 Other people’s actions, unless they directly involve you, are none of your business. In our society, this is a hard truth to accept. We are a very voyeuristic culture as a whole (have you seen our television programming or, you know, social media?), and when we pay so much attention to the lives of others, it is difficult to not take their actions personally. You are not in their heads, in their hearts; you don’t know what they are experiencing, what their motivations are. So you are not in a place to judge their actions.

 Every human being deserves compassion, understanding, tolerance. How do you know that the person who just cut you off in traffic isn’t racing for a bathroom or to retrieve an injured child? How do you know that the service person who was so rude to you hadn’t just heard that their mother was dying of cancer? How do you know that the customer who yelled at you for no reason hadn’t just had a huge fight with their spouse? There are any number of reasons why people act unkindly or unconsciously; it should not be a reason for you to do the same.

 Today, when someone rubs you the wrong way, try to think of three reasons why that was the best they could do in that moment, take a deep breath, and choose compassion. If nothing else, your day will go more smoothly.
