the doctor was SUCH a funny little cunt this episode. canonically just landing in stranger's homes or hotels to steal milk. buying his own fan merch. critiquing vintage lesbian sexts. bullying the shit out of the north star. emotionally domming trev and then not even noticing he died. yelling "just live in the moment!" at someone who was freaking out about having only seconds left to live. not even offering his poor gf a ride in the tardis. "when the doctor's in the room it's Mansplain Central" at least he's self-aware lmfao

the thing that makes Ben & Polly’s post-canon eu stuff quite so appealing is that their relationship is definitely not something out of a fairytale, but it’s totally something out of a myth

they start off as these completely different, unrelated characters brought together by the strangest and most random events, but after that they can’t get away from each other, ever. It doesn’t matter who they’re in love with or who they marry or live with or have kids with, all that’s on the sidelines in the story of their lives - they’ll always come back to each other, they’re everything to each other, and not just in the ‘you mean the world to me’ romantic way. They’re literally everything to each other. They’re the person they love and the person they’re annoyed with. They’re a couple. They’re a mess. They’re the person they try to be independent from and the only person who they can ever talk with openly. They’re flirting. They’re not. They’re together. They broke up. They’re siblings. They’re friends. They’re just someone they have a past with. They’re where their futures keep leading them.

I know the idea of “soulmates” as a trope is usually seen as a romantic thing but I think this kind of dynamic is literally the most powerful/interesting thing you could do with it. What are they? Doesn’t matter, they’re Ben & Polly, Polly & Ben. They’re characters who go together despite whatever else is going on in their lives. In a story with just one, the other’s absence is felt. I suppose in dr who land the word for them is actually a fixed point. It doesn’t matter how or why they end up together, or much time or how many big life events take place without each other, the result is always the same. And as trying and frustrating and exhausting as that must be for them to live, looked at in a narrative it has a wonderful sense of security to it.
