Medic x reader headcannons????
MINE MINE MINE MINE — mod medic
READER X MEDIC
if you were looking for a extremely romantic and sappy lover, than you are in the WRONG CATEGORY BUDDY, BECAUSE WOOO HES IS NOT.
he does try, really, but in a very unorthodox fashion. like yeah it has a romantic intention when he gave you a beating heart of the enemy soldier saying it’s for you, but you did react quite badly to it.
definitely had to be coached on how to be Normal in a relationship because otherwise he would NOT get it. turns out!! people don’t like organs and guts and murder like he does. it’s just a him thing.
he does delve deeper into your interests but more importantly— your health! dating an ex-doctor has its benefits! he still remember going to medical school and residency so he can still (illegally) perform on you. of course, you deny this advance, assuming you are sane my dear friends, but it’s the thought that counts.
slowly but surely the organs and medication are replaced with flowers and chocolates, it just took awhile to get there. he really is struggling but with a— albeit creepy— smile like that, how could you be mad at him?
his love language is most likely acts of service, which means he does the little things for you. said little things being anaesthesia but details details… you’re doing better off than his subjects teammates, so can you really complain?
and let’s be honest, being a mercenary pays well, you will NOT be going hungry bestie. with this advantage no matter who you are and what your stance is on paying for dinner, he is PAYING FOR DINNER, you cannot take that away from him. good luck trying
i think he uses you as an excuse to get out of things as well. new project coming up in 2fort? that’s too damn bad he actually needs to teach you the complicated anatomy of your central nervous system. it’s a very important thing, engineer! he has to waste.
also heavy hears about you so often he probably knows more about you than you do by the time he finally meets you face to face. i mean the whole shebang, full name, likes, dislikes, little fidgets, that thing you did last week to mess with medic, social security number…/j
he can’t help it, in his eyes you’re the greatest thing since sliced bread! maybe even the greatest thing since hemlock leaves in surgery prep!
…if you even knew what that meant when he said it to you.
all in all, god speed to you medic lovers because you will not get a DAY of rest with this man, he’s either working, causing something extraordinary or reeking havoc in teufort without many precautionary measures. we all saw expiration date. beware and tread carefully you fools (me included).

