“oh, and now she’s puttin’ the blame on me! when she was the one actin’ all mean to poor ole dad.” batting his long lashes, he puts on his sweetest puppy dog face in an attempt to appear innocent when she grabs his arm. he fully expects her to pinch it and is surprised when she doesn’t. “that means our little family is complete. mom and dad and their two babies… and one goat, five horses, rabbits, a flock of hens… wouldn’t want to have it any other way,” the cowboy muses with a laugh, his fingertip tapping the tip of lucy gray’s nose. it’s all play pretend and he knows it, but when he looks into her chocolate hues, this unfamiliar feeling of comfort and warmth engulfs his whole body at once, coiling around him like a well-worn, cozy blanket and causing a genuinely happy smile to appear on his lips. “a song about my eyes?” for a second there he’s not sure if she’s joking or not, it’s such a ridiculous thought — songs and poems are supposed to be written about truly special things, not ordinary eyes like his. “if you wrote one, i’d think you were tryin’ to romance me.” he teases, all because he doesn’t know how to handle compliments, not when they’re coming from lucy gray. “says the girl with eyes that turn into a sunset of their own as evening approaches,” he says quietly, the tips of his ears tingling as he turns into a star-struck, sheepish teenager, developing a crush on the girl who’s so out of his league that he has no right even thinking about her. “but thank you. it’s the nicest thing anyone’s ever said to me.” kindness and pureness, it means a lot to him because he’s always been a profound believer that eyes are the windows to people’s souls. if she sees him as kind and pure, it means he’s a good person, even though he’s taken a wrong turn here and there.
“you need to make up your mind, my dearest lucy gray,” he coos, beaming as he manages to coax a fit of giggles out of her. he watches as her dainty fingers curl swiftly around his hand and force him to give her ribs a break, butterflies fluttering in the pit of his stomach at the mere sight — he finds the size difference between their bodies incredibly attractive, her hands looking even smaller and more dainty when compared to his. “you just spent half an hour tellin’ me where babies come from. you can’t try and confuse me by sayin’ they grow in the garden. how would that even work? i plant a cabbage and get a baby at the end of august if i water it every day?” he shakes his head, but his eyes are bright, infatuated with the girl sitting in front of him. he slowly turns his hand, palm up so that hers can rest in it. “mhm, didn’t sound like nothin’ to me. sounded like you were callin’ me the opposite of the best husband in the world.” he refuses to cuss in front of children, even if said children are just dolls, even in jest. “hey, now that’s so mean… i think i’ll have to tickle this mean bone out of you.” it’s an empty threat for now, just because he doesn’t want to let go of her hand. “rawr, rawr, rawrrrr.” always the first to goof around and play along, he roars pitifully, hoping to sound like a heartbroken dinosaur that got called names by his own birdie wife. “actually, my ma said i weighed more than nine pounds when i was born, i only got lanky when i turned about four and started growing and growing and growing. but before that? and i know it’s hard to believe ‘cause look at me now, the body of a greek god,” he laughs, acting obnoxious and lifting his shirt up to expose his toned stomach, he might be malnourished but at least his muscles are more prominent now, “but i was a pig when i was about the same age as our babies.” he lowers his shirt when she puts the dolls in his face and leans down to plant a bunch of sweet kisses on the newborn’s face.
"shhh, you don't bring our children into this. especially when you was just actin' up." lucy gray scolds, gently grabbing his arm to listen to her. "that's a wonderful thing, then. how we agree on this." that she doesn't want more or less and neither does he, they can meet right in the middle and both be happy. it was all pretend, yet it made her heart grow fonder for him; for giving her a moment where a mom and dad can be peaceful and happy with each other. something that she lacked in her childhood, from the perspective of a child. if she could be a real mother with a partner who had a compatible mindset... this must be what it would feel like. that was scarily enough to send her heart in overdrive for getting odd feelings fluttering in her belly for him. "it would take a song or two to describe all the things i think. but i like... that i see kindness and a pureness–" something she admired most what she saw in his eyes, because those two things made him feel trustworthy and like a good human, "a pureness as pure as the seas behind the pretty sea color in your eyes." she sweetly states, saying it as she thought it. shyness tinging her cheeks in a soft blush, but a confident smile stretching her lips.
"oh, is it? as far as i know these babies grew out back in my tomato garden." small shoulders shrugged, about to playfully scold him more for accusing her being some sinner before the unexpected happens. her body jolts, giggles turning into harder laughter erupting out of her at the ticklish sensations, the amusement of him calling her little birdie and the way he played along. "nothinggg, i called you nothin'." both hands grab his hand, holding it hostage so he doesn't kill her side any longer. "if you can't understand bird language, well... that's on you." she gently laughed, letting his hand go and picking her doll and bottle back up. "well, you didn't used to be this big. you were once teeny tiny as these babies." she held her doll up, annoyingly putting him in his face.
