Ooo, I wonder what Zeus and Berry gift each other for anniversaries and birthdays! Their religious holidays have specific gift traditions, so they probably don't stray too far from what's expected for those aha.
Zeus is stupid rich (thanks Tellio!) so he can buy literally anything for Berry. He usually spoils her. Berry doesn't have a ton of money as she came from a "normal" family, and Zeus seems to have so much stuff already. But she tries really hard to get him at least a couple really heartfelt thought out gifts, and that means sooooo much to Zeus he can't explain it to her. He cherishes everything she's got him.
#they dont have christmas on the island as most minyathins aren't christian/catholic#like of course some people celebrate other things but its not the main holiday#minyathins have their own religion and their own traditions to go along with those :)#stevie.txt#text#the layeos#zeus layeo#berry layne

Whenever you feel alone, just remember that those kings will always be there to guide you. And so will I.
Born to a turbulent family on a Mississippi farm, James Earl Jones passed away today. He was ninety-three years old. Abandoned by his parents as a child and raised by a racist grandmother (although he later reconciled with his actor father and performed alongside him as an adult), the trauma of his childhood developed into a stutter that followed him through his primary school years – sometimes, his stutter was so debilitating, he could not speak at all. In high school, Jones found in an English teacher someone who found in him a talent for written expression, and encouraged him to write and recite poetry in class. He overcame his stutter by graduation, although the effects of it carried over for the remainder of his life.
Jones' most accomplished roles may have been on the Broadway stage, where he won three Tonys (twice winning Best Actor in a Play for originating the lead roles in 1969's The Great White Hope by Howard Sackler and 1987's Fences by August Wilson) and was considered one of the best Shakespearean actors of his time.
But his contributions to cinema left an impact on audiences, too. Jones received an Honorary Academy Award alongside makeup artist Dick Smith (1972's The Godfather, 1984's Amadeus) in 2011. From the end of Hollywood's Golden Age to the dawn of the summer Hollywood blockbuster in the 1970s to the present, Jones' presence – and his basso profundo voice – could scarcely be ignored. Though he could not sing like Paul Robeson nor had the looks of Sidney Poitier, his presence and command put him in league of both of his acting predecessors.
Ten of the films James Earl Jones appeared in, whether in-person or voice acting, follow (left-right, descending):
Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964) – directed by Stanley Kubrick; also starring Peter Sellers, George C. Scott, Sterling Hayden, Keenan Wynn, and Slim Pickens
The Great White Hope (1970) – directed by Martin Ritt; also starring Jane Alexander, Chester Morris, Hal Holbrook Beah Richards, and Moses Gunn
Star Wars saga (1977-2019; A New Hope pictured) – multiple directors, as the voice of Darth Vader, also starring Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Peter Cushing, Alec Guinness, Billy Dee Williams, Anthony Daniels, David Prowse, Kenny Baker, Peter Mayhew, and Frank Oz
Claudine (1974) – directed by John Berry; also starring Diahann Carroll, Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs, and Tamu Blackwell
Conan the Barbarian (1982) – directed by John Milius; also starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sandahl Bergman, Ben Davidson, Cassandra Gaviola, Gerry Lopez, Mako, Valerie Quennessen, William Smith, and Max von Sydow
Coming to America series (1988 and 2021; original pictured) – multiple directors; also starring Eddie Murphy, Arsenio Hall, John Amos, Madge Sinclair, Shari Headley, Jermaine Fowler, Leslie Jones, Tracy Morgan, and KiKi Layne
The Hunt for Red October (1990) – directed by John McTiernan; also starring Sean Connery, Alec Baldwin, Scott Glenn, and Sam Neill
The Sandlot (1993) – directed by David Mickey Evans; also staring Tom Guiry, Mike Vitar, Patrick Renna, Chauncey Leopardi, Marty York, Brandon Adams, Grant Gelt, Shane Obedzinski, Victor DiMattia, Denis Leary, and Karen Allen
The Lion King (1994) – directed by Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff, as the voice of Mufasa; also starring Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Matthew Broderick, Jeremy Irons, Moira Kelly, Niketa Calame, Ernie Sabella, Nathan Lane, and Robert Guillaume, Rowan Atkinson, Whoopi Goldberg, Cheech Marin, Jim Cummings, and Madge Sinclair
Field of Dreams (1989) – directed by Phil Alden Robinson; also starring Kevin Costner, Amy Madigan, Ray Liotta, and Burt Lancaster

