Foto: Lincoln Baraccat

A little girl named Nina Simone.
Saw a great documentary about her music and life on netflix
That is a great documentary. She also does a live performance in “Summer of Soul” on Hulu, another doc. I highly recommend!
Willie Mae Thornton was a foremother of rock. These kids carry her legacy forward December 11, 2022
"Willie Mae Thornton was born in Alabama, and at a very young age she went out on the road as a blues singer. She was 14 years old and she really never looked back."
Along with Sister Rosetta Tharpe and LaVern Baker, Mahon says that Thornton was one of the foremothers of rock 'n' roll. "When rock 'n' roll was invented a few years after she got her first recording deal, she didn't affiliate herself with that form. She thought rock 'n' roll was just the blues speeded up, but what's interesting is that the rock 'n' rollers thought she was interesting. She laid a template for a sound and an attitude."
Thornton recorded "Hound Dog" in 1952, four years before Elvis, and she wrote "Ball 'n' Chain," which became a big hit for Janis Joplin in 1968. Mahon says Thornton carried the torch of the blues while refusing to dim her light. "She was a person who was just her own self, unapologetically so. The idea of self-expression is so crucial."

Disclaimer:
This is part of a series of polls I want to make. This set of musicians are those who were making rock music prior to the late 1970s/1980s, (That is why artists like Prince and Tina Turner are not featured on here). As well as this not including subgenres of rock like punk, metal, funk rock and so forth.
I also just wanted to make this so I could probably get some suggestions on BLACK musicians that made rock music. It's not a contest, I just want to see which musicians some people like and for this to be a way for people to discover them.
Other Polls:
Punk
Metal
Randomly selected musicians in rock
#polls#classic rock#sister rosetta tharpe#betty davis#chuck berry#little richard#jimi hendrix#fats domino#big mama thornton#bo diddley#without big mama thornton there would be no elvis. I SAID WHAT I SAID!#had to do this again because i forgot u cant edit polls

I saw you liked them soooo 🔀 and photocheer? 👀
I saw literally one post about them and went feral. Like forget Eddie being annoyed about having a crush on a cheerleader can you imagine if it was JONATHAN??? Delicious, I'm obsessed.
And...okay...the song that came up was Big Mama Thorton's rendition of "Wade in the Water" 😭 I'm...
Okay, so Jonathan's doing his thing, right? Going around Hawkins and taking pictures of stuff. He's maybe in an adventurous/nature-oriented mood that day, so he's wandering through the woods taking pictures of stuff. And then he winds up out the outskirts of Lover's Lake and sees this girl just absolutely whaling about, splashing in the water and dancing, just full of life and glee (she just dumped Jason). She's yelling with such giddy delight, like she doesn't care about what anyone thinks and is just happy to be. And Jonathan doesn't think he's ever seen anyone with such unrestrained joy before. He doesn't even really think about it, his camera is just up and snapping pictures. (He gets a really good one of Chrissy with her arms outstretched, head tilted up to the sky with a wide smile on her face; splashes of water dancing up around her.) After a couple shots he realizes it's...maybe a little weird that he's hiding in the woods taking pictures of her without her knowing. So he leaves his inadvertent hiding spot and goes up to her, trying not to startle her, because he doesn't want her to lose that un-self-conscious glee. It's only once he gets a little closer that it dawns on him that that's Chrissy Cunningham.
Meanwhile...Chrissy doesn't think she's ever been happier. She's just graduated. She's dumped Jason. She has a job lined up post-graduation and an apartment she's sharing with a friend so she doesn't have to live with her mom anymore, and life can't get much better than this, she thinks. She decides she wants to celebrate. And maybe it's silly, but she has fond memories of going to Lover's Lake with her dad as a kid. So she drives out there, music blasting on the boombox she brought with her, and she just starts dancing. She doesn't even want to swim, really. She's just splashing around in the water like a giddy little kid and nothing's ever felt more perfect. She doesn't hear the person approaching at first, she's so caught up in her own little world. But then someone clears their throat off on the shore, and somehow she doesn't even startle. She turns around to see this awkward stringbean of a man with a camera around his neck waving awkwardly at her. She thinks she recognizes him from school, but she can't place his name at first.
"Hey, I, um...sorry to bother you, just...uh, I saw you dancing and I maybe, um, took a couple pictures? I can totally delete them if you want! I didn't really mean to take them, you just...you looked so happy."
send me a 🔀 and a pairing and I'll shuffle my music and make an au based on the song that comes up
#me: puts songs on shuffle for these two pasty-ass ST characters#spotify: here have a black spiritual covered by a black rock legend#me: yeah THANKS i guess??#anyway i actually love this idea though#like. number one non-canon jonathan ship for me now i think#photocheer#read writes