#billysgirllol#mood!! what a mood!! 😭😭😭💕💕💕!!!#bluebird 😭 little birdie 😭 BYE and how he’s playing along 😭#I LOVE THEM YOUR HONOR ID DIE FOR THEM#these are the happiest moments of billy’s life 😭 he can be carefree and feels safe around her NDNS#BYE no one’s ever seen this side of him 😭 it’s reserved for little birdie

Propaganda
Marlene Dietrich (Shanghai Express, Witness for the Prosecution, Morocco)—Bisexual icon, super hot when dressed both masculine and feminine, lived up her life in the queer Berlin scene of the 1920s, central to the 'sewing circle' of the secret sapphic actresses of Old Hollywood, refused lucrative offers by the Nazis and helped Jews and others under persecution to escape Nazi Germany, the love of my life
Xia Meng, also known as Hsia Moog or Miranda Yang (Sunrise, Bride Hunter)—For those who are familiar with Hong Kong's early cinema, Xia Meng is THE leading woman of an era, the earliest "silver-screen goddess", "The Great Beauty" and "Audrey Hepburn of the East". Xia Meng starred in 38 films in her 17-year career, and famously had rarely any flops, from her first film at the age of 18 to her last at the age of 35. She was a rare all-round actress in Mandarin-language films, acting, singing, and dancing with an enchanting ease in films of diverse genres, from contemporary drama to period operas. She was regarded as the "crown princess" among the "Three Princesses of the Great Wall", the iconic leading stars of the Great Wall Movie Enterprises, which was Hong Kong's leading left-wing studio in the 1950s-60s. At the time, Hong Kong cinema had only just taken off, but Xia Meng's influence had already spread out to China, Singapore, etc. Overseas Chinese-language magazines and newspapers often featured her on their covers. The famous HK wuxia novelist Jin Yong had such a huge crush on her that he made up a whole fake identity as a nobody-screenwriter to join the Great Wall studio just so he can write scripts for her. He famously said, "No one has really seen how beautiful Xi Shi (one of the renowned Four Beauties of ancient China) is, I think she should be just like Xia Meng to live up to her name." In 1980, she returned to the HK film industry by forming the Bluebird Movie Enterprises. As a producer with a heart for the community, she wanted to make a film on the Vietnam War and the many Vietnam War refugees migrating to Hong Kong. She approached director Ann Hui and produced the debut film Boat People (1982), a globally successful movie and landmark feature for Hong Kong New Wave, which won several awards including the best picture and best director in the second Hong Kong Film Award. Years later, Ann Hui looked back on her collaboration with Xia Meng, "I'm very grateful to her for allowing me to make what is probably the best film I've ever made in my life."
This is round 5 of the tournament. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. Please reblog with further support of your beloved hot sexy vintage woman.
[additional propaganda submitted under the cut.]
Xia Meng:
Marlene Dietrich:
ms dietrich....ms dietrich pls.....sit on my face
its marlene dietrich!!!! queer legend, easily the hottest person to ever wear a tuxedo, that hot hot voice, those glamorous glamorous movies…. most famously she starred in a string of movies directed by josef von sternberg throughout the 1930s, beginning with the blue angel which catapulted her to stardom in the role of the cabaret singer lola lola. known for his exquisite eye for lighting, texture, imagery, von sternberg devoted himself over the course of their collaborations to acquiring exceptional skill at photographing dietrich herself in particular, a worthy direction in which to expend effort im sure we can all agree. she collaborated with many other great directors of the era as well, including rouben mamoulian (song of songs), frank borzage (desire), ernst lubitsch (angel), fritz lang (rancho notorious), and billy wilder (witness for the prosecution). the encyclopedia britannica entry im looking at while compiling this propaganda describes her as having an “aura of sophistication and languid sexuality” which✔️💯. born marie magdalene dietrich, she combined her first and middle names to coin the moniker “marlene”. she was a trendsetter in her incorporation of trousers, suits, and menswear into her wardrobe and her androgynous allure was often remarked upon. critic kenneth tynan wrote, “She has sex, but no particular gender. She has the bearing of a man; the characters she plays love power and wear trousers. Her masculinity appeals to women and her sexuality to men.” in the 1920s she enjoyed the vibrant queer nightlife of weimar berlin, visiting gay bars and drag balls, and in hollywood her love affairs with men and women were an open secret. she was an ardent opponent of nazi germany, refusing lucrative contacts offered her to make films there, raising money with billy wilder to help jews and dissidents escape, and undertaking extensive USO tours to entertain soldiers with an act that included her a playing musical saw and doing a mindreading routine she learned from orson welles. starting in the 50s and continuing into the mid-70s she worked largely as a cabaret artist touring the world to large audiences, employing burt bacharach as her musical arranger.
First of all, there are those publicity photos of her in a tux. Second of all, I have never been the same since knowing that she sent copies of those photos to her Berlin lovers signed "Daddy Marlene." Not only is she hot in all circumstances, but she can do everything from earthy to ice queen. Also, she kept getting sexy romantic lead parts in Hollywood after the age of 40, which would be rare even now. She hated Nazis, loved her friends, and had a sapphic social circle in Hollywood. She also had cheekbones that could cut glass and a voice that could melt you.
Her GENDER her looks her voice her everything
“In her films and record-breaking cabaret performances, Miss Dietrich artfully projected cool sophistication, self-mockery and infinite experience. Her sexuality was audacious, her wit was insolent and her manner was ageless. With a world-weary charm and a diaphanous gown showing off her celebrated legs, she was the quintessential cabaret entertainer of Weimar-era Germany.”
The bar scene in Morocco awoke something in me and ultimately changed my gender
youtube
"Her manner, the critic Kenneth Tynan wrote, was that of ‘a serpentine lasso whereby her voice casually winds itself around our most vulnerable fantasies.’ Her friend Maurice Chevalier said: ‘Dietrich is something that never existed before and may never exist again.’”
"Songstress, photographer, fashion icon, out bisexual phenom (notoriously stole Lupe Velez and Joan Crawford's men, and Errol Flynn's wife, had a torrid affair with Greta Garbo that ended in a 60-year feud, other notable conquests including Erich Maria Remarque -yes, the guy who wrote All Quiet on the Western Front- Douglas Fairbanks Junior, Claudette Colbert, Mercedes de Acosta, Edith Piaf), anti-Nazi activist. Marlene was a bitch - she had an open marriage for decades and one of her favorite things was making catty commentary about her current lover with her husband, and her relationship with her daughter was painful- but she was also immensely talented, a hard worker, an opponent of fascism and the hottest ice queen in Hollywood for a long time."
youtube
"She can sing! She can act! She told the Nazis to fuck off and became a US citizen out of spite! She worked with other German exiles to create a fund to help Jews and German dissidents escape (she donated an entire movie salary, about $450k, to the cause). She looks REALLY GOOD in a suit. If you're not convinced, please listen to her sing "Lili Marlene". Absolutely gorgeous woman with a gorgeous voice."
