The hot news out of Mattel is that Bill Greening has announced that he has left the Dreamhouse. His Instagram post is worded slightly ambiguously, so it is not clear whether he was part of the recent wave of layoffs or if he chose to leave after seeing the fallout, but either way, it is official: he is no longer a part of Team Mattel.

For those who don't recognise Greening by name, he was the Lead Designer for Barbie Signature, meaning he had a hand in the design of the vast majority of collectibles from the last several years.

As well as a number of collectibles and one of a kind dolls from over the years - in his post announcing his departure from Mattel, he acknowledged that he had been working with them on the Barbie brand for the past 26 years.

According to an article on the CSULB website, his early work with Mattel included playline dolls such as Cool Clips Barbie before moving onwards and upwards into the Signatures line.

And in addition to being Lead Designer for Barbie Signature, he also held the title of Brand Historian - i.e. the person who fact-checks things about Barbie lore for media like the animated canon or the 2023 Barbie film.

Mattel, if you need someone to take on Greening's role as Brand Historian, I am not available, but thank you for asking.

While on the subject of Bill Greening, I must mention my personal favourite Greening dolls. (Not that I can say this with any confidence; by the time this post comes out of my queue, I'll be in a different mood and I'll suddenly think a different Greening Barbie is my favourite.)

But for right now, in this moment, it's Jazz Baby Cabaret Barbie.

A Tribute to Bill Greening

(He's not dead btw. Just got laid off in recent Mattel employee purge)

Former principal designer for Barbie Signature, Bill Greening had worked at Mattel for 26 years. A few days ago, he announced via Instagram that he had "left the Dreamhouse". Although I have no doubt that Greening will go on to design more in the future (hopefully for a company like Integrity Toys, fingers crossed), seeing such a iconic and talented Barbie veteran kicked like this is very sad. It's especially frustrating knowing that Barbie has been dipping their toes into generative AI... Concerning to say the least :(.

It must be very cathartic to be able to make Bill shut up whenever you want with just the press of a button. I'm sure Ford doesn't abuse this ability at all.

Why is Ford even there, you might ask? Well, he either decided he preferred to watch Bill suffer in person over being distantly and repeatedly harassed with the same evil desperation book for the rest of his life, or he got roped into some kind of contrived community service for 1.) all his many counts of interdimensional thievery, and 2.) his ignoring all the very clear warnings to NOT summon Bill in the first place (which I like to imagine is also illegal). Theraprism staff were just like, 'Wait, this guy matters to Bill? Ooh, we can USE that! It might be the only thing that can help him want to get better!' It is not considered that throwing Ford at Bill so soon after Weirdmageddon could instead make them both WORSE - in new and altogether special ways! :D

Anyway, I'm calling it the Community Service AU, and I am most likely not going to do anything else with it beyond appropriating these silly Good Place jokes. So, feel free to adopt the concept if y'all wanna??? Just make sure that Bill is still not allowed to swear, no matter what, full stop. It's gotta be a real linguistic corkblork of a situation for him, is all I'm sayin'.

Before Barbie's younger sister Stacie was ever introduced to the doll line, Barbie had a friend with a remarkably similar name - so similar, that Google will think that you are looking for the little sister.

Stacey was a new friend of Barbie's introduced in 1968 and was one of many Barbie-line dolls of that era to capture the "mod" style. Fittingly, Stacey's official backstory is that she is from England - making her, I believe, the first character in the Barbie doll line who did not herald from North America. This is widely attributed to being because of the British Invasion, making a British friend of Barbie highly sought after.

You can see in the commercial for the Talking Stacey that she also spoke with an English accent.

Stacey had a small handful of releases across the late 60s, with a couple of iterations of Talking Stacey and Twist N Turn Stacey. There were also two Sears-exclusive giftsets for Stacey featuring additional outfits. One of these, Nite Lightning, had a reproduction release in 2006.

The only other appearance that Stacey has made was in 2018, with the release of the Mod Friends Gift Set.

This featured Barbie, Stacey and Christie. Mattel designer Bill Greening spoke at length about the authenticity of this reproduction - including the Twist N Turn torsos and the bendable legs, and a vintage-feeling hair fibre for Christie's hair.

I guess Stacey stopped appearing because she flew back home to England - and now that Barbie's little sister Stacie has become so entrenched, I doubt we'll see Stacey back any time. Maybe in another collector's edition sometime.
