Lagunitas Beast of Both Worlds Bi-Coastal IPA (Picked up at Total Wine). A 3 of 4. I appreciate the idea and this is a tasty beer, but it feels like it doesn't fully live up to what it bills -- this is still quite hazy in the body and still has quite a lot of West Coast hop notes. It's nice to see both styles represented, though, and doesn't feel discordant at all -- just a solid lighter hazy IPA with big mix of tropical fruit and citrus in the nose and body.

Sapporo-Stone Brewing extends an offer to Joel Pipman, as its VP of Brewing Operations
Press Release
ESCONDIDO, CA ... Sapporo-Stone Brewing announces the addition of Joel Pipman, VP Brewing Operations to oversee the company’s bi-coastal breweries. Pipman brings 19 years of brewery experience in the areas of brewing, packaging, quality assurance, utilities, business administration, engineering, maintenance and leadership.
Pipman will be based in Richmond, VA where Sapporo-Stone Brewing will be producing about half of its beers, shipping to the Eastern and Central U.S. and abroad. He will oversee operations at both bi-coastal breweries in the primary leadership role.
“Sapporo-Stone's quality culture enticed me to join this great team,” explained Joel Pipman, Sapporo-Stone Brewing’s incoming VP Brewing Operations. “I look forward to helping the team reach its goals and am excited to brew a lot of awesome beer together.”
Sapporo-Stone’s leadership team is designed to meet the unique needs of a large brewery producing the number one selling Asian beer brand in the U.S. and innovative craft offerings. Pipman will guide the team through ongoing growth and innovation, ensuring consistency across both breweries and meeting the exact specifications of Sapporo’s beers.
Pipman spent the last five years as Senior Brewmaster for Anheuser-Busch in Williamsburg, VA. Prior, he held roles in engineering, quality assurance, finance, and maintenance at Anheuser-Busch breweries in Newark, New Jersey and St. Louis, Missouri. Pipman holds a degree in Chemical Engineering from The Pennsylvania State University with a Master’s in Business Administration from Washington University in St. Louis. He earned his diploma in Brewing from the Institute of Brewing and Distilling and is Lean Six Sigma Black Belt Certified.
Both Sapporo-Stone breweries are currently undergoing major expansion as the company prepares to brew all Sapporo beers for the U.S. in addition to Stone Brewing offerings. The combined company anticipates brewing about 700,000 barrels in 2024, double the total production at Stone breweries prior to its 2022 acquisition by Sapporo U.S.A. Sapporo beers will begin flowing from Sapporo-Stone breweries in early 2024.
Sapporo is the oldest beer of Japan and the number one selling Asian beer brand in the U.S., growing 7.6% year-over-year and gaining share within the rapidly expanding import beer category. Stone Brewing is also gaining share within the crowded craft beer category, outpacing category trends by nearly 4 points.
Pipman joined Sapporo-Stone Brewing on October 23, 2023.

Uh oh, you've unleashed a whole infodump- /pos
Hokay, this got LONG, so Imma get through the intro and slap a break in here cuz there's a LOT. For no good reason. When I say I got plagued by this idea I really mean it grabbed me in a chokehold and shook me around like a ragdoll.
ANYWAYS:
It’s not exactly a human AU, but it humanoids everyone and uses a much more modern setting. Think “relatively normal modern earth” but then switch out the inhabitants for starfolk. It’s also not actually on earth - it still uses the constellation areas (loosley), but laid out across a country instead of cyclic branches.
The starfolk still retain most of the traits unique to them, but they’re shrunk or grown a bit to fit more consistent proportions, and are usually bi-pedal. E.g. Summum is smaller and walks upright, but still stands significantly taller than most, and retains the wings, tail, head, coloration, etc.
This also, very conveniently, means that Summum gets to keep his name. I’ll be using Eclipsed names for everyone else.
Here's our roster (which could definitely be added to):
Summum, Luca, and Worldless (here dubbed Aleph until I have a better name) are all seniors.
Quimera, Yin, Yang, and Ceren (Demon) are juniors.
Archi, Kleisme (Paladin), Teino, and Kavo are sophomores.
