Active Love Living Out Your Faith as a Child of God 1 John 3 Explained

"Cain or Christ? 1 John 3’s Call to Choose Love"

One of the most dramatic moments in 1 John 3 is when John brings up the story of Cain and Abel. If you’ve read the story in Genesis, you know that Cain’s jealousy of his brother led to the first murder. Why does John bring this up in the middle of a chapter about love?

Because Cain is the ultimate example of what happens when we let hate and jealousy take over. Instead of choosing love, Cain let bitterness rule his heart. And it destroyed him and his relationship with God.

In contrast, we’re called to choose the path of Christ, which is the path of love. Every day, we face choices—do we hold on to grudges, stay angry, or act selfishly like Cain? Or do we follow Christ’s example, choosing forgiveness, kindness, and sacrificial love?

John is telling us that we have the power to choose our path. And when we choose love, we are walking in the light of Christ. But when we choose hate, we are choosing darkness, like Cain.

So, what will it be? Cain or Christ? Let’s follow the way of love.
