Selwyn Birchwood Interview: Blues Sorcery
BY JORDAN MAINZER
“Blues musicians are exorcists,” Selwyn Birchwood told me over the phone last month. In some ways, Birchwood is a traditional blues artist like the magicians he refers to. The Tampa guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter, who cut his teeth playing with Sonny Rhodes and has opened for Buddy Guy and Robert Cray, wields a dusty voice and expressive guitar style, traversing the worlds of Chicago blues and Southern soul, subjects from heartbreak to swamp folklore. In other ways, though, he’s uniquely modern. For one, unlike blues stars then and now, Birchwood doesn’t play covers, standards, or traditional tunes. He also doesn’t write original songs that border on self-parody because they try so hard to sound like standards; instead, his pieces are biographical, centered in the places they were created and aim to illustrate, skirting notions of rockist purity to use contemporary recording techniques. And thankfully, his songs still do rock, whether emphasizing Birchwood’s lap steel, longtime baritone saxophonist Regi Oliver’s horns, or the rhythm section’s deftly controlled tempos.
Exorcist, Birchwood’s latest album out tomorrow via Alligator Records, is Birchwood’s most assured release yet. “I’ve always felt like I’ve been trying to find my own sound, and with this album, I’m confident [I have],” Birchwood said. “The music is imaginative, with real emotion and relatability.” From the soulful and sharp opener “Done Cryin’” to the album’s upbeat closing instrumental “Show Tune”, Birchwood takes us on a journey through not only the weird creeks and absurd depths of his home state, but the peaks and valleys of his mind. Of course, “FLorida Man”, given today’s political climate, is a hilarious standout. Beginning with studio recordings of real news headlines to come out of the Sunshine State, Birchwood leads the band through a horrified, yet strangely affectionate tour of the place “where rebel flags meet Mickey Mouse”. (“People outside of Florida think we are crazy. People inside of FLorida KNOW we’re crazy!” Birchwood has said about the track.) And the mighty “Swim At Your Own Risk” features field recordings from “a woodsy area by my house,” Birchwood said. “I put it all together on my laptop. COVID put me headfirst into [editing].”
Sure, Birchwood’s enraptured-but-doomed relationship songs, from the “love gone terrifying” title track to the blistering, 6-minute “love gone wrong” jam “Horns Below Her Halo”, are phenomenal. But the true centerpieces come when Birchwood has time to reflect. “Plenty More To Be Grateful For” is a refreshing slice of perspective, 7 minutes of pure blues, while “Underdog” is a bit of psychedelic autobiography. And piano jaunt “ILa-View” perfectly combines Birchwood’s contemplations with knowing smirks, his similes for his affection akin to vices rather than romantic expressions. “I’ve heard so many songs that say, 'I love you,’ so if I say, 'I love you like the church loves money,' you believe me now,” Birchwood said, displaying the same sense of humor that’s obvious on record.
Birchwood’s last record, Living in a Burning House, made #1 on the Billboard Blues Chart, and he admitted he’d like to see Exorcist “hit some of the same numbers.” More importantly, though, he’s always looking to experiment. For instance, he played bass on a few songs on Exorcist, his first time doing so on a recorded album. In general, he recognizes that any record is momentary. “The finished albums are a snapshot,” he said. “I’m always moving, always growing.” One thing, though, will never change: Birchwood will continue to wield his voice and his axe, whether expelling the evil spirits of lost love and rabid demons, or even just sitting back and appreciating how far he’s come.

Eiffel 65 - Blue (Da Ba Dee) 1998
"Blue (Da Ba Dee)" is a song by Italian music group Eiffel 65. It was first released in October 1998 in Italy and became internationally successful the following year. It is the lead single of the group's 1999 debut album, Europop.
The song initially found success in France, where it debuted in August 1999 and reached number one for three weeks. It then found success in other European countries, reaching the top spot on many charts in September the same year. It became one of the biggest-selling songs of 1999, reaching number one in at least 18 countries, charting at number three in Italy, and peaking at number six on the US Billboard Hot 100 in January 2000. It reached number one in Australia, New Zealand and Canada. In the UK, the song initially entered the top 40 purely on import sales; it was only the third single to do this. The song re-charted on 6 May 2013 at number 40 in the UK, following its inclusion in Iron Man 3.
