Libertad (Documentary Review)
(This was another Fayetteville Film Festival work I watched about a month ago, but didn't get around to posting my review of. So, here it is now!)
I think this would be a good time to point that I wish the Fayetteville Film Festivals' site would provide a little more detail about the films listed on their front page. Searching almost every single film yielded multiple results of similarly or even identically titled films. Such was the the case in my search for the short documentary "Libertad" which turned up two interesting results of the same title - one being a trailer that looks like it may have been about a transwoman , and the other about a women's mountain biking group in Guatemala. As the latter was the only one I could find the full version of, I decided to write about it, but I do wish there was a way to see the first one as well.
Since we are back in documentary territory there isn't too much of a story this time, but it does talk a lot about the positive impact of the mountain biking group. Guatamela is yet another country that is sadly poisoned by toxic masculinity & bigoted religious attitudes, so many young girls there are raised to not even think about doing something risky or exciting like mountain biking. Thanks to this group, a lot of gals there have found a fun new hobby, and watching the documentary reminded me of how much I used to enjoy bike riding as well, and hope that maybe one day my family and I can get new bicycles and perhaps go bike riding together again. The feeling many of the women had of being the only ones in a group of men is relatable as well, as my own hobbies of both playing and designing video games is a very male-dominated one that often leaves me yearning to meet more queer folks and women who enjoy making games as much as I do. I recall in the past considering looking into a recreational bike riding event as well, but was worried if I would face abuse or bigotry.
The group in question is called world-ride community , and from what I was able to find on google, they are also trans, femme and non-binary friendly, thankfully. They don't operate in the USA but they are present in Nepal, Guatemala, Peru and Lesotho.
If you'd like to check the documentary for yourself, you can view it below! Even if bike riding isn't your thing, there's plenty of beautiful footage of Guatemala to enjoy.

Bike Festival - Open
It was strange attending the bike festival she'd gone to a dozen times as a child, now an adult running her own very adult booth. She didn't even bother to have snacks or apple cider to hand out to kids. They ruined the atmosphere. Fallon stirred at the large pot she had on a burner plate. It was a bit early in the year for mulled wine, but the smell of cinnamon and cloves was certainly drawing people in. Plus it was a good way to get rid of the reds she had in stock that weren't selling. Fallon took her own sip of mulled wine she had off to the side before turning around to find a customer at her booth. "Well, hello," she said in a calm, rolling voice. "Interested in anything today?"

WHERE: Fall Bike Festival
WITH: @sawyerdecker
“Go on, we’ll catch up,” Gabe called to Tyler and Lochlyn as they both sprinted forward a few paces, all too anxious to get started with all the games at the festival. Blowing out a sigh, he glanced over at Sawyer and shook his head, “God, I wish I had just a fucking ounce of their energy.” Once upon a time, he’d been just as spirited as his two children– he figured Sawyer could probably remember that version of him. Back then, he hadn’t been worried about arthritis or acid reflux, but his forties had certainly started to reshape his way of thinking, and Gabe wasn’t so sure he liked that, “Getting old is a bitch– worst idea I ever had.”
But it didn’t have to be all bad. For once, it felt like Gabe and Sawyer were finally beginning to figure things out– slowly, but surely. Since their explosive little display at the brewery, they might have been taking baby steps, but they were still steps in the one direction he’d wanted to walk with Sawyer for years now– and that had to count for something. Rubbing his lips together into a thin line, Gabe reached for her hand, intertwining his fingers with hers in some silent declaration– they were in this, whatever it was, together. “This okay?” He asked, nodding down at their joined hands.

WHERE: Fall Bike Festival
WITH: @taliah-tezel
The honest to god truth was that Reina really had no business hanging around the dunk tank, and yet there she was, toasty after attending a wine tasting earlier and still trying to sink the guy sitting in the hot seat. “Goddamnit,” she cursed as she tossed a ball at the target and missed yet again. Thankfully, her aim with a needle was far better than her throwing skills. Spotting Taliah making her way over, Reina met her halfway and gestured at the dunk tank, “I’ve been trying to sink this fucker for ten minutes,” she griped, waving off yet another taunt from the man. It was bad enough that she kept missing, but he’d started talking shit to her too just to rub it in– which only infuriated the woman even more. “Think I should just run over and smack the button?” Something told Reina that probably wasn’t allowed, but when had she ever cared about rules?