Gifset link
"Bisexual icon and Nazi-hater. Looks absolutely stunning in the suits she liked to wear. 'I dress for the image. Not for myself, not for the public, not for fashion, not for men'."
"would you not let her walk on you?"

imagine holding billy in your arms as he lays dying, pat garrett's gun still breathing smoke like a dragon you can't vanquish.
billy's breath is rattling in his chest, each struggling to escape, tears leaking from the corners of his eyes and over his temples. they leave stains on your skirt the color of storm clouds, stains that spread, stains that grow, like a tumor. you aren't crying. you feel as though you are being forced through the eye of a needle, everything inside you crushed and broken to fit, and in the process you are wrung dry.
his hand clutches tightly at your arm, his eyes flitting around blindly, a pair of frightened bluebirds. you stroke his forehead with your other hand as if you're his mother trying to soothe away a fever.
"hush," you whisper. "hush, hush, lie still. don't move too much."
as if it matters. as if it would save him, to lay still as a statue, a marble monument to youth bludgeoned into gray obscurity by a bullet, to tragedy, to a broken future. but you don't know what else to say, how else to comfort him.
he manages to say, in a voice cracked and sharp like shattered porcelain: "i'm scared."
"don't be scared," you say, although you're scared too.
scared of what your life is going to be when his is extinguished. scared of seeing him in every pale dawn and bitter-black night, of hearing his voice at the very edge of your hearing and turning your head toward the specter sound. scared -- even more so -- of forgetting precisely how he looks, how he sounds.
how he feels. how he tastes.
billy whimpers.
"hush," you say again. "just close your eyes, listen to me."
his eyes flutter shut.
"there's nothing to be afraid of." you swallow. "it's just like falling asleep. soon there won't be any more pain. you'll float in my arms, like you're floating in a sweet river. above you there's just blue sky, and the riverbanks are green as emeralds."
his grip on your arm softens.
"when you wake up, you'll be home," you say. "your mother will be there, your father, and joe. they're waiting for you, just like you'll wait for me. someday we'll all be together."
just not today.
"tunstall," he croaks, and you nod.
"yes, and mr. tunstall," you say. "he'll be so proud of you, billy. they all will. you fought so hard, and you've been so brave."
you lean down to press your lips against his forehead, which is clammy and slick with sweat. "you've been so brave," you say again. "i've always been so proud of you, you know that? so proud to be yours."
another kiss to his forehead. you think his skin is even cooler now than it was just a moment before.
"my love," you murmur.
you want to say, don't leave me. you want to beg him to fight, to hang on; but you can't ask that of him. not after everything he's been through, the pain he's suffered in the past and in this moment. it's time for you both to let go.
you hold him like that, hunched over with him cradled in your lap. shielding him, your hair framing his face like a curtain protecting him from the rest of the world. the world that has been so hard on him, the world he is slipping away from by degrees, as though chains are rusting away from a prisoner seeking freedom.
you keep your eyes on his face, his beloved, beautiful face, but you're aware, too, of his grip on your wrist. how it slackens moment by moment, until his fingertips are just barely resting on your sleeve. you hear him trying, fruitlessly, to catch his breath; it almost sounds like he's drowning.
he gasps, as though he's seen something astonishing, although his eyes are still closed. you think -- you're not sure, because your heartbeat is roaring in your ears, like it's attempting to remind you that you're alive despite any desire to the contrary -- that you hear him whisper, "ma?"
his hand slips away from your arm to land on the floor. the soft thump is louder than the gunshot. it echoes and it lacerates, tearing you apart inside.
when they try to take him away from you, the tears come. you struggle the best you can without letting go of him; you clutch him to you with one arm, your free hand curled into claws. you bare your teeth. you scream, you curse -- not epithets, but bitter prayers, as if you're a witch who can work dark magic.
finally, they overpower you.
they bury him. you wish you could burrow into the earth like a worm and lay down there with him.
but you know he wouldn't want that for you. so you live, despite every day, every moment, feeling like a stone in your mouth, weighing you down and entombing your speech. not that you have anything to say, not anymore.
months go by. summer is scorching. you imagine the unforgiving sun burning you up, like a dry leaf caught in a campfire. you imagine yourself as ash, drifting away in the wind.
autumn brings damp rain, keeping everyone inside. it doesn't matter to you. you can hardly bring yourself to leave your bed, despite the memories that lurk in the sheets like fleas, waiting to bite you.
winter is cold and gray, but you hardly notice the snows, the howling winds, the disconsolate pewter skies. if anything, it's only a reflection of how you feel.
and then --
despite the cruelty of the world, the frozen fist of january trying to choke the warmth out of every breath of breeze, out of each brittle beam of sunshine -- despite nothing meaning anything -- despite what feel like the greatest of odds --
spring comes again. flowers push their stubborn, colorful heads up out of the ground. the wind softens. the sun gains strength. you find yourself climbing out of bed; the floors and the chimney are swept, the windows cleaned, dishes and clothes are washed. you prop your front door open so the fresh air can come in.
one morning, you come outside to find a kitten huddled under the rocking chair on your front porch. it mewls, sounding rather cross with you, as though asking what took you so long.
you smile.
you take him inside, pour out a saucer of milk and slice up a piece of chicken. you notice, as you're holding him on your lap, that his eyes are blue.
you name him bonney.