The song received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Dance Recording at the 2001 Grammy Awards. "Blue (Da Ba Dee)" has also been heavily sampled and remixed in later years.
The accompanying music video for the song was released in 1999 by BlissCoMedia, a computer graphics division of Bliss Corporation, and featured computer-generated graphics that were done in 3ds Max. With very few resources, tutorials and books, and only one editing machine, the video was made between 1998 and 1999 in a garage in about two to three months.
"Blue (Da Ba Dee)" received a total of 75,2% yes votes!

Events In The History And Of The Life Of Elvis Presley Today On The 5th, Of September In 1956.
September 5Th, In 1956 Elvis Presley surprised his mother Glady's with a gift of a pink Cadillac.
SEPTEMBER 5, 1956 – Elvis Presley surprised his mother with a gift of a pink Cadillac. In early 1955, Elvis bought his first Cadillac, a 1954 Fleetwood Series 60, which was the color pink. The car provided transport for Elvis and the Blue Moon Boys, but after the failure of a brake lining, was destroyed in a roadside fire between Hope and Texarkana, Arkansas, on June 5, 1955.
On July 5, 1955, Elvis Presley purchased a new Cadillac Fleetwood Series 60 in blue with a black roof. Having mentioned a Pink Cadillac in the song “Baby, Let’s Play House,” the first song recorded by Elvis Presley to appear on a national chart which made #5 on the Billboard Country Singles chart in July 1955; Elvis Presley had the car repainted by Art, a neighbor on Lamar Street. Art designed a customized pink color for Elvis Presley which he named “Elvis Rose,” but the car kept its black roof. Once the car was finished Elvis gave it to his mother Gladys as a gift. But Mrs. Gladys Presley never had a driver’s license, and Elvis Presley drove the car with the members of his band for most of 1955–1956.Rare candid photo's in color of Elvis Presley and the original pink cadillac restored to its former glory outside of Graceland and b/w candid photo's of Elvis Presley posing with the pink cadillac and is father vernon and mother glady's.

Larry Williams - She Said Yeah
‘Larry Williams (May 10, 1935 January 7, 1980) was an American rhythm and blues and rock and roll singer, songwriter and pianist from New Orleans, Louisiana. Williams is best known for writing and recording some rock and roll classics from 1957 to 1959 for Specialty Records, including "Bony Moronie", "Short Fat Fannie", "Bad Boy", "Dizzy Miss Lizzie" and "She Said Yeah," which were later covered by British Invasion groups and other artists. John Lennon, in particular, was a fan of Williams, recording several of his songs over the course of his career. "Bony Maronie" is listed as one of the Top 500 songs that shaped Rock and Roll.
Williams lived a life mixed with tremendous success and violence-fueled drug addiction. He was a long-time friend of Little Richard. As a child in New Orleans, Williams learned how to play piano. When he was a teenager, he and his family moved to Oakland, California, where he joined a local R&B group called the Lemon Drops. In 1954, when he was 19 years old, Williams went back to New Orleans for a visit. He began work as Lloyd Price's valet and developed a friendship with Little Richard Penniman, who was recording at the time in New Orleans. Price and Penniman were both recording for Specialty Records at the time. Williams was introduced to Specialty's house producer, Robert Blackwell, and was signed to record.
In 1957, Little Richard was Specialty's biggest star, but bolted from Rock and Roll to pursue the ministry. Williams was quickly groomed by Blackwell to try to replicate his success. Using the same raw, shouting vocals and piano-driven intensity, Williams scored with a number of hit singles. Williams' three biggest successes were "Short Fat Fannie", which was his first hit, reaching #5 in Billboard's pop chart, "High School Dance", which also made #5, and "Bony Moronie", which peaked at #14. Both "Short Fat Fanny" and "Bony Moronie" sold over one million copies, gaining gold discs. Several of his songs achieved later success as revivals by The Beatles ("Bad Boy", "Slow Down", and "Dizzy Miss Lizzy"); The Rolling Stones ("She Said Yeah"); and John Lennon's versions of "Bony Moronie" and "Dizzy Miss Lizzy".
