I finally found evidence for the fact that Isuna Hasekura of spice & wolf fame did indeed study medieval economy at a university level, he mentions reading about it for his studies in the afterword of the second coin of the sun book.
Which also led me to a very fun discovery, because in the same afterword he also explains how he got the name for the series from one of these books, and when you go to look up the one in question on amazon, you are greeted by this massive tome on economy in the middle ages with language like "preeminent historian" and "comprehensive examination of political, social, moral, and economic milieus of the late Middle Ages that engendered Europe's transformation from feudalism to capitalism."
But then you scroll down slightly further than that truly massive synopsis and are greeted by the following sight:
It pleases me much.
#Spice and wolf#for those who now want to read it too the title is#Gold & Spices: The Rise of Commerce in the Middle Ages#anyway I rip Jean Favier I bet you would've laughed your ass off at this#of COURSE I got a copy#Even better is you then look at the themes discussed in the book and they're an exact match for what isuna discusses in his novels#They're in conversation! it's high art! High art I tell You!! *gets dragged off stage by security*

Books of 2024 (in no particular order)
Hi, hello dears! Since Iām out here trying to bring back things, Iāll give a shot to this one too from last year. The ārulesā were to list 9 books youāve read and loved this year, and boy Iāve got recs to gush about. (somehow I could read 40+ books which is just insane)
No pressure tagging: @bloodlessheiratnight, @the-void-writes, @barbex, @indigowriting, @aalinaaaaaa, @approximately20blorbos, @wildswrites, @dyrewrites, @odysseywritings, @jadefyre, @goldfinchwrites, @sodaliteskull, @astarlightmonbebe, @tc-doherty, @forthesanityofstorytellers and anyone whoād like to join!

So Let Them Burn by Kamilah Cole. ya fantasy, Jamaican-inspired, dragon riders, M/F and F/F focus
God I wanted to yap about this one for so long. This book literally got me back to reading, so naturally it became an instant fav and a life-changing book. And, honestly, gave me hope for some YA since Iām not the audience for those usually. The setting is as breathtaking as fresh within the genre, and the story is a very exciting one with all the dragon riding, the academy and the gods that would loan their power. Not to mention the characters which I surprisingly grown to love very much. (And man the romance part made me kick my feet and squel in excitement at some point). So yeah, give it a try please all. Like, now.
Why We Swim by Bonnie Tsui. non-fic, great audiobook, title says all
The read that rekindled my love for swimming and being in the water. A very interesting little book about incredible lives that were saved by or moved by swimming and the waters, while it also shows light on some beneficial aspects that not everyone might know. Itās a half memoir/biography too, but that part wasnāt as impactful Iād say. However the rest did make a strong impression on me so Iād recommend this to everyone who wants to know whats the swimming and water crazed peopleās deal.
Jade City by Fonda Lee epic&urban fantasy, east-asian martial art movies and the godfather vibes, grimdark
And here we come with the big guns. I didnāt know this story is gonna be the second all time fav fantasy series on my list, nor that Fondaās gonna become the tradpub female writer idol for me, but lifeās just that unpredictable. Seriously, this book has me by the throat and I donāt want the grip to soften. All that you can imagine from the bleak, smoke filled gangster life to the flying-jumping double kicks of Michelle Yeoh, itās in it. The story also very heavily leans onto the political intrigue, and lore aspect so keep that in mind. Oh and the best ever erotica (for my taste personally) is sprinkled around there casually too, so thereās that.
Penance by Eliza Clark litfic, fake-true crime, thriller
I was never a true crime girlie, but I was a litfic one. This book is kind of a satire about how true crime impacts people, especially teenage girls, and what's up with the obsession over it. It also explores where reality and fiction blurrs, and how that can impact lives. A brutal read, in my opinion, and I ate it up in two days smh. Also, I'm going to be real honest with y'all here; I was very confused at the beginning because I never read a fake investigated interview/essay before, so I completely believed it to be true (even tho I found it in the fiction genre). So yes, Eliza Clark is brilliant in that sense, will definitely check out her other books, and will never forget the true tragedy she based the crime in the book. Oh and when she brought up tumblr and tumblrinas in the book... ugh.
