There are about 5,300 species of passeriformes, or perching birds. Here, we see a Goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis) feeding on the seeds of a teasel plant.

Here is a beautiful European goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis) visiting a dried sunflower in my garden !
I was so happy to see one ! It has been 12 years since the last came in my garden !
This beautiful bird is a wonderful singer and sadly, it is one of the cause of its disparition in Europe. This species is really liked in many countries as an encaged songbird and so, is one of the most trafficked animal in Europe. On the black market, a single bird's value varies from 150 to 450 €. Last October, the French Office for Biodiversity (OFB, roughly the environment police) dismantled a parisian trafficking network, released 350 birds and seized 9 000 €. In 2022, the swiss police saved 800 birds, amongst them 200 where native to Europe.
I personnaly met a French officier who took part in stopping such traffic.
To finish this post, in French, this bird's name is "Chardonneret élégant" which translates to "Fancy thistle eater" !

Colourful - European Goldfinch by Georgie Alexon
Via Flickr:
This European Goldfinch photograph was taken in the Tagus Estuary in Portugal. An interesting fact of this colourful bird is he goldfinch’s scientific name is that thier scientific name, Carduelis carduelis is derived from the Latin word for thistle – Carduus – the seeds of which are one of the goldfinch’s favourite foods. They are able to avoid thistle spikes and access these tricky to reach seeds because of their long fine beaks. -Carduelis carduelis

a bit dirty but otherwise gorgeous, showing the yellow leading edge these birds have on their wings clearly. almost definitely belongs to one of the two that sing near my window