Williams had been involved with underworld activity since his early teens, and had reputedly been a pimp before he ever recorded music. After 1957 Williams did not have much success selling records. He recorded a number of songs in 1958 and 1959, including "Heebie Jeebies", with band members such as Plas Johnson on tenor sax and Alvin "Red" Tyler on baritone, Barney Kessel on guitar, Gerald Wilson on trumpet, Ernie Freeman or Williams himself on piano, and Earl Palmer on drums. He was convicted of dealing narcotics in 1960 and served a jail term, setting back his career considerably.
Williams made a comeback in the mid-1960s with a funky soul band that included Johnny "Guitar" Watson, which paired him musically with Little Richard who had been lured back into secular music. He produced two Little Richard albums for Okeh Records in 1966 and 1967, which returned Little Richard to the Billboard album chart for the first time in ten years and spawned the hit single Poor Dog. He also acted as the music director for the Little Richard's live performances at the Okeh Club. Bookings for Little Richard during this period skyrocketed. Williams also recorded and released material of his own and with Watson, with some moderate chart success. This period may have garnered few hits but produced some of his best and most original work.
Williams also began acting in the 1960s, appearing on film in Just for the Hell of It (1968), The Klansman (1974), and Drum (1976).
In the 1970s, there was also a brief dalliance with disco, but Williams' wild lifestyle continued. By the middle of the decade, the drug abuse and violence was taking its toll. In 1977, Williams pulled a gun on and threatened to kill his long-time friend, Little Richard, over a drug debt. They were both living in Los Angeles and addicted to cocaine. Little Richard bought drugs from him, arranged to pay him later, but did not show up because he was high. Williams was furious. He hunted him down but ended up showing compassion on his long-time friend after Little Richard repaid the debt. This, along with other factors, led to Little Richard's return to born again Christianity and the ministry, but Williams would not escape LA's seedy underworld.'

Big Mama Thornton (1926-1984) solo Songs: "Hound Dog," "Ball and Chain" Propaganda: "known for her swagger and larger-than-life presence, big mama thornton was a blues and r&b singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who was a key figure in the lineage of rock & roll. a self-taught musician, she started touring as a teenager and was quickly dubbed "the new bessie smith". to quote the rock & roll hall of fame: "Thornton’s live performances were legendary. Standing just as tall – if not towering over – the men with whom she shared the stage, Thornton not only sang harder than her male contemporaries, she reportedly also outperformed and outdrank them nightly." inspired by seeing her perform, songwriting duo jerry lieber and mike stoller wrote "hound dog" for her which became a hit, topping the r&b charts for seven weeks and selling over half a million copies (three years later it became an even bigger hit for some guy named elvis). she also wrote the song "ball and chain" which janis joplin covered and popularized in the 60s."

When Pro Hero Touya gets into a fake relationship with ultra popular Number Three, Hawks, there is a lot he doesn’t expect.
He gets the idea for the best/worst of reasons: with All Might’s retirement, Endeavor is a few months away from snatching the Number One spot Touya was created to claim. In short, Touya is such an appalling failure that Endeavor has to go take it himself as a fifty years old man. The thought of catching an accidental glimpse of the next Billboard Chart on TV makes Touya sick to his stomach.
So he’s glad he gets a chance to make it fun, instead.
When he gets a little too desperate, overusing his blue flames past the point of safety that his support equipment guarantees to catch the villain that is wreaking havoc above Musutafu, the fire dies out unprecedentedly and he falls, hitting his head on the way, to what might have been his death, had Hawks not caught him with his feathers.
Back to his senses, Touya is annoyed at first because Hawks saved him in front of the entire city and too close to his father’s agency for comfort.
