"Troop Zero" is a heartwarming 2019 comedy-drama film directed by Bert & Bertie and written by Lucy Alibar. Set in rural Georgia in the 1970s, the story follows a misfit girl named Christmas Flint (played by McKenna Grace) who dreams of communicating with extraterrestrial life. When she learns about a Birdie Scout Jamboree where the winning troop can have their voices recorded on NASA's Golden Record, she forms her own ragtag Birdie Scout troop.

Richard Wayne Van Dyke (13 December 1925) is an American actor, entertainer and comedian. His work spans screen and stage, and his awards include six Emmy Awards, a Grammy Award, a Golden Globe Award, and a Tony Award. He was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame in 1995 and the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1993, and has been honored with the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award in 2013, the Kennedy Center Honors in 2020, and was recognized as a Disney Legend in 1998.

Van Dyke began his career as an entertainer on radio, television and in nightclubs. He made his Broadway debut in the musical revue The Girls Against the Boys (1959). The following year he starred as Albert F. Peterson in the original production of Bye Bye Birdie (1960), a role which earned him the Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical. He returned to Broadway playing Harold Hill in a revival of The Music Man (1980).

On television, he became a household name portraying Rob Petrie in the CBS sitcom The Dick Van Dyke Show (1961–1966) which also earned him three Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. He guest-starred on shows such as Columbo (1974) and The Carol Burnett Show (1977), and he starred in The New Dick Van Dyke Show (1971–1974), Diagnosis: Murder (1993–2001), and Murder 101 (2006–2008).

He starred as Bert, the cockney chimney sweep in the Disney movie musical Mary Poppins (1964) for which he was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. He is also known for starring in the movie musicals Bye Bye Birdie (1963) and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968), as well as the comedy-drama The Comic (1969). In his later years, Van Dyke has taken supporting roles in films such as Dick Tracy (1990), Curious George (2006), Night at the Museum (2006), its 2014 sequel, and Mary Poppins Returns (2018).

Well, if there wasn’t a cuter more heartwarming movie with fantastic, pull-at-your-heartstrings acting for today, I haven’t found it, yet. I cried at the end like the baby girl I am. It was an ugly cry that only my pups were allowed to witness.

25. senseless

"This is senseless!" I protest as the dark-haired Miqo'te I foolishly employ from time to time grabs my hand and pulls me down a Limsan street. Overhead, the sky is as close to pitch black as it can get without completely committing to the endeavor. Big, thick clouds blanket the canvas blotting out any sign of stars above. There's a faint ring of silver gray where the moon tries to peek through, not yet defeated but still clearly struggling against the clouds.

Lia, or Malika as I've heard some call her, doesn't seem bothered. She and I have worked together long enough that I have to accept that the more senseless something is, the more likely she is to do it.

"Senseless?" She asks with a laugh. "Birdy,"

My name is Sibert. She refuses to call me that- specifically because it annoys me that she won't. I wonder not for the first and certainly not for the last time why I put up with her annoying and disrespectful behavior at all.

She continues after giving me a chance to grimace at this new nickname. "What's senseless is that you hadn't asked that girl out for so long because you were afraid of looking stupid and when you finally did ask her out- you asked her to go dancing with you. When you've never danced before!"

I've no argument here. She's right, of course. The girl in question is a long time customer of my business. Well, my legitimate business, the home goods store. Not the crime one that she hopefully does not know about and hopefully does not ever know about.

"I wasn't thinking," I admit. "It just came out." I mock myself. "Do you want to go dancing this weekend? Perhaps after that we can go rock climbing? Or maybe walk a tightrope together over a volcano? Or any other stupid activities I don't know how to do and that terrify me?"

"Wow, Sibs! Great imagination! I'd take you up on those for what it's worth."

"But you're crazy."

"Fair point." Malika stops so I stop. I only now register where we've ended up. Lower deck near the water.

"No," I hear myself protest. Gods, my voice is so whiny. Who would honestly want to dance with me? It's a miracle she said yes. Or a curse. I can't dance so I'm leaning towards curse. "This is too dangerous. I can't swim. Let's go somewhere else."

