Beyond the Best 3: Shoujo Manga

Welcome back to <Beyond the Best> where I post lesser known manga that isn't mind-blowing but still good reads! I love shoujo, so I end up reading a lot. So it's shoujo (aka "young girl" aka romance/drama) time~ (>∀<☆)

In the Clear Moonlit Dusk

9/10, ongoing manga about a handsome boy-ish girl who is known as the "school prince" and her love life. It's a very cute first love manga, and the art is very cute. The art and romance style kind of gives off <A Sign of Affection> vibes (as in their relationship is similar, but the character types are different). If you haven't read or watched <A Sign of Affection> (manga review link), it's a very cute and wholesome romance story.

The main reason why I didn't post an individual review on this (since 9/10 review is pretty high) is because there aren't many chapters out. I feel like I can't make a good judge on it overall, so I put it here.

Studio Cabana

8/10, ongoing manga about a quiet, "dark and mysterious" boy who is the lead singer for a band and a very cute, wholesome, studious girl. This story has a "girl likes the guy but the guy doesn't realize" story. I like how the romance unfolds slowly. Many themes about learning about love, friendship, and mental health. Warning: There are suggestive scenes aka slight nudity. There is also relationship toxicity.

Perfect World

7.5/10, finished manga about a girl running into her high school first love as working adults. The girl, now an adult, is shocked to learn that her first love is now in a wheelchair, but her forgotten feelings begin to bloom again. Cute story with its highs and lows as the couple navigate their relationship. I like the themes of the challenges and relationships of disabled and non-disabled people. [Edit: I finished this manga and changed my review score from an 8/10 to a 7.5/10. There are better shoujo manga than this, but I still thought it was a unique story.]

That's it! There are a lot more, but out of all the ones I'm reading right now, these would be the series I want to review and recommend most. Maybe in the future, I can do a part 2 with more ( ´ ꒳ ` )

Thinking a very normal amount about Tim being joker junior.

Thinking about Jason dying and Tim becoming robin out of necessity.

Thinking about Bruce not noticing Tim has been kidnapped because surely, surely his parents would file a report. Surely Tim must have been dragged into going on a trip with them and just didn’t mention it.

Thinking of Bruce not questioning things correctly because he is too busy grieving the previous robin.

Thinking of Bruce just thinking Joker Junior is a random kid.

Thinking of Barbra being the one to notice instead.

Thinking of Barbra consoling Tim after he kills the Joker.

Thinking of her taking Tim and letting him heal in the Drake estate.

Thinking of a file Bruce Wayne makes called Joker junior, one that Tim never looks at, that talks about a kid who killed the Joker and has been missing ever since.

Thinking of, months later, when robin returns to Bruce’s side, it just so happens to coincide with the return of Jack and Janet.

Thinking of Tim thinking Barbra must have told Bruce, but he just never came to see him. And that’s fine, because it isn’t as if they are family, Tim is just here to make sure Bats doesn’t go off the deep end again.

Thinking of Barbra not telling Bruce, because surely he already knows, he’s the world’s greatest detective. Plus she isn’t one to talk about other people’s trauma when they aren’t around.

Thinking of Tim hiding his laughter, because Batman would never let him keep patrolling if he knew he was still having fits.

Thinking of Dick not being there most of the time, and when he is, he mostly spends it arguing with Bruce.

Thinking of Tim knowing that Dick must know because he hears them fighting about the joker being dead once, although he did leave pretty soon after when he feels the laughter bubbling up in his throat.

Thinking of Jason coming back, attacking him at the titains tower, and telling him that he’s read all his files and knows everything about Tim. Obviously Tim takes this to mean he knows that Tim killed the joker as JJ. Because why wouldn’t that be in his file.

Thinking of Jason not having time to question when the little Robin who replaced him starts manically laughing once he sees him, because as soon as he hears the familiar laugh the green takes over completely.

Thinking of Tim finally feeling in control of himself, but then worst year ever happens. His parents are dead, Bruce is lost in the time stream, all his friends are dead, Robin is stolen from him, and everyone thinks he is crazy. He starts to relapse.

Thinking of Tim actually going a little bit crazy after that, trying to clone Bart and Kon, joining the league of assassins, doing all those crazy things he did during worst year ever.

Thinking of Cass learning after saving Tim from the daughter of Acheron. There isn’t much he can do but explain after she witnesses one of his fits.

Thinking about years later, when everyone has relationships more akin to Batman: Wayne family adventures, Tim still feels a little out of the group.

Thinking of everyone getting mad when he talks about the Joker, especially if it’s in front of Jason.