There’s also the fact that Touya loathes Hawks: he’s a smug prick who constantly gets Touya’s hero name wrong (it’s Wildfire, not Firefly, thank you very much) to the point people have started addressing to Touya with the incorrect one; he’s unfairly handsome and unscattered, he has everything Touya tries to reach despite knowing he isn’t cut for it, and is so casual about it too.
And yet when his father shows up and he looks livid about Hawks holding Touya in his arms to check on his conditions on the sidewalk, especially with people watching, Touya bathes into the feeling. Endeavor apparently hates seeing his son in the safe arms of another man, an act deeming him unfit to even protect his own son, questioning his role as a hero.
What Enji hates, Touya wants to prolong.
The angrier his father looks, the more Touya clings to Hawks, hands around the collar of his jacket, delighted to the point where he insists he’ll agree to go to the hospital for a check-up - just to be sure - only if Hawks’ the one to fly him there. The disappointment on Endeavor’s face is the most attention he’s given to Touya since Shouto was born.
So he gets an idea. He wants that attention and disappointment on himself, wants the spotlight on his father’s biggest day, so that he can claim back what belongs to him, not just a birth right but as a fucking birth cause.
He gives Hawks a once in a lifetime opportunity - dating Touya - who has nothing to offer to him in return, because Hawks already has everything.
(The first red flag should have been Hawks agreeing to it, since he has nothing to win and the reasons he gave sounded like incoherent excuses, but Touya is a simple man: he’s too focused on ruining his father’s life to care; he notices the clues, but ignores them for his own gain).
Touya is too preoccupied with his own plan to realize Hawks has one of his own.
And then, as the months go by, he’s too preoccupied with his own family drama and falling a little too hard for the guy he loathes and is supposed to be fake dating, to realize the way Hawks gets closer to his family is not casual.
He’s too invested in the way the relationship he built to spite his father actually brings him closer to his siblings, and even Endeavor himself somehow; he’s too puzzled by how much of an accidental bridge Hawks is between him and Shouto, to whom he wouldn’t even talk to before; too enchanted with how much happier his mom looks when Touya visits with his ‘boyfriend’ rather than alone; he’s too invested - to the point he starts losing track of his own goal, the Hero Billboard Chart, and of the boundaries supposedly existing between Hawks and him, to realize that Hawks is everything that is rotten and that Touya wishes to destroy about their hero society; the reason he became a hero in the first place, to make that change happen.
So it’s a hard one to swallow, discovering a little too late that Hawks is not only dirty and complicit in everything that destroyed Touya’s life.
He finds out when he’s already fallen in love with Hawks that Hawks is someone else; when his family has fallen in love with Hawks for good measure and in love back with Touya thanks to him; when his father is one week away from being the Number One Hero and he specifically asked that Touya of all people be there. Not Shouto, him. And it’s even more devastating that it happens because Hawks starts getting sloppy around him the way Touya has been; and Touya has to find a report that specifically details a lot of their relationship to the HPSC.
Not the fake one, because they are evidently aware of it.
The real one.
The one beneath, the moments when Touya just loved Hawks and pretended like it was part of the gig.
The ones that evidently Hawks recognizes as different from the pretense and yet he decided to sell them away so easily anyway to report on every detail of the Todoroki family to the Commission.
And the worst of it all is he doesn’t even see it.
When they fight, Touya can finally see Hawks for what he is: a lost little boy who is completely brainwashed, to the point he can’t seem to notice the timing of the task he was given, the evident purpose behind it: the Commission wants Endeavor gone because they want Hawks, their puppet, their golden, loyal executioner, to take the first spot. Hawks has an actual mental wall that Touya doesn’t know how to break, especially while feeling like he’s about to break himself. So he just threatens to burn Hawks alive in case he ever comes close to anyone from his family again and leaves. Having everything back and losing it all over again is sickening.
Touya wishes he had just accepted a fate where his family was broken and unfixable rather than this.
He wishes he had just dealt with it like a gracious loser, instead of trying, of getting involved again, considering in the end he just lost another, new person he loves.

