something i think is really funny is that "queerplatonic partner" would kinda translate to "parceiro queerplatônico" in portuguese but the acronym is pqp, which is also short for "puta que pariu" (literally whore that birthed you, but we use it in the same way as holy shit)
so i imagine people saying shit like "sim esse é meu... meu pqp"

watching mozart l’opéra rock again got me thinking 1700s gossip must’ve been really funny. like
you expect it to be “t’as entendu? marianne a montré ses chevilles sur la place publique l’autre jour, quelle honte!”
but MOR taught me it was more like “mozart a encore réveillé la sexualité des parisiens… ouais. ENCORE”

One of the Hungarian Spotify ads is literally making me loose my mind
Like he says: unexpected surprises, and it just doesn't match the whole vibe
Because it makes me feel like I'm listening to poetry instead of a Spotify Ad
As if saying joyful happiness or angry madness, so basically putting two words togethere that are synonims and making an "indicative structure" - if that is what they prefer them as (there's a term for it in Hungarian, don't know about English though, it's when a word and an adjective that describes the word is in the same structure, we use it in sentence analysing), for example "The red fox jumps over the fence." and the indicative structure is "red fox" where the adjective "red" describes the word "fox"
There's probably a name for it though... Can someone please tell me what it is?

My local library's poetry collection drives me up their freaking walls. There is literally 80% of old French poetry mixed with obscure, contemporary French poets I never heard of, then 15% of European Union countries' poetry books (it is marketed as such, with a european flag sticker and everything, the Remainers will be elated to know that as far as my library is concerned the UK is still in the EU), with a prevalence of UK (Cause you know, romantism, Blake, Shelley, Shakespeare) then German, Spanish and Polish books. The remaining 20 european countries have to fight to have even one book. To not even talk about the rest of the world. South America simply doesn't exist. Maya Angelou and Ginsberg represent North America. Asia is down to a handful of haikus books, and Africa and Oceania? Never heard of them.
You've got to understand that this public library is the biggest of a big town. But instead of books (that occupies at most one quarter of their building), they acquire Movies and CDs. Nothing against those, its just that their book collection pales in comparison clearly suffering from the competition.
They sit on a gigantic collection of obscure French poetry collections and not a single recent collection, neither in French, English, or any other language. Where is Time is a Mother, library? Where is Jericho Brown? Kaveh Akbar? Ada Limón? Where is ANY novel poetry book for Muses' sake-

why do some disabled people get so fucking uppity about other people using aid devices. its not your business if someone or their kid is using a cane or gets cochlear implants or has a disability placard. like mind your own fucking business!!! just because YOU want to suffer without them doesnt make you morally better.
its so much worse when the bully is disabled themselves. like. you know how useful these devices are and yet you attack people for using them. what the actual fuck is wrong with you.

(Because I've seen too many posts about how Boromir doesn't speak Sindarin)
Which members of the Fellowship (+ assorted other LotR characters) speak which languages:
(canon, interpolation and headcanon mingled, so beware)
Boromir: Westron, Gondorian Sindarin (many Gondorians and certainly members of the nobility are billingual), probably at least a little Rohirric given how much he seems to like the Rohirrim and vice versa, any random Quenya words Denethor hammered into him before he decided military training was more important that he hasn't managed to forget yet (few)
Aragorn: Billingual in Westron and Sindarin since very early childhood, Quenya, Rohirric, definitely several tongues spoken in Harad and Rhûn
Frodo: Westron, some Quenya and Sindarin
Sam: Westron
Merry: Westron
Pippin: Westron
Legolas: Mirkwood Sindarin (with Silvan elements), Silvan, Westron
Gimli: Khûzdul, Westron
Gandalf: Westron, Quenya, Sindarin, Rohirric, wouldn't be too surprised if Khûzdul + an immense number of other languages - more rather than less
Faramir: Westron, Sindarin, Quenya, some Adunaic* (dead language), if he doesn't know Rohirric yet, he will learn it from Éowyn
Elrond: Sindarin (likely his mother tongue), Quenya (with Feanorian accent?), Adunaic* (dead language he learned before it was dead), Taliska* (even dead-er language, same), Westron, countless more
Theoden: Rohirric, Westron, Gondorian Sindarin (everyone is sleeping on the fact that he spent his childhood in Gondor because his father did not get along with his grandfather at all, enough to move to another country)
Éowyn: Rohirric, Westron, if she knows any Sindarin at all, it would be a few random words, but she will learn upon moving to Gondor
---
(* If anyone wants to know, Adunaic is the predecessor of Westron and Taliska is the predecessor of Adunaic)

