Oh, don’t say that. I know you’re gonna find someone.” She held a hand out and after a moment, he stretched his own arm across the gap to take it.

Kath tugged until he was stumbling to his feet, and from there, she pulled him down onto the couch where she and Jack were already curled together. He fell on top of her with a soft ‘oof’, which made all three of them laugh. Davey’s weight was a welcome blanket and she threw one arm around his waist, using the other to guide his face into the curve of Jack’s neck. Davey’s shoulder had landed just beneath her chin and she pressed her nose and lips against it, breathing in the smell of his laundry detergent and the unique notes of papery books and vanilla shampoo. How anyone could take someone like Davey for granted baffled Kath. He was a wonderful human.

She watched Jack’s hand find its way to Davey’s curls and the taller boy relaxed nearly immediately, feeling almost boneless against them. After about a moment in the embrace, Jack smiled slightly and tilted his head to press against Davey’s hair. “Can I take your glasses off, Dave?”

Davey gave a grunt of affirmation, so Jack carefully extracted the glasses from their tangle of limbs and carefully set them on the coffee table. Kath couldn’t hide her pleased smile. Somehow she’d landed two of the cuddliest men she knew as her boyfriend and best friend, and she absolutely wasn’t complaining.

“You smell good, Jack.” Davey’s voice vibrated his chest, words slightly slurred (he wouldn’t have said something so honest if he was sober). Kath watched as Jack smiled.

“Thanks, Davey. You too, man.”

Davey laughed a slightly drunken giggle and one of his hands slid down to Kath’s wrist, tangling with her fingers. She immediately took his hand in hers and closed her eyes, savoring the contact.

Soon Davey’s breaths began to even out and Kath and Jack followed suit, relaxing to the tune of the soft country music playing behind them. She was actually starting to enjoy the deep, crooning voices, but she’d never tell Jack that. She’d never hear the end of it and he’d be begging to blast his country favorites every day. Lowered inhibitions led her to gently nudge Jack. “Hey, Davey likes head scratches.”

“Kath, don’t—“ David whined, but his protest shut down the moment Jack’s fingertips disappeared into his hair and dragged carefully against his scalp. He made a very un-Davey-like noise and closed his eyes, which forced Katherine to suppress a giggle.

Jack laughed softly. “I think I found your factory reset, Davey.”

“Mmph, hush.” He muttered gruffly, and the other two shared a quiet laugh, because Jack was absolutely right. “You’re just weirdly good at this.”

Jack smiled slightly and wrapped his other arm securely around Kath’s waist, sandwiched between her body and the fabric of Davey’s t-shirt. “I’m a man of many talents. Now you just shut your eyes and nap, Dave. Stop thinkin’ so hard— I can hear your brain goin’ a mile a minute.”

“Yeah.” Kath gave his hand a squeeze. “Thanks for being honest with us, by the way. About the dating stuff. I know that took a lot.”

“I… I guess I should’ve told you sooner.” He gave the smallest shrug, just barely shifting on top of her. Kath rubbed her thumb in a small circle against his palm.

“No, you were waiting until you were ready. I had no right to be offended. Let’s just— let’s just leave it be for now. I’m comfy.”

“Okay—“

He started pushing himself up out of their little pile and earned noises of protest from both Jack and Kath, who pulled him back down with whatever hold they had on him. David burst into drunken giggles, his chest shaking against Kath. She scoffed. “I said I was comfy!”

“But I’m crushing you!”

“I like being crushed. Now, shhh.”

Jack copied her shushing and once Davey’s fit of giggles died, Jack resumed his head scratches and Kath curled up between her boys, feeling more at home than she’d felt in a long time. Davey started drifting off, and he fell asleep long before Jack or Kath came close. The last movement she remembered was Jack sleepily reaching for their remote to turn off the music.

After that it was just warmth and sleep, and waking up sweaty and tangled and content in the morning with a hangover to boot.

Rocky Horror Picture Show Newsies AU

Hi, I realized today that all the characters from newsies have to be in a production of the Rocky Horror Picture Show and literally came out of retirement to write this down. Here’s the deal.