COLLAGE BOOKS
The Comfort of Crows
In The Comfort of Crows, Margaret Renkl presents a literary devotional: fifty-two chapters that follow the creatures and plants in her backyard over the course of a year. As we move through the seasons—from a crow spied on New Year’s Day, its resourcefulness and sense of community setting a theme for the year, to the lingering bluebirds of December, revisiting the nest box they used in spring—what develops is a portrait of joy and grief: joy in the ongoing pleasures of the natural world, and grief over winters that end too soon and songbirds that grow fewer and fewer. With fifty-two original color artworks by the author’s brother, Billy Renkl, The Comfort of Crows is a lovely and deeply moving book from a cherished observer of the natural world. Read More

12 days of Christmas - Day One
“Mama!”
You feel a little tug at your sleeve, and you look down to see tiny fingers grasping the cotton, your daughter’s face obscured by the wreath she’s holding up with her other hand. A halo of evergreen boughs, studded with bright red berries and delicate white blossoms, and you can spot a few pinecones tucked in for effect. If you peek through the center, you can spot your little girl’s hopeful expression, and you know there’s no way you can refuse her.
“What do you say?” you prompt, figuring that you might as well drive an important lesson home if you’re giving in so easily.
“Pleeease!”
Your arms are already full with other decorations — garlands; Christmas lights and candles; an exquisite set of baubles in red, green and gold that, according to the shy but proud clerk, he made himself; candy canes that may or may not actually make it onto the tree. And then there’s the things you actually need, like a bolt of cloth for curtains, a sack of flour, and perishable items that you know for a fact won’t have a chance to go bad before you eat them. Your girl is growing like a weed, and eating enough to make you believe you gave birth to triplets instead of just one child.
“Can you carry it yourself?” you ask.
You hear a dubious little hum from amongst the greenery, and you can’t blame her. It’s almost as long as she is, and certainly wider. “I can try,” she says.
The two of you manage to get everything to the counter, and everything is crated up for you to take home — except the wreath, which is simply too large. Both you and your daughter look at it uncertainly, and you realize, as you cast your eye over your purchases, you have no clue how you’re going to get all this home.
You live close enough to the general store that you and your daughter walked here, with your little girl’s wagon in tow to get everything back. The problem is that your eye, so to speak, was bigger than your transportation. Your little girl could barely carry the wreath up to the register. The wagon is nearly full, and you still have things to add in. You certainly don’t want to risk breaking those pretty little ornaments—
“You need a hand, ma’am?”
There’s time to register your daughter’s little gasp as she ducks behind your skirts, a flash of her white face peeping up — and up, and up — at the young man who has appeared next to you. You have to look up yourself, tilting your chin back to gaze into a face that is, frankly, apart from being open and friendly, rather handsome.
“Oh, sorry, I didn’t mean to startle anybody,” he says, a hint of chagrin creeping into his expression. “I just thought I could carry some stuff for you, if you’d like.”
You reach back to rest a hand on your daughter’s golden head. “It’s not you,” you say. “She’s just shy.”
It’s the easiest way to explain your daughter’s behavior, but you feel a little stab of guilt, like you’re betraying her somehow. There’s more to it than that. But you can hardly countenance divulging such information to someone you don’t even know, regardless of the fact that his eyes are an extraordinary shade of deep blue, with charming crinkles at the corners which deepen as he smiles at you.
“Aw, well, there’s nothin’ wrong with that,” he says. “Besides, how is she supposed to talk to me when I’m all the way up here? You might as well ask a little rabbit to chat with a bluebird up in a tree.”
He curls his upper lip so that his front teeth poke out, and he wriggles his nose in a bunny-like way. Unbelievably, you hear a giggle from the folds of your skirt. The young man kneels down so he’s closer to your daughter’s eye level.
“I’m Bunny — I mean, Billy.” He looks up at you, and you have the most absurd urge to lay your hand on his head, tangle your fingers in the dark curls catching a surprising amount of the faint winter sun. “It’s a pleasure to meet two such lovely ladies.”
You introduce yourself and then your daughter. There’s a moment of silence, and then your daughter surprises you by peeking up at him and saying, “You could carry my wreath. But you have to be careful, okay? I really like it.”
You open your mouth to remind her to ask more politely, but Billy just straightens up and nods solemnly. “I promisee, ma’am, I will take very good care of your wreath.”
He ends up carrying the wreath, dangling from the crook of one arm, and a few of the smaller crates, freeing up room in the wagon for everything else. His legs are so long that he has to shorten his stride so that you and your daughter can keep up. You watch his face of any sign of strain, ready to say you could take something. But he doesn’t so much as wince.
Instead, every time he catches you looking at him, he just smiles at you. You try to ignore the fluttering feeling in the pit of your stomach whenever he does this, but it’s easier said than done.
“Okay,” he says, rather matter-of-factly, as you tell him the house just up ahead is yours. “Do you have your tree up already?”
“Well — yes,” you say.
You’re mystified as to why he wants to know, until he says, “Okay, good. That’s the centerpiece of everything. Now we can hang everything else up around it.”
You haven’t even considered the idea that he might want to stay and help decorate, and you’re about to say that you can handle this part yourself — but your daughter surprises you once again. She catches Billy’s sleeve and gives a little tug. She’s clammed up again, but she does lead Billy into the house, and points to the the wall above the small fireplace.
“You want it there?” Billy asks, and she nods.
Before you can open your mouth, she adds a soft, “Please.”
You start to tell Billy where your hammer and nails are, but he’s walking toward the kitchen where you keep them in a drawer by the stove, as if he’s been here a thousand times before. Upon catching your bemused look, he smiles once more and shrugs. “It’s where I keep ’em at home,” he says. “I just took a guess.”
By the time you’ve unpacked the foodstuffs, he’s hung the wreath to your daughter’s specifications, delivered partially by small, barely audible sentences and hand gestures.
