I've seen people point this out as an issue with their relationship but i dont think Simon being a professor is actually a problem in this senario. Its pretty clear that he was never Betty's professor (considering he didnt know her name and they had only just met in the library), he seemed to be giving a guest lecture in the episode, and also she mentioned being a grad student so its highly unlikely she was an undergrad when they met. There are issues to be had with their relationship sure but i dont think thats one of them.

My personal rough BAT fam timeline

Bruce Wayne was nine when he witnessed his parents was shot, he was 18 when he traveled the world (he grew up with other former JSA Masters teaching him in America but he was 18 when he went on a world adventure by himself)

He was 19 when he returned and when he first became "Batman. "

Katherine Kane was in her late twenties when her husband was murdered in front of her and her daughter Bette, she remembered hearing stories of her late eldest sister Martha being murdered by Gotham but she had left way before katherine even knew enough about Martha.

Dick Grayson would be 9 years old when he was first taken in as a ward by eligible bachelor and Playboy Bruce Wayne celebrating his 21st birthday.

he spent 3 years training supervised with Batman.

Robin would be 12 when he was first allowed to go on patrol alone. Robin would be named after his mother's nickname for him seeing as he was born on the 1st of spring the Grayson's Little Robin.

Bette Kane and Catherine Kane became became bat girl and batwoman, when Betty was 11 (she's only a half a year younger than dick).

Barbara Gordon would be 20 when she first joined the scene as batgirl(she is roughly halfway between Bruce and Dick's age)

Time jump

At age 15 dick would form The Titans with some of his fellow peers Donna, Roy Garth, Wally. (In New York City)

At 18 he would leave the nest and recreate the Teen Titans dubbing the new Teen Titans

(and West Coast would have their own Titans made by Betty called "Titan's West Coast" in jump City

At 19 dick would be kidnapped by the al ghul family after he met a name Talia Al ghoul in meds class

At age 20 he will drop out of college.

At 21 dick would become Nightwing for the first time. Inspired by his "uncle" Clark, Bette following in her cousin's footsteps would become flame bird

Jason Todd would be taking in (12)

and later become Robin (at 13)

Notable additions I had

The kanes being more prominent, Betty and Dick remaining having their friendship.(also simplifying the Kane's family tree for Bette)

Catherine was way too young to even raise Bruce but Alfred was also dubbed Bruce's godfather and first in line for Bruce's custody should his parents die.

Keeping the pre crisis origin of Barbara being younger than Bruce but older than dick but still an adult able to go to college for bachelor's degree..

Jason Todd having less than a year to convince Bruce to send him on to patrol.

Keeping the origin that Talia first met dick at college for med school (she's probably way older but they were in the same class as she took college a little later)

And I haven't even gotten to Tim yet.

Bro omfg Betty and Simon are so fucking cute episode 8 was everything for that ship it was so nice to finally see their relationship because in the main series we only got dialogue about it but nothing shown

The callback to meeting in the library and touching the same book and Simon letting Betty taking them Betty leaving a note in it because she knew Simon would be the first to take it and learning BETTY WAS IN THE CAR when Simon found the enchiridion (which was a callback to the newspaper clipping Marcy picked up in “I remember you”

OMG THEY WERE SO CUTE the way they went on the jungle adventure together and were so dorky AND CHEERS BEING THEIR THING

What destroyed me was that line in the song “it ain’t called love without a little tragedy” EXPLANATION OF THEIR WHOLE RELATIONSHIP knowing that they were soulmate they loved other greatly were going to get married but then Simon found the crown the mushroom war bombs destroyed the world then Simon goes insane is free and uses his daughter’s plushie to get Betty back 1000 years later but is cursed again so Betty gets cursed to save Simon (which means in them both suffering from the immortality= sadness and madness curse as well) and worked so hard but fails so she makes a deal with the most powerful god to save him but has to sacrifice herself but she does anyways because she loves him AND IDBSKMAJDJWVAJBBDJS THEY GOT BE IN A CHOKEHOLD RIGHT NOW 

THEIR LOVE WILL ALWAY BE DESTINED TO TRAGEDY

i do really really like how theyre putting a spotlight on the lowkey toxic elements in Simon and Betty's relationships. like none of them mean to hurt the other or anything but Simon just doesn't think about how one-sided their relationship is and how much Betty abandons in order to be with him and i feel the miniseries is definitely gonna address that before its finished, considering Fionna's question of "So, did you go with her?" and Simon's confused question like "No, why would I've-?". like hes REALIZING it.

and its in such a subtle way. like i didnt even notice how lowkey one-sided it was until it was pointed out here on tumblr but just by remembering the show's events and all their relationship has been up to now, its SO CLEAR now. like once you notice its so blatant!!!