ALL-AMERICAN BITCH! ˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥ THE PRE-RELEASE SINGLE
All-American Bitch! is the first pre-release single by Mari Bang off of her upcoming album Cherry Pie. The song was released by MGM Records in partnership with Rainbow Entertainment on June 4th, 2024.
This single was Mari's most controversial release to date, for several reasons, including the timing of the release and the subject matter of the song. Fans on all sides of the issue were at each other's throats online, yet the girls involved were largely silent on the issue, only adding fuel to the fire. But as they say, any publicity is good publicity, and all the buzz surrounding the song only made it that much more successful. The song peaked at number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100, while also charting in over 10 other countries, including South Korea.
˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥ i. the music video
♡ . The music video opens with a pristinely blonde Mari waking up in the morning, stretching and climbing out of bed almost cartoonishly perfect in Coca-Cola can curlers and a silk nightgown. As she sings the beginnings of the first verse, we see her getting ready in the mirror, spraying her curls with hairspray and touching up perfect red lips. She's depicted as the perfect housewife, 1950s style. She's lounging about her house, reading magazines, popping berries in her mouth, and sipping from perspiring glass Coke bottles (Mari earned a brand deal with Coke for this video, and it's a bit painfully obvious throughout the video). However, as the song carries on, picking up it's pop-rock tones, Mari begins to get more and more manic. Instead of cooking and cleaning like your typical housewife, she's destroying the house, knocking over furniture and smashing vases, even taking a hammer to the vintage-looking TV in the living room running a Coca-Cola ad with her own face pictured. As the bridge builds, she's seen aggressively eating a cherry pie with her hands, running the bright red filling down her cheeks and over her face as she screams, sitting on the linoleum kitchen floor. As the song comes to a slower close, we see her wandering through the mess she's made, an unsettling smile on her face, until the last note where she runs her messy, cherry-red fingers across the camera lens, blurring the scene from view.
˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥ ii. the styling
♡ . heavily vintage americana inspired
♡ . red, white, and blue, ruffles, lace, bows, gingham, short and sweet
♡ . she's here to bring back real coquette!
˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥ iii. the highlights
♡ . whew! this one was divisive!
♡ . the controversy started when the single was announced only 2 days after the announcement of la vie's new album... and the release date was set for only 3 days after the album's release date...
♡ . fans were immediately thrown off by this and even some loyal mari stans were questioning the timing
♡ . it only got worse when the day of la vie's release, mari announced the upcoming release of her own album
♡ . of course, it was all stan twitter could talk about, even non-kpoppies and non-lovies were choosing sides
♡ . then, when the song actually released, everyone had an opinion on it
♡ . k-netz and k-lovies were furious over the title, claiming she was disregarding her korean heritage and beginning her career in kpop
♡ . while certain people in the western media believed she couldn't possibly dub herself "all-american" when she's still essentially just a kpop girl
♡ . in an interview with teen vogue for her summer cover spread, she had this to say:
♡ . "i know, it's ridiculous! i'm too korean for america and too american for korea? i don't understand why i have to pick a side when in my heart, i'm equally both. it's like they're proving the point of the song even more. clearly i'm not perfect, and this society only makes that more suffocating. just let me be me!"
♡ . she appeared on several live shows to promote her single release and her upcoming album including jimmy kimmel, good morning america, and snl
♡ . in her appearance on snl, she appeared in 2 sketches, one as a middle school chorus kid, and one with bowen yang spoofing how native english-speaking kpop idols are treated in the states ("wow, your english is so good!")
♡ . she made her first music festival appearance on day 2 at gov ball!
♡ . she made quick friends with both sabrina carpenter and tyla, featuring in each other's instagram posts from the event as well
♡ . despite all the controversy among fans regarding her relationship with the other members of la vie, she never made any statement regarding the topic
♡ . she did mention the members casually in her teen vogue interview, although very briefly
♡ . many were left wondering why the sudden coldness after it seemed everything was good again during their previous comeback?
♡ . despite the divisiveness, this single release was very successful for her and only bodes even better for the upcoming release of her 3rd album, cherry pie !

