Strangers – Taeyeon

With a warm cozy Motown-like sound, I just couldn’t not love this song. Taeyeon feels confident in her vocals in this album, and I almost pick Blur which is also a nice song but with a lot more demanding vocals. Nonetheless, Strangers feels a bit overlooked to me, more reasons to recommend it.

シティポップは1970年代半ばに現れ、80年代に全盛を迎えた日本の音楽ジャンルの一つで、音楽的にはファンク、ディスコ、R&B、AOR、ソフトロック、フォークロック、シン��ポップなど幅広い要素から成り立っています。当初は単に「都会的な」ポップスとして国内でイメージ広告的に使われた呼称が、2010年代に入ってユーチューブや各種ストリーミングにおいて海外の好事家の注目を浴びることにより大きな再生回数を数えるようになったもので、定義をめぐって専門家の間でも見解が分かれているようです。

作編曲においてアメリカ黒人音楽などからの盗用が散見されることで、ヴェイパーウェイブ、フューチャーファンクといったサンプルベースのマイクロジャンルの先駆者とされているようですが、私が想起するのはミュージックマガジン編集長だった中村とうよう氏が、このジャンルを代表するともいえる大瀧詠一のアルバムを評して語った「アーティフィシャル（人工的）。彼らが模倣するようなアメリカ音楽はスポンティーニアス（自発的）」という言葉です。K-popをはじめまるでAI生成されたような音楽が莫大な再生回数を稼いでいる、ポピュラー音楽やヒットチャートという器が、マーケティングや新自由主義の考え方によってバラバラに分断され空洞化してしまった現状を予見する言葉のように思うのです。