My beloved @yeats-infection tagged me 2-3 years ago: some songs that come up on shuffle!
“Let’s Stay Together,” Al Green. As perfect an opening 30 seconds as can exist. I really dig his jacket on the cover of this album
“Oh, It Is Love,” Hellogoodbye. The cataclysmic importance of Zombies! Aliens! Vampires! Dinosaurs! to my high school cultural experience cannot be overstressed. This song feels like shoes squelching on the floor of my first after-school job making smoothies and tastes like the white chocolate mochas WITH EXTRA CHOCOLATE FLAKES that the cute boy at Seattle’s Best made for me at Borders just down the sidewalk! Is it the tiny Italianate guitar? Is it Forrest Kline’s incredibly cute nasal vibrato? Is it the giddy drum explosion of the third act? Whatever else sweet aspects of scene royalty came together here… 🤌 Truly romance peaked in 2006
“Spice Up Your Life,” Spice Girls. The cataclysmic importance of Spice World to my elementary school cultural experience cannot be overstressed. Had a big crush on Posh inside the C on the front of this CD…
“She Plays Bass,” beabadoobee. Ah I heard this on one of yeatsie’s wonderful newsletters!!! How lovely indeed is the girl who plays bass <3
“Give Me the Cure,” Fugazi. LET’S GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!
“I Wish I Was the Moon Tonight,” Neko Case. I croon along to this alone in the car a lot
“Just One Kiss,” The Red Romance. This really got a hold on me during undergrad—I love a CLAPS ON THE BEAT song! It’s also on my mighty mighty That Chord playlist for the wah-wah-esque keyboard around 2:50. Kind of delectable ☠️💗🎀 vibes on this one…
“Hound Dog,” Big Mama Thorton. Her voice, her voice and that! Electric! Blues! Guitar!
“Rust,” Monolord. Also on That Chord for the frankly sickening gospel organ/heavy metal conglomeration at the end of the first minute. Heard this off the impeccably-named metallic fuckery playlist tits, clits, Satan, curated by the pinup artist who designed my motorcycle ring
“The Fallen,” Franz Ferdinand. The cataclysmic importance of You Could Ha[gunshot] I think about the word “slick” a lot as it’s used to describe some of the licky, jammy music I love from this era—The Strokes were forever “slick” in Spin. The Fratellis were kind of slick! The aughts’ Arctic Monkeys were a bit slick… I think FF firing on all cylinders as they so often are were the slickest! A perfect album.
I respectfully solicit @sullypants, @village-skeptic, @nimmieamee, and @gingertumericlemon

I said yes the cover can be better than the original because there’s literally cases where the original songwriter/singer literally said “ It’s their song now.” Like Johnny Cash’s cover of Trent Reznor’s “Hurt” and Whitney Huston’s cover of “I Will Always Love You “.
Oh absolutely, I think Smashing Pumpkins album version of "Landslide" is better than the album version by Fleetwood Mac, dixie chicks version is garbage, and I make sure to say Album version because well.
youtube
In 1997 they did this, whole concert album is perfection, that is a hill I am prepared to die on.
On the post I made the Elvis crack for a very specific reason.
Meet Big Mama Thorton, the first person to record Hound Dog.
youtube
She didn't write it though so the "stolen" bit is BS but people still will do what people do case could be made because it was specifically written FOR her, so it can get muddy.
I would actually say that both recordings of Hound Dog are equally good personally, but it's one that can trigger the discourse™.
If you didn't actually listen to the Hound Dog video up there I strongly suggest you do that, then look up "Sister Rosetta Tharpe" she gets a chunk of the credit for rock music existing, nobody gets all of it, but she gets more than many.

The essay in the book hints that Nina didn’t break through like Ella and Billie because she didn’t commit to a genre like they did, but I wonder if it had more to do with Billie and Ella’s performances of femininity versus Nina’s. And the misogynoir at the center of it all
FINALLY some NINA
#like I think nina is just being nina#but her whole thing i think#is more on par with sam cooke and big mama thorton and muddy waters#like. it’s more masc than ella & billie#which I LOVE btw#idk I think to — not only compare these bad bitches to each other —#and conclude that nina’s disparity in success until the late 60s is simply because of some genre schizophrenia seems disingenuous.#and did I just look up the cited critic and see that he is a white man? yes#anyway I’m sure there’s better ethnomusicology written on this