Musings on TTRPG Focus-Fire & Fighting Flanking
It's common for players to focus-fire in games, and that's fine. With 5 identical targets dealing damage, it's just efficient to dump all your single-target damage on the same target to reduce the incoming damage. But focus-fire isn't always ideal. As game designers, we always want to shake up the default strategy. There are several "counters" to focus fire. It's this game design riddle with so many solutions. Very fun to think about. But that is a whole whole whole other long talk. What I want to talk about today is flanking.
I can look at Chess, Go, Into the Breach, or some other turn-based, grid-dependent tactics game, and notice that they… don't have flanking? Well, they don't have mechanically codified benefits to flanking. But flanking still has tactical benefits. They're simply not spelled out in the rules. Flanking could give access to unexpected points of attack, enable surrounding & cornering, or access to more valuable targets. (That said, the center is usually the most advantageous spot in these games.)
Coming to tabletop, where Pathfinder 1e, DnD 5e, and Pathfinder 2e all have a numerical bonus to flanking. And I didn't notice it immediately, but the flanking bonuses reinforced focus fire! "Why would I even look at another target when I have a +2 bonus against the one my friend just ran up to?" Hitting together is hitting better! When you're surrounded in one of these games, you're pretty fucked already, and the flanking bonuses hammer this point home.
Following those thoughts, I pondered how, as a game designer, I could reduce flanking and focus-fire behaviour in these games. And this train of thought is funny.
All-around vision is possibly the most boring option as it simply excludes the behaviour. Sometimes, excluding a behaviour is acceptable. It can put grappling and tripping higher up on the priority list.
Run. Necessarily, it costs more to set up a flank than it does to avoid it (2 attackers have to move in to create one, while one creature has to move away to avoid one). Unfortunately, running away is finicky in practice. Attacks of opportunity are ubiquitous in these systems. Many a time, breaking a flank may be more expensive than setting one up in these games. Coagulation.
Fly, swim, hide, blind, slow, be far away, be up a ladder, or be across a pit of lava. Hard to access is hard to flank.
Buddy up! Interestingly, four vanilla defenders in a square are impossible to flank for vanilla (5-foot reach) melee attackers. Joining a trio or pair adjacent to each other also reduces flanking opportunities. The fortunate (unfortunate) reality is that such groups are gonna get blasted by AoE's. So there's this poetic tug of war between avoiding focus fire by staying together and avoiding AoE (and possibly accessing flanking yourself) by spreading apart.
Walls. A cornered creature is an unflankable creature! Quite counterintuitive. The average game would teach you that you don't want your back against the wall. But barriers are as good as fellow creatures for avoiding flanking. A pair of creatures against a wall is impossible to flank for vanilla attackers. And in a game where running away isn't much of an option, pressing yourself against a wall becomes much more of one. Pits and other hazards may work similarly, but beware the shove.
Get bigger! Wait, that means more spaces for creatures to flank you? In practice, though, attackers usually come from one direction. And the bigger you are, the more it costs to move around you! If you count diagonals differently, attackers may have to decide between the risk of tumbling through your space or the cost of moving around it. If you're thick enough to cover the hallway, it can be incredibly hard to flank you. In systems with increasing reach and attacks of opportunity, your size advantage makes it even trickier to navigate a flank.
Punish them! Getting back into the domain of special abilities now. Abilities such as Whirlwind Attack, Quick Reversal, Detonate, and on-death effects can punish flankers. Almost every boss should have an aura or reaction. Big note on using punishment: players will only avoid the behaviour you want to punish if they're aware of the punishment. On-death effects disincentivize focus fire on its own.
Change the priorities. Enter Crane Stance, raise your shield, cast Mirror Image, or exit rage. Have an ally appear in the enemy backline, poison the wizard, have an ally enter rage, or have an ally steal the McGuffin. Anything change that makes one a less attractive target, or makes another a higher priority problem can incentivize attackers moving to break or change focus.
Overall, there are a lot of implicit strategies against flanking. The recipes for chaos… Anyway, that's all I have for tonight. Thanks for reading this brain vomit 👍👍👍

Yo, Lancerblr
Figured I'd toss a few of these your way, grab some feedback. Haven't actually had a chance to play and stress test 'em yet, so I've got no clue how they'd fare in a combat situation, or if any of them are any good, really. Just threw together what I felt'd be neat in concept.
Even if this only gets one or two notes, I'm fine with that. Just felt like sharin'.
Personally, my favorite's split between Carrion Courier and Fog.
Beware, there are a LOT of words beneath the thing. Like, a-lot-a-lot-a-lot.
Here's Jane Doe, callsign Misnomer, with her mech Fog. She's a favorite, if you couldn't tell. Wanted for knowing a helluva lot more than she should and stealing a truly remarkable amount of prototype tech.
Mech Note:
"It's in the clouds! It's in the goddamn clouds!"
"Bank right, bank right, fuckfuckfuck FUCK-"
"I can't see, it's screaming, why is it so loud-"
"Sensors dead, I'm falling, shit, can't pull up!"
"Come into my parlor, said the crow to the spider to the fly."

And here we have Jane's former co-worker/war-buddy/mortal-enemy, John Blackacre, piloting the Carrion Courier. Spider-cowboy-mech. All the auxiliaries, all the close range brawl.
Mech Note:
"Okay, he's reloading, we can-"

"... Wait for it."

"Oh, christ."

Mech Note:
Exerpt from training exercise no.55638, JUN-30, 0537, begin play::>>
"... Hey, where'd squad five go?"
The sergeant answers with another question. "Y'see that big red circle that just popped up on your map reticle, private?"
"...Yessir."
The old Tortuga's head nods and extends a hand, holding up five fingers, slowly putting them down one after the other.
On the final finger, thunder splits the skies in the distance, once, twice, thrice, and then with a final sundering THOOM, the circle disappears, along with the markers within it denoting the remains of squad 8.
"Oh."
The older mech crosses its arms. "Yes, private. Oh."
Out of the corner of his eye, his face lights up red, and he feels the color drain from it.
"We're in the circle, sergeant."
The sergeant nods, again. "Correct, private. Now, what we do in this situation?"
He doesn't even wait for the order. The circle was very, very, very big, and his Saladin's legs weren't the fastest.