He helps you put up the nails on which to drape the garlands, until the mantlepiece is hung with red and green. Your daughter carefully places the candles on the hearth, although she knows that she is under no circumstances to light them herself.
By the time everything is hung up or situated just so, your cabin has been transformed into Santa’s very own workshop. Your daughter is beaming, clinging to your skirts, and you can’t help but throw Billy a grateful smile.
“Thank you,” you say. “You really didn’t have to do all this. It’s very sweet of you.”
He smiles back at you. “My pleasure,” he says. “I know my ma never would have forgiven me if I’d walked on by without offering to help.”
The next thing you say falls out of your mouth before you can even think to say it. “You should stay for dinner,” you say. “It’s only fair. You deserve a square meal after all your hard work.”
In part, you really do believe this. Your little cabin looks beautiful, and you can tell your little girl is delighted — Billy’s kindness went a long way toward making that possible. For making her smile like that, dinner is the least you could offer him.
But —
Quite simply, you also don’t want him to leave. There’s a warmth about him, a charm, that not only draws you in, but makes you feel safe. You haven’t felt like this since the early days with—
You push the thought away before it can take root. Instead, you focus on Billy, who rewards your proposition with another smile.
“I would love that,” he says. “Thank you.”
From the corner of your eye, you see your daughter beam. It seems that she’s also taken a shine to this good-natured young man.
“Now,” you say, turning to her, “your job is to make sure that Billy doesn’t lift a finger to help me make dinner. He’s done enough. Do you think you can do that?”
With a firm mmmhm, your daughter doesn’t waste any time. She marches over to Billy and takes hold of his sleeve, leading him to the corner where her dolls are nestled in a wicker basket. Billy tosses you a look over his shoulder that has you biting your lip to keep from laughing.
“Sit,” your daughter says, and then pauses, with a quick glance at you. “Please.”
Billy folds his long legs so that he settles on the ground beside her, and she hands him one of her dolls. While you busy yourself at the stove, simmering beef broth and vegetables to start on a stew, you can hear the two of them — though, in truth, it sounds like it’s mostly Billy — constructing a rather elaborate scenario.
“Now, see here, Miss Pennyfeather—!”
Your daughter softly corrects him, “Miss Pennyweather.”
“Oh, sorry — ” Billy clears his throat. “Now, see here, Miss Pennyweather! I think your cat has been steee-eeealing my chicken eggs!”
Your daughter dissolves into giggles. “No, Miss Featherington!”
“Oh, no? Wh00o-000, then?!”
More giggles. “A fox!”
“I ain’t seen no fooo-oox around here!”
As you cook up beef to add to the stew, you can’t help but overhear that, no, Miss Pennyweather’s cat didn’t steal Miss Featherington’s chicken eggs, but it turns out that another doll has been dressing up as a fox to steal the eggs — because she wants them to argue — so she sneak into their houses while they’re distracted and take their prettiest ribbons and baubles from their dressing table.
(The concept of a dressing table is something your daughter has recently discovered, and for whatever reason, she’s absolutely obsessed with it.)
“I hate to interrupt,” you say, and you really do, because you kind of want to know how this ends. “But dinner is ready.”
Billy gets to his feet and offers his hand to help your daughter up. She smiles and puts her tiny hand in his, and he lifts her up so easily that her feet leave the floor, making her squeal. He carries her to the table and plops her down in a chair, where she sits, a little disheveled from her journey, but flushed and giggling.
Digging into his dinner with gratifying gusto, Billy asks, “How long have you been livin’ in town? I figure it can’t be too long.”
You smile. “Why?” you say. “Because I should have known better than to just bring a little wagon for my groceries? I didn’t expect Tunstall’s to have so much in the way of holiday decorations.”
Billy chuckles. “No,” he says softly, his eyes trained on yours. “Because I definitely woulda remembered seein’ you before.”
You feel heat rise in your cheeks, and you drop your gaze to your bowl of stew, fiddling with your napkin. “We’re new here,” you say. “We only arrived just last week.”
“Just the two of you?” Billy asks. You sense something underneath the simple question, something almost…hopeful.
You open your mouth to respond, but your daughter beats you to it. “It’s just me and Mama,” she says, concentrating on sopping up the last of her stew with a piece of bread. “Daddy went away.”
You look up at Billy again, and he flicks his gaze heavenward. You shake your head and give the smallest tilt of your head toward the door.
No, your husband didn’t die. He simply left. The two of you had been fighting for months, mostly over money. You’d seen the toll it had taken on your daughter — the way she would bury herself under her covers whenever your husband started to yell, the way she would pick at her food and peek nervously at her father whenever he lapsed into sullen silence at the dinner table, the way she talked less and less. It was as if she was trying to make herself smaller.
You didn’t realize she was taking a page from your book until your husband finally left. You woke up that morning to find his possessions missing, and you realized, after the shock had worn off, that it didn’t hurt. It just felt…freeing. You didn’t have to worry about his anger or his rebukes anymore.
But your daughter stayed inside the shell she’d created for herself. Around you, she was more like herself, but strangers — especially men — made her clam up again.
Except for today.
Except for Billy.
After dinner, Billy and your daughter go back to their dolls, while you clean up before sitting down with a pile of mending. You aren’t even surprised anymore that he doesn’t take the opportunity to take his leave. Honestly, the longer he stays, the more it feels like he’s always been here.
It doesn’t take long for your daughter to start nodding off with Miss Pennyweather still in her arms. Billy gently pries the doll away, while you scoop your daughter up in her arms and tuck her in.
When you turn around, you find Billy by the hearth, feeding more logs into the fire to keep the cabin warm. He straightens up and turns to look at you.
For what feels like an eternity, the both of you just stand there, locking eyes from across the room. You walk toward him and touch his arm.