Boy Bands in 5 Minutes — VoicePlay music video
youtube
People have been singing together since there have been people, but the specific phenomenon of boy bands really took form during the mid-20th century. In that grand tradition, VoicePlay had been performing a medley of songs from their mainstream counterparts infused with their own trademark silliness at live shows for years. With a few tweaks and a lot of hard work, they created this incredible audio-visual tour through decades of pop, rock, motown, and hip-hop hits. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride. That is, if you can resist dancing along.
Details:
title: Boy Bands in 5 Minutes
original songs / performers: "I Want It That Way" by Backstreet Boys; [0:16] "I Want You Back" by The Jackson 5; [0:42] "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" by The Beatles; [1:02] "Ain't Too Proud To Beg" by The Temptations; [1:23] "Walk Like A Man" by The Four Seasons; [1:54] "Candy Girl" by New Edition; [2:05] "Poison" by Bell Biv DeVoe; [2:23] "You Got It (The Right Stuff)" by New Kids on the Block; [2:39] "Thank You" & "Motownphilly" by Boyz II Men; [3:08] "The Hardest Thing" by 98 Degrees; [3:29] "I Want It That Way" (reprise); [4:03] "Pop" by *NSYNC; [4:29] "Best Song Ever" by One Direction; [4:50] "Fake Love" by BTS
written by: "I Want It That Way" by Andreas Carlsson & Max Martin; "I Want You Back" by Berry Gordy, Freddie Perren, Alphonso Mizell, & Deke Richards; "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" by John Lennon & Paul McCartney; "Ain't Too Proud To Beg" by Norman Whitfield & Eddie Holland; "Walk Like A Man" by Bob Crewe & Bob Gaudio; "Candy Girl" by Maurice Starr & Michael Jonzun; "Poison" by Elliot "Dr. Freeze" Straite; "You Got It (The Right Stuff)" by Maurice Starr; "Thank You" by Dallas Austin & Boyz II Men; "Mowtownphilly" by Dallas Austin, Michael Bivins, Nathan Morris, & Shawn Stockman; "The Hardest Thing" by Steve Kipner & David Frank; "Pop" by Justin Timberlake & Wade Robson; "Best Song Ever" by Wayne Hector, "John the Blind" Ryan, Ed Drewett, & Julian Bunetta; "Fake Love" by "Hitman" Bang Si-hyuk, Kim "RM" Nam-joon, & Kang "Pdogg" Hyo-won
arranged by: Geoff Castellucci
release date: 14 June 2019
My favorite bits:
easing into things with harmonies of a memorable song from their own youth, then jumping back to the early stuff
Earl at nearly 40 sounding just as good as preteen Michael Jackson on those high vocals
the clever camera wipe transitions that allow them to change outfits and positions to reflect each group
the rhythm section doing some air instrumentation during "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" 🎸🥁
J.None actually not being too proud to ask his bandmates to come back after they jazz-square-slide away
using the whip pan to and from the gossipers to make another costume change
Geoff pushing past Earl, which propels Eli off screen and into the right order for the next dance sequence
the beautiful juxtaposition of the "Single Ladies" choreography done to "Walk Like A Man" 💃🕺
the airy decending sounds Layne makes as they all fall down and the camera spins into the next song
getting back to their barbershop roots for "Candy Girl"
bracketing "Thank You" with the unmistakeable bell chords from "Motownphilly"
Layne doing the quick change "wrong" and yanking off his dickie with dramatic flair as he starts beatboxing again
the whole montage of "Pop"-able items, particularly the intense Bubble Tape™ stand-off, and J.None being showered in bubbles
playing up the dork-itude of the One Direction dance moves
that chromatic descent transitioning into the final song
the delightful floof of Geoff's hair as he rebounds the cascading movement back down the line
that lush ending, complete with Eli's fantastic riff
Trivia:
○ This video was the result of a Patreon poll, and the option the guys least wanted to win, because they knew how much work it would be. But they committed to it like the professionals they are, going all out on the music, costumes, and choreography.
○ The medley is an update / expansion of the previous version they had been performing at live shows for many years. They took the opportunity to swap out some songs in the earlier arrangement for others by the same artists:
Jackson 5 — "ABC" ⇒ "I Want You Back"
Four Seasons — "Sherry" ⇒ "Walk Like a Man"
*NSYNC — "Bye Bye Bye" ⇒ "POP"
One Direction — "What Makes You Beautiful" ⇒ "Best Song Ever"
○ To get the dance moves right, they called in a ringer — choreographer Kristin Denehy from The Sing-Off competition show and live tours, who they'd also worked with on their "Cheerleader" video several years before.
○ The group of gossipers during "Walk Like a Man" is all of VoicePlay's spouses at the time — Nick Perez, Kathy Castellucci, Cyndi Stein, and Ashley Jacobson.
○ The sandwich delivery guy in "Thank You" is the fellas' longtime friend and collaborator Rek Dunn. Given that Boyz II Men are proud Philadelphians, he's probably handing over a cheesesteak.
○ Eli sings some of the Korean lyrics in the closing BTS section. Given that he speaks Japanese, he was probably the most likely of the guys to get the pronunciation right. (And judging by the YouTube comments from BTS fans, he did a good job.)
○ When Geoff was rehearsing the choreography at home, he got some personal coaching from Kathy and little William.
○ The guys also had group dance rehearsals at a local studio.
extracted from Geoff's Instagram farewell post for J.None
○ Things got a little out of hand while they were filming the bubble wrap section of the "Pop" montage.
instagram
○ They got their act together for the transition to the next song, though.
instagram
○ The long day of filming and dancing aggravated Earl's old foot injury, so he spent the next day wearing a brace to help it recover.
○ The streaming audio version is separated into 4 tracks with 3 or 4 songs each, primarily due to licensing restrictions.
○ The 4:2:Five boys had opened for 98 Degrees at Sea World all the way back in September 2001, just a few months after they'd released their first professional EP. When VoicePlay appeared on the fourth season of The Sing-Off in 2013, working with Nick Lachey again was a little bit of a reunion.

