Are Conventions Still Relevant?

Show of hands, who has Twitter? Instagram? Discord or Tumblr? Seemingly everyone on earth nowadays has some form of social media, and does a significant amount of their socializing on it. 

The group most prolific for this are known to the world as nerds, geeks, dorks, or sometimes just weirdos. They’ve been there since the beginning of conventions, the internet, and most other things you’d associate with traditional media. 

The image you think of when you hear the word nerd is not what it always looked like. The invention of the internet kickstarted it into what we perceive now, but before it looked more like social clubs, political groups, and of course cults. 

The precursor to modern conventions were purely political ones, where majorly older white men gathered to discuss the world and politics. These date back to the 1800’s and continue to this day. 

Now we have conventions for anything and everything. My personal favorites are for vacuums, clowning, mermaiding, and oddity selling. 

But the first notable nerd convention is San Diego Comic Con. Though not the first nerd convention, it is the one that would become most famous and successful. 

Started in the 70’s by a devoted group of comic book, film, and science fiction fans, it is our starting point for what would become nerd culture as we know it today. For the first time, a group that had otherwise always felt othered and ostracized, as evident by their depictions in pop culture at the time like the film Revenge of the Nerds, had a place to embrace themselves and their communities. 

Nerd gatherings, and thus, their culture, began to explode. More conventions started, communities expanded, fandoms were created, and lifelong friendships were made. 

By the 80’s, the nerd was practically a subset of human beings with their own codes, cultures, languages, and more. Many now remember this as the golden age of nerds, with the commercialization of their culture coming soon after. 

Because there is no longer anyone on the planet who hasn’t seen a Marvel movie, which in fact used to be a comic company if you didn’t know, and Twitter arguments over who’s stan is more valid are commonplace, we tend to forget our roots and what it’s all about. 

So what is it all about? Conventions were the birthplace of the nerd, but with the invention of the internet, Discord servers, and Amazon merch what’s the point anymore?

To answer this question I took myself to LVL UP Expo, a local Vegas convention for gaming, anime, and everything dorky to ask some dorks myself. The hustle and bustle of these conventions and of course my own nerdy shyness made it difficult to get some answers, but to those brave souls who spoke to me, this is what they said. 

“I just wanted to buy real bladed swords and to get autographs,” said Gaby Benities, 19. 

“I only want to cosplay,” said another nerd. 

“To me it just feels more real or legitimate when you’re in a physical place surrounded by people who share your interests; it’s easier to have spontaneous moments of ‘oh hey I recognize your outfit!’ or ‘you’re in line to meet this actor too?’ that you just can’t get anywhere else” said Jake Palmas, 25. 

For my part, it’s the only place I feel like I can be my real self and be seen. Just knowing everyone there is there for the same reasons, they’re all like me, makes me feel at home like no other place could. It’s also the best place I know to easily get your hands on cute, creative and interesting art from all kinds of people I otherwise would have never heard of. 

Conventions matter. They are an incredible way to support local art, engage and meet people for those that struggle with that, expand communities, and feel like yourself. 

Every one of the things I listed, and those given by guests and LVL UP Expo can be done on the internet, but from what I’ve heard and my own personal experience, it’s just not the same. Nothing could ever truly replicate the feeling someone can get from being surrounded by people who understand you. 

I’m sure that’s something everyone has struggled with and can relate to. So instead of asking why, ask why not? Why not support something that has only benefited people? (Except that one furry convention from the 90’s, I’m looking at you). Support the artists, the communities, the companies and creators who want to engage with you! 

So if you’ve never  been to a convention, not just the nerdy ones, go. I promise there’s something for you. But if you don’t like large crowds and can’t stand body odor, maybe just stick to Facebook.

درباره ی موریس

جزیره ی رؤیایی موریس در جنوبی ترین نقطه ی اقیانوس هند، شرق جزیره ی ماداگاسکار و  جنوب شرقی قاره ی آفریقا واقع شده است. دریانوردان مالایی کاشفان این جزیره در قرن دهم میلادی بودند. در قرن شانزدهم میلادی موریس، مستعمره ی پرتغال و سپس هلند (قرن 17) گردید.