My experience as a monolingual foreigner on the internet
So for the 3/4 of a year I have been learning new languages and my favourite way of doing this has been to join gaming servers and to chat to people fluent in the languages, and also to post in these languages on tumblr or wherever else. I've joined a lot of minecraft servers especially and have joined discord calls with really lovely people who play games with me to help teach me their language. (Shoutout to qsmp news discord server for helping out so much!) I've been learning french and some spanish. Anyway. Here are some observations.
Everything is exhausting. My social battery is so much lower than it usually is (Usually I'm really social!) due to the effort of everything having to be translated either in my mind or on google translate
I'm a lot slower at everything while talking to other people. It's not just my janky, broken language thats slow; it's how I process all information around me. It's really easy to get information overload while multitasking. Tasks take longer.
Learning a language is insanely embarrassing. You practically get turned into a baby. You just have to deal with it.
People are really really lovely! A lot of people have helped me out in small ways.
Usually this means that they have to be more patient with me as I am slow. This can't be avoided.
Turns out theres everything that I enjoy in English in other languages! So much more music, games, youtubers, films!
Learning a language has really made me appreciate how confusing english is. What are we doing.
Penpals are awesome. You can't rely on them forever, but they're lovely while they last.
Theres something really touching about how people recognise you even when you can't fully communicate with them. I've started playing on a minecraft server and they all greet me in English before they talk in spanish. It's a nice way to feel included and not judged.
Everything takes longer in another language. a 5 minute long video will feel like a 15 minute long video.
It's important to determine if short-form or long-form media better for you. Generally, Long form = low concentration over long time and short form = intense concentration over a short time.
Emojis / emoticons are invaluble. Tone is almost impossible to convey when your language is broken and you have no body language to convey.
Tone indicators are useless. Obviously. They require a shared language.
Talking to billingual/multilingual people really helped me along the way. Most of the ones that I have talked to didn't grow up learning their second language, and instead learned either as a teen or as an adult. That really helped me since before I always had the perception that you either were billingual or you werent. It still takes forever though.
people are really lovely.
Anyway. I'd like to make a post later on with like. actual tips. Its rare that you hear people talk about the experience of learning a language rather than just being billingual. But I am really enjoying the process. Over the last week Im having to slow things down on the french front, just to keep my sanity.

Dearest mimi I have a question about himiraku that I think you may have already posted about . what languages do the four of them speak and what’s their main language of communication, I assumed it was Japanese but it occurred to me that some of them might have other languages in common? If so do they converse in those languages
HIIIII im so glad you asked this bc i extensively thought about it in the recent days. Here is the basic rundown of their language proficiencies:
AKITO: native Croatian speaker, fluent in English. His accent is on the thick side and he makes occasional mistakes (mainly struggles with when you need to say "the ___" and when you need to say "a ___" and when you don't need to say anything - this is the most common struggle of Croatians speaking ENG) but he has very good understanding of it and is able to express himself fluently. His Japanese though is very scarce. He tried teaching himself but since he had zero guidance other than the internet (and not much conviction) he went to Japan barely able to patch together several rough introductory sentences. Let's say he can somewhat get by as a tourist. This is OK because the Troupe is an international business and all staff as well as most members will be able to converse in English to a degree. He is the reason Himiraku primarily use English.
JUNPEI: Native Japanese speaker. He grew up alongside Englishmen like Seiya did but he didn't have much interest in the language so he did not actively force himself to study it or read books in it. He picked up enough during his childhood as well as his Troupe years to be able to make conversation, but I imagine he would struggle to express more complex concepts. This opposite situation makes communication about specific topics between him and Akito difficult, and Hikaru sometimes needs to act as a translator between them. Its not to a degree where he needs to mediate every few seconds but I imagine Junpei would occasionally ask Hikaru to TL a specific word he's thinking of to English, or to explain metaphorical phrases that don't make sense in JPN.
HIKARU: He grew up billingual from the start, speaking in English with his mother and in a mix of English and Japanese with his father who wanted him to stay in touch with the paternal side of the family (though that didn't happen.) Hazel wanted her son to be well educated so she encouraged this even if she disliked the laizzes faire way Noel coparented Hikaru. When Hazel and Hikaru moved to Japan, Hikaru was able to speak and read at the same level as children *slightly* younger than him, so he was put into a grade below his age group. While this was a good academic decision, it may have widened the gap between him and his peers. Hikaru only graduated high school a year before the main story bc of this. But yeah he is very well spoken in both languages and tends to use literary language that sometimes evades Akito and Junpei. I imagine he can also stutter through some Italian (there is Italian in music theory which is his special interest so he probably looked up further reading)
Arisu is a native JPN speaker. She went to a Catholic mission school where she learned decent English, and I'd say with the degree of foreign media she consumes she is almost as fluent as Hikaru (though she does not express herself as flowery - she is a little more shy in ENG than she is in JPN which is part of the reason whyit took a while for her to open up to Akito.) She also took seven years of German (could probably pass some proficiency exams but I don't think she'd venture into a full blown convo with a German) and three years of Latin (she still remembers some declensions but if you asked her to say something in Latin she would stare blankly before saying something like "una birundo non facit ver" or some other dicta et sententia that students learn without understanding the sentence structure LOL.
So when you bring it together, the 4 of them can only communicate in English, but Junpei Hikaru and Arisu fall into conversation in JPN ariund Akito a LOT so he ends up kind of sidelined 😅 he will bother Hikaru until he translates for him tho. So yeah Himiraku ENG, Himiraku - Akito JPN. Notably though, Hikaru and Arisu will seamlessly mix in English words and phrases into the conversations where it's just the two of them together a lot more than others do, because they use ENG enough that a sentiment sometimes naturally forms itself in English in their heads and they don't bother too much to translate it. Also, Hikaru learned to sing one Croatian song from Akito called "I am a Dalmatian" (Dalmatia is the region of CRO where Akito lived not the dog breed) & he can very nearly perfectly pronounce the lyrics (because Croatian consonants sound the same way Japanese do, and wovels sound similarly to the way English does - I think a billingual JPN+ENG person would speak Croatian a lot more easily than one who can solely speak either language :)!) In the extra chapter where Hikaru and Arisu visit Croatia, Hikaru spreads joy among the locals by singing Dalmatinac sam.
