“I’d like to thank Rudy Clark, who was the guy who actually wrote it [‘Got My Mind Set On You’] years ago and nobody actually noticed it at that time. It was lodged at the back of my brain, and I know I did the sort of pop version of it, Rudy, but if you’re listening, I love it, and we chopped that bit out the middle that we didn’t like and got rid of the screaming girls, but it was a great song, actually, it was a great song.” - George Harrison, Rockline, February 1988 “[‘Got My Mind Set On You,’ recorded by James Ray, was] written by this guy who discovered James Ray, a former mailman named Rudy Clark. [...] Jim Keltner got this drum pattern going one day that was a cross between swing and rock. Gary Wright turned around and said, ‘Hey! Doesn’t that remind you of that song, ‘Got My Mind Set On You?’ [laughter] I was so surprised that anybody else had *ever* heard that tune!” - George Harrison, Musician, November 1987 “My boy [Dhani], while we were recording it [Got My Mind Set On You], he kept saying, That’s the single.” - George Harrison,In The Studio With Redbeard, 1987

50 years ago today, George was hanging out with John and Bob Dylan. According to Gary Wright, they were talking about the possibility of them playing together at Madison square garden.

Album Review: George Harrison "Living in the Material World" 50th Anniversary Edition
Through this blog I've had the honor of covering The Beatles a number of times over the years and just this month I got to review their new box set. Now I am getting the chance to review a new reissue from my favorite Beatle, the Quiet One himself, Sir George Harrison. In 2021 I got to review the 50th anniversary edition of his magnum opus All Things Must Pass, but this is only the second time I've gotten to review a Sir George album. Now to celebrate the 50th anniversary (actually the 51st but who's counting!?!), Living in the Material World is getting the deluxe edition treatment.
Tumblr media
album cover
Originally released on May 30, 1973, it went to #1 on the album charts and went gold in the U.S. It got a remastered released in 2006. Then it was remastered again for inclusion in the 2014 box set The Apple Years 1968-75 (which I named my #1 Reissue Album of 2014). This new 2024 edition was overseen by George's widow Olivia and son Dhani, who have done a great job with his reissues since George's 2001 passing, and a new mix from Paul Hicks, who is part of Dhani’s band Thenewno2 as well as a noteworthy producer who worked on the music for the documentary George Harrison: Living in the Material World. Disc 1 is the 2024 mix of the album. Disc 2 is alt versions and alt takes. Some versions also include a 7" single of the newly unearthed "Sunshine Life For Me (Sail Away Raymond)" and a blu-ray of the deluxe edition in blu-ray audio. There's also some excellent liner notes and photos from that era.

50th anniversary edition
For the album itself, it was a solid follow up to All Things Must Pass...even if it wasn't nearly as amazing as that album. It kicks off with "Give Me Love (Give me Peace on Earth)", the only single off that album. Then it goes into "Sue Me, Sue You Blues", one of the many examples on Beatle solo albums where they were lashing out at each other on their own albums, i.e. John Lennon's "How Do You Sleep?", only this was Sir George's sadness about all of the lawsuits between The Beatles and each other. The album features some trusty musicians including Sir Ringo Starr, who shared drum duties with Jim Keltner, and the late great Gary Wright on keys. But much of the album is about living in the material world and searching for a higher guiding light beyond material things (I'm sure there's a joke that could be made about this box set being a material thing fans need to buy!?!). You always felt like Sir George was hunting higher game than other rockers of his era, especially when you hear an album like this. The alternative takes and rarities are interesting but don't really add much to the album. In the end, it's great to see this get the remastered treatment it deserves!
For info on Living in the Material World
Original album: 4 out of 5 stars
50th Anniversary Edition: 3.5 out of 5 stars

From Gary Wright’s music video for “Don’t Try To Own Me.”
“Although at times he could be reflective and withdrawn, to me he definitely wasn’t the ‘quiet Beatle,’ as the media portrayed him. Once he got on a roll, he didn’t stop talking until he finished his story. At his memorial service, Eric Idle said, ‘We all know that the press called him the “quiet Beatle,” but for those of us who knew him well, we knew different. Once he started talking, he never stopped.’ He also had a great sense of humor. Many times as we were listening to a playback in the control room, he would jump out of his chair and start dancing around like a wild man. At other times, he would make up some moves and play ‘air saxophone,’ as though he was a sax player in Little Richard’s band. But most of all he loved Monty Python and would regularly repeat their hilarious sketches verbatim. It was all part of his personality to laugh and joke around and then pick up a guitar from his incredible collection and launch into a beautiful song that would make you cry.” - Gary Wright, Dream Weaver: Music, Meditation, And My Friendship With George Harrison (2014) (x)

More information about this blog here
Disco has officially breached containment.
I've talked a bit about the stylistic origins of disco from the Philly soul scene and it's growing popularity in the Black and gay community. However, I haven't talked much about disco's presence in mainstream America. And now, since this is the year that Billboard started publishing their national Dance Club Songs charts (the previous two years gathered their data from dance clubs in major cities), this seems like the perfect chance.
To set the stage (or dance floor) for what will happen eventually, disco was everywhere at this moment in time -- not just in the clubs and also not just on the disco stations. As disco became the hot new thing, it seemed like everyone was scrambling to tear off a piece for themselves.
We're also seeing more disco fusions this year. Silly Love Songs by Wings is notable for its disco influence. However, the true sign of the times for me is Wild Cherry's Play That Funky Music. Twenty years before, there was a song on the Billboard Charts called The Rock and Roll Waltz, in which Kay Starr sings about seeing her parents try to dance the waltz to a rock and roll song. For the 1956 poll, I wrote about how this signifies the cultural shift in the mainstream (I like it when songs on here are about music. Gives me more to talk about). Play That Funky Music is notable for similar reasons, as even though it is a blend of these two styles. However, the lyrics seem to suggest that for a rock band to evolve, they had to incorporate funk and disco into their sound. Needless to say, not everyone was thrilled by that message. Parallel to the rise in disco's commercial popularity, the anti-disco backlash was growing as well -- and it was about to get ugly. But we'll get to that later.
Also, the first wave of punk rock was growing in popularity around this time in New York and London. Sadly, we won't see much of this movement represented in these polls. I still felt the need to mention it here, both for its place in music history, and we will be discussing the various descendants of this movement in due time.
