So I did a thing today and did my bed to #bemonumental. 🏃‍♀️💨 This didn’t go down the way I wanted it to. It was super duper windy, hotter than I expected (hello sports bra and shorts in November!). I started too fast and by mile 10 my brain was convincing myself I would never ever make it. I had to stop and get my life together after that mile too many times to count to make myself keep going...and then I had to keep stopping because my left calf and side kept cramping. So much stopping, but then so much taking off like a bat out of hell, determined to freaking finish. And that’s what I did. The only way I got through it was telling myself this was just a “practice” sub-4 and that I would do a “real” one without all the stopping in the spring. The deals runners make with themselves. 😆 By the way, physically I felt strong, and the @genucan worked its magic—I never hit the wall and never felt like I was running out of gas. That plus gels every four miles seems like the perfect fueling strategy for me. All I have to do now is solve my mental game (and actually follow my pacing strategy), and I’m good to go, because that was all that was holding me back. Large dog 🐕 claimed my medal because...well, I’ll let him tell it: 👇🏻 “She didn’t take me with at ALL so this medal is mine as payment for my pain and suffering having to stay behind and sleep on the couch 8/10” • • • • • • • • • • • • #runnersofinstagram #runnerscommunity #womensrunningcommunity #instarunners #fitfam #fitnessjourney #weightlossjourney #facetiouslyfit #runners #running #runnerswholift #runnerswhobike #runstagram #runnergirl #getitdone #justdothething #keepshowingup #marathonrunner #halfmarathonrunner #irunthisbody #fitnessgirl #runchat #runlikeagirl #indymonumental #marathontraining #runrunrun (at McHenry County, Illinois) https://www.instagram.com/p/CHTmAn8HFUu/?igshid=11eyhx36ms2ut

Last Saturday I ran my last race of the year- the Indianapolis Monumental Marathon.  This the 4th time I’ve run this race (each of the last 4 years) which as you can see from the picture was a special 4 year series and so all the finishing medals fit into this spiffy display case along with the center star piece.  The short version is I ran a 4 minute PR of 4:24:02.  The long(er) race report is below the cut.
This year my main A race was an Olympic Triathlon at the beginning of September and overall this year I focused much more on shorter distances (ie. no 70.3′s this year)- so other than this race, the longest other race of the year was only about 2:40 of effort (but I did WIN my age group in that race!)  So all of that to say that I only really had about 9 weeks of real long distance focused training, though I was building longs runs before that. My longest long run was only 17.5 this year because I got behind in my progression early on.  Mileage averaged about 35 miles / week though my peak week was 45 miles.
The lady I’ve been coaching in triathlon this year was also running in this race and it would be her first. As it worked out, our race paces were going to end up being pretty much the same, so the week of the race we decided we would run together.
The weather was perfect for running - temp range from 47-51, overcast, dry, no crazy wind.  We were pacing at 9:20/mi (pretty spot on for the first 5 miles) but I knew we would slow down a bit from miles 15-18 due to some hills. We also planned to walk the aid stations (just while drinking) so I was hoping we’d end up averaging 9:30-9:40/mi.  Through the first 13.1 we were averaging right at 9:30/mi.  In past years I was really mentally challenged in the section from mile 15-18, but this year it wasn’t nearly as bad. Kinsey was fighting through some ITBS and knee pain and since I knew the hills would probably hurt a lot, I think my concern for her left me no time to worry about myself :)
As expected, by the time we got to 30k our average pace had fallen to about 9:40/mi, but seeing the 3:00:00 as we crossed was a good sign I thought.  The section from 18-22 on this course is tough for a number of reasons, but it seemed to pass pretty quickly for me. Unfortunately I realized at this point that I had gotten too far behind on my nutrition -- heart rate had started to drift and stomach was starting to get sloshy so I knew I wasn’t going to be able to take on much more and I had only used about half of my planned intake by mile 20.
Around mile 22 my calves started getting crampy.  I had actually strained my left calf earlier this summer pretty bad (the main reason I got behind in my long runs) running cross country trails.  I’ve been using a Stryd powermeter this season and through experience I knew that when my output gets up above 330w I’m really pushing my calf to failure.  In this race my target output was actually only 235w so I thought I’d be safe, but obviously I didn’t have the muscular endurance to hold things together even at the lower intensity.  So anyway, back to mile 22 - I could tell my efficiency went to shit around this time because while we held our pace (around 10:00 by this point) my HR was pushing into mid-zone-4 and my power output was actually increasing even as we held pace (more effort going into less result).
From back at the 30k mats we knew that the 4:15 pace group wasn’t far behind us because we’d hear people cheering for them. I’m surprised we stayed ahead of them as long as we did (I never looked back), but they did finally pass us between mile 22 and 23 (darn!)
As we got to mile 24, my calves were full on cramping.  I made Kinsey go on without me.  I could tell she was hurting (who isn’t at the end of a marathon?) but she was still moving with decent form.  I determined my best chance to finish was to run/walk it, so I went 1:00 walk/.5mi run (about 5 minutes of walking).
Though it was a disappointing to hobble to the finish line that way, especially after having a great 22 miles, there was quite a lot to come away happy with.  I beat my PR from 2015 by 4 minutes. I finished my 4th marathon and also completed the special “IndyThon Ultra” from running the 13.1 sister race the month prior.  Kinsey finished her first marathon about 4 minutes ahead of me (sub 4:20).
Running continues to be a lot tougher for me than swimming and biking.  I doubt I will run another open marathon before I run 26.2 in an Ironman (2019?)  For the rest of the year I’m going to focus on trying to drop some weight and get back into some real strength training.

