Man, Palladium RPGs exhaust me. In a good way, but still, exhausting. This is the first edition of Beyond the Supernatural (1987). Players take various sorts of psychics who then investigate supernatural mysteries that can fall anywhere on the horror spectrum, from farcical to gruesome.

As with most Palladium games, there are at least two truckloads of rules too many. The main innovation here is Potential Psychic Energy (PPE) which is how Psychic Character Classes (PCCs — it wouldn’t be Palladium without lots of abbreviations) do their thing. It’s basically a point system for any sort of mental powers or magic and replaces the D&D-derived spells-per-day style systems that were in TMNT, Palladium Fantasy and other games up to this point. PPE and the underlying psychic/magic systems would become an important component of Rifts. A fun section of source material tackles Ley lines and sites of power that will also be important for that later game (and is, along with the bestiary, which includes a lot of unusual monsters from non-European traditions, is the most fun section of the book). I tend to think Palladium games are too complicated for me, and I definitely think this one is too much for horror (and too combat oriented). YMMV of course.

So much amazing artwork, though. A cover by Richard Corben? Hell yea! Kevin Long was still pumping out illustrations for Palladium at this point, but this is one of the rare times I think he’s out-shined — Steve Bissette contributes a ton of work to this book, and it is all grimy and shadowy and full of toothy danger. It’s hard to compete with a master.

"Supernatural crime-horror" is one of my favourite weirdly specific horror subgenres, like the exorcist iii, the crow, malignant, longlegs. Theyre all so iconic. You've got the thrills of a detective movie, the mystique of a supernatural movie, and the scares of a horror movie. Its literally the perfect formula.

hi not to complain about a poorly written game from a decade ago, but can we please talk about how egregious it is setting the dinner chapter directly after separation in beyond: two souls? i have gripes about how poorly this game utilizes it’s non-linear narrative in a lot of places, but this stands out as the worst offender to me while replaying it. directly after we reveal Ryan (already the face of the CIA that we know will later go on to hunt Jodie down and who “used her”) as also the man who tears Jodie away from the only home/family she’s really had, we jump directly into. them in a romantic relationship.

Ryan is not just some guy Jodie could have as a love interest. He represents a very negative, very exploitative force in her life. Hell, going linearly, you have Jodie yelling at him not to touch her in The Embassy straight into the hijinks of The Dinner. It’s jarring and not in a meaningful way. Not purposefully, at least. Like, Aiden getting Ryan to leave the apartment during The dinner is one of the requirements for the “be evil whenever you can” achievement, right next to literally trying to kill children. There’s so much dissonance between what we’re told (Jodie and Ryan’s relationship is Normal And Fun And Sexy, Actually) and what we’re shown (Ryan is the face of the agency that takes and uses and hounds Jodie all game, and no relationship they could possibly have would ever be on equal footing.)

I really think, and bear with me because I know this chapter has Issues™️ too, that The Dinner would have benefitted greatly from being directly after Like Other Girls and taking place before we learn just how the CIA got ahold of Jodie in Separation. The two chapters obviously tie-in together with the consequences of the events of Like Other Girls falling directly on Jodie’s relationship with Ryan in The Dinner, while also having a thematic tie in Jodie desperately wanting to pretend, if only for a night, that she can be a normal person with normal relationships. It would also have led to a stomach-sinking moment in Separation where Jodie meets Ryan for the first time chronologically and you realize just how connected that relationship is to Jodie’s exploitation by the CIA. If you got Aiden to ruin their chances, then you might feel a little better about that. If you let them get together, you’re going to feel uncomfortable, and you should! (And if Like Other Girls prevented that outcome, again, poorly handled in-game, but at least it would come full circle just how violating this has been for Jodie. I cannot emphasize enough how much Jodie is seventeen in Separation, and the first line Ryan says to her (not about her. to her.) is for her to quit her adolescent whining and pack up to get drafted.)

(I also think that if the game was half as good as its potential, we wouldn’t have gotten some random SWAT guy hunting Jodie down. We would have gotten Ryan doing it. I think that would have provided a much needed layer to their relationship that’s hinted at at the end of Separation and The Mission. Ryan has manipulated her, but at the end of the day, Jodie & Aiden can fuck him and anyone else up that tries to harm her.)

i have been thinking about these two exchanges since reading them for the first time. WHAT DID THEY MEAN BY THIS!!! i am absolutely unceasingly intrigued by eustace’s stumble there and what it could mean! my current leading thoughts which almost definitely don’t account for everything (eustace going from ‘in the [morning?]’ to ‘later’ is its own fun mystery to solve) are that either eustace is lying about needing to check for the book For Whatever Reason, OR that the superior knows things about the library that eustace doesn’t. 

i am leaning towards the latter interpretation because i think that has some capital R Ramifications! at this point (one chapter in, mind you, so who knows what is yet to be revealed) i’m feeling positive that eustace and the superior are In Cahoots in a similar way as hedwig and the superior. i think that both of them having access to the relic room is notable and i think that in this context eustace telling hedwig not to snoop around the library while the superior knows things eustace doesn’t is soooo loaded. god i want to know whats going on there. eustace asserting boundaries to hedwig that she can not assert to the superior, the superior playing moves ahead, the superior invading eustace’s life and fragile peace the way she has invaded hedwig’s, catherine’s place in the library and how it factors into this, etc etc...

i also think that this is really worth noting what with medea showing up on hedwig’s bed. iirc a fair bit of catherine’s things ended up with eustace, and this copy of medea, if it was truly meant for hedwig (which i remember being suspicious of? it is very convenient that it showed up on her bed and she accepted it easily enough in her kind of desperate and romantic way that i am not quite taking it as fact), would reveal a connection between catherine and the alleged Only Woman Who Had No Connection To The Murder Victim that would shoot even more holes in the superior’s plan to have the single least qualified woman in the world to investigate a murder investigate a murder. i think that eustace likely had the means to get this play to hedwig, or to know where this play is in the library and be able to access it, and that it could be...hm. HM

i am puzzling this out as i go so sorry if its incoherent (big surprise) but i think that eustace being in cahoots with the superior makes her attempts to chase hedwig away very, very interesting. it feels like a warning and a threat at the same time. i think there’s a case you could make (a faulty case, almost definitely, but a case) that if eustace and the superior are collaborators, they could be involved in catherine’s murder, and they could be aware of hedwig’s connection to her, aware that the anchoress could have heard things from catherine’s pursuit of this Unnamed Conspiracy that she should not know, and could be acting to shut her up now? question mark? in the sense that eustace is being used as a weapon by the superior? i don’t think they murdered catherine (her having two different wounds stands out to me), but i think they could have definitely found her body and then arranged it in the striking way she was found. its like...its like what eustace was doing with the armor. creating an atmosphere to warn people off. though eustace as the superior’s tool warning hedwig (in a very similar situation. theoretically. if i am not fishing in the air) carries a feeling of “do not end up like me�� that i think is cool

which is kind of the reason behind a lot of this, because only one chapter in i EXTREMELY doubt there’s even enough information to Solve the murder (we still don’t know SOOOOO much) but there is already enough being set up that i think this is perhaps not entirely an ungrounded thought process. maybe. perhaps. i just think that the idea of eustace being in hedwig’s situation is cool and i also think that someone being made to tamper with their friend’s murder scene to send a message against everything they wish because someone else has leverage on them is just. i think as a concept that it is compelling. to ME

also i’m not throwing my weight behind any of this because i am very foolish and i do not trust my ability to read mysteries all that much but i’m definitely having fun!!