Cultish by Amanda Montell. non-fic, great audiobook, title says it all
2024 was the year of litfic and non-fic on my end, or at least I tried and am still trying to get back to them. This one was a very interesting book about cults and how cult leaders use language as a tool to create their communities. Or, well, not just them but everyone. I love learning about how and why we use language as we do, and I also love learning about anything cult related even tho they make my skin crawl. This book luckily did justice on both ends.
Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid. litfic, fake-rockumentary, fleetwood mac/stevie nicks-inspired
Continuing my march on the "reading the books my favourite series and movies are based upon" journey. Daisy Jones is something that was great in book, but excellent on tv. The whole fiasco and the documentary part works better on screen I think, especially after they literally wrote, produced, sang and perfomed songs. Like what the hell. Still listening to the songs cuz some of them are peak 70s. However, the book and the series has the same vibe, so that's why I could enjoy both. (not to mention it inspired me too) What I would really highlight tho, itās Simonās story in the series because my god I love her so much. Sometimes even wish it would have been about her than Daisy, lol.
The Poppy War by R. F. Kuang. (ya) historical fantasy, very heavy war stuff, chinese mythology
It's not ya, okay? There are elements that match that, but overall, it's just not. What the book (and the whole series) actually is tho, is a raw portrayal and an essay about the horrors of the Second Sino-Japanese War, and what went down there, coated with a touch fantastical world and some magical/mythical elements. Loved the first book to pieces. This one might be the closest to ya, with all the academy time, the hint of enemies to whatevers, but only up until the half of the book. After that it blurrs and morphs. Still, the whole series is the most educational fantasy I've ever read, and will always keep the first book as a favourite. It's something everyone should read at least once, I think. But never ask me about the last installment.
The Red Palace by June Hur. ya historical fantasy, mystery, romance
Imagine a book that literally reads like a korean period drama. I mean, literally. Funny enough, I needed a second try to get to this book, but after that, oh man it checked all the boxes. It's easy to read, a fun little murder mystery in the palace, and a great experience if you're a kdrama junkie like me. I still think about this book from time to time, and will read all the other works from the author for sure. (fun fact: the royal family stuff are usually historically accurate because that's June Hur's whole sthick, which i love that for her)
We Will Devour The Night by Camilla Andrew. gaslamp fantasy, court intrigue, light vs dark, some impeccable erotica
We all know and love Cammie. And trust to bring an amazing next installement to the The Essence of the Equinox. I loved the book to pieces, because it contained everything I'd crave in a continuation. An interesting and gorgeous expanded world, escalating political intrigue and a ton of great character interactions. While, of course we still got to spend time with our best girl Laila, and best dick Darius.
#books of 2024#ngl i kinda got confused by the title of the prev post last year#lmfao#but i found this works better#maybe#also next years goal will be to read more indie and friends book#so buckle up#book recs

Since you mentioned only cats and a few other distant animals are sentient, does this mean foxes are getting their sentience removed? Midnight can talk to foxes in the books and even convinces some foxes to leave a patrol of cats alone (the foxes are WEIRDLY violent and talk about eating the cats too lmaoo).
I assume Hollyleaf's changes mean the Fox Cub Incident is either being moved or just removed entirely, I always found that small plot point interesting in face of all those "Non-cat in clan" AUs. Seems like something that could be interesting if an "us vs them" argument was formed from it, especially if it was targeted against Midnight and calling her unholy yknow?
Yeah, that sapience is gone completely. In this universe, language is limited only to humans, cats, and some distant animals that are far outside the range of Albion (elephants, bottlenoses, some parrots, etc)
And Hollyleaf's story especially. Ngl to you, I don't like that fox idea. Or anything about Hollyleaf's Story. I think it was the worst possible route to take.
"Hollyleaf will be a mother to this evil creature to learn what it's like to love something that hates you. It is so sad to be your mom Leafpool (Squirrel-who?). Don't you feel like a shitty daughter now, Holly? Let's not ask any questions about the code btw, or how you were already filled with crushing shame from it. Or how it made you so disgusted about the idea of pregnant nuns that you flipped your shit and ruined the lives of your entire family. No, what really mattered about this situation was maternal empathy. Also here take the nearest male character we can find to ship you with, we accidentally made Cinderheart too gay when she was upset about your death lmao"
But, digressing, putting my distaste of that novella aside,
WC is profoundly xenophobic already with just the cats, and I think it was a CATASTROPHIC mistake to make it so every animal is secretly intelligent but speaks animal language. Now every conflict between cats and their predators is an ethnic dispute! You're chasing out groups of people perfectly capable of reasoning if you bridged the language barrier, but they're also ACTUAL PREDATORS.