This is a college production with a shadow cast: shows are the last two weekends before Christmas break. Jack and Katharine are seniors and have been involved since they were freshmen. This time, they are reprising their roles as Brad and Janet, but their friend Medda, who always played Frank-N-Furter, just graduated and won’t be in the production this year.

Sarah is Magenta. Her brother David is only a sophomore and a rocky horror virgin (and the other kind too; in fact, he has never been kissed.) He decided it would be fun to try out for the criminologist, but he got cast as Frank instead, much to everyone’s surprise. He was horrified at first and thought about refusing the role, but ended up getting really into it. In his platform heels, he is about 7 feet tall and he looks amazing in lipstick and rubber gloves!

Racetrack plays Columbia and Spot plays Eddie. (Race is a trans guy and Spot is a cis girl; it is deliberately gender-bent casting.) Morris Delancey plays Riff Raff. He and Sarah really don’t like each other, which gives all their scenes together a special frisson. He doesn’t know any of his lines (true, he doesn’t have to say them, he just mouths them along with the actors on screen, but still!) and keeps messing up his cues, which offends Sarah’s sensibilities. His brother Oscar thinks the whole thing is stupid, but has been putting in lots of hours helping Morris practice.

You might think Crutchie would be stuck being the Crim because of the wheelchair, but no! He is Rocky. He performs totally naked except for a little gold loincloth. Elmer, who is in charge of props, helped Crutchie paint his crutches gold using paint they thought was water soluble. Turns out it is permanent, oops. Finch is the one who ended up being the Crim, which really suits his personality. He was set on the idea of having a fake mustache, even though the Crim doesn’t even have a mustache in the film. Elmer was like, sure, whatever, go nuts.

Buttons is doing costumes. He loaned Spot a leather jacket with shoulder pads from his personal wardrobe, which he will definitely never see again after the show wraps.

Darcy is the director; she is a theater major and is way too serious about everything. The cast tends to just ignore her, like Charlie Brown directing the pageant in “A Charlie Brown Christmas.” Seitz does tech for the show. Specs is that guy who says he has stage fight, but he sits in the front row at every rehearsal and performance and yells at all the callbacks, even the really weird ones that refer to things that none of them have ever heard of. (I might do a part two of this post which is all of Specs’ favorite callbacks, which of course is really just my favorite callbacks.)

Albert sells little prop bags of playing cards and party hats and toast at the door. They are also the one who asks attendees if they have seen Ricky Horror before. If anyone says no, Albert marks that person’s forehead with a red v of lipstick and later, they pull all the virgins up on stage during the preshow for public embarrassment. They are way too into this task. The preshow consists of Romeo and Jojo in wigs and teddies and fishnets, dancing to the original Eartha Kitt “Santa Baby,” mugging and shaking their hips and pushing each other violently off of Santa’s lap. Bill Hearst plays Santa.

Jack and Katherine have been dating for years, by the way, but Katherine has a crush on Darcy and maybe also on Oscar Delancey. Jack is ostensibly straight, but he and Crutchie made out once on the roof of the Life Sciences building after pulling an all-nighter. And Jack really, really likes David. Really likes him. Yeah.

Tommy Boy and Hannah and Henry and Mush and anyone elseI forgot are all Transylvanians. Practically the whole cast were already friends with each other except for David, like I said, and Spot, who showed up to the auditions out of nowhere and has an amazing alto and scares the shit out of everyone. She is the star forward on their school’s winning soccer team. Spot didn’t tell her teammates she was doing the show. She keeps missing practice to go to rehearsal or missing rehearsal to go to practice. Race, who always thought he was 100% gay, is fascinated by her.

Weisel is the head of the campus Buildings and Grounds department. He keeps accidentally-on-purpose forgetting to unlock the classroom where they rehearse. And Joe Pulitzer is the assistant dean who tells them they are not allowed to throw toast or other food at the screen in the auditorium because it could attract vermin.

What will happen when he tries to shut down the show? What will happen when the girls from the soccer team follow Spot to the dress rehearsal? What will happen when David is struck by debilitating stage fright, right before the curtain goes up on opening night? Who will make out at the off-campus cast party????