Not So Berry: Rose, Gen 2
Layne aged up to a young adult and moved out! Hopefully we will still see her around, since Lennon doesn't feel too inclined to keep in contact with his sister.

I did one of these for my sideblog BlackFemmeCharacterDependency (BFCD) and... While it’ll take longer on this end to do because there are more prominent figures here than on that one, I thought it would be good to also have one for my main...

Continuing to worldbuild Penbre, and the North-West, and North-East regions
So, it has a hyperoceanic climate where it rains constantly, with long nights in the winter.
The North-West region is composed of the regions of Penbre, the smallest province but also the one containing the capital city, Aulbec directly south of it, and Layne stretching North, all the way to the sea. Yaune is directly to the East and Lennes is the Eastern Limit of the North-West Region.
The North-East region also feature a cold climate, but it is slightly more continental, with colder summers and warmer winters. It's composed of flat, swampy land, with to it's extreme South-East the beginnings of a mountenous region.
It is still very rainy, especially in it's South-East region with it's mountains.
It contains the provinces of Chercape (Northern Limit), Fleuchère (A bit further south, Western limit), Mare (center), Epley (Further south), Aurbec (East) and Brélande (South-Eastern Limit).
Penbre recives most of it's rye from this region, which is dry enough in some parts to grow it. It's mostly fed to the capital.
It has a local diet composed of essencially of rye, oats, peas and occasionally barley. Watercress and cattails are the main vegetables with some leaks and asperagus on the side, but Brélande also produces enough rutapagas, parsnips, shallots, peas, radishes and cabbage. Because most of it is flat, swampy terrain, only lean foods are cooked whenever possible, so fat and oil cannot transport fire.
Mussles and other freshwater shellfish are the prefered source of proteine during lent. In the Northmost province of Chercape, it's coastal environment allows enough wind to the meat of large animals, and is the biggest producer and consummer of pork and beef compaired to it's most inland counterparts. Crab is consummed in rather fair quantities, and is considered "pauper's meat" because of it's scavenging habits, same for smaller species of lobster. They also consume many species of fish, mostly carp. Diary products are popular because of their ability to be prepared through fermentation as opposed to cooking. The main sources of animal fat are lard and butter. It is also highly urbanized, allowing it to have a good fungiculture. It produces also plenty of blueberries. The region has very well-reputed cheeses, and often eats dairy with seafood. Kelp is quite the part of the poor man's diet.
In the rest of the North-West region, geese and duck are the main source of animal fat.
The province of Aurbec pruduces a fair amount of apple, hence it's name, but also some birch and hazel trees.
Brélande eats the highest amount of berries both per person and per capita, something allowed by it's rockier terrain. Cranberries, lingonberries, cloudberries, blueberries, sea hawthorne, hawthorne, rosehip, rowan, virburnum and birdcherries are the commonly found fruits. Their prefered source of fat is pinenuts and hazelnuts, closely fallowed by lard and butter. It's the only province that doesn't consume large quantities of cattails. They also tend to eat more chicken than duck or geese, and prefer fattier broths and stews. Because of the cold climate, they tend to enjoy long-cooked stews.
Cranberries is the most common fruit province wise, with apple being next, regionally.
The local cuisine is mostly based on pickling, salting and lactic acid fermentation of all kind, with bread and lean stews.