@isamarathoner ・・・ It’s Wednesday so you know for me that usually means two things: #restday and #cleanseday! Yep, enjoyed some extra sleep this morning but I still got some stretching and rolling done. Y’all, I can’t say enough how much I ❤️❤️❤️ this funky roller from @rollgahealth! And it’s SUPER light! Not an ad, just sharing a product I love! Yesterday I mentioned getting your stretching and rolling done and several people commented that they struggle with fitting it in. So what I do is make time on my rest day, and fit it in every other day when I can, like when I watch TV, helping the kids read, cooking dinner (yes, I’m weird like that). A busy schedule means you do it when you can - no excuses! Here’s to a happy and healthy Wednesday! —————————————> . . . #MarathonFest #marathontraining #irunthisbody #headupwingsout #flystyle #ihavearunnersbody #oisellevolee #oiselleFL #zensah #teamzensah #teamenertor #isarunner #mindovermatter #mmathlete #mmalpha #leavenodoubt #monumentalmarathon #bemonumental #accountabilitycoach #hansonsmarathonmethod #rollga #foamroller #rollitout #cleansedaywednesday #intermittentfasting #cellularcleansing #teamisagenix #shredday https://www.instagram.com/p/BnOi0ajATrW/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1ej28llmm8exd

I'm looking forward to next year, focusing on biking, something my whole family is wanting to do! But, as of now, I can say I'm a half marathoner!! #halfmarathoner #bemonumental #runnernotarunner #monumentalX2 #fortben131 #5ksforlife

A Monumental Year
Tumblr media
When you first start running, you hear a lot about a turning point when you go from casual runner to obsession. The 2013 Monumental half marathon was my turning point. It showed me that I could achieve things I thought I’d never be able to do.
Tumblr media
I just finished my third Monumental half two weeks ago. It took me a while to gather my thoughts. The Monumental was a perfect way to cap off a great year of races. 2013 was my first half marathon but this years' Monumental was special for different reasons.
I was lucky enough to get to work with an incredibly passionate Monumental team to rebrand the race. It's been really cool to see the race grow with the city. If a growing reputation for being one of the nation's best races wasn't enough, a new title sponsorship put the Monumental in position to go big. After our initial meeting, I couldn't wait to get started. It was such an honor to be able to do something to share my love for this event and my hometown to the running community. The Soldiers and Sailors monument is visually synonymous with Indianapolis and had been used in past iterations of the race logo. I wanted to honor that history while making it feel modern and dynamic.
Tumblr media
From the launch of the new branding at the Monumental Mile in June to race day two weeks ago, it's been amazing to keep working with the Monumental team and see everything come together. It's also really cool to see the impact on my community that this race creates. Monumental puts so much back into youth health initiatives in our city. I can't really describe the pride in seeing my work on banners around the city, on the finisher medals and on the shirts of so many runners. It doesn't feel real. Race day was one of my proudest career moments and I'm so glad it was with this organization and event.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So how was my race? Amazing. This was one of the most mentally composed races I've ever run. It wasn't my best half, but it wasn't my worst. I really wanted to break 2:00, but after sustaining some pretty solid injuries during Chicago just three weeks before, I knew that likely wasn't in the cards. I had a great time running and have always enjoyed this course. Considering I had a torn tendon in my foot that was still healing, I held a pretty strong pace for the first 9-10 miles. I started fading there but was able to adjust a little and keep on rolling. In the end, I finished at 2:18. This race was also really fun because so many people from my agency were running. Since we had done the branding work, our owners offered to pay for anyone who wanted to run. We had 13 people run the full or half (many people running their first race) and a few others volunteered.
Tumblr media
The Monumental Marathon challenges runners, volunteers and spectators to Be Monumental. After that first half marathon in 2013, I took that to heart. I've kept running hard since. But 2016 was a dream year for a beginning runner. I set some big goals. After running three half marathons from 2013-2015, this year I ran three half marathons, was lucky enough to run my first full marathon at the Chicago Marathon and got to leave my mark on a nationally recognized marathon that just happens to be my hometown marathon. I also fell short of some goals. I've still got a sub 2:00 half to run and I know can do much better than that first marathon. I’m excited to get some rest, let injuries heal and get ready for next year's goals. I've already set my sights on a new marathon PR at the 2017 Monumental Marathon. #BeMonumental