The fact that Louis Tomlinson performed two covers of One Direction songs at his May 26 show at the Mohegan Sun Arena should not be a surprise.
After all, he was a member of the best-selling boy band and one of its chief songwriters.
The fact that he performed a cover by Arctic Monkeys, however, would be a surprise if you had not updated your vision of Tomlinson since his pop days with 1D.
The rocking performance at the Uncasville arena, thanks to Tomlinson’s honesty and sincerity as he attacked his material, clearly indicated that his preferred sound of the moment is the Brit Pop pioneered by Arctic Monkeys– and not the boy band groove of One Direction.
While his former bandmate Harry Styles has gone all metrosexual sophisticated as he mines his own 21st century brand of smart pop, Tomlinson favors guitar solos and intensity in his post-1D universe.
The Brit has not gone completely Led Zeppelin on us, full of blues and devoid of hooks. There were plenty of catchy melodic turns of phrase that captured the ear beneath the power chords and helped grab hold of the hearts and ears of a primarily female audience that likely had not reached their junior year of high school yet.
The rocking sound was not about career opportunities or slumming. It was clear this is where Tomlinson’s heart and soul belonged.
That said, Tomlinson’s chosen genre also has been a good career choice.
By all rights, since One Direction was launched in 2010 (when Tomlinson was still in his teens), most of the 16-year-olds who swooned over him in the second decade of the 21st century would be at the cusp of their 30s at a concert in 2023. But most of Tomlinson’s fans at the Mohegan were on the younger side of the teens with only a scattering of old school 1D fans in the mix.
Tomlinson’s musical mood swing has revitalized his continuing commercial prospects. His current album, the mighty fine “Faith in the Future” debuted at number 5 on the Billboard charts.
All the more amazing at the Friday night show is that the young crowd at the Mohegan seemed to know every word from each song on Tomlinson’s setlist. At times, they even drowned out the artist.
Tomlinson clearly has snagged the hearts and souls of a new generation of fans.
When I first listened to “Faith in the Future” last year, I was hearing hints of old school emo. But in concert, the Arctic Monkeys’ references were clear. However, even more clear for me was Tomlinson’s fondness for Oasis. That 1990s-era band was prone to Beatle-esque flourishes with grand arrangements that caused the heart to swell and fists to elevate as they were pumped in the air. And many of the songs performed by Tomlinson in Uncasville on this Friday night had those sweeping moments that carried you along to emotional crescendos.
Tomlinson’s rock and roll inclinations carried over to the stage show itself.
The first night of the tour found Tomlinson surrounded by edgy lighting with oblique and abstract video projections. There were a couple of times where the lighting reminded me of something that a band like goth-godparents Bauhaus or Sisters of Mercy would implement. It also reminded me of latter-day David Bowie shows.
Rather than guiding the emotions with videos that tell a story (which many artists will do), Tomlinson’s stage set a mood for the songs and left the internal storytelling of the songs to the fans themselves.
The stage and lighting were the antithesis of what Tomlinson might have found himself in his One Direction days.
One Direction, for most musicians, would be a hard act to follow. But Tomlinson’s Mohegan show demonstrates there is quite a vibrant rock and roll life after Simon Cowell (One Direction’s one-time career commandant) for this singer.
Tomlinson set the stage for a night of rock with his selection of opening acts. Snarls offered up a hard-hitting punkish set with a heavy musical punch. The four-man crew The Academic gave the crowd a melodic new wave-twinged set that would easily have found favor in the colorful days of the 1980s.