“Can I say something?” he asks. He hasn’t taken his eyes off you.
You nod. “Please.”
“Your husband was a fool,” he says, so matter-of-factly that you can’t help but smile. “Anybody who walks away from you and your sweet little girl ain’t got the brains God gave a gopher.”
You have to — absolutely have to — bury your face against his shoulder to muffle your laughter. His own chuckle rumble against your cheek.
You lift your head. “Do you have anyone to spend the holiday with?” you ask.
Family? A girl?
He shakes his head. “No,” he says softly. “I’m on my own.”
You smile at him. “Not anymore.”
Over the next few weeks, one may be forgiven for thinking that Billy actually lives at your little cabin. He’s there more often than not, fixing things that need fixing — your door has never quite shut right, at least not before Billy got his hands on it — and helping you with chores, from chopping firewood to sweeping the front porch. He plays with your daughter, from dolls to jacks to hide-and-seek.
And when your little girl has fallen asleep, you and Billy sit up by the fire, just talking. You start sitting in chairs on either side of the hearth, but his chair ends up getting closer to yours, and then you scoot yours over, and then his ends up a few inches nearer. By Christmas Eve, the two of you are sitting so close that your knees touch.
“I brought my fiddle with me, so I don’t forget it tomorrow,” Billy says softly. “Does your little girl like Christmas carols?”
“She loves them.”
He leans forward, and so do you.
“And you?” he says.
“Oh, yes.”
He leans in further. You reciprocate.
“And me?” he says.
You laugh quietly. “How am I supposed to know if you love Christmas carols?”
Billy smiles. “No,” he says. “I mean, do you love me?”
He’s so close to you now that you can catch the cinnamon on his breath, a remnant of the hot cider the three of you shared before your daughter went to bed. Your gaze drifts to his lips before meeting his eyes again.
“Tell me I’m not the only one,” he goes on. “There’s somethin’ between us, ain’t there? I’m crazy about you. The both of you.”
“You’re not the only one,” you say. “I…I feel like I’ve known you forever. And I’ve never seen my daughter this way with anyone, ever. She adores you.”
You pause. Now the two of you are close enough that you can count the faint freckles speckled over the bridge of his nose. “Billy,” you say softly, “since — since you’re coming back so early in the morning, maybe you should just…stay.”
“Are you sure, darlin’?”
You nod.
“Can I hold you tonight?” he murmurs. “We don’t have to do anythin’ else. But all I’ve thought about since the moment I first saw you is holdin’ you in my arms.”
“Yes,” you say softly.
He kisses you. You can feel it from the brush of his soft, full mouth against yours, to the very soles of your feet, like a bolt of lightning racing through every vein in your body. When you break apart, he gets up and takes your hand, leading you to your small room.
You climb into bed and he follows suit. His arms slip around you and pull you flush against his chest.
“Good thing you already packed your fiddle,” you whisper, and he laughs softly against your hair.
Billy had helped you wrap your daughter’s presents after she went to bed earlier that night, and you can spot the pile from where you lay with your head on Billy’s shoulder. “Just how early is she gonna wake us up to tear into those?” he asks, his voice falling into your ear.
You give a quiet little giggle. “Pretty early,” you admit.
He presses a kiss to your forehead. “So we should probably get some sleep, huh?”
You hum softly in agreement.
It’s been so long that you expect to lay away for hours, adjusting to the now-strange sensation of a man in bed next to you. But Billy’s warmth, and the strength of his arms around you, lull you under in what feels like a matter of moments.
Your daughter does wake you up at just about the crack of dawn, and she doesn’t seem all that surprised to find Billy there. Although she’s rather focused on her gifts, gasping as she takes in the sight of them, wrapping paper glittering in the glow of the lights.
When the paper is cleared away, and your daughter is cooing with delight over her new toys, Billy fetches his fiddle while you make breakfast. It doesn’t surprise you to hear that his voice is rich and warm.
“Love shall be our token, love be yours and love be mine…”
You can feel his eyes on you as if he’s standing right behind you, running his fingertips along your spine.
“Love to God and all men, love for plea and gift and sign…”
You leave the stove for a moment and lean down to kiss his forehead. “I never answered your question last night,” you whisper. “If I love you or not.”
He grins up at you. “No, you didn’t,” he agrees. “And? You’re not gonna break my heart on Christmas mornin’, are you?”
You chuckle, smoothing your fingers through his hair. “I do,” you say softly. “I do love you.”
He reaches up and catches your hand, presses a kiss to your fingers. “Love to all men,” he echoes. He kisses your fingers again. “And I love you, honey.”
A small figure wriggles in between the two of you, your daughter popping up in Billy’s lap. “And me?”
“Were you eavesdropping?” you gasp, your affront all false.
She giggles. “Yes.”
Billy grins and cuddles her close, making her giggle again. “Well, that’s alright,” he says. “You don’t gotta worry about Santa for a whole year.”
You swat his shoulder gently. “Don’t tell her that.”
He flashes you an unrepentant smile before tickling your little girl’s side. “Yeah, and you,” he says.
Your daughter settles comfortably in his lap. “This,” she says, after a moment of consideration, “is the best Christmas ever in the world.”
Frankly, you can’t disagree.

TATMR Rewatch
Saw this post appear on my dash again and felt like rewatching the movie again. Thoughts while rewatching a twenty-four year old film about magic talking trains included below.
Btw, if you want to watch this fever dream for yourself, the whole thing is on Youtube w/ ads:
youtube
Starting off and- hey it's Diesel 10! You remember Diesel 10, right? What a "blast from the past," right? Right?
I miss the hammy, over-the-top New Jersey accent they gave Diesel in this movie. The slimy, manipulative voice they gave him later on is fine, but c'mon, the guy's got a giant claw coming out of his back. There's nothing subtle about him. Give us our big dumb tantruming baby back!