Edda, Aven, and Hasyut are freshmen.
Adaptation (Allagi) is a junior in high school.
The zones, going clockwise starting at West - yes the names are silly and basic, sue me (please don’t)
Rosemouth (Pronounced ROHZ-muth (/ˈroʊzˌmʌθ/ for IPA readers))
Arborville
Goldview
Lilac Moore
Bluewood
Mountain River
Emerald Terrace
Reflection Point
Our college here is Rosemouth College, a relatively small college with a collection of available degrees. Not necessarily a prestigious college, nor does it have the biggest range of possible degrees, but it’s affordable, the community and classes are solid, and there’s a lot of other local resources and vocational training that students can look into. Allagi's high school (so creatively named Rosemouth School) are in the same town, so Allagi is around.
So who’s from where, and what’s where like?
Both Allagi and Kleisme are locals. The Rosemouth surrounding area is fairly rural, and the city itself is pretty small. It’s got a the rural charm and a quaint feel, but with hints of some industrial architecture here and there.
Summum hails from Emerald Terrace, a major city that's about a two hour flight south of Rosemouth. (I am… shamelessly basing distances off of some approximate US analogs, and therefore also US conceptions of acceptable travel times.) It’s a beautiful city really, sprawling and with a great deal of maintained forest space and plant life still integrated into the city. Probably one of the best city experiences you could hope for. Low crime rate, friendly denizines, and somehow the cost of living isn’t absolutely ridiculous (all of the fantasy here has transferred to economic fantasy, lol). However, it’s also cushy enough living to earn Summum the title of “city boy.”
Edda and Aven come from Reflection Point, a coastal town that's more southwest of Rosemouth, and about an hour's flight out. It’s also got a fairly quaint feel to it, and the coastal and seafaring themes are a big deal. Aven quickly discovers how much he misses the smell of ocean water when they get into Rosemouth.
Quimera comes from Bluewood, over east, specifically from a small rural town where and everyone knows everyone. Hasyut also lived there for a bit before flying out for college, so she and Quimera know each other already when she enrolls. It's a 3 to 4 hour flight most of the time, but unfortunately there’s often delays for turbulence.
Yin, Yang, and Archi, (and Hasyut originally) all live in Mountain River, a much colder locale down towards the southeast. Their flights take closer to 2 hours, and they are all acclimated to cold weather. Rosemouth is… a touch warm for them during the hot seasons.
Then from Arborville, we get Kavo and Teino. They can get to Rosemouth in about 3 hours driving, and flying isn’t usually worth the price at that point. Plus, the drive is nice. Arborville is more suburban, situated near the outskirts of Goldview City. It’s got a number of parks and a local zoo that everyone adores.
Ceren hails from Goldview, about 4 hours driving out from Rosemouth (and thus an hour-ish up from Arborville). It's a bigger metropolis than Emerald Terrace, but everything is also much more closely packed and industrial. Not as nice of a living area, but it has some upsides.
Lastly, Luca and Aleph are both international students from… *waves vaguely across the assumed ocean.*
Story notes:
Aleph was at Rosemouth College up until near the end of junior year, at which point he got himself expelled after starting some… er, drama with Summum, and by extension, the other transcended crew (not that they’re transcended here, but hey).
So senior year there's no Aleph. He's finishing off at a different college somewhere else. Summum could not be more relieved. Luca is entirely unsurprised that he got kicked out.
Summum wants to go into law school after college, so he’s majoring in philosophy, and also squishing a political science class in there, plus the other various required classes.
Archi is majoring in biology, since she wants to go into medical school.
Both Kleisme and Hasyut are in computer science.
Haven’t really figured out who else is doing what. I imagine there’s a few someones in engineering and chemistry classes, and at least one person focusing arts (Yang, maybe?)
When Edda and Aven come in, they quickly find themselves friends in the transcended crew. However, they also have absolutely no context for the Aleph drama, so they sorta… keep learning things about that as they go, and get increasingly worried from time to time.