This is Cal Dera, callsign Crepescule. Nothing about her is reminiscent of faint rays of sunlight, more akin to its boiling surface. She specializes in punching straight through the frontline and making herself a very large fucking problem for everybody involved behind it. Walk into her zone? Melt. Attempt to go around or leave it? Get shotgunned to death.
Mech Note:
The 'tech stares. "What the fuck."
His co-shift nods. "Yeah, that tends to be what people say when they see her for the first time."
"I can feel the fucking heat from here, and we're behind triple reinforced walls in a vacuum. It's not even on yet?"
The co-shift shakes his head. "Nope. Reactor's not even burning yet."
"How the hell does this thing work near civilian centers?"
The co-shift paused in his preparations before eventually offering two words. "It doesn't."
He felt his mouth dry. "Ah."

Ciao, all. Let me know if any of these sound feasible, if you want.

A few Pokemon I think my characters would have (a lot probably misspelled)
Dusk - Absol (emo and tries to help but is called a disaster bringer), Mobostiff/Houdoom/Mightyena/preevos (scary dogs, leaning to mobostiff because it can be sweet), Skarmory (sharp, cool, armored bird), Mimikyu (labeled as scary, yet just wants kindness)
Domino - Empoleon (don’t have a reason for this…), Duklet (domino feels out of place like to ugly duckling), Delcatty/Skitty (pokemon that can sit around at home with him), Komala (Silver), Chatot/Kricketot (music)
Canis (for 2!Canis mainly, so feel free to evolve some of these for 1!Canis) - Rockruff (playful puppy), Muna (Canis fell asleep while being transported in time), Hisuian Zorua (“echos of the past” plus small and cute), Litten (Grim)
Kit - Fennikin/Nikit/Theivul (fox), Greavard (Kit is technically dead), Surperior (tries to hide behind a mask of superiority), Beautifly (pretty but not nice), Politoed (happy and makes rain, so Kalim) (Can’t think of much)
Toryn - Ludicolo (Water type plus being happy), Mantine (Mantine surf plus I just think a bunch of them going up to him because he’s nice is cute), Lapras (helping others plus surf), Pikachu (surfing pikachu), Grafaiai (art buddies), Rowlet (gift from Rook), Sharpedo/Carvana (gift from Tweels), Corsala (Toryn would be nice to see life and likes coral reefs), Beware (powerful, but wants cuddles), Meowscrada (Vil), Drampa (extremely sweet until you go after someone he protects), Eelektross (eel), Any of James’ Pokemon (he would be a pushover and be bit like James)
Dekker - Talonflame (falcon), Decidueye (bird plus hunter), Breloom (forest), Banette (abandonment), Grookey (forest), Octillery/Clobbopus (Azul)
Ruse - Ledyba/Ledian/Orbeetle (Ladybug), Type: Null/Silvally (abused horribly by a system, created into what they wanted), Pichu (too inexperienced that it doesn’t know how to handle stuff), Levanny (bug type that can help him learn sewing), elemental monkey preevos (see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil)
Trinity - Ceruledge (cool plus blades to used for bounty hunting), Mudsdale (stubborn and work focused), Krookodile (Sebek), Electryke (Sebek) (Can’t think of much)
Hello my other hyperfixation, how are you doing this fine evening?
Pokemon~

