Do You Honestly Find Spas Kind of Boring?

The new Kohler Waters Spa in Chicago is on a bustling street in the Lincoln Park neighborhood. But once inside, clients can find themselves a spot on a private beach, along a quiet mountainside or even inside a dark, comforting cave.Well, that’s if they fork over $95 for a 50-minute “virtual reality pedicure” (a traditional 50-minute pedicure there is $79).It was perhaps only a matter of time before virtual reality was elevated from the gamer’s basement to the marble-lined, lavender-infused realm of luxury self-care.“Wellness has become a huge marketing term to attract those guests who want to not just have a beauty result at the end of their service, but want to feel relaxed, calm and now, increasingly so, de-stressed,” said Patricia Heitz, a spa consultant in Delmar, N.Y. Virtual reality, she said, is “taking that wellness service to the next level by transporting the guest to a place of inner peace and calm.”People receiving pedicures have long read fashion and gossip magazines — or, more recently, poked at their phones. But while clients at Kohler stare off into a “sunset,” “waterfall” or relaxing scene of their choice, they also get to choose a meditation to accompany the view as they chill out in massage chairs and get their nails buffed. And some spas are offering V.R. as a treatment unto itself. At G20 Spa & Salon in Boston, customers pay $45 for a 30-minute guided virtual meditation. They pop on a V.R. headset while sitting in a reclining chair and choose a guided meditation along with an “environment,” like the Northern Lights or a forest.“It’s gaining popularity,” said William Engvall, the assistant spa director at G20, where the V.R. meditation has been on the menu since 2018. An average of five to 10 people a week visit the spa specifically for the guided V.R. meditation, he said.A similar setup awaits visitors to Esqapes Immersive Relaxation, a V.R. meditation center in a Los Angeles office building, where clients can visit a “garden,” a “desert,” a “Moroccan resort” or “snowbank cabin” while sitting in a massage chair ($45 for 30 minutes).“V.R. and the extrasensory components are a key component of the treatment,” said Micah Jackson, the C.E.O. of Esqapes. Giving the mind something to focus on, rather than letting it wander freely, is one of the tenets of meditation, he pointed out.Adding virtual reality to the menu is also relatively low-cost for spas; an investment in equipment is required, but not the labor of extra aestheticians or staff, said Kate Mearns, the director of spa and wellness at LIVunLtd Spa & Wellness, a wellness service provider for residential and commercial buildings.Because of staffing shortages, spas are looking for services that don’t require licensed therapists, Ms. Mearns said.“Virtual reality allows spa guests to heighten their spa experience in a more D.I.Y. service setting,” she said. Many of the spas are using Guided VR, a service of Cubicle Ninjas, a digital agency in Glen Ellyn, Ill. Staff members there came up with the idea five years ago during a particularly bad winter, when they started hanging out on virtual beaches.“Our team didn’t want to leave,” said Josh Farkas, the C.E.O. and founder of Guided VR.They decided to create guided meditation V.R., and started offering the service to dentists, elder care centers and spas. The spas pay $150 to $300 per month per headset based on the size of the spa, and Guided VR provides the headset license, hardware setup and “relaxation content.”“When we built the B2B side, we thought that dentists, doctors and elder care would be a much bigger market, but spas are the most interested and willing to adopt,” Mr. Farkas said.Perhaps this is because spas are accustomed to charging for add-on services; if not milk and honey in the pedicure water, why not a “trip” to “paradise”?A virtual reality experience at the beginning of a facial bumps the price up to $555 for 100 minutes from $350 for 90 minutes (the cost of a comparative standard facial at the same spa) at Qua Baths & Spa in Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. The extra time at the beginning is devoted to a virtual relaxation, the aesthetician helping with the relaxation by touching the client’s body in time with the meditation. Then the goggles are removed and the facial portion of the service begins.“This really allows the guest to be in that moment, to really relax,” said Kristin Carpenter, the director of spas and salons for Caesars Palace. But some people think V.R. has no place in settings traditionally devoted to pampering and spiritual escape.Mary Bemis, the editorial director for Insider’s Guide to Spas, believes that virtual reality and all the gadgets that come with it don’t belong inside a spa.“In an all too virtual synthetic world, spa culture provides a high-touch, utterly human, unduplicatable experience,” Ms. Bemis said. “In a world of counterfeits, the gold-standard spa experience is that which is real, not virtual.” Read the full article

You Swooned Over a Victorian! Historic Omaha Home Is the Week’s Most Popular Place
realtor.com
An elegant piece of Omaha history is this week’s most popular home on realtor.com®. After a complete exterior face-lift, the national landmark known as the Edgar Zabriskie Home landed on the market and racked up tons of clicks.