Stevie Wonder - Superstition 1972
"Superstition" is a song by American singer-songwriter Stevie Wonder. It was released on October 24, 1972, as the lead single from his fifteenth studio album, Talking Book (1972). The lyrics describe popular superstitions and their negative effects. It reached number one in the US Billboard Hot 100 in January 1973 and on the soul singles chart. It was Wonder's first number one single since "Fingertips, Pt. 2" in 1963. It peaked at number eleven in the UK Singles Chart in February 1973. In November 2004, Rolling Stone ranked the song number 74 on its list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. It was re-ranked number 73 on its 2010 list, and number 12 on its 2021 list. At the 16th Grammy Awards, the song earned Wonder two Grammys: Best Rhythm & Blues Song and Best R&B Vocal Performance, Male. In 1998, the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
English guitarist Jeff Beck was an admirer of Wonder's music, and Wonder was informed of this prior to the Talking Book album sessions. Although at this point Stevie Wonder was playing virtually all of the instruments on his songs by himself, he preferred to let other guitarists play on his records, and he liked the idea of a collaboration with Beck. An agreement was quickly made for Beck to become involved in the sessions that became the Talking Book album, in return for Wonder writing him a song. Between the album sessions, Beck came up with the opening drum beat. Wonder told Beck to keep playing while he improvised over the top of it. He improvised most of the song, including the riff, on the spot. Beck and Wonder created a rough demo for the song that day. After finishing the song, Wonder decided that he would allow Beck to record "Superstition" as part of their agreement. Originally, the plan was for Beck to release his version of the song first, with his newly formed power trio Beck, Bogert & Appice. However, due to the combination of the trio's debut album getting delayed and Motown CEO Berry Gordy's prediction that "Superstition" would be a huge hit and greatly increase the sales of Talking Book, Wonder released the song as the Talking Book lead single months ahead of Beck's version, the latter being issued in March 1973 on the Beck, Bogert & Appice album.
"Superstition" received a total of 91,5% yes votes!

National Day of the Cowboy
Saddle up and get ready to ride into the sunset with the thrill and excitement of the Wild West! Cowboys are the ultimate symbol of grit, determination, and adventure.
Giddyup! Ride ‘em Cowboy!
Celebrate this symbol of the American West by learning about and appreciating the National Day of the Cowboy.
History of National Day of the Cowboy
Following the Civil War, many men moved west looking for ways to work and make a living. One of the attractions of the American frontier was the relative freedom, as well as the option to become cowboys who could access free range cattle.
The “Wild West”, beginning in the 1860s through the end of the 19th century, became a time of a bit of chaos on the frontier where gangs of criminals were easily bred. Infamous cowboys, like Billy the Kid, Jesse James, Butch Cassidy and John Wesley Hardin were outlaws who committed various robberies, cattle rustling and even murder.
First sponsored in the US Senate in 2005, National Day of the Cowboy was originally brought about by Wyoming’s US Senator at the time, Craig Thomas.
Former president Bush said this about the National Day of the Cowboy: “We celebrate the Cowboy as a symbol of the grand history of the American West. The Cowboy’s love of the land and love of the country are examples for all Americans.”
National Day of the Cowboy Timeline
1725
The term “cowboy” is first being used
Jonathan Swift uses the word in his famous book, Gulliver’s Travels, but it really just means a boy who tends cows.
Mid-1800s
The “Wild West” period begins
After the American Civil War, many men head to Texas where free-ranging cattle are available for any cowboy who wants to round them up – and the popularity of eating beef increases.
1875
“Billy the Kid” is first arrested
This infamous cowboy criminal is a gunfighter, murderer, fugitive, cattle rustler, and eventually dies at the young age of 21.
1930
John Wayne first appears in film
The Big Trail is the first movie that actor “Duke” Morrison makes in what will be a series of more than 75 films over his lifetime.
1960
Dallas Cowboys are founded
In the early days of the National Football League (NFL), the Dallas Cowboys franchise was established and went on to become an extremely popular team.
How to Celebrate National Day of the Cowboy
Celebrating National Day of the Cowboy can be loads of fun in a variety of ways! Try out some of these delightful ideas to enjoy the day:
Dress Like a Cowboy
This can be a way to connect with your inner cowboy by wearing some special gear to work, to school or just while running daily errands. Try out some basic blue jeans, some clever cowboy boots, a leather vest and a western shirt (complete with shell snaps!).
Perhaps try a bolo tie or a handkerchief tied around the neck. And, of course, it would be appropriate to top it all off with an enormous cowboy hat. The bigger, the better!
