"Cain or Christ? 1 John 3’s Call to Choose Love"

One of the most dramatic moments in 1 John 3 is when John brings up the story of Cain and Abel. If you’ve read the story in Genesis, you know that Cain’s jealousy of his brother led to the first murder. Why does John bring this up in the middle of a chapter about love?

Because Cain is the ultimate example of what happens when we let hate and jealousy take over. Instead of choosing love, Cain let bitterness rule his heart. And it destroyed him and his relationship with God.

In contrast, we’re called to choose the path of Christ, which is the path of love. Every day, we face choices—do we hold on to grudges, stay angry, or act selfishly like Cain? Or do we follow Christ’s example, choosing forgiveness, kindness, and sacrificial love?

John is telling us that we have the power to choose our path. And when we choose love, we are walking in the light of Christ. But when we choose hate, we are choosing darkness, like Cain.

So, what will it be? Cain or Christ? Let’s follow the way of love.

ATTRIBUTES OF GOD (Psalms 89:14-17 ) By Robert Neighbor: 1. "Justice and judgment are the habitation of Thy throne." Our God is a just God and cannot excuse the guilty. If He is to save the lost, He must save them without defeating His justice and judgment. He must save them without laying low the majesty and honor of His Law. God will not, and cannot, forgive the guilty, 2. "Mercy and truth shall go before Thy face." If God is just, how can He be merciful? How can He save the sinner, the guilty? There is only one basis upon which He can be merciful, and that is upon the basis of the Cross. Jesus Christ must take the stripes due to us. He must bear the sin of many. He who knew no sin, must be made sin for us. 3. "In Thy righteousness shall they be exalted." Our God is a righteous God. Abraham said, "Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?" And God does do right, because righteousness is His raiment. We stand amazed now because after we read "Justice and judgment are the habitation of Thy throne," we read again, "Blessed is the people that know the joyful sound: they shall walk, O Lord, in the light of Thy countenance." 4. In Thy righteousness we rejoice. We are amazed, for as soon as we have considered the righteousness of God, and His glory, we also read, "In Thy Name shall they rejoice all the day."