Built in 1889 by a Civil War veteran, Edgar Zabriskie, the blue Queen Anne beauty offers oodles of timeless charm. At 131 years old, the historic home was one of the first built in the city’s Bemis Park neighborhood. Its gingerbread-style good looks impressed folks from coast to coast, who couldn’t help but click on this stellar example of Victorian style.
Besides this ultra-nice house in Nebraska, you also clicked on a family compound in Louisiana with two separate homes and a 14-car garage, a rugged cabin in the remote Alaskan shipping village of Port Protection, and an empty (and spooky!) Gothic building in Indiana.
Of course, you couldn’t resist another look at the grooviest, greenest 1970s throwback condo, which is now pending sale.
While we attempt to finagle an invite to the housewarming party at the green time capsule, we invite you to scroll through the entire list of this week’s 10 most popular homes…

MARCH 23, 1913 TORNADO OUTBREAK- 38th Street in OMAHA, NEBRASKA
“OMAHA SWEPT BY STORM WHICH KILLS OVER HUNDRED; FIRE INCREASES TRAGEDY.
DEATH LIST OF STORM VICTIMS SWELLS HOURLY.
Omaha, March 24 – Ripping its way through the western part of the city, tearing down houses and leaving a trail of ruins and death, a tornado struck Omaha at 6 o'clock last evening. The region in the neighborhood of Forty-third and Dewey and avenue along Thirty-eighth street and the Bemis park district were the heaviest hit.
It is estimated that 200 houses throughout all of the western part of the city were totally or partially demolished. The mansions of the JOSLYNS and the CARPENTERS were damaged by the storm. Through the Bemis park district it swept tearing down the houses right and left. Along Lincoln boulevard at Thirty-fourth street nearly up to Myrtle avenue the houses were all demolished. The house at the corner built by Tolf Hanson was entirely destroyed. Trees in the park were uprooted and twisted as if they were reeds.
A frightful scene of havoc abounded in the vicinity of Fortieth and Farnam streets. As far as the eye could see in the darkness in every direction not a building remained intact. The streets were strewn with wreckage of every destription. The great building of the Electric Garage company, only recently wrecked in a street car accident was entirely destroyed with probable irreparable loss to the entire contents representing $200,000.
The drug store of C. E. LATHROP was converted, though itself partially wrecked, into a temporary hospital. There a score of doctors attended to the more or less seriously injured. Great, luxurious limousines the property of the wealthy residents predominating in the neighborhood, were converted into ambulances, their immaculate interiors bespattered with blood and water as victim after victim was either taken to a hospital or to neighboring uninjured homes.
At the outset of the calamity great danger threatened the scores of persons who plunged through the wreckage and ruin to aid the hundreds pinned in the debris of their homes. Vast networks of wires, many of them supplying high tension current to outlying sections and scores of lower powered circuits were strewn in the street threatening instant death to any uncautious enough to plunge heedless in their frenzy.
The cries of the injured and the frightened ones combined with the terror of the wind, the rain and the electrical disturbance was too terrifying for desceiption. The appalling darkness caused by the destruction of light service made the condition all the more terrifying. As the rescuers and uninjured ran here and there in the storm in search of relatives and friends the cries of those they sought emanated from the debris of partially or wholly wrecked homes. The new home of LEE HUFF at 401 North Thirty-ninth street was wrecked but nineteen people, who were in it at the time escaped without a scratch except for MR. HUFF himself. He was hit on the forehead by a piece of flying debris and received a slight flesh wound.
The funnel-shaped cloud came from the southwest. Citizens in the vicinity of Forty-fourth and Dewey had watched it for some time before the cyclone struck the ground.
With a roar that resembled that of a freight train, the storm struck the houses near the corner of Forty-fourth and Dewey avenue. The twister swept a clean path east as far as Fortieth on Dewey avenue, and then preceeded north and east over the corner of Fortieth and Farnum. Many people had taken to their cellars and some few men were in their yards when the storm struck. Roofs were torn off houses for blocks on either side of the storm, while in the main path of the cyclone the buildings were absolutely demolished, and fire in the ruins of the homes at the corner of Forty-second and Harney completed the devastation, while women and men in turn rushed up to firemen to borrow axes and lanterns to liberate friends and relatives pinned under the wreckage of homes. MRS. IDA NEWMAN, the mother of nine children, was killed in her home and only six of the children have been found. The home was totally demolished and fire threatened the ruins. The youngest child, a baby, was ill with typhoid and is supposed to have perished with the mother, although when MRS. NEWMAN’S body was recovered that of the baby could not be found. A pitiful little group, with one of the elder sisters, with the group of younger children about her, knelt in a dark corner of the Child Saving Institute and prayed and cried. LILLIAN DAVIS, daughter of MRS. V. DAVIS, 4428 Jackson, who was killed, was nearly frantic with grief and it was with difficulty that she could be given emergency treatment by the physicians.”