Side note, the Christmas of Summum’s senior year is a very special one for them all, because their Christmas junior year was largely disrupted by the beginnings of said drama. It made for a restless holiday season for Summum especially, and they’re all going to cherish getting to make up for it now.
I… haven’t quite figured out what this mysterious drama entails, but it’s gonna land solidly in “Aleph is actually a terrible person and Summum is marginally traumatized.”
I've been plagued by a thought and now I'm antagonizing you with it too:
Worldless, but College AU
Please pardon the machinations of my sleep-deprived, college-waterlogged brain-
YES
PLEASE TELL ME MORE BECAUSE I AM INTRIGUED-

Meet the Brewery Class of 2017, Bierwax and The Sampler open, and more NYC beer news
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/cda91c9b3d93d0a2f913e57fbfd86e14/tumblr_inline_p23qx5uTl21qzwy03_540.jpg)
Pomp and Circumstance
The numbers are in for 2017. Last year, nine breweries opened in the five boroughs, bringing the total in the city to 35. That’s only one off the modern-era high of 10 in 2014. Now, let’s welcome the New York City Brewery Class of 2017...
Circa Brewing Co: Pizza and beer are the name of the game at this downtown Brooklyn brewpub that opened in July.
Death Avenue: The in-house brewery for this Mediterranean Restaurant just off the High Line debuted Fourth of July weekend. A separate taproom opened in the fall.
Fifth Hammer Brewing: Long Island City’s fifth brewery, with veteran brewer Chris Cuzme at the helm, opened to rave reviews in October.
Five Boroughs Brewing Co.: Lagers make up most of the core lineup of this booming Sunset Park brewery that debuted in August.
Island to Island Brewery: Inspired by Carribbean roots and all things fermentable, this Prospect Lefferts Gardens brewery opened this spring.
Kills Boro Brewing Company: Staten Island’s newest brewery opened its doors at Craft House over the summer, and their first two canned IPAs got snapped up fast last month.
Lineup Brewing: Kat Martinez’s beers are already making waves on New York’s beer scene after launching back in February. The I-80 Bi-Coastal IPA on tap and around town now.
Randolph Beer DUMBO: The third outpost of this beer bar chain opened in October with a hefty in-house brewery and a pour-your-own-beer system for those who like ultimate control.
Wartega Brewing: Debuting their beers in January at the Industry City Distillery is this one-barrel-at-a-time brewery from the minds of Merlin Ward and Mimi Ortega (hence the name).
Bierwax opens, The Sampler returns
Two new spots for the Brew York Beer Map opened in the past couple weeks. Bierwax, a long-awaited passion project by friend of Brew York Chris Maestro soft-opened over the holidays. The beer-and-music concept in Prospect Heights features 12 rotating taps with a local focus, plus more vinyl than you could possibly imagine (but please, no requests).
In Bushwick, The Sampler is back open on Starr Street under new management, with a focus that’s more bar-centric than retail-centric, though growler fills and bottle and can sales are still available, along with 20 rotating draft lines and art to be on display.
This Weekend’s Beer Releases
If you can bear the cold, here’s a roundup of who’s releasing new beers this weekend in NYC:
Kings County Brewers Collective has two new double dry hopped Double IPAs in cans this Saturday in their taproom starting at noon: DDH Short Term Goals and DDH Tiger Thunder. Both are $18/4-pk.
Singlecut Beersmiths released two new cans this week, which as of press time are still available at their taproom (thanks, Bomb Cyclone!): Cold Fire DDH Imperial IPA and In and Around The Lake 3XDH Imperial IPA. Get ‘em while they’re cold... which should be pretty easy this weekend.
Gun Hill also released two new cans this week: E Pluribus Lupulin VI, a Double IPA hopped with Galaxy, Waimea, and Eukanot, and Dessert Storm, a S’mores-inspired pastry stout brewed in collaboration with Greenport Harbor.
Does Other Half have a can release this weekend? Of course they do! For the first Saturday can drop of 2018, they’re dropping DDH Cream of Broccoli Imperial Oat Cream IPA, DDH Cabbage Imperial IPA, DDH Stacks on Stacks Imperial IPA and DDH Mylar Daydream Imperial Oat Cream IPA (all $20/4-pk). Sales get underway at 10am Saturday at their Smith Street warehouse, down the block from the brewery.