Malika raises her eyebrows and grins. It's never good when she does that. "And you call me crazy! You live near a beautiful ocean and you've never wanted to swim in it? Doesn't swim, doesn't dance, doesn't rock climb, doesn't tightrope over active volcanoes…" She chuckles. "What does he do?"

"Fret mostly," I admit. "Make wooden chairs. Do math. Fret some more."

Her grin grows wider. "After this dance lesson- which is taking place right here- broaden your ambitions, Bert. Make small wooden boats. Then get in them. Stop ignoring the ocean just because she scares you. Ask her to dance next."

"That's highly unlikely," I answer. I let Malika maneuver my hands to prepare for this dance near water's edge. She's often a horrible thorn in my side- complicating just as many jobs as she completes- and I frequently think about cutting her from my business entirely. But out here in the dark she laughs, not unkindly, at my clumsy footing as she carefully counts the dance steps for me. She even does her best to protect me from falling into the water when I stumble and doesn’t make a big deal out of the effort or mock me when I’m visibly shaken.

It's a rare and surprisingly gentle side of her I see out here illuminated in the faint glow of Limsa's lamps and the sliver of the silver moon as together they fight against the darkness she has us dancing in. And I find myself thinking, just for a moment, that all the worrying, fretting, and angsting I do- and all the time I’d spent not learning to dance… well…

Maybe that's what's been senseless.

In the past, I've been a bit secretive about it just because even though I know it's silly, the personal AU is, well, something that is quite personal to me, lol! I know they're fictional, but something about putting kids in fics without their consent feels ethically wrong, but I know it's silly and they are fictional, so yes, if you'd like, I'll leave below the cut the kiddos, for anyone who might be curious :)

Me & Philly's kids in birth order:

Asher (Ash)

Eldest son, Mama's boy to the Extreme. It's not that he dislikes Flip, he just likes me more. He's very shy and soft spoken, is a fantastic reader and is really good at math. Right now when he grows up he wants to go into the film industry but just because he likes being where I am. Every day is a good day for Ash, he is so sweet and sunshiney, nothing can bring him down. He's so positive and happy, like genuinely a happy kid, his smile is infectious and I'm In Love.

Bertha (Bertie)

Second child, lil Miss Bert has her eyes set on Olympic gold from day one. She is determined to be an Olympic figure skater. She loves to dance and perform little shows, she's a fabulous swimmer and loves science, but absolutely hates math, so that's proving to be sort of an issue. Birdie is the Boss, and she lets everyone know it. She has an attitude but she's almost always right so, she's allowed to have her attitude. She's bossy and we love for her #GaslightGatekeepGirlboss (this is a joke don't come for me)

The triplets:

Miriam (Micki)

Micki is just like her Mama -- bossy, pushy, and loud. She wants to be a senator when she grows up and dammit she's got the drive I'll tell you that! She's curious, precocious, very nosy, likes to be told what's going on all the time and gets annoyed when things are happening that she's out of the loop on. She is sarcastic and wicked smart, she's the only one who can beat Ezzie in chess.

Ezra (Ezzie)

Ezzie is Flip 2.0! He's the only one of the kids that actually looks like Flip lol, the rest are blonde like me. Ezzie is...a Weird kid, and we have no choice but to stan. He wants to be a criminal prosecutor when he grows up, and often puts various members of the family on mock trial for their crimes (such as when he put @autumnlovesadam's Ben on the stand for the alleged stealing of cookies from the cookie jar). He likes to wear formal clothing all the time, except for when he is doing outdoorsy woodland lumberjack things with his best friend Flip.

Ruth (Toothie)

Ruth is absolutely 100% the most theatrical, dramatic, performer in the family. Part of this comes from being the youngest of 5, and part of it comes from the innate Jewish need to be the center of attention. She and Bert choreograph recitals together of their own accord and will interrupt any sort of social gathering to perform their own songs and dances. She's determined to have a Tony by the time she's 30 and really who am I to tell her no? (She got her nickname Toothie because she got her teeth so early lol)