Negaduck In Let's Get Dangerous
Awe man so I had heard before that Bulba was supposed to get arrested and Negaduck would take over as the antagonist for part 2 of Let's Get Dangerous but I actually found some of the story boards today and man it was so much cooler! https://www.dianahuh.com/ducktales-storyboards
Tumblr media
I heard the main writing reason was it would be better to leave him as a roaming threat than do a disservice to his character by trying to squeeze him in but I disagree.
There were plenty of ways to write him in well. Hell, you can even make it a bit that he would get annoyed after there was too much Gos/DW/LP bonding that takes away his screen time.
I think it would just be fun for this character who is known by writers to take up way to much of an episode to finally have to deal with the fact he can't take up the whole episode. Would add some comedy in my opinion. (Even if it's just done through split second facial expressions due to time restraints).
I also think it didn't fit Bulba's or The Fearsome Four's characters. Why would Bulba use The Fearsome Four? I guess spite but that sprite fits Negaduck waaaaay more. The Fearsome Four also have absolutely zero reason to follow Bulba blindly like they do.
They just feel like zombies at certain points in the episode. Why would they follow this guy who just pulled them from their home?
Them following Negaduck makes much more sense. Yes he would have done the same thing as Bulba but he has the added bonus of being an evil Darkwing. That enough would probably entertain The Fearsome Four enough to stay. Negaduck is also known to threaten their lives when they step out of line, one threatening chainsaw and they're in.
Either way I just think it was a cool idea and would of been cool to keep. Part of me is just salty to never see him again because I absolutely adored the idea of Jim Starling.
(Also yes I heard about the Jim Cummings divorce shit and honestly I don't care, just recast him if you really needed to. Liquidator was already recast from his Beware of the BUDDY System appearance.)
Anyway though, it is very poetic how the show was canceled before Jim's story could be wrapped up yet again.

BEWARE THE IDES OF MARCH: a Newsletter
Reading: Vaesen: Nordic Horror Roleplaying, The Future by Naomi Alderman
Finished Reading: The Salt Grows Heavy by Cassandra Khaw
Podcast: Old Gods of Appalachia
Playing: Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition (PS3)
Making: DOOM levels and Zines
Writing: Project E
Word Count: 167578
TLDR: Looked at old work: liked it. Editing trenches: *cries in author.* Put trigger warnings on books, please. TTRPGs: I have a group now. Writing stories with others is sick as. TTRPG recommendations. Beetle Knight was funded fantastically.
This month I decided to take a short three-day break from the editing mines to go crack open an older WIP that I last looked at about a year ago. I couldn’t stop laughing through the first three chapters and legitimately couldn’t remember what I’d written scene to scene. I got to feel the intrigue as a character picked up a shoebox beneath their bed, and got angry at myself for not telling me what was in it! What a gloriously strange experience it was. I likely won’t spend too much time on this WIP in the coming months, but it’s good to know that when I’m done with my current big novel’s rounds of edits, I’ve got a project that I’m massively excited for waiting in the wings.
Speaking of my current big novel. Let’s look at that word count. Seems pretty similar to last month. I have done SO MUCH EDITING. I’ve realized that right now, my biggest concern is making sure to correct errors, cull old plot points, and generally tighten up dialogue. I feel that I’ve been too focused on culling words and maybe the more important thing is making sure this book fucking SHINES. Besides, while I shop this novel around, I can be happily chugging along on my other WIP, so no wuckas.