Sapporo-Stone Brewing provides updates on their first phase of expansion.
Press Release
ESCONDIDO, CA ... Two years following the announcement of its acquisition by Sapporo U.S.A., San Diego-based Sapporo-Stone Brewing, unveils the near completion of phase one of its expansion project at its Escondido brewery. The $20 million investment in the Escondido, CA facility is one of two significant investments for growth with $40 million invested in the company’s Richmond, VA operation. These investments will result in the doubling of the company’s capacity to about 700,000 barrels a year across its bi-coastal breweries. The brewing of Sapporo beers in Escondido, CA and Richmond, VA is now underway.
Stone Brewing, Southern California’s largest craft brewery was acquired by Sapporo U.S.A. in 2022. The goal was to transition from an importer to a U.S. brewer, ultimately brewing, selling, and marketing all of Sapporo’s beers for the U.S. market locally. Richmond’s expansion will be unveiled this fall. By late summer, all production of Sapporo beers will have moved from Canada and Asia to the U.S.
Sapporo-Stone Brewing is now a combined team of nearly 850 employees, about 600 of whom are based in San Diego County. In support of its expansion project, the company added 125 jobs locally and another 75 outside of San Diego County. More than 150 team members have been promoted or moved into new or expanded roles since the acquisition.
“Operationally, this acquisition looks a lot like a merger,” stated Zach Keeling, Sapporo-Stone Brewing Interim CEO. “Our two companies are now fully integrated – Innovating, brewing, selling, marketing, and operating as a single, combined business. The Sapporo and Stone Brewing brands will maintain their individual identities, but we are Sapporo-Stone in name, operations, and culture.”
The Escondido expansion project includes additional tanks and packaging lines to increase capacity and efficiency. On the West Coast Sapporo-Stone now operates out of its two Escondido brewing and packaging buildings and a distribution warehouse with offices also in Escondido. It occupies additional warehouse space in San Marcos, CA and Downey, CA. The company operates two Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens and five Stone Brewing Tap Rooms. On the East Coast, Sapporo-Stone operates another brewery, an off-site warehouse, and a Stone Brewing Tap Room all in Richmond, VA.
Now the nation’s 12th largest brewery by volume* Sapporo-Stone Brewing aims for a top 10 ranking. Finding growth in the beer market is challenging as craft consolidates and alcohol drinkers explore countless new innovations, but Sapporo-Stone’s craft-meets-import portfolio sets the company apart. In both the Import and Craft categories, Sapporo and Stone are gaining share over the last year. Sapporo is the number one selling Asian beer brand in the U.S., with sales up +13.1%, nearly double the growth of the Import category, +6.7%.** Most of this growth is attributed to its flagship Sapporo Premium. Stone’s best sellers include the Stone Delicious IPA family of beers, Stone IPA and Stone Buenaveza Salt & Lime Lager. These Stone core brands are also growing, up 13.2%.***
At its Escondido Open House event on May 21, 2024, Hiro Kitaoka, Sapporo-Stone Brewing Chairman stated, “Stone Brewing is among the world’s most recognizable and celebrated craft breweries. We admire the team’s innovative spirit, passion, and world-class brewing expertise. We are proud to continue the legacy of Stone and honored to have this full team’s commitment to the Sapporo brand. We are stronger together, and proud to be a growing San Diego business.”
Stone Brewing was among San Diego’s pioneering craft brewers and is credited for bringing national and international attention to San Diego as a thriving craft beer city. In its early years, the team fostered collaboration through the formation of Stone Distributing Company to distribute small craft brands. It curated countless invitational beer festivals, served guest beers on tap, and played a founding role in the San Diego Brewers Guild. Stone Brewing continues to host local craft beer events and festivals and to offer creative craft innovations like its Stone One Batch Dispatch beers alongside its year-round beers available nationwide and in 50+ countries. Locally-brewed Sapporo beers can be enjoyed and purchased at all Stone Brewing locations.