People jump to be either offended or defensive when talking about this so Im putting that cw there. Practice self defence. if you dont wanna read this and you click through, yeah thats not my problem.

So this is about Simon and Betty, and regarding the vague setting around their professional relationship, namely that Simon is shown giving a guest lecture and Betty is part of the class that he is lecturing to

But the setting doesn't pin down the specifics - like is he a visiting researcher, how long is he affiliated with the school, etc. That said, given this:

I've been tooting some thoughts around and here's what I find funny

How unappealing this relationship could be to general fans of the Teacher-Student fantasy.

My psuedo-analysis from being a fandom oldie is that usually this fantasy caters to the idea of having the teacher, usually the man, devote himself to caring for and promoting the student, usually the woman. And like fantasies don't need to make sense? But I'm thinking that in a society where women are always the nurturers, portraying a relationship where the man is dedicated to nurturing the growth of the woman - well that's novel. It focuses on the woman's character arc - she's the main character! - and all the ways the man supports her into becoming an accomplished, successful professional in whatever field they're in.

Do you see where I'm going here?

Simon and Betty fulfill none of that.

Straight off the bat, Betty introduces herself by teaching Simon something. She was never positioning herself as someone who wanted to learn from Simon, and often assists him. And right there? Already breaking the Teacher-Student fantasy mold.

Like the usual template for this fantasy would actually emphasize the power imbalance between the teacher and the student. The teacher knows everything. The teacher has the most responsibility and the most authority. If the student steps out of line, the teacher is supposed to provide discipline.

If it's not one of the saucier takes of the fantasy which revels in the taboo, the teacher-student romantic plotline usually center around overcoming that power imbalance. (exceptions of course exist)

And I think about how... if Simon was just less of a pushover, Simon and Betty would have followed the usual template for a teacher-student fantasy. And they would have been actually better off that way?

Let's go back to the part where I mentioned that a teacher-student dynamic would have emphasized the power imbalance, specifically if the student acts out, the teacher provides disciplinary measures. You know what Simon does? Not that!

Oh he started to. If he had exercised his authority better, he would have continued his lecture to Betty about leaving love letters to university staff out in the open for literally anybody to see. She left it in a book in the library!!! What if Simon didn't see it first?

And you know, the whole enforcing boundaries thing. He was radio silent for two (?) weeks after their trip, and he was willing to keep things professional. Betty leaves him one love letter and he goes running. Which in hindsight, that's actually uncharacteristic for staid, fastidious Petrikov. He makes the decision to confess the moment she confesses first. Like! Boundaries, gone. Wrist, snatched. Relationship, doomed.

Which is primarily the point in the whole Betty and Simon relationship. Simon treated her as an equal when he should have been aware that their relationship was never equal to begin with - not with the way Betty kept putting him on a pedestal. It's a matter of perspective and professionalism, yada yada blah blah.

TL;DR: Simon did not get the memo that he was in a teacher-student romance plotline. Hell, even if it was the saucier taboo take, that would still mean he was aware of the imbalance between him and Betty.

He was living a college AU, where they had a meet cute as collegues. She was in a celebrity AU, where she's a stan that managed to score a trip with her idol. They were never on the same page.

Not sure what "try being popular" even means. I don't think Reggie ever wins these things.

The execution on "Ballot Boxed", where after seeing how everyone is swayed by Jughead's slogan posters for Archie's candidacy Reggie buys him off and you see the rest here, leaves something to be desired. It needs just a mite better slogans than "Archie By Cracky" for me to suspend disbelief and accept. On the soundness of the premise, I am reminded that in voting for asb positions, having nothing else to go by and no clear idea of what the heck I was voting for besides a good line for the candidates' college applications, I voted for whoever have me the most number of campaign stickers.

I would include her if all my time could be devoted to fic writing but sadly that's not an option for me, so i really have to choose which story lines and characters I want to keep in my AU's lore. And while I love betty, she's not integral to my interest in Simon's dynamic w/ Marcy and Finn