Home room: Gresham tenants Discuss rent Renewal
Community Alliance of Tenants, Pueblo Unido PDX discuss Climbing rents, no-cause evictions.
The nation of home in Gresham has led one 88-year-old Gresham woman to the brink of homelessness.
Norma, who lives at Gresham Station Apartments, shared with her story during a meeting like-minded community members that are fed up with stressing each month regarding the threat of sudden rent increases or no-cause evictions.
“It is getting to where I can’t do much because of all the rent I’m forced to pay,” Norma said.
Before year that her rent went up to 37, a much more drastic increase compared to Social Security test she receives each month, which just increased by $37.
“I really don’t understand what I could do,” Norma said. “No one can help us. We are in need of help.”
Norma’s story wasn’t the sole one shared during “Housing for the People,” an event held Tuesday night, Feb. 6, in the Gresham Station Apartments on Northwest Shattuck Way. The event was hosted by the Community Alliance of Tenants and Pueblo Unido PDX, which is a vocal opponent of the city’s Rockwood Growing development. The focuses of the peaceful gathering included the dramatic growth in housing expenses, wages lagging behind lease increases and an inadequate supply of homes.
“Rents are increasing, and Gresham has been hit hard,” explained Pam Phan, the Community Alliance of Tenants coverage and organizing manager. “This neighborhood is ground zero to your own rental housing difficulty.”
The Community Alliance of Tenants (CAT) is a statewide and grassroots tenant-rights organization. Pueblo Unido is a grassroots organization dedicated to supporting, educating and advocating for Latino immigrants in East Multnomah County. Formed in April 2017, the advocacy group is staffed by volunteers, so lots of whom are Rockwood swimmers themselves.
The organization’s first two customers helped open its collective eyes to the home difficulties.
“They were made to make a choice between paying for an attorney or paying their lease,” explained Francisco Rodriguez, co-executive manager of Pueblo Unido.
One woman in the Tuesday gathering talked of neighbors forced to live in a park near the flat she lives in because of enormous rent increases, while the other man had to dwell on the streets for 2 weeks while he searched for a new location to reside. From the area filled with about 50 individuals, seven were going to be priced out of their homes by lease, four had been evicted without reason and five were too scared to whine about maintenance problems inside their own apartments.
A D V E R T I S I N G | Read below
“We’re sick and tired of being sick and tired,” explained Marih Alyn-Claire, with CAT. “We need to find out more lines of support.”
Housing has been a continuous problem raised at Gresham City Council meetings through the testimonies of neighborhood residents. Advocates, lots of whom were in the meeting Tuesday night, have shared tales of rent increases and no-cause evictions that have driven people to the edge of homelessness. Those affected are the most vulnerable — older, handicapped, young adults that can’t find stable work, and a few families of color.
“We have engaged city council at meetings officially, however they aren’t getting things done for tenants,” Pham said.
Landlords whined
While the renters met to share ideas and strategies for carrying on the housing issue, just down the road several landlords went before the Gresham City Council to urge for their side.
Many said that rent control was not the response for Gresham since the most important concern is a lack of housing supply. With so many people moving to East Multnomah County, there aren’t enough homes available. They stated a desire to visit Gresham City Council find ways to incentivize development.
One landlord that talked was Lila Leathers, a Boring resident that owns property in East Multnomah County. She said that often rent increases are out of the control of the home owner, rather dictated by external forces. A good example is the recent Gresham-Barlow School Bond that Republicans supported.
A D V E R T I S I N G | Read below
“As a spouse, I’m grateful for the new school bond, however, property tax increases due to bonds departure are a portion of the price of leasing,” Leathers said.
Added restrictions would place the burden on taxpayers, the speakers mentioned. Rent control means they may have to be more discerning in the rental procedure, further tightening the supply available.
“Heavy controls and weights of any type is the wrong way for economic development,” Leathers said.
Gresham resident Joan Albertson talked of past successes that the Gresham City Council and Mayor Shane Bemis have achieved from supporting families to company.
“The common thread Gresham is getting government out of the way, and adding innovative incentives to find those involved in a positive fashion,” Albertson said. “When we have a housing emergency in Gresham, I am sure council will come up with a strategy.”
Strategies for shift
Community members worked in smaller groups to innovate advocacy plans that could be used to support home in Gresham.