I am part of a writer’s group which meets once a month. It is quite a large group with many people who flow in and out. It is a beautiful group and an invaluable fount of knowledge. Every second month we have a discussion topic. This month was talking about the ethics of being an author and how much responsibility we have to our readers in regard to the topics we write about.
This led to talk of trigger warnings and the suggestion of books having them. (SPOILERS! I think they should have them) There were varying ideas on all sides of the spectrum, but there was one point made that has stuck in my head. Trigger warnings are just like nutrition labels. If you are allergic to nuts you need to know before you buy a product if it contains nuts, right? Trigger warnings are the same. You don’t want to be taking a big bite out of some delicious morsel and then suddenly you feel your throat closing up. Same same. You don’t want to put hours into a book, invest in the characters, only to suddenly have your exact trauma thrust into your eyeballs. You can’t unread it. If you have been honestly triggered before, you understand how it can be hard to stop that spin when it starts. And from an author's standpoint, you don’t want to turn off potential readers also. One scene that may seem insignificant to you, may be terrifying to another. Then they may never pick up your books again, for fear of said thing.
Speaking of this delightful group, near the end of the meeting a friend was talking to a brand new member about TTRPGs and I just so happened to be carrying CY_BORG with me! We chatted a bit and I enthusiastically suggested I should and would run a one-shot for them, their partner, my friend, and another writing buddy of mine. SO I’VE FINALLY GOT SOME TTRPG FRIENDS TO PLAY WITH! WOO! I am thrilled about the idea of introducing these fine folks to all the strange and interesting TTRPG systems I’ve picked up over the last year.
TTRPGs are such an invaluable resource for storytelling. With a few dice, some rules, and a setting, you and a few friends can end up creating an entire world and a compelling narrative together, even if no one in the group is a writer! Now… if you are writers… well then, something truly incredible can happen. I think authors often think of the writing process as a solitary pastime. Traditionally, it may be, but I think we undersell how satisfying and freeing collaborative storytelling can be. Hell, plenty of fantasy writers started their careers (See Raymond E. Feist) dictating and polishing up their D&D campaigns that they ran with their friends!
And in the spirit of collaboration, I want to recommend some small projects that need your help! I’ll be personally backing these later this month when I’ve secured my own funds.
Budgeon: A digestible mini adventure zine with a VERY old-school feel. The art is all first person a la Combat Heroes, but can be played as a party or solo! It even encourages you to draw your own maps, very similar to how you might have played Stonekeep on DOS. (Big nostalgia for myself) As of posting this, this project needs additional support right now! Go give them some love. The basic zine is only FIVE USD. (And THREE USD for digital~!)
Thirty Horrors: A bestiary designed to be used with Mothership 1E. Let’s be real people, that means it could likely be converted for just about any system with minimal pain. The art is shaping up to be suitably uncomfortable and this project blew the hell up! They’ve reached heaps of stretch goals and it still has half a month to go~
SPEAKING OF BLOWING UP. Holy hell Beetle Knight did well! It ended up earning 22,898 USD out of the required 3,500. WHAT A SHOWING! I absolutely adore seeing small weird projects become more successful than anyone could have imagined. Certainly, it was more than the original creator expected as that final total completely blew past their final stretch goal.
Support weird. Support indie.