God Zeus is soooo full of himself. He wants everyone to kiss the ground he walks on, treat him like a God. There's only one person on this planet he treats as an equal and that's Berry. She's a goddess to him. She has him wrapped around her finger and she doesn't even know it. Anything she wants, she gets. If he's ever being too much, too mean to Rosaylie, she can stop him with a simple hand on his knee or shoulder. Even a quiet "Stop." Will make him immediately quit. As long as it's coming from her. Berry knows that Zeus is part of a cartel. She knows that he aims to run it one day, one way or another. She doesn't know what this means for her and her own future but she loves Zeus, so she stands by him.

💬 Amber Ferrano: “She was sweet, and forgiving, and real, and good to everyone. I don’t know, maybe other people have never had a friend like her or a friendship like all of ours. We were never friends, we met and we did become a tribe. Kathleen [Demri’s mom] said we were part of something special because of the music and art we were surrounded by but I really think it had to do with the people more than anything. I told Demri that if we were all blind and in a room filled with people we would gravitate towards each other because our souls would direct us to who we were supposed to be with. Demri would say she wasn’t just soulmates with Layne but with her friends as well.” - via World of Demri ig.
💬 Elsa Schmolke: “I remember she was a cool sweet person, a natural beauty, petite, and kinda loud. Despite her short stature she was photogenic and actually was a model for a few local photographers. I remember she was a Pisces - not musically but more fashion-conscious, sensitive, and artistically creative in her own right.” - via @spiritofparrott
💬 Brent Scott Berry: “She was a presence that anyone noticed. A smart alertness, a welcoming smile, a witty attitude. I saw some of her earliest modeling pictures and was amazed at the plasticity of her beauty. The world needs more souls like her, she seemed to be an old soul even in her early teens.” - via @spiritofparrott

Book Review: “Lanegan” by Greg Prato
It’s a weird thing to put in a biography. But in this case, the following is true.
“When it comes to Mark Lanegan, there are many things that you are better off not knowing,” music journalist Charles R. Cross says of the former Screaming Trees and Queens of the Stone Age singer and solo artist.
Fortunately for “Lanegan” author Greg Prato, Lanegan wrote all that stuff in his harrowing memoir, “Sing Backwards and Weep,” freeing Prato to focus on other stuff in his oral biography.
Like Lanegan the man, “Lanegan” the book is non-traditional. Generous at 319 pages and including a passel of black-and-white photos from throughout Lanegan’s career, it’s self-published - released Feb. 22 on the one-year anniversary of Lanegan’s death from undisclosed causes - but professional in content and layout.
“I look at (Nirvana’s) Kurt (Cobain), (Alice in Chains’) Layne (Staley) or even more Andy Wood - Mark was darker than them all,” Cross says. “I don’t know that Mark’s death is darker, but Mark’s life was darker than any of those people.”
In addition to Cross, Prato spoke with Lanegan’s Screaming Trees bandmate Gary Lee Conner; QOTS bassist Nick Oliveri; collaborators Chris Goss (Masters of Reality), Mike Johnson (Dinosaur Jr.), guitarist Jeff Fielder and bassist Aldo Struyf; Sub Pop Records CDO Megan Jasper; original Nirvana drummer Chad Channing; former Red Hot Chili Pepper Josh Klinghoffer; former Soundgarden bassist Kim Thayil; Jesse Hughes of Eagles of Death Metal; and friends including Sally Berry, Clay Decker - who makes the dangerous assertion that Lanegan died because he was vaccinated against the coronavirus - and others. The result is an often-surprising portrait of a singular musician that paints Lanegan as an even more enigmatic figure than he seems in life and art.
“Like, we liked Lindsey Buckingham,” Hughes says in discussing Lanegan’s musical influences.
“How the fuck are you going to tell me you can see that? Point to a Mark Lanegan song and go, ‘Oh, Lindsey Buckingham.’ I couldn’t do it. So, the fact that I can’t do it tells me … Mark was in full possession the knowledge that he was unique.”
Rather than unfolding like a typical oral biography, Prato’s book is organized in 16 chapters built mostly around a single question such as “What made Mark so unique as a singer?,” “What was it like to work - in various capacities and on various projects - with Mark?” and “How would you like Mark to be remembered?” This makes “Langegan” as unusual and singular as Lanegan.
Though Lanegan left a ton of damage - to himself and his friends and collaborators - in his wake, the man who emerges from “Lanegan” is a musical omnivore (as his unlikely partnerships with Isobel Campbell and Soulsavers demonstrate) with a wicked sense of humor and a fierce sense of loyalty to the people he held closest.
“His heart was wonderful,” producer John Agnello says. “I know he was tough, I know he could be a cocksucker to people, but man, I saw things about him that I don’t think enough people saw.”
These are the things about Lanegan you are better off knowing. And they’re there for the learning in “Lanegan.”

