Best of 2023 TV Shows #12: That 90s Show (NETFLIX)*

Nice to know 4 years ago when 90s nostalgia began the reboot wave was also in full swing. So it makes sense that this years runner up for best new show cashes in on both aspects.

Returning to a basement in southern Wisconsin 15 years after a group of 6 owned the place.

July 1995, Eric Forman and Donna Pinciotti arrive to visit his parents for the Fourth of July weekend. In tow is their own daughter the aptly named Leia.

While bored Leia shoots hoops and ends up connecting with the current occupant of her mom’s former room Gwen Runck.

Befriending her she would also come to know her half brother Nate and a new circle of friends.

Nate’s other half Nikki, who more than makes up for his shortcomings.

Ozzie who shows his chops with tech and has more than his fair share of moments.

And Jay Kelso son of Michael and surprisingly Jackie Burkhart who have divorced twice within 15 years. A clever combo of his mom’s brains and dad’s charm.

When Leia ends up staying with Red and Kitty for the summer 10 weeks of 90s style 70s show mishaps would follow suit.

Including Gwen and Nate’s mom Sherri who takes Bobs spot as the persistent neighbor that ends up connecting with Fez.

Bob himself joining Leias 15th birthday.

And even Leo who clues the new gang in on a 90s family classic.

What nostalgia props up is supported by a rich storyline that sees Ozzie bond with Kitty, Leia grow close with Jay, and a new generation of circle action in the basement.

It may be linked to its past but does forge its own way forward while setting things up for an interesting future.

1996 sure has its moments including a possible trip to New Orleans for Green Bay in Super Bowl XXXI.

Let’s see if it’ll take them.

the liberty annabeth has been given to be deeply unserious and true to her character in the new “pjo” books while being deprived of that aspect of her character elsewhere is so personal to me because what do you mean she wants to duet with percy on shallow, cheerfully bon voyages her boyfriend off a cliff, carries around a backpack of mystery mouskatools including herbal tea and snake treats just in case, instructs percy “don’t stop skipping, skippy” when he has the rainbow staff for absolutely no other reason aside from shits and giggles, breaks into his bedroom for no reason besides the fact that she simply likes the challenge, apparently regularly signs autographs and is fawned over up on olympus, and keeps suggesting cute and dumb shit to get magically scribed into percy’s diy college rec letter. and now she’s giggling with her architecture friends about glass and marshmallows and wants to throw a haunted house party in a scary goddess’s mansion (a goddess scary enough to make her boyfriend literally piss his boxers) because she’s too self-assured to believe they can’t evade the consequences and too excited to experience something she’s never gotten to throughout her childhood and adolescence. not to mention the callback to her love of animals, no matter how demonic, and how she misses playing fetch with cerberus…oh annabeth chase, the woman that you are. like yes let her be impulsive and unserious and excited and batshit and a troll because she’s just a girl trying to have fun in a miserable fucking world godammit!! rick riordan, they could never make me like you, but i’ll give you this one thing—the whimsy has been restored and its name is annabeth chase

Best of 2022 TV Shows #9: Abbott Elementary (ABC)^

For the years best new show we look at something new, yet familiar.

The state of education.

Through the eyes of an optimistic teacher at an elementary school.

Quinta Brunson plays Janine Teagues a second grade teacher at Philadelphias Willard R Abbott Elementary. This school while underfunded, sees the day to day lives of her and others as they give hope and guidance to the students.

Others include Greg Eddie a substitute turned full time first grade teacher who applied for the principal. Jacob Hill who joined at the same time as Janine, Barbara Howard a veteran of the school who is wary of modern tech, Mr. Johnson the Janitor who can be seen as a source of levity for the school and the students, and Melissa Schemmenti the goofball who has methods that go beyond the traditional academic model.

All under the watchful gaze of Ava Coleman, the principal only via extortion as she sees the job only as a means to an end.

Now as this has many style similarities to the office, this does win out with giving a look at the modern state of the education system with its emphasis on productivity compared to inspiration as Janine seeks to improve the lives of her students all the while making Ava run around her helpful ideals with realistic backbreaking truths.

But what Quinta Burinson does here is nothing short of wonderful seemingly blending old assumptions with modern education winning many over.

The pilot just has her wanting to get a new rug for one of her students and this was somehow one of the years best tv moments.

Downright hilarious and inspiring to say the least.

I've seen a lot of different takes on Fear Toxin/other fear causing stuff (Yellow Lanterns Ring or something)(later just called Fear Toxin cause I'm lazy) but here is another one.

Danny seems like he isn't affected by Fear Toxin because his biggest fear is that his accident changed him so much he is no longer human, he can no longer truly experience human things.

So when he gets lungful of fear Toxin, he feels normal. He was antsy before, because c'mon, it's a rogue attack but it's not worse. Or so he thought. Because the anxiety lingers. Not enough to register as abnormal just this slight hypervigilance that makes you see things about yourself and your surroundings that you'd never realize otherwise. He'd realize he doesn't blink as often. He'd realize that if he doesn't consciously focus, he sometimes seems to not touch the ground. Forgets to breathe. He can't feel his own pulse at time. He'd realize people will miss him when he's walking down the street as if he was invisible (people just don't care about everyone they pass by). When he'd look straight into his reflection, he'd look slightly to the left. Not enough to actually name anything that was wrong but just stretched enough to fall on the wrong side of the uncanny valley. If he just caught his reflection in the peripheral vision, it'd be vaguely shadowy creature with glowing green eyes and white smoke instead of hair. Overall he'd be just wrong enough to be distinctly not human.

For everyone else, he'd be just a dude. Literally couldn't find more normal dude than this dude. Will pass as absolutely normal human unless someone is specifically looking for ecto-ghost stuff. Even most magic users wouldn't clock him at the glance

Tldr: Fear Toxin makes Danny perceive himself as some sort of eldritch horror but not enough to make him believe he'd actually be affected, while from outside perspective he's Just A Dude™

It would be nice to hear from Wanda and Cosmo! It is kind of nice that you guys have two children like your own family does. Are you two still close to your siblings? Wanda has a sibling and Cosmo also have a sibling just like Timmy and Peri. Do they share some sibling stories to your children?

Wanda and Cosmo both reconnected with their siblings shortly after having Peri. Or, well. More like Blonda reentered their lives once she realized she had a baby nephew. Eventually, they slowly patched things up the more Blonda came to visit Peri.

Schnozmo was dragged back kicking and screaming. Mama Cosma refuses to have her sons live estranged lives now that she has a grandchild in the picture. Schnozmo doesn't know how to handle children, but he's doing his best.

Peri likes Schnozmo because he makes silly noises and funny stories. But he prefers Blonda's theatrics much more and loves playing Dress Up with her.