این جزیره در سال 1715 تحت کنترل فرانسوی ها درآمد و در طی جنگ های ناپلئونی در سال 1810 توسط نیروهای انگلیسی اشغال شد. در سال 1968 این کشور توانست استقلال خود را از انگلستان به دست آورد.

موریس جاذبه های توریستی متنوع و شگفت انگیزی دارد؛ علاوه بر سواحل بسیار زیبا مانند رودخانه، مرداب، کوه، جنگل های زیبا، گونه های جانوری و گیاهی فراوان، دهانه های آتشفشانی، آبشار و ... آثار تاریخی را نیز می توان در این جزیره ی رؤیایی مشاهده نمود که اکثر آن ها در برنامه ی تور گنجانده شده است.

سازمان جهانی جهانگردی (World Tourism Organization (WTO، موریس را به عنوان یکی از ده مقصد برتر توریستی دنیا معرفی نموده است.

پورت لوئیس

 Port louis شهر پورت لوئیس در شمال غرب جزیره موریس قرار دارد و پایتخت این جمهوری است. این شهر در سال 1371 توسط فرانسوی ها بنا شده است.

جزایر شمالی جزیره موریس از مقاصد تور موریس:

برگزارکنندگان تورهای گران بِه، برنامه های یک روزه با ناهار در جزایر شمالی شامل  IIe aux Cerfs در شرق و IIe aux Benitiers در غرب را اجرا می کنند.

آب های محصور در بین صخره های جزایر فلت (Flat) و گابریل (Gabriel) از جمله پرطرفدارترین اماکن امن برای شنا و غواصی است.

در مسیر گذرگاهی در جزیره ی فلت، یک فانوس دریایی و یک گورستان وجود دارد. این گورستان محل دفن مردمی است که در سال 1856 در اثر شیوع بیماری وبا از بین رفتند. چشم اندازهای زیبا و وسیع ساحل دریای آزاد، سفر دریایی به مقصد "کوین دو میر" را حیرت انگیز و رؤیایی می سازد؛ اما رفتن به ساحل به علت قطعه قطعه شدن صخره های آتش فشانی غیر ممکن است.

جزیره ی راند (Round) زیستگاه گونه ای سقنقور به نام تلفِر (Telfair) و جزیره ی سرپان (Serpent) محل زندگی پرندگان است. برای گشت و گذار در هر کدام از این جزیره ها باید اجازه ی ورود داشته باشید.

منطقه گران بِه (Grand Baie)

این منطقه به لطف فضای آرام و راحت، هتل های لوکس و استراحتگاه های مختلف، مراکز بهبود سلامتی، مسیرهای پیاده روی، بهشت گردشگران اروپایی محسوب می شود.

جذابیت زندگی شبانه در روزهای جمعه و شنبه، حتی بسیاری از ساکنان جزیره ی موریس را هم برای گشت و گذار و خرید به سوی خود می کشاند. بسیاری از اهالی موریس در این مکان صاحب خانه ی دوم هستند.

بلوار سان ست در این منطقه با مغازه های سوغاتی و کافه هایش معروف شده است. گران بِه در این بلوار یک مرکز برگزارکننده ی مسابقات ماهیگیری دارد. می توانید از این نقطه به جزایر دور از ساحل سری بزنید، به علاوه تمامی تفریحات آبی از قبیل شیرجه، اسکی روی آب، قایق رانی، پاراگلایدر، سیاحت های اکتشافی در زیر آب و پیاده روی بر کف اقیانوس را تجربه کنید.

برای شنا، از ساحل دور شوید و به سمت شمال خلیج یعنی لا کووِت (La Cuvette) حرکت کنید. اینجا مجهز به پارکینگ، دوش، غذاخوری و سرویس بهداشتی است. می توانید پشت صخره های بازالتی تا محوطه ی ساحل هتل رویال پالم (Royal Palm) در سمت راست شنا کنید.

 سرسره های بازی در پارک آبی بل مار (Belle Mare Waterpark) لحظات سرگرم کننده ای برای کودکان فراهم می آورد. در دومِن لِه پَی (Domaines  les pailles) شما می توانید به تورهای گشت با کالسکه بپیوندید.