Pinellas Park, FL — VoicePlay live performances
In the middle of June 2016, the VoicePlay guys scooted down to the Tampa Bay area for a concert in between longer bookings and video shoots. With Layne on paternity leave, they once again called on Antonio Fernandez to come play and keep the beat.
.
youtube
This video is missing the very beginning of the song, but it's still a great way to kick off a VoicePlay live show.
Details:
title: Don't Stop Me Now
original performers: Queen
written by: Freddie Mercury
arranged by: VoicePlay
performance date: 18 June 2016
My favorite bits:
Antonio's solo percussion riff
dropping into the half-time groove
those lush rising harmonies on ♫ "any tiii-IIIME" ♫
creating extra crescendo through synchronized microphone movements
the crisp syncopation on the ♫ "no one can stop me" ♫ section
Trivia:
The guys had been performing and refining this song since the 4:2:Five era. The earliest video I've found is from a benefit concert at the University of Rochester in early 2009.
A softer version of the opening chords from this arrangement were the closing section of VoicePlay's Queen in 5 Minutes medley almost two and a half years later.
.
youtube
They're not quite a boy band, but VoicePlay definitely sounds good singing these classic pop songs.
Details:
title: boy band medley
original songs / performers: "ABC" by The Jackson 5; [0:44] "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" by The Beatles; [1:27] "My Girl" by The Temptations; [2:15] "Sherry" by The Four Seasons; [3:12] "YMCA" by The Village People; [3:48] "You Got It (The Right Stuff)" by New Kids on the Block; [4:09] "I Want It That Way" by Backstreet Boys; [4:48] "Bye Bye Bye" by *NSYNC; [5:20] "What Makes You Beautiful" by One Direction
written by: "ABC" by Berry Gordy, Freddie Perren, Alphonzo Mizell, & Deke Richards; "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" by John Lennon & Paul McCartney; "My Girl" by Smokey Robinson & Ronald White; "Sherry" by Bob Gaudio; "YMCA" by Jacques Morali & Victor Willis; "You Got It (The Right Stuff)" by Maurice Starr; "I Want It That Way" by Andreas Carlsson & Max Martin; "Bye Bye Bye" by Kristian Lundin, Jake Schulze, & Andreas Carlsson; "What Makes You Beautiful" by Savan Kotecha, Rami Yacoub, & Carl Falk
arranged by: VoicePlay
performance date: 18 June 2016
My favorite bits:
the choreography getting progressively complex as they move through the eras (and adjusted so Antonio didn't have to learn everything the other guys had been doing for years)
Tony's fantastic belt in "I Wanna Hold Your Hand"
the little hip swings from the lefthand trio on ♫ "dance the night away" ♫
everybody leaving Geoff hanging on the "YMCA" chorus, and his petulent "I hate you guys."
the crunchy transition from "Right Stuff" to "Bye Bye Bye"
the era-appropriate reverb on the last few songs
that beefy growl at the start of "Bye Bye Bye"
Eli getting in on some percussion at the start of the last song
everyone hamming up their assigned roles
Antonio's added explosion sound effect 💥 instead of their usual party poppers
Trivia:
Having this medley in their repertoire may have given them an advantage when "Bye Bye Bye" was chosen as the battle song for their first episode of The Sing-Off.
Tony was, in fact, the first one from this configuration of VoicePlay to leave. Not to go solo, though. He wanted to be home with his family and focus on growing PattyCake.
The guys updated this medley and filmed a full music video for it as the result of a Patreon poll in 2019.