Interesting to see Gordon shake w/ fear after seeing Diesel, considering how much flak people gave the last couple seasons of the show over the engines 'gesturing' w/ their bodies (same w/ Thomas sneezing later on).
The two ends of the universe: Anytown, USA and a remote island off the coast of England (I know its implied that Sodor is part of a separate magical dimension in this movie, hush).
That said, filming in the rustic British countryside really doesn't scream America:
Also what's that line about Shining Time being separated from Sodor by "oceans of time"? Dym like time zones (crossing the Atlantic) or time travel? The show is canonically set in the 50s-70s, afterall.
It's a shame that they didn't use the original Shining Time theme for the introductory shot. Not sure if it'd fit, but it's still a shame. Include it during the credits at least.
Oh, that fish is not having a good time.
Stacy Jones! c:
Billy Twofeathers (wdym he aways looked like that, hush)! c:
S/o to James' androgynous voice in this movie.
Diesel 10 is going to dominate you... sorry.
I know they recut this movie after audience testing, but it is odd having the mystery of the lost engine w/ Burnett's backstory revealed to the audience right at the beginning of the movie, only for it to continue being treated as a mystery by the rest of the cast until the climax.
That said, they still did an admirable job w/ it, considering they cut out one of the main antagonists. There's a few repeated story beats (Burnett and Diesel giving Lady's backstory back to back) and lines that don't quite work (Burnett telling Diesel, the magic talking train, he'll fail bc he "doesn't believe in magic"), but nothing too distracting.
Jumping from that slow, melancholic scene w/ Burnett to Diesel w/ his fucking goofy theme playing is fantastic.
Mr. C Humming the OG theme tune is a really cute touch.
Free Moby Dick!
"Stacy, where did you find this painting?" Mr. C, I'm pretty sure that's a drawing.
I can't get over Baldwin chewing the scenery in this movie, he's just constantly goofing off in front of the camera, picking up and talking to random props. I know all of it is prob in the script, it is a kid's film after all, but its just so silly that I love it.
I like the implication that Burnett was just a kid that Mr. C talked to and chose to entrust w/ Lady's secret, just like all the kids he'd (well, another Mr. Conductor), interact w/ on Shining Time.
Lily! c:
Bluebird! c:
Now there's the America I know! Cars everywhere!
I remember too many of these lines.
The scene w/ the angry painting of Topham calming down each time they cut back to it after Mr. C puts back the hat was and still is the best one in the movie imo.
Lady Hatt's portrait is still just one of the wooden figures lmao.
I have a deep-seated memory of constantly repeating the scene of Mr. C reflexively batting the ball he was just roleplaying w/ out of his hand and scolding it.
Nvm the scene of Diesel busting through the shed wall still goes hard as hell, esp. when Mr. C's magic starts failing (same for all of Diesel's action scenes tbh).
Here it is, the infamous sugar scene:
Also that face. :O
Jesus, why did they put this scene into the movie?
Hearing Stacy say that and start sobbing is genuinely upsetting.
I didn't even notice the railway (sorry, railroad) got replaced w/ a road in this scene.
It's interesting to think about how in the workprint, an older Lily was the narrator, meanwhile Mr. C would still out here constantly breaking the fourth wall by talking straight to the audience.
Very interesting low self-esteem James moment b/w him and Mr. C. It's a shame that isn't explored more in the actual series. James is usually portrayed as vain, not insecure.
Mr. C, you're on a railway. Why are you hiking in the woods to get to a windmill?
Bertie saying "vroom vroom vroom" after every one of his lines is the best decision they ever made.
James: "Mr. C's not at the Windmill. I looked!" Point proven.
Even though they lean into the sick Henry angle, it's nice to see he still has that edge to his personality, at least for two out of three scenes.
Presented w/o context:
youtube
Why does Junior have a Scottish accent? Is he from Ringo's side of the family?
Mr. C is in charge of this entire railway rn and he's just sleeping outside on the fucking ground having an existential crisis.
Hey Lily can play the harmonica! I need to break out mine again and harass people w/ my inability to play.
There he is! P.T. Boomer! I remember reading SiF all the time going over all the scenes left in after they axed that entire plotline like that freeze-frame of Stacy w/ the picture of Burnett, Boomer, and Tasha.
Lady's ghost whistling still works as is, but just imagine hearing it thru out the film w/o that knowledge. Much more haunting.
They did Toby so much justice in this film. Consistently a wise voice of reason that gets his own spotlight moment vs Diesel.
I... I forgot this movie included a version of "Really Useful Engine" in the middle of it.
I know the film was criticized for how much focus it put on its all new human cast, but I actually really enjoy these scenes. Maybe bc they're part of the quintessential Magic Railroad experience.
That said, w/o the inclusion of Boomer, the human plot lacks tension or stakes for much of the runtime. The Sodor plot (thru the character of Mr. C) is doing all of the tension-building for the whole movie. As it stands, there's little reason for an audience to actually get invested in that part of the story as is outside of just liking the characters.
Man, this film's special effects have not aged well.
Oh yeah, Annie and Clarabel only get a single line in the entire movie. :/
Oh Alec finally gets to start acting serious towards the end of the film. It really helps the tension building.
Mr. C: "No he is not a dog. Let's just say he's a puppy in need of a good trainer," while Junior is kneeling in front of him w/ his tongue out panting. I get that it's meant to be a short little gag but wtf is this movie?
It's my favorite character! Tumbleweed!!!
OMG TUMBLEWEED APPEARS IN A SECOND SCENE! I FORGOT ABOUT THAT!
CGI Thomas just out here chilling on top of a cliff in the real world.
Thomas falls down and almost dies and Lily doesn't notice at all.