Thinking of Tim going silent or making himself scarce everytime the Joker is mentioned.

Thinking of a Tim who finds an excuse not to go out when Harley Quinn is.

Thinking of a Tim who hasn’t had an episode in years.

Thinking of a Tim who watches Jason get all this support for his trauma, while he doesn’t.

Thinking of him going to Barbra or Cass anytime he has a set back because they are the only ones who seem to care.

Thinking of a Wayne family who doesn’t know.

Thinking of a Tim who Knows they Know, but they just don’t care.

Beyond the Best 1: Manga that's worth it

I originally styled my blog to only post what I consider top-tier content, but I've been sitting and watching so much mid-tier content. I decided to do something about it, so here I am making a change ٩(◕‿◕｡)۶

Kill the Villainess

7/10, finished manhwa. I'm totally addicted to historical, isekai manga, so I enjoyed the drama and the story that came along with <Kill the Villainess>. The storyline is a modern girl wakes up one morning as the villain of her favorite novel and has to find a way to go back to modern day. Finished reading this manga & enjoyed it, even though it was boring here and there.

Hirayasumi

8/10, on-going manga about the life of an unemployed 29-year old guy who quit his dreams of becoming an actor for a "slow life". His sister moves in with him in the city & their relationship grows. Cute, cozy art & I like the themes of slowing down but still enjoying the simple things in life. All caught-up as of now. Because the manga is so easy-going, I don't see it peaking further than it is now.

To Your Eternity

8/10, on-going manga about a mysterious immortal being that got sent to Earth and has been adapting and imitating everything and everyone to live among people ever since. I haven't been back into classic shonen you know, stuff with fighting and powers for a while. This was a good manga to get back into shonen. Still reading this one, and so far, it's enjoyable. Good pace & good balance of fighting, monsters, and emotional bits.

I've seen a lot of different takes on Fear Toxin/other fear causing stuff (Yellow Lanterns Ring or something)(later just called Fear Toxin cause I'm lazy) but here is another one.

Danny seems like he isn't affected by Fear Toxin because his biggest fear is that his accident changed him so much he is no longer human, he can no longer truly experience human things.

So when he gets lungful of fear Toxin, he feels normal. He was antsy before, because c'mon, it's a rogue attack but it's not worse. Or so he thought. Because the anxiety lingers. Not enough to register as abnormal just this slight hypervigilance that makes you see things about yourself and your surroundings that you'd never realize otherwise. He'd realize he doesn't blink as often. He'd realize that if he doesn't consciously focus, he sometimes seems to not touch the ground. Forgets to breathe. He can't feel his own pulse at time. He'd realize people will miss him when he's walking down the street as if he was invisible (people just don't care about everyone they pass by). When he'd look straight into his reflection, he'd look slightly to the left. Not enough to actually name anything that was wrong but just stretched enough to fall on the wrong side of the uncanny valley. If he just caught his reflection in the peripheral vision, it'd be vaguely shadowy creature with glowing green eyes and white smoke instead of hair. Overall he'd be just wrong enough to be distinctly not human.

For everyone else, he'd be just a dude. Literally couldn't find more normal dude than this dude. Will pass as absolutely normal human unless someone is specifically looking for ecto-ghost stuff. Even most magic users wouldn't clock him at the glance

Tldr: Fear Toxin makes Danny perceive himself as some sort of eldritch horror but not enough to make him believe he'd actually be affected, while from outside perspective he's Just A Dude™

I'm sure this has been talked about plenty but I'm still awestruck at how well Frieren handles Himmel and Frieren's relationship. I have never seen the 'character haunts the narrative' story beat done to such effectiveness.

Frieren's regret is that she didn't know Himmel before he was gone- but he exists in everything Frieren does without her fully realizing it. Frieren is a fundamentally different person and we *know* it is mostly thanks to Himmel's influence. The constant flashbacks, the way in which Frieren's logic and everyday routines have been altered by his memory. She collect spells because he and the others complimented the mundane, random spells she had found. The way that instead of her master, Himmel is the person who the monsters choose to immitate.

The flashbacks too, are so so potent in characterizing who Himmel was- not only in regards to Frieren, but in regards to Himmel as the hero. The person who lead his group to kill the demon king. The person who did everything in his power to help those around him. The person who was so clearly in love with Frieren but understood intimately that Frieren would not love him in the same regard and even worse, would be walking a very long and lonely path.

Hell, it's at the start of every chapter, in which time is only kept by the years before and after Himmel's death.

It all comes back to him, in the end