AT BEST; It's the same uncomfortable situations that Zootopia and Lion King ends up tripping over. In Zootopia, predators are used as an allegory for oppressed groups... but predators are MADE to eat prey. A rabbit is RIGHT to be terrified of a fox, twice its size with a jaw made for catching bunnies. In Lion King, lions have divine authority to rule over their dinner/subjects, and chase out any animal based on their personal ideology... which just so happens to only be leveraged against rival predator species.
(Nerd preemption: yes i know about lion guard. I do not think diverse Lion Cops were the solution you think it is.)
Carelessly adding sapience to "natural systems" often ends up accidentally justifying bigotry. Bigotry doesn't MAKE SENSE, it's bullshit we made up and perpetuate through culture, but food webs are completely logical. The rabbit fears the fox because the fox eats rabbits. The lion hates the hyena because they compete for the same food. Gazelles don't happily submit to an overlord who is divinely capable of deciding who should live and who should die, it's just nature.
But it gets even worse-- because it's actually WORST CASE; the Erins saw that complicated moral problem and went, "don't worry! They're actually born evil! Foxes just talk about food and killing things :)"
like... my brother in cats, YOU gave them language in the first place! What was the fucking point if they were just going to be evil barbarians anyway?!? For ONE scene where Midnight could show off her Duolingo streak???
So to summarize,
It was an awful idea to start with
It was executed in the worst possible way
In a series that is already plagued with xenophobic sentiment, this somehow made it even worse and more direct
If it was completely nuked it from the story, the series would be immediately better with minimal change. Holly caring for what is essentially the clan cat-equivalent of an exotic animal like a chimp or a tiger cub would have done the same thing
There is not even a glimmer of an idea here that justifies the poison that full sapience does to the wider implications of the series.
Don't even get me started on the Badger Debaucle in TNP, which is actually in my top 5 for most vile things in WC
So if I don't explicitly say that a species in BB is capable of true language, assume it is non-sapient. Talking animals like Midnight and Rat Leader are magical individuals-- gods, curses, etc.
#Guiding principle#I don't even like the name of Holly's novella. Like. Really. Couldn't think of a better title?#You're really that strapped for ideas?#Couldn't call it her Solitude. Or her Tunnel. Or whatever.#Or hell even call it her Fox#Holly's Story... tune in next week for Lion's Book. Or Jay's 634 Pages.#Our exciting new novella. Squilf's Thing.

actually I will say this. it fucking SUCKS that the devil to pay in the backlands only ever got the one very mediocre translation. it's a really good book, and a big part of why it was so groundbreaking is that it's written like the main character (a now old "cowboy") is talking to you, with all the slang and the colloquialism and even the made up words. and then this translation just fucking. NOT does that???
for example the very first word in the book is "nonada", a made up word meant as a mash of "nĆ£o Ć© nada" (it's nothing) all into one word. in the very first word you can see that this is a guy with a strong accent and very little formality in how he speaks to the listener/reader. in the translation, it's just "it's nothing". no localization, no informality, no effort in translating the experience. sure you got the literal meaning translated right, but you threw away an entire side of the narrator's characterization!!
also it literally skipped a sentence where the narrator says he thought about holding and kissing his (guy) best friend when they were arguing. mediocre AND homophobic
#(disclaimer to any brazilians who find this post: eu nĆ£o sou gringo eu sĆ³ posto em inglĆŖs)#youni originals#the devil to pay in the backlands#grande sertĆ£o veredas#fuckit tagging the original title as well. who care#i have NOT read the entire translation I only read the bits I want to see if I can post. and man. why is it so bad!!#i'm glad they didn't do the shitty bad phonetic spelling books n posts do to indicate a cowboy accent. but fuck man#you could've at least tried. even 'it ain't nothing' would've been better than just plain fucking 'it's nothing'