Listen to a Cowboy Song Playlist
Because they typically hail from the southwest, cowboys may have a particular style of music they enjoy. National Day of the Cowboy would be a perfect time to create a list of songs that give a nod to the tunes of these unique characters:
Mommas, Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboysby Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson (1978). This one was originally recorded by Ed Bruce in 1976, but this more popular version was recorded two years later.
Cowboy Take Me Away by The Chicks–formerly Dixie Chicks (1999). A play on the phrase “Calgon Take Me Away”, from the famous slogan from bath product commercials, this song reached #1 on the US Billboard Hot Country Singles and Tracks chart in February 2000.
Cowboy Cassanova by Carrie Underwood (2009). Released on Underwood’s third studio album, Play On, the single was certified 2x Platinum.
The Cowboy in Me by Tim McGraw (2001). Written by Jeffrey Steele, Al Anderson and Craig Wiseman, this song made it to #1 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles and Tracks chart that year.
Visit a Rodeo
A great time for enjoying all things related to National Day of the Cowboy, visiting the rodeo can be an amazing experience! Regular events include activities such as steer wrestling, bull riding, calf roping, steer roping, bareback horse, barrel racing and saddle bronc riding. Of course, don’t forget the scorecard for keeping score.
Don’t forget to wear the above-mentioned cowboy gear when headed to the rodeo. Those who are lucky might get to see a rodeo clown. Perhaps even try riding the mechanical bull!
Follow Some Sage Cowboy Advice
Cowboys from the Wild West have lived a great deal of life and have tons of experience! With all of that experience comes a great deal of wisdom and they have often been known to share their advice with others in clever phrases, like “Don’t squat with your spurs on”, or “Never corner something meaner than you”.
Enjoy a few of these phrases and consider sharing them with friends, family and coworkers in honor of National Day of the Cowboy. Some of them might even be fun to have printed on a t-shirt to wear on the day:
“Don’t go in if you don’t know the way out.”
“If you get thrown from a horse, you have to get up and get back on, unless you landed on a cactus; then you have to roll around and scream in pain.”
“Some cowboys have too much tumbleweed in their blood to settle down.”
“If you’re ridin’ ahead of the herd, take a look back every now and then to make sure it’s still there with ya.”
Watch Some Cowboy Movies
One of the great film settings of all time, the Wild West is the perfect place for cowboy movies to be made! This day offers a great time to enjoy a collection of classic Western movies in honor of National Day of the Cowboy! Try out one (or all!) of these:
True Grit (1969). One of John Wayne’s most famous movies, this film features a US Marshal and Texas Ranger who chases down a murderer in dangerous territory. It was remade in 2010, starring Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, Hailee Steinfeld and Josh Brolin.
Rango (2011). Fun for adults and family members alike, this computer animated Western comedy film stars Johnny Depp who voices a chameleon character who accidentally gets stranded in the desert.
The Lone Ranger (1956). This classic cowboy film was based on the American television series of the same name that was from 1949-1957, starring Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels.
No Country for Old Men (2007). Tommy Lee Jones, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin and Woody Harrelson are the all-star cast in this modern Western crime thriller movie created by the Coen brothers. Based on the 2005 novel of the same name by Cormac McCarthy, this film won a huge array of film awards.
Are cowboys real?
Yes. Although they are less common than they may have been several decades ago, the American cowboy continues in places like Colorado, Texas, Montana, and even Connecticut.
How did cowboys dress?
Cowboys are known for their pointy leather cowboy boots, vests with pockets and very large cowboy hats.
What are cowboy hats made of?
Cowboy hats are typically made of either felt or straw. Less commonly, they can be made of leather.
Do cowboys ride cows?
No! Cowboys ride horses, of course. They are called cowboys because they take care of and drive cattle herds.
How do cowboys talk?
Depending on where they are from, cowboys may have unique phrases like “Howdy Partner”, “Giddyup”, “City Slicker”, and “Head ‘em up and move ‘em out”.
