The Night Agent (Season 2 Review) | A Thrilling Continuation with High Stakes and Emotional Depth
S2 of #TheNightAgent is here, and it doesn’t hold back! Twists, high stakes, and emotional depth. Peter & Rose’s dynamic shines brighter than ever. Who’s ready for Season 3 already?! #SpyThriller #TheNightAgentSeason2 #MustWatch #TVReview 📖 Full review:
When The Night Agent first premiered, it grabbed me with its fast-paced action and high-stakes intrigue. I enjoyed Matthew Quirk’s novel and its adaptation didn’t disappoint. Season 1 was a wild ride, introducing us to Peter Sutherland (played brilliantly by Gabriel Basso), a low-level FBI agent working the night shift in the White House basement, manning a phone that never rings – until one…

MICKEY7 by EDWARD ASHTON
Dying isn’t any fun…but at least it’s a living. Mickey Barnes is an Expendable: a disposable employee on a human expedition sent to colonize the ice world Niflheim. Whenever there’s a mission that’s too dangerous―even suicidal―the crew turns to Mickey. After one iteration dies, a new body is regenerated with most of his memories intact. After six deaths, Mickey7 understands the terms of his deal…and why it was the only colonial position unfilled when he took it. On a routine scouting mission, Mickey7 goes missing and is presumed dead. By the time he returns to the colony base, surprisingly helped back by native life, his fate has been sealed. There’s a new clone, Mickey8, reporting for Expendable duties, and there can only be one Expendable. If Mickey7 reports his survival to Command, one of them is going into the recycler. If he doesn’t and they’re caught, they both are. Meanwhile, life on Niflheim is getting worse. The atmosphere is unsuitable for humans, food is in short supply, and terraforming is going poorly. The native species are growing curious about their new neighbors, and that curiosity has Commander Marshall very afraid. Ultimately, the survival of both lifeforms will come down to Mickey7. That is, if he can just keep from dying for good.
RATING :: 3.5 / 5
Review under the cut! 🚨 Beware SPOILERS! 🚨
Please remember that these are only my opinions. Read the book yourself - your mileage may vary. 💜
🚨 TRIGGER WARNINGS - violence, death, traumatic events🚨
I'll admit, I'm not as big of a sci-fi nerd as I used to be. I don't really read sci-fi books much. But after finding a few gems (don't worry, reviews of those are coming soon!) and a glowing Reddit recommendation, I decided to give Mickey7 a shot.
The book starts off in an Antarctic wasteland. It is cold. Very cold. So cold that you cannot survive without a suit to protect you - and even then, you shouldn't stay out very long. Mickey7, the seventh iteration of Mickey Barnes, is exploring a cliff while pilot and good friend Berto watching from the air. Mickey7, distracted by a rock that looks like a monkey, plummets face-first over the cliff edge and blacks out.
When he wakes up, he's in a strange tunnel with a sprained wrist. Berto tells him there's no way he can get him out, so he should kill himself - because Mickey is an Expendable, someone whose personality and body can be reconstructed from virtual memory, he'll wake up in his bunk the next morning, hungover and covered in tank goo but alive and well. Berto flies off, and Mickey7 resigns himself to his fate.
But these tunnels are weird. They're perfectly round, clearly machine-made - but this world doesn't have machines. It has creepers, weird centipede-like aliens that will swarm you and eat you down to the bones in seconds, but not machines. Instead of taking off his helmet and letting hypothermia take him, he decides to explore a bit - and runs head-first into the largest creeper he's ever seen. It picks him up in its many legs and shoots down the tunnel. He resigns himself to yet another traumatizing painful death.
But it doesn't come. The creeper pops out of a tunnel near the dome habitat that Mickey7 lives in, sets him gently on the ground, and disappears. Mickey7 has survived to see another day.
He makes his way into the habitat and straight to his bunk - he could use a really good nap after whatever-the-hell that was. But it is the next morning, and in his bunk is Mickey8 - his newest iteration.
This is bad. This is really bad. After a literal world-ending catastrophe involving hundreds of clones of the same person, Multiples (clones) are shunned and instantly sentenced to death by organics recycler. He's already ostracized by the community - the Natalists see him as a soulless abomination, and everyone else thinks he's off-putting and weird (except for Nasha, his girlfriend and Berto's fellow combat pilot). If they find out he's a Multiple... well, he'll probably be fine. He's the original (or as original as being printed out of organic goop and shoved full of memories can be). Mickey8 will most likely be recycled - unless they get caught. Then both of them will be recycled, and the colony will continue with Mickey9.
But here's the deal - Mickey8 doesn't want to be recycled. He thinks it's his turn at bat. And he's going to do everything in his power to keep his shot at life.
The pacing in this book is...not great. Chapters will randomly begin as a flashback or reminiscing or recounting tales of this universe's history, such as the Alan Manikova incident. Or Ashton will explain literal rocket science in great detail (if you're a science nerd, you'll absolutely love this - but I'm not, and it went completely over my head. Whoosh). None of these come with a warning - you just kind of have to figure out yourself where in the timeline you are.
The characters are somewhat one-dimensional. Mickey7 is a loner who prefers to lay in his bunk and research history. Mickey8 is lazy and finds every excuse not to take his turn doing actual work - but is absolutely willing to eat more than his portion of their shared rations and "hang out" (re: bang) Nasha. Nasha is a combat pilot with a take-no-crap attitude who finds him irresistible. Berto is self-centered and a bit of a coward, with an ego to hide his insecurities. Captain Marshall is a hard-ass Natalist who rules with an iron fist. There are other characters, of course, and other than Cat Chen, they are even flatter - which is fair, since they're only mentioned for a few pages then off doing their own thing for the rest of the book.
The world-building isn't bad at all. It has great potential. We find out about Midgard, the human homeworld (the new one, anyway - no one has heard from Old Earth in a very long time) and a few other planets. We learn about Niflheim, the planet Mickey7 is currently on, and its hostile environment. And the technology is explained in great detail - which, like I said, went right over my head. If you enjoy sci-fi technology and science, you'll really like the descriptions in this book.
Ashton also gets into great detail describing the few deaths that Mickey7 remembers. We get to read every gory detail. If you have a light stomach, maybe skip this one. It gets pretty brutal in places.
I wish we got a little more dying - I mean, Mickey7's entire character is that he gets to be rebuilt upon death. I also wish we got to see more of the creepers. We see them exactly three times in the entire book, and they're glossed over pretty quickly. For a dominant species, they're barely there, which is sad because they're really cool.
The climax is pretty tense, though it's not explained very well. You understand why in the epilogue, where it all ties together, but when you're reading it, it's a little confusing and left me flipping back to earlier pages going "wait, what did I miss?"
I enjoyed the book, but I think it's one I'll only read once. If you're a sci fi nerd who loves reading the details and tribulations of world colonization and space travel, you'll really like this book. If you're not... well, give it a shot anyway. You might like it!
Thanks for reading my book review! Remember, this review is just my opinion. I (almost) always recommend you read the book yourself and see if you like it!