Episode 2: “The Clue” / “A Companion To Owls”
Good Omens 2 Episode 2 liveblog! Beware spoilers!!
- Crowley is such a troll in this opening scene. I've come around on the beard/glasses combo. He looks like a wisecracking talking Disney goat.
---
- Jon Hamm’s impression of Buddy Holly is amazing. “Ah-hey, ah-hey-hey” yes give me those weird, grandpa-like hiccups.
---
- I can hear a fly during the zoom in on sleeping Crowley in the Bentley... does Beez have one spy in the bookshop and one on Crowley at all times?
- Hmmm, Shax tells Crowley right away about Heaven detecting the miracle. That could be evidence for my Beelzebub theory, I guess...? Beez wants Crowley kept informed about the danger, so that he’ll continue to keep Gabriel safe, but they get to keep up plausible deniability with Shax and the other demons that they’re only threatening Crowley.
- Poor Shax. Crowley’s bullying her.
- LOL are all the other demons afraid of driving at high speeds? (See: Hastur.) All he had to do to get rid of Shax was rev the engine.
---
- I like Maggie, but she’s a little clingy with Aziraphale. You’d think the euphoria of having 8 months of overdue rent forgiven would have lasted longer than 24 hours. On the other hand, her encyclopaedic knowledge of music history is really cool.
- Aziraphale conducting every time he sings Everyday is the cutest thing ever.
---
- Crowley orders Talisker! I assume John Finnemore insisted.
- OMG, Mr. Brown is holding a newspaper with THEE headline in it about the Nebraska woman who taught her duck to play the accordion.
- “Get humans wet, and staring into each others’ eyes. Vavoom.” I. I don’t think Crowley knows where babies come from either.
- THAT JANE AUSTEN LORE. AND CROWLEY DISAPPROVES?? SHE SOUNDS AWESOME
---
- Aziraphale is so hesitant when he says he doesn’t think God wants to kill Job’s children, and so utterly certain when he says he knows Crowley doesn’t want to. He already has more faith in Crowley’s mercy than God’s. 😭
- THE UNBELIEVABLE LEVELS OF SASS
- OK Ty Tennant is very funny
- Both the older kids treating Aziraphale like a waiter is hilarious actually, as is Jemima wanting to be a blue lizard and Crowley obliging
- I’ve been jossed a bunch already this season, but the biggest shock to my system by far is Crowley tempting Aziraphale into enjoying human food. I genuinely assumed Aziraphale has been nibbling on whatever was around to nibble on since he was first deployed on Earth. It took him a millennia and a half to try barbeque?? Poor deprived bb
- Whoever wrote that post about Aziraphale discovering honey and tearing into a beehive like an especially feral Winnie The Pooh, I hope they’re patting themself on the back right now.
- I am more into the sight of Michael Sheen falling onto an entire ox corpse like a starving werewolf than I am comfortable with, but fine, I guess this is who I am now.
- ALL I’M SAYING IS, Crowley and Aziraphale’s first kiss had better go EXACTLY like this.
---
- I’m here for hungover Crowley wobbling across the sand.
- I suspect this minisode is difficult to follow for any viewers who didn’t swot up on the Book of Job a fortnight or so ago, like I assume we all did.
- Michael is the only angel in this scene who possesses more than a single braincell, but they’re all clearly thick as can be. The only people thicker than them are Job and Ennon, who are somehow even worse at lying than Aziraphale and Crowley.
- Crowley has such immense fucking panache this entire episode. I do love him and his terrible beard.
---
- That little tongue in cheek thing Aziraphale does on “investigation” - he cannot get any cuter now. it’s literally impossible. please.
- Crowley slapped his hand omg
---
- Oh god, the conversation on the bench... Aziraphale is in actual tears, and Crowley is so wry and gentle and reassuring, even while delivering words that are, taken on their own, a stark form of comfort. He’s just a calm presence while Aziraphale experiences shrimp emotions on the other side of the bench. I can’t even speak about Aziraphale, honestly, but I’ll give it a shot... he is so brave and scared 😭😭😭 Hell?? He really thought he belonged in Hell? Crowley was absolutely right to gently laugh at a notion that ridiculous (and awful) (and then again, Crowley also used to be a sweet little curly-headed bunny of an angel, and look at the unspeakable thing that happened to him). There’s that little moment where Crowley says he’s not going to tell anyone, and asks Aziraphale if he’s going to tell anyone, and Aziraphale gives this little ashamed headshake, like he’s realising for the first time that he’s not, he’s willing to lie (by omission) about this too. And then he glances at the sky, as if verifying that God isn’t going to send down a thunderbolt, and realises that he’s actually safe. There aren’t going to be any consequences; he’s going to get away with it. And that’s almost worse, the idea that he doesn’t live in a world with clearly defined rules, and he truly can’t predict what God thinks, or what she is going to do. She spoke directly to Job, but she’s a closed book to Aziraphale.
---
- The ending credits are on fire so far this season.
---
Right, um, next up, an episode I haven’t already seen. asdhkagsd.

Note
Since it's DuckTales day of the week, time for asking the two episodes. Thoughts on Beware of the BUDDY System? How was it seeing Launchpad insecure on the idea of an AI replacing him as Scrooge's driver? How was Gizmoduck's introduction done? How did you like Mark Beaks returning and his interactions with Gyro? How was the Darkwing Duck appearence?
It seems Ducktales was a bit ahead of its time on the whole AI thing! I personally don't think I'd ever be able to trust an AI to drive my car for me. Too much could go wrong. Launchpad might be a terrible driver, but I still trust him more!
I'd heard of Gizmoduck from a friend, so it's cool to see him for the first time! If Gearloose ends up turning evil like I suspect he might, Gizmoduck will be a good counter.
Definitely glad we're getting more of Mark. Such a fun villain. Completely insufferable, yet also weirdly charismatic and entertaining. I get the feeling he'll be a source of trouble for Gizmoduck in the future judging by the end of the episode.
For some reason, I'd assumed that the character of Darkwing Duck was a real person in the Ducktales universe, not an actor. Still, cool to see such a legendary figure, even if I've never seen the original show he's from.
