I heard them yesterday but they didn’t come down, but today was the big day. Ragnar and Lagertha, the Bluebirds, brought their first set of babies to the backyard (her new nest is almost done too). I saw three, but I was keeping a distance, so I am not sure how many there are. They are as adorable as ever, and my heart is full of joy. Ragnar made a big display at the pool too, showing that wonderful slow moving of the wings that is so typical for Bluebirds. The baby bunny, a baby Robin and the baby Grack also paid a visit, and I think the livestream is going to be a lot of fun in the coming weeks.

Quick and easy woodpecker feeder
In the ongoing effort to feed the woodland beasties (and make the back porch even more exciting with additional bird feeders), I was browsing through my copy of “Projects for the Birder’s Garden” and found this cute and easy recipe for a woodpecker feeder.  Featuring:
- one cedar shingle - available in stacks at most home improvement stores, or as single small planks wherever you usually get supplies for barbecuing.  Perhaps you’re even luckier (and more zero-waste friendly) and you have a few extras lying around from a recent home improvement project.  Conversely, I’m pretty sure any thin, flat piece of scrap wood would work too -- just make sure it’s untreated and chemical free for your feathered friends!
- peanut butter (I used chunky, smooth is good too)
- recycled aluminum foil (this is optional, but insures the oil from the peanut butter doesn’t seep through the back of the shingle)
The ingredients (plus one kitten who’s sure he’s the most helpful fellow around):

The ingredients (minus said helpful kitten):

How to:
1) If using aluminum foil, wrap a piece slightly larger than your cedar shingle around the back of the shingle and press approximately 1/4″ edge around the front of the single to hold it in place
2) Hammer shingle to an outdoor porch or railing
3) Apply peanut butter
4) Wait

Approximately 2 hours later and the results speak for themselves:

Voracious little woodpeckers, indeed!  (I suspect some squirrels were also involved in the denuding of this shingle, though I didn’t catch anyone in the act.)
** Recycling tip: Most towns do accept recycled aluminum foil in recycling bins.  Just remember to rinse off residue from foods before recycling that foil! **