The smelter's yard continues to be the best set in this entire series. With the lighting turning the steam red it looks genuinely hellish.
Burnett: "Well Lady, this is your shining time too." Hey they said it!
The viaduct collapse scene is so good! It feels so real and weighty. Props to the props department.
Burnett: "Now we'll always remember our shining time together." 🌈🌈🌈
God, this movie is so cute! Really fun watching it again in full some all these years later.
HEY WHAT THE FUCJK IS THAT CREDITS SONG?!?
youtube
HELLO??!?
I've legitimately never heard this before. I must've just stopped watching at the credits as a kid. this movie just ends w/ a 2000s pop dance song. okay. sure.

Queen of the highwire.
Here is an eastern bluebird (Sialia sialis), female I think, though immatures also have similar coloring.
"I'll have a blue Christmas without you I'll be so blue just thinking about you Decorations of red on a green Christmas tree Won't be the same, dear, if you're not here with me
And when those blue snowflakes start fallin' That's when those blue memories start callin' You'll be doin' all right with your Christmas of white But I'll have a blue, blue, blue, blue Christmas
You'll be doin' all right with your Christmas of white But I'll have a blue, blue, blue, blue Christmas" -
-Songwriters: Jay W. Johnson, Billy Hayes.

Some of My Fav WOC Jazz Artists!
As it is officially the last day of Women's History Month, I thought it would be fitting to close it off by giving some of my favorite (and arguably underrated) WOC jazz artists some very well-deserved recognition!
Una Mae Carlisle (born December 26, 1915 – passed November 7, 1956) -
A truly talented jazz pianist, composer, and vocalist that specialized primarily in swing and crooner styles. With her voice highly resonant, leaving behind a lingering sweetness, and careful attention to detail in her piano-playing, Una Mae was not only one of the first WOC jazz composers to have her work end up on billboard charts, but her achievements are parallel to/went beyond the bounds of those other more conscientiously documented jazz performers in the early 20th century.
Discovered by Fats Waller at the young age of 17, Una Mae Carlisle had an early start in the entertainment industry with her true roots being in the little state of Ohio. Despite her early compositions and playing styles being heavily inspired by Waller, starting in the mid-late 1930s and continuing until her passing, Una Mae would go on to have her own solo career outside of touring and recording with him. In turn, she traveled across the states and even made her way throughout Europe and the UK (though eventually returning to the states and settling down in Harlem, New York).
Her achievements spanned from things such as her compositions becoming hits that proceeded to be performed and recorded by other highly-regarded jazz artists such as Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, Billie Holiday, etc, and taking residencies in big and bustling clubs around the world. She would do work in Paris, London, Amsterdam, and New York where she would appear and perform in several films, and worked alongside record labels such as Capitol Records and Bluebird Records. Eventually, in her later years of life, Una Mae would go on to become the first African-American woman to have her own radio program, named “Agile fingers and a voice that lingers," broadcasting to stations across different parts of the US.
There's a lot that I've left out as I could dedicate an entire essay to her, but please give her a listen and be prepared to feel like you're falling in love.
Teri Lyne Carrington (born August 4, 1965) -
A force to be reckoned with in the world of contemporary jazz, drummer, composer, activist, and educator, Teri Lyne Carrington, in my eyes, is a genuine SUPERHUMAN. She has and continues to breathe new life into the genre and has made significant contributions to expanding what jazz is all about.
As a lifelong musician, Teri Lyne Carrington, started her career as a professionally accounted for jazz artist at the young age of 10 and attended the Berklee College of Music at only 11. Throughout her career, Teri has worked and toured with other big names in jazz such as Cassandra Wilson, Stan Getz, Pharaoh Sanders, Herbie Hancock, and Wayne Shorter, and can also be recognized in other parts of the entertainment industry such as performing on several late night TV shows .
Teri lyne Carrington may also be recognized as the first woman ever to win a Grammy award in the Best Jazz Instrumental Album category. However, she didn't do this just once, but SEVERAL times. She would recieve Grammy's for "The Mosaic Project," "Money Jungle: Provocative in Blue," "Waiting Game," and her most recent album "new STANDARDS vol.1" (LIKE I SAID, A FORCE TO BE RECKONED WITH)
Her artistry is not to be questioned and neither is her character! Teri has made archaic efforts in amplifying the voices of and creating an inclusive, safe, and welcoming space in the jazz world for marginalized groups. LISTEN TO THIS COOL ASS LADY!!!
Melissa Aldana (born December 3, 1988) -
Highly influential and a true master of her craft, Chilean jazz saxophonist, Melissa Aldana, evokes a sort of poetic and soul-touching aura through her playing and does a superb job of not just performing jazz but feeling and speaking jazz.
Melissa got the ball rolling as a professional saxophonist by first playing jazz clubs as a young teen in Santiago, Chile. As she gained traction, she was eventually lead to study at the Berklee College of Music and would then move to New York City post-graduation, and during this time, was under the guidance of other respectable musicians such as Bill Pierce, Greg Osby, and George Coleman.
Outside of her musical education, Melissa Aldana has gone to the lengths of achieving things such as winning Altazor National Arts Award of Chile, being the first female musician, youngest musician, and South American musician to win the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition, performing in multiple credible jazz festivals around the world, AND has won a Grammy for Best Jazz Performance.
Just like Una Mae Carlisle and Teri Lyne Carrington, Melissa Aldana's work ethic and eagerness to always keep learning and widening her perspectives is more than admirable.
These women make me so excited for the future directions of jazz and the incoming lineage of influential and innovative female jazz performers. As the genre evolves, it is figures like these outstanding women that unfailingly serve as a reminder as to how important women are to the arts and how we will forever stand as symbols of possibility.
Have a beautiful April~
