Arthur Chester Duncan (September 25, 1925 – January 4, 2023) was a tap dancer, called an “Entertainer’s Entertainer,” known for his stint as a performer on The Lawrence Welk Show (1964-82). He was the first African American regular on a variety television program. He performed all over the world, and notably at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall.

Born in Pasadena, one of thirteen children, he entered show business at age thirteen, when he was a member of a dance quartet that performed at McKinley Junior High School. He entered Pasadena City College to study pharmacy but left to pursue a career in show business.

The weight of this, as well as the weight of being the only Black man on the show, led to him pre-recording his tap dancing, saying he “didn’t take chances.” This confined him and his dance moves, not allowing him to experiment, which is a key element of tap dancing.

The 1989 film Tap featured him in a cameo appearance with other famous tap dancers. He made more TV guest appearances on Diagnosis Murder, Columbo, and The Phil Donahue Show.

In 2004 he was honored at the annual “Tap Extravaganza” in New York City.

In 2006, he was honored for his contributions to tap dance at the 15th Annual St. Louis Tap Festival.

In 2017, he appeared on the series premiere episode of the reality talent series Little Big Shots: Forever Young, where he performed a dance and reunited with actress Betty White.

In 2018, he made an appearance on The Talk as part of a surprise for co-host Sheryl Underwood, who performed a tap dance routine with Savion Glover as part of the show’s New Year’s Evolution.

Quest For Romantic Mood By Jean Towell "WOMEN SHOULD BE SHOWCASES for fashion, not victims of fashion." professes famed designer Albert Capraro. American women want realism in their clothes, he contends, not some bizarre, outrageous look from Paris that's been overplayed by the media. Capraro says he designs to create a special mood, not to shock.  "Women can understand and relate to beautiful clothes," he says.  And he's right.

The women who saw his new spring-summer collection, presented last week in Sacramento for the #Donahue TV show, loved his ultra-feminine designs.   Capraro's clothes are soft, fluid, ruffled, and invite movement to show off full skirts and draped lines.  Most of his hemlines hover around the knee and just above -- long legs are definitely in.  Necklines are open and plunging, and waistlines are belted in close  -- if you're full-busted or thick around the waist you're in trouble.

His fabrications were as soft as his lines and he featured several different groupings.  He began with a set of black and white prints that were full-skirted and had crinoline underskirts.  Then he showed polka dots, both large and small in black and white and red and white; beige silk pongee with embroidery detail; bold horizontal stripes in bright colors, and a grouping of black linen with soft pink accents.

A meticulously groomed, swarthy man, Capraro obviously loves making women look lovely.  "No matter what the economic situation is, women always want to look fabulous, and I think feminine, romantic looks always work," he says.

HAVING DESIGNED FOR CELEBRATED women like Betty Ford, Polly Bergen, Princess Grace, Diana Ross, and Cher, Capraro has an approach that is still realistic.  He's an affordable designer, with prices ranging from $100 to $500, a woman can buy a designer label and still afford shoes and accessories. Explaining his philosophy, Capraro says there's a difference between clothing and fashion.  "Clothes cover the body, fashion is an attitude."

The strongest direction in women's wear?  "Fashion is personal and individual," he answers, "No one has to do anything specific to be fashionable." Capraro thinks a woman should please herself first because what makes her happy will radiate to others and have the most positive results.  "You should select clothes that look best on you and not worry about what everyone is pushing as 'in'," he contends.

From a design standpoint, Capraro feels clothes should speak for themselves.  And for this reason, he places most emphasis on design and fabric, keeping accessories to a minimum.  "The biggest mistake women make is overdoing and wearing too much, especially jewelry," he says.

The Kenley Players was an Equity summer stock theatre company which presented hundreds of productions featuring Broadway, film, and television stars in Midwestern cities between 1940 and 1996. Variety called it the "largest network of theaters on the straw hat circuit." Founded by and operated for its entire lifespan by John Kenley, it is credited with laying the groundwork for Broadway touring companies.

The company's success was predicated on booking big-name stars for their box office potential, casting them in familiar plays and musicals, and keeping prices low, thereby attracting large crowds. In its heyday, Kenley Players productions drew crowds of 5,000 in Dayton, Akron, Columbus, Flint, Michigan, and Warren, Ohio. Kenley "pioneered the notion of putting TV stars in summer stock." In a 1950 interview Kenley told The Washington Post, "I only charge $1.50 top...I'd rather have full houses every night than be stuck with a batch of empty seats."

Headliners included Tallulah Bankhead, Cyd Charisse, Rosemary Clooney, Olivia de Havilland, Veronica Lake, Gypsy Rose Lee, Arthur Godfrey, Rudy Vallée, Tommy Tune, Burt Reynolds, Ethel Merman, Mae West, Billy Crystal, William Shatner, Betty White, Florence Henderson, Mickey Rooney, Roddy McDowall, Marlene Dietrich, Jayne Mansfield, Rock Hudson and Gloria Swanson. 

Those who appeared in more than five productions included Edie Adams, Ed Ames, Vivian Blaine, Mitzi Gaynor, Vincent Price, Genevieve, Robert Goulet, Lois Hunt, Van Johnson, Carol Lawrence, Paul Lynde, Gordon MacRae, Ann Miller, Karen Morrow, John Raitt, Martha Raye, Alexis Smith, Betty White, Barry Williams, and Earl Wrightson. In 1972, 1973, and 1975, Karen Valentine appeared in Columbus, Ohio. In 1978, Sue Ane Langdon appeared in Chicago in Columbus, Ohio.

Backstage called the Kenley Players "a legendary summer stock circuit." Playbill called it "for decades, a renowned midwestern summer stock outfit." During the period The Phil Donahue Show was broadcast from Dayton, celebrities appearing in Kenley productions appeared regularly, giving Kenley national publicity