“This really is a good opportunity, tons of people in Gresham are affected by housing difficulties,” explained Cameron Coval, co-executive manager of Pueblo Unido. “We’re worried this housing crisis is only going to get worse”
They came up with pushing for greater representation in the town level, revealing that tenants aren’t second-class citizens, coming up with a unified message, even incorporating youths and locating those that feel disenfranchised or without a voice.
The state of Oregon does not allow individual cities to execute rent control, although there are a few steps the organizers emphasized that Gresham could take to help deal with the housing difficulties.
The town could announce housing a state of crisis and govern no-cause evictions. One idea would be to require notice to tenants before they lose their house without cause. In Milwaukee, town officials improved the mandatory notice period from 30-60 days to 90 days.
Another plan would be to require reimbursement of transport costs for renters that are exposed to some no-cause flooding or a significant increase in lease. Portland needs landlords to pay $2,900 to $4,500 to tenants in this circumstance.
A D V E R T I S I N G | Read below
Finally, they want the town to restrict required security deposits and define “moderate wear and tear” to protect against misuse of those deposits.
The community members desire more to visit City Council meetings while also organizing an email and letter writing effort.
“We need our residents to attend these meetings to join the Gresham advisory committees,” Rodriguez explained.
For those considering joining the renters in the Gresham housing meetings, then the next gathering will be held at 1 Monday, Feb. 19, in Gresham Station Apartments, 1003 N.W. Shattuck Way. The occasion will be utilized as a chance to prepare before the City Council meeting the next day, where lots of the members may attend and voice their own home concerns.
City’s reply
The town of Gresham is creating a renewed effort to update its Housing Policy, which was last place in 2013. Brian Monberg, Gresham’s policy director, has been tasked with analyzing the housing problems across the town whilst coming up with possible solutions.
Monberg has been presenting his findings into town council throughout the procedure.
“We need approaches to develop new home, while also improving existing units,” he told The Outlook for a former story.
The four pillars of the former coverage were home opportunities, economic development, livability and rehabilitation. Monberg is upgrading information based on the demographics of Gresham, new home and the connection between development and lease increases. He’s also diving into other practices that the city could use to fight rising costs of home. One alternative could include incentives for rehabilitating old, weatherproof home.
“Despite lease prices moving up, Gresham is still one of the cheapest cities in the region,” Monberg said. “The prices have improved slower here compared to Portland.”

JACKSON CITY COUNCILMAN ERNEST BROOKS ANNOUNCES 2017 JACKSON “DO THE WRITE THING” SCHOOL AMBASSADORS
JACKSON CITY COUNCILMAN ERNEST BROOKS
ANNOUNCES 2017 JACKSON “DO THE WRITE THING” SCHOOL AMBASSADORS
As the Jackson-Madison County School 2016 - 2017 school year comes to a close, middle school students
across the district will be recognized for their participation in the Jackson “Do the Write Thing”
Challenge. 460 middle school students in the Jackson-Madison County School System accepted the
challenge and submitted writings to express how violence impacts their lives. From those submitted, ten
boys and ten girls were selected as School Ambassadors representing Northeast Middle School, North
Parkway Middle School, Parkview Learning Center, and West/Bemis Middle School.
The Challenge gives students an opportunity to examine the impact of youth violence on their lives in
classroom discussions and in written form by communicating what they think should be done to change
our culture of violence. By encouraging students to make personal commitments to do something about
the problem, the program ultimately seeks to empower them to break the cycles of violence in their
homes, schools and neighborhoods.
Jackson City Councilman, Ernest Brooks II, founded and has chaired this program for ten years. During
his tenure, over 8,000 students from the Jackson Madison County School System have accepted the
Challenge and submitted writings. Corporate sponsor The Jackson Generals, gave each participant two
free tickets and refreshments during “Do the Write Thing” Night at Generals park on Monday, May 15,
2017.
On Saturday, May 20, 2017, the twenty school ambassadors, parents, teachers and administrators will
attend the “Do the Write Thing” Challenge Breakfast at the Doubletree Hotel. There, the girl and boy,
who submitted the most responsive writings, will be announced as the National Ambassadors. These
students, a parent of each, and their teacher will attend the “Do the Write Thing” Challenge National
Recognition week on July 11 - 15, 2017, in Washington, D.C. – all expenses paid.
During National Recognition Week, national ambassadors have the opportunity to present their views on
youth violence to such national leaders as the Secretary of Education, the Attorney General of the United
States, the Administrator of the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention and Members of
the Congress. In addition, their writings will be published and placed in the Library of Congress.
Brooks, II, states, “A Coalition of business, educational and governmental leaders has forged a lasting
partnership to prevent youth violence in our community. I applaud the student participants for their
willingness to take a stand against youth violence. They are learning to better voice their life experiences
and create turning points that effect prevention.”
